The $5.5 million project includes expansive window and sliding glass door replacement and the installation of new weather heads for electrical wire protection, and roof replacements.

Details of the renovation will be discussed at the huddle, which meets from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. at the Sigsbee Park Community Center.

“Balfour Beatty Communities is dedicated to providing military service members with quality housing, and we are working diligently to renovate our current portfolio of Sigsbee Park duplexes,” a BBC news release noted.

“I am proud of all we accomplish here at FRCSE Detachment Key West which is demonstrated by the hard work and dedication of our Sailors,” Catala added.

ou may have seen the photo in the “Southernmost Flyer” last week of Naval Air Station Key West’s Judge Advocate General Lt. Emily Daniels wearing a protective dog suit while acting as a decoy for K-9 training.

I, too, was a volunteer in this training, along with LN1 Quenise Crigler. I had fun in the whole evolution.

Yes, I said I had fun. It was a bucket-list item I always wanted to do. Don’t worry; I have talked with Fleet and Family Support Center to make sure I wasn’t in need of counseling. I think the jury is still out on that, but the experience did inspire my column today.

First off, I have a new respect for K-9 teams and what they do. I also have a new respect for the power of the dog. As I stood there in my dog suit waiting to be attacked, I looked into the dog’s eyes. I felt like I was a juicy rib eye steak wait-

ing to be devoured.

At that point, I thought about my decision to be willingly attacked by a dog. However, I also knew the handlers were top notch and I was wearing a protective suit.

So even though there was some pressure and a small amount of pain from the dog’s CHAPLAIN'S teeth pinching me, I was able to walk CORNER away unscathed.

This whole exercise made me think about spiritual dangers we face. 1 Pet. 5.8 NAS Key West states the devil Command Chaplain prowls around like Lt. a roaring lion seekEthan Everts ing someone to devour. I am glad I was facing a dog and not a lion. Yet, I must also recognize that I tmust be aware there is a spiritual lion possibly hunting me.

So what must we do? We wear a God suit.

The only reason I could face those dogs was because I knew I was protected. The only way I can walk safely in this world is because I am protected by God. I may be attacked, but if I am clothed by God then the pain is reduced and I can walk away from the struggle spiritually unharmed.

Notice I did not say you would not be affected. I felt things through the suit. I had marks on my arm. I still had to struggle with the dog.

Nonetheless, I left unharmed and had confidence I could face that dog again when wearing the suit.

You may get some bumps and bruises when in your struggles, but the damage is minimal when you’re protected. And after facing those trials, you can walk away with a new boldness, not pride, that you can face future trials as well.

So how do we get this God-suit?

The verses before the passage give us a clue.

Verse 5 tells us to subject ourselves to elders and clothe ourselves with humility towards one another. So, we should learn from the experience of others and not be prideful in listening to advice.

Verses 6 -7 instruct us to humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God and cast our anxieties on him because he cares for you. If you have troubles, ask God for help.

The beginning of verse 8 states to be sober-minded and watchful.

Basically, be on guard. If I never saw the dog coming, my experience would have been different even with the suit. My hands or face could have been bitten.

The question is never, “if I will be attacked,” but, “when will I be attacked.” So keep yourself protected and stay alert. And if you are wondering, I would get back in that suit again for more training.

In February 2005, Cat­ala reported to AIMD Bruns­wick, Maine, where he completed his collateral duty inspector qualification, a designation that requires him to inspect all maintenance work within the shop. During this tour, he was recognized as AIMD Sailor of the Quarter. Three years later, he reported to USS Nassau (LHA 4) in Norfolk, Virginia, where he worked as a quality assurance representative in the Quality Assurance Division.

During his tour, Catala was recognized as a USS Nassau SOQ. In 2010, Catala received orders to USS Wasp (LHD 1) in Norfolk. During an extensive shipyard period, he volunteered to support the maiden deployment of USS Green Bay (LPD 20) homeported in San Diego. While aboard USS Green Bay, Catala stood up the SE division and all required maintenance programs. He was promoted to first class petty officer and was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his efforts.

Catala consistently reviews maintenance and performance practices to improve SE availability to customers crediting his success to using continuous process improvement.

In addition to his work responsibilities, Catala’s collateral duties include Junior Enlisted Association mentor, command senior section leader, Navy and Marine Corps Society representative, command casualty assistance calls officer, command indoctrination leader and First Class Petty Officers Association master at arms.

He also volunteers for Habitat for Humanity and the Lion’s Club Literacy Association.

A native of Angeles City, Philippines, Catala moved to the United States in August 1998 and joined the U.S. Navy the same year. After completing boot camp at Recruit Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois, he attended Aviation Support Equipment “A” School in Pensacola, Florida.

he Navy Exchange Service Command has been offering students a chance to help pay for college through its A-OK Student Reward

Program since 1997.

The A-OK Student Reward Program offers all qualified students to participate in a quarterly drawing for monetary awards of $2,500, $1,500, $1,000 or $500 for a total of $5,500 per quarter.

The next drawing is at the end of February 2015.

Any eligible full-time student that has a B-grade point average equivalent or better, as determined by their school system, may enter the draw-

f you’re someone who has always had trouble keeping track of you expenses, or you don’t know how to start saving, here are five tips to becoming a responsible spender: Balance your checkbook.

It’s not as hard as it seems, and it’s crucial in avoiding banking overdraft fees. It’s also a highly effective strategy to avoid overspending and impulse buying. You don’t have to be a math genius - you can use a calculator, and if you’re on the

go, most phones have a calculator app. Writing down everything that you spend in a checkbook register will allow you to know exactly how much money you have to spend, and you will be less likely to spend money on unnecessary items.

If you don’t want to use a checkbook register, track your spending with an Excel spreadsheet.

Create a spending plan.

Don’t think of it as a budget that limits you. Think of it as a tool that is helping you to set a goal and make a plan. You will be able to identify what you’re spend-

ing money on and where you need to cut back so that you can spend smarter the next time. Be as accurate as possible when creating your plan, and when you pay for something not in your budget, add it to your current spending plan as an “unplanned expense,” so you know how much money is going to things for which you may not have planned.

Save your receipts.

Saving your receipts might seem tedious, but it can be very helpful in tracking your expenses. Carry an envelope in your purse or keep one in a junk drawer

at home. At the end of each month, divide the receipts into categories - groceries, eating out, entertainment, household staples - this will help you identify where your money is going and where you need to cut back.

Review your monthly bank statement. You might be surprised at the amount of money spent just on eating out at lunch. Set a weekly limit for now that you’re much more aware of where your money is going.

Purple Up project for military children Sigsbee Charter School plans to celebrate April’s Month of the Military Child with a “Purple Up Video.”

The school is seeking videos with messages recognizing military children and the sacrifices they make as their parents serve. Participants in the videos are asked to wear purple, the color chosen for this project.
