e prepared for the annual visit of the endangered and protected terns that make their seasonal home on Naval Air Station Key West’s flat, gravel roofs.

The least tern and Roseate tern migrate through Florida in the spring and are predominately seen on Truman and Sigsbee Park annexes as well as Boca Chica Field, said Carrie Backlund, NAS Key West natural resources manager.

“Both birds are protected by the state of Florida and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act,” said Backlund. “The Roseate tern is also federally listed as threatened.

O

nce again, Naval Air Station Key West’s Boca Chica Marina is leading the

way in best practices by becoming the first marina in Monroe County to earn the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Clean and Resilient Marina Award.

In October 2001, it was the first county marina and federal facility to earn the Clean Marina designation.

Since that time most of the county’s marinas have followed suit and now carry

the Clean Marina designation, which focuses on incorporating best practices to protect the environment. see Marina page 3

Armed Forces Day celebrates military members From NAS Key West Public Affairs

T

his year marks the 65th anniversary of Armed Forces Day, established to recognize and honor all members of the armed forces.

The day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of May. At Naval Air Station Key West, active duty military representing all branches of service will compete Friday in the Armed Forces Command Challenge at Sigsbee Field.

On Aug. 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days.

The single day celebration stemmed from the unifica-

tion of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense.

At the first observation of Armed Forces Day, President Harry S. Truman praised the work of the military services at home and across the seas.

“It is vital to the security of the nation and to the establishment of a desirable peace,” said Truman.

No matter how small

have read and watched the movie, “Horton Hears a Who,” by Dr. Seuss many times, thanks to my children.

In the story Horton reminds everyone “A person is a person no matter how small!” And of course the entire population of Whoville is finally saved when the smallest of them all decides to participate with the entire city with a final, “YOPP!” So how does this relate to us today? I woke up this morning to once again see on my Facebook feed that Nepal had another devastating earthquake, which comes after previous quakes have already cost thousands of lives.

I had an email from my church seeking support in the continued efforts in helping residents in Texas who suffered damage from recent tornadoes.

It can seem overwhelming with all the chaos and disaster happening worldwide. You may look at it all and wonder, “What can I do? I am just one person.”

And as Horton might say to you, “A person is a person no matter how small.” Whoville required all the people to save their world. So when one shirks in the corner, the effects can be great, even if that person may be the smallest of all.

Backlund described the terns as small, nine - 17 inches in length, with a wingspan of 20 - 30 inches.

“They are light gray above, the top of their heads are black and they have a white forehead with a yellowish-orange bill that has with black tip,” she noted. “The chest is white and the tail forked. Their feet are yellowish-orange.

“The Roseate terns have a rosy tint on breast. The birds start nesting in April and are here through August.”

At NAS Key West the terns nest on flat, gravel roofs and gravel, rocky un-vegetated open areas on the airfield.

The adult birds are extremely sensitive to prolonged or frequent disturbance. The eggs and chicks require parental protection from daytime heat because they are highly susceptible to heat stress, Backlund said.

The following policies are in effect at all NAS Key West annexes: Routine work on rooftops should be scheduled outside of nesting season.

Do not access any flat roof - or very shallow pitched roofs - between April and August for any reason without first contacting the base Natural Resources Manager at (305) 797-9576.

“We’ve had clean marina recognitions for many years now, so it’s nice to have the added recognition for our efforts at Boca Chica Field,” said Capt. Steve McAlearney, commanding officer of Naval Air Station Key West. “I would like to recognize our excellent marina staff, as well as the boaters for their efforts in recycling, pumpout procedures and being stewards of the environment. We are proud to make this a great place for boaters to visit and call their home port.”

Boca Chica’s marina is one of only seven statewide that have received the Clean and Resilient Marina designation. It is also the

first - and currently the only - federal facility to earn the recognition, according to Ed Russell Jr., environmental consultant for Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection.

