aval Air Station Key West’s Sailors celebrated the Navy’s 241st birthday Thursday with a presentation and cake cutting ceremony on Boca Chica Field. A tribute to the Navy was read by Sailors representing Naval Air Station Key West’s Navy Ball Committee, the First Class Petty Officers Association, and the Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions. The tribute and video presentation reflected this year’s theme “America’s Sailor, for 241 years: Tough. Bold. Ready.” Cake and ice cream followed for the estimated 150 Sailors attending the event. Thursday’s anniversary recognizes action by the Continental Congress in 1775 to arm ships for the purpose of “… intercepting such transports as may be laden with warlike stores and other supplies for our enemies …” see navy page 2

Annual School Impact Aid $urvey underway By Dawn Mills

NAS Key West School Liaison Officer

I

mpact Aid Survey cards were sent home with local students this week and officials are urging parents to complete the surveys, which could bring additional funds to school coffers. About 11 percent of the students attending Monroe County schools are federally-connected, according to

district records. During the fall of 2014, the Federal Impact Aid Survey counted 932 federally-connected students countywide; which was an increase from the fall of 2015. That increase was attributed in part to a push made by Monroe County schools and Naval Air Station Key West to get parents and guardians of all school-aged children to complete and

turn in the annual survey. Every parent/guardian of a school-aged child enrolled in Monroe County schools should receive a Monroe County Pupil Parent Information Form. Students were instructed to give the form to their parents/guardians for completion and then to return the form to school no later than Oct. 26. Please support the efforts to get funding by completing the survey.

The survey is conducted by Monroe County schools and collected information is kept confidential. It is important that the survey form be filled out correctly or it will be disqualified. Parents/guardians must not use P.O. Box addresses for home or work addresses. In order to assist with street addresses for on base facilities, it is requested that the see aid page 3
