PREFACE The Boies Penrose II Decorated Manuscript (1490-1520) is one of approximately 50 rare volumes in the Underwood Prayer Book Collection at Nashotah House Theological Seminary in Waukesha County, Wisconsin. A former Chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago and senior partner in the Chicago law firm of McLease, Spray, Price & Underwood, Walter S. Underwood (1884-1976) gave this volume to Nashotah House in 1977 along with the rest of his liturgical book collection. The manuscript is named after the former owner from whose estate Mr. Underwood obtained the manuscript.

Ornamented throughout, the manuscript is formed of 310 leaves on vellum with Latin text and contains two bookplates—those of Boies Penrose II and of Thomas Phillips of Ickford in the County of Buckinghamshire, England. The volume was included in the museum exhibition: “Hidden Treasures: Illuminated Manuscripts from Midwestern Collections” (the Chazen Museum of Art at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, December 18, 2010-February 27, 2011).

Boies Penrose II (1902-1976) was a noted Philadelphia collector, writer and lecturer, and a nephew of U.S. Senator Boies Penrose (1860-1921). Throughout his life, Boies Penrose II had the means to pursue his own scholarly interests, serving on the boards of the Athenaeum of Philadelphia, the Library Company of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Zoological Society, and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (president 19611974.)
