Staff dressed as elves will assist youngsters in activities designed for all ages crafts, letters to Santa and games. Lines to Santa will have different activities to keep children entertained while they wait.

The Home Depot is featuring Santa’s workshop, where children can create special crafts. Youngsters can also have their faces

painted by Nikki, and enter to win one of two six-foot holiday stocking and meet Santa.

Numerous volunteers are assisting MWR staff to support this annual event.

hope everyone had a restful and enjoyable Thanksgiving.

My family went a different direction this year and visited Disney World.

It was the first time for the kids. We did the rides. We ate at Cinderella’s Castle. We saw different Disney characters. My kids built light sabers. We ate a lot of food. We walked a lot of miles and had a dance party in the streets of Magic Kingdom.

We had lots of fun. My kids want to go back and my wife was planning the next trip while we were driving home.

When there is fun like this, it is hard to want to go back to the grind. School, work, chores, cooking and more awaited us as we walked through our door.

The magic is starting to wear off as our not-so-magical kingdom requires us again.

Of course, if it was not for this work, we would never have experienced the joys of that magical kingdom.

It reminded me of the anticipation we have toward eternity.

This past Advent Sunday was on the hope of Christ’s return.

As we celebrate his first Advent,

we also look toward his second Advent in great anticipation and hope.

Revelations 21 describes our future with such joy and hope.

God will create a new heaven and earth. We will be gathered with all the saints throughout time.

There will be no CHAPLAIN'S more pain or sorCORNER row and sin will be gone. There will be rejoicing in heaven.

The “New Jerusalem” will be such a splenNAS Key West dor to see with its Command Chaplain walls of jasper, a city of gold that Lt. Ethan Everts is so pure it is as clear as glass and jewels will be the foundations of the walls. God will be among the saints and because of his glory there will be no need for the sun or moon. There will be the “River of Life” that will be as bright as crystal. There will be trees bearing fruit each month.

Not even Disney can create such a magical kingdom.

However, this is what God created for us so we could be in communion with him for all eternity.

What a promise to cling to with hope and joy!

Nevertheless, it is not easy to get there. Now, Christ did the real work for us to have salvation, but that does not mean we can just sit around. It can be long and tedious at times. It can require a lot of out of you physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

Thessalonians 3 and 5 describe that we need to walk in love and light to have this hope when Christ returns. It is hard to love in a world that hates. It is hard to walk in the light when we are surrounded by darkness. There are times you want to quit, but that is why in these chapters Paul tells us to encourage each other in this truth.

To travel with no goal in mind eventually wears on you or keeps you from striving to get there.

Think if our physical fitness assessment required us to run the 1.5 miles without a time limit. If you can run 1.5 miles you pass. How many of us would train? Worse, what if they just told you to run and you had no end in sight? Goals push us forward.

This is why we remind ourselves about heaven. There are hymns about it because it is see kingdom page 3

Fear drove effort to inter Japanese Americans during WWII

I

am sure the reader has a vague recollection of hearing something about Japanese Americans rounded up and placed in “concentration camps.”

I can assure you most, if not all, of what you have heard is wrong or, at the very least, lacks context.

The designation concentration camp was not part of our vocabulary in 1941.

Those camps were a wellkept secret.

Later, there were rumors of places you wouldn’t want to be, but one’s wildest imagination could not visualize the level of evil necessary to perpetuate the reality of what a group of human beings could do to another group of human beings. No better example of “man’s inhumanity to man” exists.

It would be a manifest

injustice to even hint there is in any way a correlation or moral HISTORICAL equivaPERSPECTIVES lency to the American internment camps occupied by Japanese Columnist Americans Jim King d u r i n g WWII and concentration camps that exterminated human beings in Germany.

Granted, the welcome wagon did not greet all newcomers to America with the same basket of goodies. We were a nation of European emigrants who fled their native lands to avoid political strife, wars or to seek economic opportunity.

Our culture was primarily Eurocentric.

The Orient was a dark mystery and little effort was made to distinguish one ethnic group from another. There existed legal Asian exclusionary laws on the books starting in 1880.

Asians were feared and discriminated against as no other immigrant group. It was nothing for us to be proud of.

Some of that fear stemmed from historical events.

In 1853 and 1854 when Commodore Matthew Perry opened Japan to trade, the country did not have a modern navy. Fifty years later Japan had a steel ship bluewater navy. In 1895 Japan defeated China in a war.

German Kaiser Wilhelm is reported to have coined the term “Yellow Peril.”

On June 1895 the

Sandusky, Ohio, Register reported: “The yellow peril is more threatening than ever. Japan has made in a few years as much progress as other nations have made in centuries.”

In May 1904 Admiral Heihachhiro Togo destroyed the Russian fleet near the Tsushima Islands. Soon Japan went on a rampage of violence to include mass executions of Chinese civilians and Southeast Asians by the millions.

The relocation of Japanese Americans during WWII was based upon fear. The authorities were afraid of spying and espionage. We were at war and Japanese Americans, rightly or wrongly, were associated with the enemy. see WWII page 5

If you see something that doesn’t look right, report it!

Write down license plates of suspicious vehicles; take notice of the driver and occupants. While socializing at parties, avoid talking shop, as not everyone needs to know that information.

Last but not least, if traveling during the holiday season, avoid using military duffel bags or bags

with government logos or patches.

When traveling, use concealed luggage tags so your personally identifiable information is not out there for all to see and gather at the luggage turnstile. Don’t use rank or title to reserve tickets or hotel rooms.

Share your travel plans with someone you trust and has a need-to-know. Do leave your home as if it is being lived in, use timers on lights and televisions.

Ensure your mail is collected.

Do look out for one another, be safe, stay aware and enjoy this holiday period.

The Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels are coming to Key West on April 2 and 3. The air show also will feature other military and civilian performers.
