Four-legged military family members were treated to an Army veterinarian checkup Thursday during the three-day clinic at Naval Air Station Key West’s Sigsbee Park.

Nineteen pet owners active and retired military and DOD civilians - registered for the clinic. The veterinarian was scheduled to see 28 pets.

EIDWS qualification opportunities improve From Navy Information Dominance Forces Public Affairs

N

avy Information Dominance Forces on Tuesday released enlisted information dominance warfare specialist qualification program improvements and standards, making the qualification more easily obtainable.

The EIDWS warfare designation

program was implemented in 2010 to qualify information dominance corps personnel in the aerographer’s mate, cryptologic technician, intelligence specialist and information systems technician ratings.

Attaining the EIDWS designation signifies that an eligible Sailor has achieved a level of excellence and proficiency in information dominance. Additionally, the see EIDWS page 3

Small changes have huge impacts

L

June 12 1917 - USS Jupiter (AC 3), which transports the First Naval Aeronautical Detachment, arrives at Pauillac, France, before World War I. USS Jupiter is later converted into the Navy’s first aircraft carrier USS Langley (CV 1).

June 13 1881 - The bark-rigged wooden steamship Jeannette sinks after she is crushed in an Arctic ice pack during the expedition to reach the North Pole through the Bering Strait. Only 13 of her crew survive.

June 14 1777 - The Continental Congress adopts the design of present U.S. flag of 13 stripes and 13 stars.

June 15 1963 - The combat stores ship, USS Mars (AFS 1), is launched.

June 16 1959 - A P4M “Mercator” is fired on by two North Korean MiG aircraft while on a routine flight over international waters off Korea.

June 17 1898 - President William McKinley signs into law a Congressional bill authorizing the establishment of the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps.

ike many parents of school-aged children, my wife and I are trying to survive the first week of summer vacation. I am writing this with not even a full week under my belt and I am advocating for year-round school.

Of course, the school that they attend sends summer work home to prepare them for the next year.

Why do they do this?

Apparently, studies show that for just two months off of school a child’s learning can digress three months. This in turns puts them behind the curve at the start of the next school year.

It’s the small things - like reading - that help to keep them up to speed.

Small changes can have huge impacts. If you steer a rudder a degree off course, it may not seem like much to begin with, but over time you will be miles off course.

In our spiritual walks, we can find ourselves slowly compromising our faith in ways that might not seem like much, but as time goes on we find ourselves in mid-

dle of the ocean wondering where we went wrong. Sometimes, we will blame God in some situations because we don’t see the changes we made that led us there.

One of the biggest challenges being in the military is keeping a routine. By the time you finally establish one, you are negotiating orders with the detailer.

Then you arrive to your new command, only to find that you have an entirely different battle rhythm you must align with your life.

CHAPLAIN'S When I talk to CORNER Sailors, it is usually the spiritual life that takes the hit. They stop going to church because they cannot find NAS Key West one they like Command or is similar to Chaplain the previous Lt. church. Their Ethan Everts devotional time is off because they have a new schedule for work. Another issue is they lose community support they built at the last command or hometown and that makes them feel isolated or they lose accountability.

The list can go on, but the

effects are the same. A few small changes can have enormous impacts.

This is why we are called disciples. It takes discipline to follow God. Just like running, if you take a few weeks or months off, it can be hard to get back to where you were when you stopped. If you give into the frustration, you will find yourself in a cyclical pattern that will continue to be hard to overcome.

Just like small changes veered you off course, small changes can put you back on course. You do too much too soon, you will likely give up. Instead, take it one day at a time. Schedules might change. Friends and family may change or pressure you not to do certain activities.

Nevertheless, the discipline you continue to display will bring you to the destination you are aiming to find.

One way to stay on course is attending worship at the Truman Chapel at 10:30 a.m.

Social reform led to end of Navy’s early days of flogging

F

rom the times of the British colonization of the North American continent the penal codes and subsequent practices to deal with crime were harsh.

Pickpockets were publicly hanged in England.

Crowds gathered to watch the executions, pickpockets worked the crowds. To be hanged, drawn and quartered was the 1315 statutory

penalty for men convicted of high treason; women were burned at the stake.

until our independence was declared. In the early 1800s, the revivalist religions’ humanitarian social reform movement addressed the abominable conditions of enlisted servitude in the Navy.

The American seaman, a free man, was entitled to the protections of the 8th amendment of the Bill of Rights, which prohibited cruel and unusual pun-

ishment. While serving in a Navy man-o-war, a seaman had a life no better than that of a slave or indentured servant, and in some cases worse.

It is not difficult to understand a penal code governing that a navy may, by necessity, be more stringent than that required to maintain good order and discipline ashore. The Navy was governed by the Articles of War, but no guide is

capable of covering all circumstances needed to fairly adjudicate punishment for alleged misdemeanors.

A captain of a man-owar must maintain subordination of all persons under his command, whether they are berthed in a stateroom or a hammock in the foc’sle. Some captains were tyrannical and threw the rule book see UCMJ page 5

Don’t leave the dock without knowing the rules of the road. The Key West Sail and Power Squadron is

hosting a seminar on the inland and international rules, or COLREGS, for the recreational boater. The seminar, which lasts about two hours, begins at 10 a.m. June 20, at the squadron building, 5205 College Road.

Through examples of the 37 Rules of the Road, boaters will discover how to avoid collisions in various situations, the differences between power and sailboat rules, special rules for fishing vessels among other important information on making your boat outings safe ones. This seminar is also a starting point for study preparation for the USCG License examination.

