Nashoba Brooks School educates children for a life of continuous learning, accomplishment, and leadership in a diverse and changing world. The School nurtures students’ growth and character, while fostering the development of each child’s personal excellence in academics, athletics, and the arts.

DEAR MEMBERS OF THE NASHOBA BROOKS SCHOOL COMMUNITY, If we had to choose just one word to describe 2022-2023, momentum would undoubtedly be high on the list of options. Following several years of scenario planning and crisis response, we welcomed a return to a more “typical” approach to the academic year. Though protocols and scenarios were at the ready, we were pleased to have them take a backseat to curriculum enhancement, professional development, and face-to-face community connections. These opportunities fueled energy, inspiration, and momentum schoolwide.

Nashoba Brooks students, employees, and curriculum earned regional, national, and international recognition. Employees immersed themselves in professional development—in individual and shared learning experiences. We expanded occupational therapy and speech and language services on campus, established new partnerships bringing a record number of children to campus this summer, launched free Wonders and Girls’ Time To Shine series to welcome the broader community to campus, and reached new levels of attendance and enthusiasm in our second season of the the Summer Family Concert Series. All aspects of our School are supported by the Nashoba Brooks Fund, which covers roughly 9% of our operating budget including curriculum resources, professional development, student support services, field trips, and more.

We completed year 3 of 3 in our reVision Tuition initiative to support our mission and make a Nashoba Brooks education more accessible and affordable. Grounded in our strategic directions launched in 2014, these commitments to creating exceptional programs to meet the needs of our students, families, and community have grown even more poignant in the current unpredictable economic context. And, as we enter year 10 of 10 in our Strategic Directions, we also begin to consider what bold, new vision we may consider in the decade ahead. While our commitment to innovation remains strong, our core remains constant: Nashoba Brooks School has been—and always will be—focused on our students, guided by our core values, and steadfast in our dedication to our mission.

The arrival of a new academic year brings renewed excitement, energy, optimism, and focus. We are enjoying the summer enhancements to our Middle School classrooms and our campus as some of the recent developments as part of The Campaign for Our Future. As we enter the final stages of the Campaign, we are very pleased to have secured commitments for more than $8M in cash and pledges, which has made it possible to complete the construction of the flex classrooms, Shilling STEAM Lab, the Sureau Family Discovery Barn, and the Denault Library Courtyard. The final phase will focus on Commitment to Our Core— our mission; our core values; the equal balance of focus on academics, athletics, and the arts; and care for the whole child’s wellbeing—academically, socially, and emotionally.

Your continued partnership and philanthropic support make Nashoba Brooks a truly exceptional learning community and a transformational experience for children. DEAR MEMBERS OF THE NASHOBA BROOKS SCHOOL COMMUNITY, While the economic environment remains unpredictable, Nashoba Brooks School’s commitment to building and maintaining a responsible, predictable, and sustainable financial model remains steadfast.

As a tuition driven independent school, Nashoba Brooks’ tuition remains our largest source of revenue by far, with tuition dollars accounting for 79% of revenue. Announced in January of 2023, the 2023-2024 academic year is the third of three consecutive years of 5% average tuition reduction in alignment with our Strategic Directions and our commitment to our mission through our long-term reVision Tuition initiative.

Bolstering this initiative, enrollment has grown steadily at a rate of approximately 12 students for each of the last two years, and high demand for our Preschool program has resulted in expansion of these early grade levels, creating a robust pipeline for future growth.

In addition to enrollment growth, external programs and philanthropic support remain essential components of the School’s financial model. In FY23, Nashoba Brooks has fostered new and existing partnerships to ensure that the School facilities are consistently fully utilized during and outside of school hours, raising more than $100K in revenue annually. By hosting local community events on campus, Nashoba Brooks has become recognized as a go-to location for professional development, community events, and special celebrations. Finally, philanthropic support has provided more than $800,000 toward the Nashoba Brooks Fund and more than $8M in cash and pledges to support capital projects through The Campaign for Our Future.

