orale, Welfare and Recreation and the Fleet and Family Support Center will host the Sixth Annual Military Spouse Appreciation Brunch and Bingo from 10:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. May 14 at the Sigsbee Community Center.

The event coincides with national Military Spouse Appreciation Day, held the Friday before Mother’s Day. This year’s day of military spouse recognition is May 6.

Navy promotes resiliency afloat and ashore for Earth Day From Chief of Naval Operations

avy commands worldwide are observing Earth Day in April through events and activities that demon-

strate good environmental stewardship among Sailors and civilian personnel.

Events range from tree plantings to shoreline and neighborhood base cleanups, nature tours, school presen-

tations and recycling challenges.

Naval Air Station Key West will participate in the Bahia Honda State Park Earth Day Celebration from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

The Navy’s 2016 theme, “Creating Resiliency Afloat and Ashore,” makes the point that protecting the environment and using energy wisely helps us perform our mission more effective-

Volunteering has been a joy and a challenge at times but in the end it is worth it. What is most rewarding is the time I get to spend with my boys, watching them accomplish goals and seeing them make friends.

Yet as the time ticks down to my departure, I think about how this will all change. My children are going to be forced to leave this area where they have their friends, school and supports in place. They will have to adjust to a new environment, and then in three years they will likely have to do it all again.

I will be going operational, so I will not be able to be a den leader. I will not be there to encourage and guide my kids to achieve their goals every month. I won’t know who their friends are or what they look like. I won’t be able to give them hugs at night, sing songs, play video games or even cook food with them.

As an adult, a service member and a parent, I understand this is the challenge we face. My

children have no choice. We say kids are adaptable, but honestly, it is the roughest on our children to have to move every few years.

They have not had the opportunity to emotionally mature. They do not have a place to call their home of record.

Nevertheless, children CHAPLAIN'S our CORNER pack their favorite teddy bears, watch their belongings being packed up and wonder when they will sleep in NAS Key West their beds again.

Command Chaplain They are plugged into a new school Lt. Ethan Everts that could be teaching a different curriculum than where they were before. They do this with tears in their eyes and excitement in their minds. All the while, they support us with love from their hearts.

Military children are an amazing group in our community.

They face more challenges than some people may face in their entire lives.

April is Military Child Appreciation Month. I suggest you take the time celebrate all

they endure as we, the active military member, serve this great country. They, too, are serving in a way. They sacrifice their God-given rights to their mom and dad time so democracy and freedom can be defended worldwide.

Take them out for ice cream or for a meal at their favorite restaurant. Take them to a movie.

Buy them a gift or new clothes.

Give them a day where they can spend time with you, because each minute that passes can never be taken back. Remember that each minute to come is a minute to invest.

You only have them for a short while; before you know it, they are adults and on their own. And as you end your career, you could be sending them off on to the same ship you once sailed or the same shore you once treaded. So take a moment and make them feel appreciated.

Doolittle’s Raiders restored America’s morale at start of WWII

I

n the early 1940s, Imperial Japan was a small island with a large population and a shortage of natural resources. Without these resources, Japan was at a great disadvantage in the industrial age.

To correct this situation, Japan embarked on a series of military offenses to occupy other countries and take the coveted oil and other resources by force. This military expansion targeted the Asian colonies of European nations.

With some justification, Japan was of the opinion the

American Pacific fleet would take action to hinder and stop the Japanese military expansion. It was with this in mind the Imperial Japanese Navy under the Command of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto attacked HISTORICAL Pearl Harbor PERSPECTIVES on Dec. 7, 1941.

Simultaneous assaults took place at Wake Island and Luzon. Wake Island defendColumnist ers, without Jim King food and ammu-

nition were forced to surrender on Dec. 23, 1941. The battle for Bataan began Jan. 7 and ended April 9, 1942. Seventy thousand American and Philippine prisoners started on the infamous Bataan Death march.

The Japanese were brutal and ruthless and few of the POWS survived captivity. The death rate in Japanese prison camps was 26 percent, while at German POW prison camps the death rate was closer to 4 percent.

Japan’s senior enlisted men and officers were authorized to

abuse and mistreat those under their command. This practice was transferred to prisoners of war. Japanese military lived by the Bushido Code of conduct, that of the Samurai Warrior.

Surrender was not an option for the Samurai Warrior.

The captors felt entitled to torture, beat or otherwise mistreat prisoners of war.

According to the Bushido Code of conduct, once surrendering, a warrior loses all status and is considered a slave. Add to see doolittle page 4

“For the Navy, Earth Day isn’t simply a one day event,” said Rear Adm. Doug Morton, director of the Chief of Naval Operations Energy and Environmental Readiness Division. “Our stewardship

of the environment is a full time commitment. Our total force demonstrates this everyday on every ship and at each installation.”

The Pentagon will host an Earth Day speaker panel Tuesday entitled, “Four DoD Perspectives on Climate Change,” featuring senior leaders from each service branch. Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Energy, Installations, and Environment) Dennis McGinn will represent the DON on the panel.

Former U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin founded Earth Day in 1970 as a grassroots movement to raise awareness of environmental issues in the U.S. and worldwide.

Things were bleak on the homefront in April 1942.

The war news occupied the front page of every newspaper, all of it bad. Only three months into the war and the Blue Star flags in the windows morphed into gold.

The high school and college classes of 1942 graduated early to join up. Ships were being sunk off our coast.

Our losses of men, ships and real estate were cata-

strophic.

Americans were fearful of Japanese attacks on the mainland. Morale and hope were low. The tide changed on April 18, 1942.

“DOOLITTLE BOMBS TOKYO,” the headlines screamed in newspapers across the nation.

In its first offensive move, the U.S. attacked the home island of Honshu, including Japan’s capital city of Tokyo. Lt. Colonel James “Jimmy” Doolittle of the U. S. Army Air Corps was the intellectual architect and flight leader of the Tokyo Raid. The Japanese thought their island invulnerable yet 16 Army B-25 medium
