About the artists THE IRISH TENORS Finbar Wright, Anthony Kearns and Ronan Tynan have been touring together as The Irish Tenors since 1998, with sold-out shows at Radio City Music Hall, Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, The Hollywood Bowl and major concert halls throughout the world. Their faces and voices are familiar to PBS audiences through several specials, including the Ellis Island recordings, which have sold a million CDs and DVDs. Additionally, he has conducted orchestras for Judy Collins, Petula Clark and Neal Boyd.

Butler is also resident artist, co-director of the musical theater program and music director of the symphony orchestra at Ohio Northern University. In his 10 seasons at the school, he has been music director for more than 200 concerts and productions, and has written more than 100 music arrangements for the dance program, musical theater, symphony and various artists.

verall, the career of George Frideric Handel resembles that favorite symbol of eighteenth-century England: the wheel of fortune.

The man who was born Georg Friedrich Händel to a barber-surgeon in Halle (less than 100 miles from J.S. Bach’s birthplace) settled in London in 1712 and made England his home until he died.

Handel found admiring royal and aristocratic patrons there but also enjoyed success as a musical entrepreneur, managing the production of a

prolific series of Italian operas which he wrote for the London stage. Then, after his reputation and fortune soared, fashions changed and Handel came close to the brink of ruin. It was through his cultivation of the English oratorio — essentially, opera in disguise, without the costumes — that he turned his luck around once more.

Messiah belongs to this pivotal turning point in Handel’s career, when he was shifting his focus away from the genre of tragic opera (opera seria) that had become a central preoccupation of his London career. In fact, it was with opera (Rinaldo, in 1711) that Handel scored his first hit in London. Opera seria involved setting librettos in Italian which recounted stories from mythology or history. It was a genre calculated in part to showcase the star singers of the era, often with spectacular (and spectacularly expensive) special effects as part of the staging. By the late 1730s, the high costs of production were making it an unsustainable business model. What’s more, significant changes in the English public’s musical taste could not be ignored. After Messiah, Handel ceased writing Italian operas altogether and concentrated mostly on oratorios in English.

Handel cultivated an English variation on the older oratorio idea, cleverly mixing a sense of moral uplift with the entertainment value of opera, minus the expense, costumes, and fussy, overpaid egos. Oratorio had an additional appeal, in that it seemed more acceptable to emerging middle-class audiences wary of the scandal-tinged world of opera. But this association with the sphere of secular performance generated some initial resistance to Messiah.

After producing a highly successful subscription series of both oratorios and operas in Dublin in the 1741-42 season, Handel chose to conclude it by presenting the world premiere of Messiah in the spring of 1742. Despite the praise the new work won from its Dublin audiences, back in London — where Handel cautiously introduced Messiah under the title “New Sacred Oratorio” in 1743 — it became the subject of controversy as a debate raged in the press.

Messiah’s method of setting actual scriptural texts, as well as its delineation of Jesus within a genre that could be performed “for diversion and amusement,” even triggered charges of blasphemy,

W hat to listen fo r Handel’s musical expression homes in on the universal emotions that underlie each stage of the Christian redemption narrative. Handel was above all a man of the theater, and his operatic genius for establishing the mood to suit a given situation is everywhere apparent. But in opera, Handel typically accomplishes this through a lengthy chain of arias. The centrality of the chorus in Messiah allows for greater diversity. Part One establishes a pattern of recitative, aria, and chorus, which then allows for further variation in the other two parts.

Handel moreover draws on the gamut of international styles of his era, mixing highly wrought, thrillingly complex Northern European counterpoint alongside straightforward, Italianate lyricism, majestic French rhythms, and homophonic choruses. He avails himself as well of an astonishing range of colors in the accompanying textures, though with a remarkable economy of instrumentation. Notice, for example, how the trumpets remain silent in Part One until “Glory to God,” and are subsequently kept in the wings until the “Hallelujah!” chorus at the end of Part Two. (Incidentally, in contrast to what is often assumed, the glory this chorus depicts refers not to the moment of Christ’s resurrection but to the triumph of redemption).

definite article — “the Messiah” — in its title).

There is very little dramatic impersonation of characters. The narrative is indirect and suggestive, and, as has been often noted, downright confusing to anyone not familiar with the implied events involving the life of Jesus. Jennens divides the libretto into three acts (although he calls them “parts”), much like the organization of a baroque opera. Part One centers around prophecy and the nativity of Jesus, ending with his miracles (this is the part of the oratorio that is most closely tied to the Christmas season). Following its evocation of hope comes a condensed version of the Passion story of sacrifice in Part Two. Part Three concludes with the implications of Christ’s redemption of humanity from the fall of Adam.

although these were leveled against the secular context of the performances rather than Handel’s music itself.

