e prepared for the annual visit of the endangered and protected terns that make their seasonal home on Naval Air Station Key West’s flat, gravel roofs. The least tern and Roseate tern migrate through Florida in the spring and are predominately seen on Truman and Sigsbee Park annexes as well as Boca Chica Field, said Carrie Backlund, NAS Key West natural resources manager. “Both birds are protected by the state of Florida and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act,” said Backlund. “The Roseate tern is also federally listed as threatened. “This protection means it see Terns page 2

O

nce again, Naval Air Station Key West’s Boca Chica Marina is leading the

way in best practices by becoming the first marina in Monroe County to earn the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Clean and Resilient Marina Award.

In October 2001, it was the first county marina and federal facility to earn the Clean Marina designation. Since that time most of the county’s marinas have followed suit and now carry

the Clean Marina designation, which focuses on incorporating best practices to protect the environment. see Marina page 3

Armed Forces Day celebrates military members From NAS Key West Public Affairs

T

his year marks the 65th anniversary of Armed Forces Day, established to recognize and honor all members of the armed forces.

The day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of May. At Naval Air Station Key West, active duty military representing all branches of service will compete Friday in the Armed Forces Command Challenge at Sigsbee Field.

On Aug. 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single day celebration stemmed from the unifica-

tion of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense. At the first observation of Armed Forces Day, President Harry S. Truman praised the work of the military services at home and across the seas.

“It is vital to the security of the nation and to the establishment of a desirable peace,” said Truman. “Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, 1950, marks the first combined see ARMED FORCES page 8