The FDEP introduced the new program, which is a Gulf of Mexico Alliance project, last summer. The Clean and Resilient Marina Initiative was established “to promote and expand resilient and environmentally responsible operation and best management practices at marinas,” according to a GOMA pamphlet.

NAS Key West Marinas Manager Billie Adkins was among a group of local marina managers who attended the first workshop at the Harvey Government Center in Key West.

“I felt that our marina should participate

in the program and followed up with Ed Russell to get the requirements for the Resilient Marina Designation,” he said.

Adkins, who began managing the marina in 1991, has steered its growth from a concession stand with sailboat rentals to a Marina Recreation facility with 120 slips, 20 moorings, a bar and grill, beach, picnic areas and an administrative office building with attached shower and laundry facilities.

“The inspection for the ‘Resilient Marina Designation’ is focused on how well the marina is designed to survive a storm, marina storm procedures, preparation and sustainability,” Adkins said, noting inspections are made annually.

Boca Chica Marina is designed to withstand a 150 mph lateral wind load, he said.

Operational procedures are in place for the detailed preparation for each different hurricane condition and for recovery after storms.

Buildings are constructed with surge levels in mind, Adkins added. In 2005, Hurricane Wilma flooded buildings and damaged the older wooden docks. Electrical receptacles are now above the surge level from Hurricane Wilma. All walls are concrete or green board with tile to handle wet conditions and the air conditioning equipment is mounted above flood levels when possible.

“The inspectors commented on how well the facility is maintained and were pleased with the order and condition of the marina along with the written procedures for preparation and for after storm clean up.”

Start moving: Physical fitness starts with motion From Naval Hospital Jacksonville Wellness Center

M

ay is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, a great time to renew one’s commitment to a healthy, active lifestyle.

Less than half of all adults in the U.S. get the recommended physical activity each week.

An effective method of enhancing physical performance, over traditional endurance-based training, is through high intensity interval training. It’s a cardio respiratory training technique that involves repeated periods of high intensity effort followed by either a low intensity period or complete rest.

Most endurance workouts, such as walking, running, or stair climbing, are performed at a moderate intensity, or an exertion level of about five - six on a scale of zero to 10. High

intensity intervals, however, are typically done at an exertion level of seven or higher but last for shorter periods of time, typically a few seconds to several minutes.

T o t a l workout time can range from four - 30 U.S. Navy photo m i n u t e s , and can be done in a variety of settings, such as on exercise machines with variable speeds and resistance, group fitness classes, outdoor running, and even resistance training.

Benefits of HIIT can include improved heart and lung function, enhanced metabolic function and

rate; increased maximal oxygen consumption; improved blood pressure and cholesterol, and reduced body fat.

Elite athletes and sedentary individuals alike have benefited from HIIT. If just starting an exercise program, individuals should consult a physician and obtain medical clearance.

Recommended HIIT guidelines include exercising within one’s own capabilities, allowing adequate rest between exercises and workout sessions, and maintaining proper form for all exercises. For best results, add one or two sessions per week to regular exercise routines and work towards a balance of HIIT with continuous aerobic exercise.

T

he Special Forces U n d e r w a t e r Operations School celebrated its 50th anniversary Thursday by dedicating its headquarters building in honor of Col. Ola Mize, a Medal of Honor recipient who is credited with starting the school on Fleming Key. Mize, who also served in Vietnam, initiated the training program on Fleming Key in 1964, where thousands have been trained over the past 50 years. Mize died March 12, 2014, at the age of 82.

In addition to honoring Mize, the training center officially dedicated the Sgt. Maj. Jerry Patton Drop zone, following the demonstration.

Patton died Oct. 15, 2008,

during High Altitude High Opening training while assigned to the Special Operations Command. He was preparing for deployment to Afghanistan. From 2002 to 2005, Patton was assigned as cadre at the Special Forces Underwater Operations School.

Working with Naval Air Station Key West School Liaison Officer Yoli Eldred, Eaton arranged to have 600 local school students watched the demonstration, which included a helocast and a static line jump over water, as well as a High Altitude Low Opening jump and a beach landing.