The fretting subsided within a few years, although the only times Handel led Messiah in a non-secular space were in his last years, when he gave midday performances in the newly built chapel of the Foundling Hospital. (The fact that the composer donated proceeds from Messiah concerts to charitable causes added to the work’s allure.) During his last decade, Handel conducted annual performances that became a highlight of the season. These were always given in the spring, at Eastertide. It was only after his death that the association of Messiah with the Christmas season took root.

Handel also introduced changes at several of these revivals. For the most part, these involved substitutions or rewrites of arias. They reflected practical performance conditions and took into account the limitations or strengths of the particular soloists on hand. In fact, even the Dublin premiere varied somewhat from the score Handel had written out beforehand. For the revival of 1750, for example, since the castrato Gaetano Guadagni was available (he later created the role of Orfeo in Gluck’s famous opera), Handel recast “But who may abide the day of his coming” to include a dizzyingly virtuosic setting — one of countless remarkable instances of Handelian word painting to reflect verbal images in music — of the phrase “a refiner’s fire.”

Although we tend to think of Messiah as the quintessential English oratorio, its text represents an unusual approach to the genre. Librettist Charles Jennens had collaborated previously with Handel and likely compiled the book for Israel in Egypt (first presented in 1739) which anticipates the method of construction of Messiah, arranging actual texts from the bible. But the process is less straightforward in Messiah. Jennens — a wealthy patron who was nevertheless an outsider, disaffected with contemporary English politics — juxtaposes extracts from both the Old and the New Testaments to represent the basic narrative of Christian redemption. Rather than a biographical sketch of the life of Jesus, Messiah concerns the very idea of divinity becoming manifest in human history (hence the lack of the

range Handel explores, encompassing in Part One alone the fathomless darkness associated with the period of universal waiting for a savior; the oasis-like calm of the purely instrumental “Pastoral Symphony,” with its evocation of the music of shepherds; and the dancing exuberance of “Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion.” Handel continually finds freshly inventive ways to “paint” the words through music (witness the “straying” lines of “All we like sheep”) but subtler surprises are often hidden within his settings as well. In that same chorus, Handel engineers a detour from the cheerful mood that predominates into the tragic minor when the consequences of human failure are suggested.

Amid all this variety, by the end of Part Three Handel has taken us on a journey that will later become familiar in the symphonies of Beethoven — the passage from darkness to enlightenment

and final victory. The “Hallelujah!” chorus may seem unbeatable, yet somehow Handel manages to follow it with still more glorious music: the soaring certainty of “The trumpet shall sound” and the progression of the choral finale, with its fugal setting of “Amen.” As the voices weave their threads together, that final word becomes a serene chant, all-encompassing in its resonance.

In addition to four vocal soloists and four-part chorus, the version of Handel’s scoring for Messiah used in these performances call for an orchestra of 2 oboes, bassoon, 2 trumpets, timpani, strings and continuo.

About the artists LEI XU, soprano Soprano Lei Xu is from China and recently finished her training in the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at the Metropolitan Opera.

She graduated from The Juilliard School’s Artist Diploma in Opera Studies Program in 2012. She made her Met debut in 2010 as the First Priestess in the Met HD TV broadcast production of Iphigénie en Tauride, where she performed with Plácido Domingo and Susan Graham. She also performed Echo in Ariadne auf Naxos, with Fabio Luisi conducting. Her engagements in 2011 with the Met included Dew Fairy in Hansel and

Gretel and covering the role of Helena in the new production of Enchanted Island. Last season, Xu appeared on the Met stage as the First Bridesmaid in Le Nozze di Figaro, as a singer in La Rondine and as a flower maiden in Wagner’s Parsifal.

Xu began her classical studies at age 17 at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music with professor Ruo-e Liu. She received her master’s degree from Juilliard, where she performed Pamina in Die Zauberflöte and Ilia in Idomeneo. She has participated in several music festivals, including Ravinia Festival’s Steans Institute for Young Artists; the Marlboro Music Festival, where she studied with Richard Goode and Mitsuko Uchida; and the Chautauqua Music Festival, where she performed Poppea in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea.

