Y
oungsters waited patiently as grownups conducted the formalities of a ribbon cutting before pressing the button that started the water running at the new Sigsbee Splash Park Wednesday afternoon. An estimated 75 children headed for different areas of the park - fountains, bubblers, dumping buckets, spraying arches and a slide. The 5,200 square foot facility cost $713,000 to build, according to Tim Campbell, director of Naval Air Station Key West’s Morale, Welfare and
Recreation Department. “This is the fourth MWR project we have completed in the last year,” he said. “Those projects include the addition to the Youth Center, the new artificial turf on the ball fields and the Fitness Trail around the fields.” By the end of June, MWR will complete the replacement of playgrounds at the Youth Center and the Child Development Center. “This is a total investment of $5 million that your MWR team has been working on for many years,” Campbell told the crowd before the ribbon cutting.

SAAPM: Know your part, do your part to stop sexual assault From NAS Key West Public Affairs
A
pril is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month and this year’s DOD and Navy theme is “Eliminate Sexual Assault: Know Your Part. Do Your Part.” “This theme emphasizes Know Your Part, Do Your Part and that it is
very important that we all step up and be part of the prevention process,” said Naval Air Station Key West Sexual Assault Response Coordinator Jessica Kushon. SAAPM events throughout the month not only bring together both Navy and civilian services in support of SAPR initiatives but they have become a great way of sending the awareness and prevention mes-
sage as one voice across the fleet, she added. Among the local events is “Walk a Mile in Their Shoes,” which is a way of recognizing the victims and survivors of sexual assault. “Everyone on NAS Key West can participate anytime, anywhere,” Kushon said. “Walk, run, slog or stroll your miles and log them daily at anyone of the ‘WAMITS’ log books at
the fitness centers on Boca Chica, Trumbo, Sigsbee, Truman or at Fleet and Family Support Center. Or create your own but just make sure all entries get to her via email by April 27. “At the end of the month we will calculate who provided the most support in miles and award the winner with a one of a kind SAAPM ‘Walk a Mile in Their Shoes’ 2016 Trophy,” she added.
The Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions will present “Netflix, No Chill,” a Sexual Assault and Prevention training opportunity, from 2 - 3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. Military members and civilians are encouraged to attend. Jill Loftus, director of the Sexual Assault Prevention see SAAPM page 4
