ust a few short years ago, NAS Key West had five credentialed Child Development Home providers caring for the children of their military neighbors in base housing. Today there are none. In fact, base housing residents are offering babysitting services to their neighbors. Illegally. “It’s a big problem. There are a lot of people doing it on base,” said Child and Youth Programs Director Christina Chaves. “They don’t have the training and the liability is on the command.” OPANVINST 1700.9E states under 2b - Any individual caring for other families’ children

for a total of 10 or more hours per week on a regular basis, paid or unpaid, must be a certified CDH provider. One child for one hour equals one child care hour. To provide day care on military installations, providers must meet Navy child care guidelines, have the CDH credential and be registered with the base CDC, said Chaves, who oversees CDH certification. “I’ve had them say ‘we are just watching our friends’ children.’ But friends won’t be friends if something should happen to their children,” Chaves said. NMC Relief Society campaign underway From NAS Key West Public Affair

he Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society fund drive for active duty military has officially kicked off at Naval Air Station Key West. The NMCRS fund drive is one of the only fund drives that the military does where every single dollar goes directly back to Sailors and Marines needing assistance.