EIDWS insignia means the Sailor is competent in his or her rating and has acquired additional general knowledge to enhance his or her understanding of the role of the IDC as it pertains to warfighting, mission effectiveness and command survivability. Sailors can earn EIDWS qualification only through a formal qualification program.

“This has been a long work in progress over the past year,” said NAVIDFOR Force Master Chief Toby Ruiz.

One of the most significant changes focuses on which commands are authorized to administer a program. In 2013, nearly 150 commands were conducting their own EIDWS program.

Overseeing so many programs made it difficult to ensure the program was being implemented in an equitable and consistence manner.

NAVIDFOR revised the previous instruction to align requirements and the number of commands authorized to run a program.

Men’s health month time for lifestyle reflection

welve percent of men aged 18 years and older are in fair or poor health, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

June is Men’s Health Month, a time to raise the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection.

While men should make health a priority and take active daily steps to become healthier and stronger, there are many easy things that men - and women - can do to improve and maintain health.

“By proactively getting the right health services, screenings and treatments, we help our chances of living a longer, healthier life,” said Capt. John Le Favour, Naval Hospital Jacksonville commanding officer.

“Things such as age, health and family history, lifestyle choices, and other factors impact our health care needs and how often we need it,” Le Favour said.

“That’s why early detec-

tions important.

“So, we encourage you to get regular checkups and tests to find problems before they start,” added Le Favour.

Insufficient sleep can be associated with a number of chronic diseases and conditions such as diabetes, obesity and depression. Sleep needs change with age seven to nine hours is ideal for adults.

About 30 percent of U.S. men smoke cigarettes. It’s never too late to quit, plus it produces immediate and long-term benefits - lowers risk of heart disease, cancer, lung disease and other illnesses. And avoid secondhand smoke - it can cause problems similar to those that smoke.

Thirty-eight percent of U.S. men are overweight.

At least two-and-a-half hours of moderate-intensity aerobic activity is recommended each week for adults. And participate in muscle-strengthening activities at least two days a week. Work all major muscle groups to include legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms. Spread

the activity out during the week for the best benefits.

Men should eat a variety of fruits and vegetables every day, as they are sources of the many vitamins and minerals that protect from chronic diseases.

Choose healthy snacks and limit items high in calories, sugar, salt, fat and alcohol.

Physical or emotional tension is often signs of stress. Sometimes stress can be good, but harmful when severe - feeling overwhelmed and out of control.

Self-care and social support can be the best way to manage stress. Avoid drugs and alcohol, stay active and find support when needed.

Patients should see their primary care manager for regular checkups. Because certain diseases may not have symptoms, regular checkups can help diagnose issues early - before becoming a problem.

Pay attention to obvious signs and symptoms such as chest pain and shortness of breath.

Individuals should also track personal numbers like blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol and

body mass index. PCMs can identify what tests are needed and frequency needed. And get vaccinated.

Immunizations help maintain health, regardless of age. They can protect individuals from disease.

Mackenzie was courtmartialed and exonerated by a jury of his peers. The public was outraged; he never got another ship.

This event demonstrated a need for better officer procurement and on Oct. 10, 1845, and in response, the

Naval Academy was established to train and educate professional naval officers in naval science and ethics.

The objectives of the social reformers were to raise the status of seamen serving in our country’s man-o-war.

The seamen were captives in a work environment whereby a young midshipman, a mere child of an elite family, could cause a grown man to be flogged for some minor - real or imagined - offense.

The cat-o-nine tails not only damaged the body, it tore at a man’s soul; it brought into doubt one’s

self -worth. Flogging was outlawed in 1850 in spite of opposition from many senior officers. The Navy survived.

This writer witnessed the same opposition to the Uniformed Code of Military Justice in 1950. The Navy survived.

The status of the seaman rose while simultaneously preserving command authority and discretion.

The UMJC still stand and is alive and well.

aval Air Station Key West Fitness Director Danna Gardner held Command Fitness Leader certification training for 26 Sailors at Boca Chica Field Monday through Friday.

Though some trainees were stationed locally in the Key West area, Sailors from around the world traveled to attend the CFL course, which is held at NAS Key West once a year.

Trainees kicked-off the course with the physical readiness test. All participants are required to score in the excellent or above categories.

Gardner conducted classroom training in Navy fitness policies and physical training circuit routines outlined in the Navy Operational and Fitness Fueling System program.

The certification course concluded with trainees leading small groups in command physcial training.

NAS Key West CFL YNC Elton Corker and Assistant CFL AWS2 Juan Sarango Castillo also assisted as instructors during the week-long certification course.

Since vet services ended in 2012, the Army Veterinarian Command switched to an electronic records system called Remote Online Veterinarian Record (ROVR). The system makes it possible to access pet records from every military vet clinic across the world.

The reason for the delay in bringing services to Key West was veterinarians needed time to learn the system, Marble said. They now have the knowledge and ability to access the system from base facilities, making it possible to give Key West more frequent visits.

Since the last clinic in 2012, NAS Key West has been working on a plan to make veterinary services more frequent, said Marble.

So far, the clinic is scheduled to open quarterly; it could be offered more frequently depending on the incoming Army veterinarian, said Staff Sgt. Trent Crews, with the Army Public Health Command.

The next vet clinic is set for some time in September, said Marble.

“The people that offer the clinic are always so nice, efficient and very experienced in their job field.”

NAS Key West’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation previously ran the clinic, providing space, maintaining records and selling prescribed medications.

“MWR has been a great support system for this clinic,” Marble said “They provided us with this building, which really set this in to motion.”