HYONA KIM, mezzosoprano Lauded by The New York Times as “a dark toned, agile mezzosoprano,” Hyona Kim was a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 2010. In 2013, she was the Debut Award Winner of the Joy in Singing Competition. She was also the first prize winner of the Gerda Lissner Competition, and a multiple grant winner at the Licia Albanese-Puccini and Giulio Gari Competitions. She has won the Suri Competiton and the Schubert Lied Competition in her native South Korea, where she received her bachelor’s degree at Ewha Woman’s University. She earned her master’s degree and Professional Studies Diploma from Mannes College of Music. During her time as a member of the Mannes Opera, she performed many roles under Maestro Joseph Colaneri, including Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte, Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro and Annina in Verdi’s La Traviata.

Kim has performed at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and Jazz at Lincoln Center, and she participated in The Song Continues 2013: Master Class with Jessye Norman at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall. She has appeared in master classes before such esteemed artists as Dalton Baldwin, Evelyn Lear, Mignon Dunn and Marilyn Horne.

Her opera roles include Hermia in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Israel’s International Vocal Arts Institute, Suzuki in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly with Opera Lancaster and Opera Company of Middlebury, Dame Quickly in Verdi’s Falstaff with the Martina Arroyo Foundation, and Berta in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Yewool Opera in South Korea.

She also recently made her Houston Grand Opera debut to originate the role of Hal-MoNi (grandmother) in Jeeyoung Kim’s From My Mother’s Mother.

ANDREW STENSON, tenor During the 2013/14 season, tenor Andrew Stenson continues as a member of the

Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. His assignments in that house include Demetrius in The Enchanted Island.

Elsewhere during the season, he makes a return to Seattle Opera as Tonio in La fille du régiment, and he makes his role debut as Belmonte in Die entführung aus dem Serail with Utah Opera.

Additionally, he appears on the concert stage with the Seattle Symphony in Handel’s Messiah.

Future seasons include appearances with the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago and The Glimmerglass Festival.

The summer of 2012 found Stenson with San Francisco Opera’s Merola Program for Argento’s Postcard from Morocco. During the 2012/13 season, he joined the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program; his assignments included Esquire No. 3 in the company’s new production of Parsifal. The season also found him making debuts with the San Francisco Symphony for Handel’s Messiah, and with the Glyndebourne Festival Opera as Brighella in a new production of Ariadne auf Naxos.

Stenson began the 2011/12 season with Seattle Opera as Le Remendado in the mainstage production of Carmen, and later made his role debut as Orphée in Orphée et Euridice.

In the 2013/14 season, Cha will be heard at the Metropolitan Opera as Yamadori in Madama Butterfly, and as second Watchman in Die Frau ohne Schatten.

VINCE GILL One of the most popular and most recorded singers of the past quarter-century, Vince Gill has become the measure of excellence in country music. His vocal performances are spellbinding, his songwriting emotionally powerful and his guitar playing world-class.

Gill achieved his big breakthrough with “When I Call Your Name,” which won the Country Music Association’s Single of the Year award.

Since then, he has won 17 more CMA honors, including Song of the Year four times — making him the most awarded artist in that category in

CMA history. The Academy of Country Music has handed Gill eight awards. Since 1990, he has received 20 GRAMMY® Awards and has sold more than 26 million albums.

Gill was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007. He is also a member of the Grand Ole Opry. In August 2012, he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He is a member of the four-time GRAMMY®-nominated band The Time Jumpers.

Vincent Grant Gill was born April 12, 1957, in Norman, Oklahoma, and raised in Oklahoma City. His parents encouraged him to learn guitar and banjo, which he did, eventually adding bass, mandolin, Dobro and fiddle to his instrumental array. Gill’s high, pure tenor voice and unerring sense of harmony have caused dozens of artists to embrace him as a duet partner. In addition to his passion for music, Gill donates a great deal of his time supporting numerous charitable organizations.

AMY GRANT Amy Grant has built a long, successful career on music that matters. Ever since she burst on the scene as a fresh-faced teenager bringing contemporary Christian music to the forefront of American culture, the Nashville native has gained a reputation for creating potent songs that examine life’s complexities with an open heart and keen eye. She became the first artist in Christian music to have a platinum record and went on to become a crossover sensation.

She’s earned six GRAMMY® Awards and numerous Gospel Music Association Dove Awards, as well as three multi-Platinum albums, six Platinum albums and four Gold albums. She’s achieved 10 Top 40 pop singles and placed 17 hits on the Top 40 Adult Contemporary chart, as well as scoring numerous hits on the contemporary Christian charts. A longtime and active Nashville resident, Grant is as well known for her philanthropy as her music.

Giancarlo Guerrero

G

iancarlo Guerrero is the Music Director of the Nashville Symphony and concurrently holds the position of Principal Guest Conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency.

His recordings with Nashville Symphony won GRAMMY® Awards in 2011 and 2012, including Best Orchestral Performance. A fervent advocate of contemporary music and composers, Guerrero has championed works by several of America’s most respected composers, including John Adams, John Corigliano, Osvaldo Golijov, Jennifer Higdon, Michael Daugherty, Roberto Sierra and Richard Danielpour.

In the 2013/14 season, Guerrero will make several European debuts, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse, Frankfurt Radio Symphony and Copenhagen Philharmonic. In North America, he takes The Cleveland Orchestra on tour and returns to the symphony orchestras of Cincinnati and Detroit. For many years he has maintained a close association with the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra in Brazil, as well as with the Simón

In recent seasons Guerrero has established himself with many of the major North American orchestras, including the symphony orchestras of Boston, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Toronto and Vancouver, among others. He is also known to audiences of large summer festivals including the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and Blossom Music Festival in Cleveland. He is also cultivating an increasingly visible profile in Europe, where his recent debuts included BBC Symphony Orchestra and Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin.

A native of Costa Rica, Guerrero gained early experience with the Costa Rican Lyric Opera and later spent time in Venezuela as Music Director of the Táchira Symphony Orchestra. Upon moving to the U.S., he studied conducting and percussion at Baylor and Northwestern universities. He served as Associate Conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra from 1999-2004 and was Music Director of the Eugene Symphony in Oregon from 2002-09.

Kelly Corcoran

T

he 2013/14 season marks Associate Conductor Kelly Corcoran’s seventh season with the Nashville Symphony. During this time, she has conducted a variety of programs and has served as the primary conductor for the orchestra’s education and community engagement concerts. She also conducted the Nashville Symphony’s CD with Riders In The Sky, ‘Lassoed Live’ at the Schermerhorn, and made her Carnegie Hall conducting debut in May 2012 with the Nashville Symphony during the Spring For Music Festival. In May 2013, Corcoran was named director of the Nashville Symphony Chorus.

This season, Corcoran has return guestconducting engagements with The Cleveland Orchestra and the Naples Philharmonic, as well as a debut with the Charleston Symphony. She has conducted major orchestras throughout the country, including performances with the Atlanta, Detroit, Houston, Milwaukee and National Symphonies, often with return engagements. In 2009, she made her South American debut as a guest conductor with the Orquesta Sinfónica UNCuyo in Mendoza,

Argentina, and returned for multiple programs in 2011. Corcoran has developed a reputation for exciting, energized performances. Critic Tim Page of the Washington Post hailed her conducting as “sure and sensitive.”

Named as Honorable Mention for the Taki Concordia Conducting Fellowship, Corcoran studied with Marin Alsop. Prior to her position in Nashville, she completed three seasons as assistant conductor for the Canton Symphony Orchestra in Ohio and music director of the Canton Youth Symphony and the Cleveland-area Heights Chamber Orchestra.

In 2004, Corcoran participated in the National Conducting Institute, where she studied with Leonard Slatkin. Originally from Massachusetts and a member of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus for more than 10 years, she received her Bachelor of Music in vocal performance from The Boston Conservatory and her Master of Music in instrumental conducting from Indiana University. She currently serves on the conducting faculty at the New York Summer Music Festival.

VISTING THE SCHERMERHORN COAT cHECK

Guests are invited to check their coats at one of several complimentary coat check locations on each seating level. The most convenient is on the Lounge Level, located one floor below the Main Lobby.

CAMERAS, CELL PHONES & OTHER DEVICES

Videocameras and recording devices are strictly prohibited in the concert hall or in any other space where a performance or rehearsal is taking place, but photographs are permitted anytime the house lights are illuminated. Cellular phones, beepers and watch alarms should be turned off once the performance starts.

LATE SEATING

As a courtesy to performers and audience, each performance will have designated breaks when latecomers are seated. Those arriving after a performance begins will be asked to wait until the appropriate break to be seated.

SERVICES FOR GUESTS WITH DISABILITIES

Schermerhorn Symphony Center meets or exceeds all criteria established by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Interior signage and all elevators make use of Braille lettering. An infrared hearing system is available for guests who are hearing impaired; headsets may be retrieved from

the Lounge Level coat-check area and from the Concert Concierge. Unisex restrooms are available on the Lounge Level for disabled guests needing special assistance.

Accessible and companion seating are available at all seating and price levels. Transfer seating is also available to allow guests in wheelchairs to transfer easily to seats in the hall. Please arrange in advance for accessible seating by calling a customer service representative at 615.687.6400.

EMERGENCY MESSAGES

Guests expecting urgent calls may leave their name and seat information (seating level, door number, row and seat number) with any usher. Anyone needing to reach guests during an event may call the Security Desk at 615.687.6610.