On the expense side of the equation, our greatest investments are in our people, with 68% of resources allocated to employee compensation and 13% to financial assistance. Though there has been some volatility in the market, Nashoba Brooks School’s $13M endowment continues to perform well with a 10-year average year-end performance of 8% overall. The 5% draw from the endowment provides an important source of revenue from this enduring investment in the School’s future.

With a commitment to both near- and long-term fiscal strength, Nashoba Brooks continues to invest in value, manage expenses responsibly, and deliver on the promise of an outstanding educational experience for students. TRU S TEE EMER ITU S Alice Flint Parent of Alumni Current Grandparent

Alice Flint has taught at the elementary school level and has practiced social work at a family service agency.

At Nashoba Brooks, Alice was a president of the Parents’ Association and served as a trustee from 1999-2005 and again from 2006-2012. During her tenure as a trustee, she served on eight different committees, chairing both the Diversity and Education Committees. Most recently Alice served as Chair of the Head of School Search Committee. She also led the Expanding Boundaries Campaign and chaired the Board of Visitors Committee. Alice also serves on the Board at Our Sisters’ School in New Bedford, a school which educates economically disadvantaged middle school girls. At Our Sisters’ School, she is an active member of the Advancement Committee and chaired the search for the current Director of Advancement.

Alice received a B.A. from the University of Virginia, a master’s in education from Bank Street College, and a master’s of social work from Simmons College School of Social Work.

W. Carl Kester Parent of Alumni Current Grandparent

Carl Kester is a Baker Foundation Professor and the George Fisher Baker Jr. Professor of Business Administration, Emeritus at Harvard Business School where he is a member of the Finance Unit. He served as Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs (2006-2010), Chairman of the Finance Unit (2005-2006), and Senior Associate Dean and Chairman of the MBA Program (1999 to 2005). He teaches corporate finance in both the School’s MBA and Executive Education programs. Professor Kester is a four-time recipient of The Robert F. Greenhill Award for outstanding service to Harvard Business School.

Professor Kester is Chairman of the BlackRock Capital Investment Advisors Mutual Funds Complex, which oversees private credit and private equity mutual funds. He is also Vice Chairman of the BlackRock Fixed Income Mutual Funds Complex. He is past Chair and currently Vice Chair and Governor of the Board of Governors of the Handel and Haydn Society, a Boston-based musical society featuring an internationally recognized chorus and period instrument orchestra playing historically informed baroque and classical music. He also served as a trustee (1988-2002), and as President of the Board of Trustees (1999-2002), of the Nashoba Brooks School.

An economics graduate of Amherst College, Professor Kester also holds advanced degrees from Harvard Business School (MBA), and the London School of Economics and Political Science (M.Sc.). He received his Ph.D. in Business Economics from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

John Moriarty Parent of Alumni Current Grandparent

John is the Founder and President of John Moriarty & Associates, Inc., a building and real estate company. John has guided the construction management firm since 1985. JMA has offices in MA, Northern VA, Durham NC, and Hollywood FL. As a Nashoba Brooks Trustee from 1997-2003 and 2008-2013, John served as Treasurer and Chair of the Buildings and Grounds Committee. John’s expertise in building and real estate were instrumental in helping Nashoba Brooks to successfully complete several important school construction projects including the 2002 build, the 2009 Noble Field and Tennis Court projects, the 2012 Lower School addition and Middle School renovations, and the 2020 addition of the Sureau Family Discovery Barn. John is a Life trustee at Concord Academy and has served as a trustee at Belmont Day School. John is also on the Board of Directors at the Winchester Co-Operative Bank.

He is the parent of Kate ‘98, Claire ‘01, and BJ TG’98. John’s grandson Jack is a member of the class of TG‘28.

John is a graduate of Phillips Academy, Andover, and has a bachelor of arts degree in demography from Johns Hopkins University.

Jason Robart Parent of Alumni

Jason Robart is the co-founder and managing partner of Seae Ventures, an early-stage venture capital firm focused on supporting women and BIPOC healthcare and fintech entrepreneurs. He works with both strategic and financial investors looking to leverage the intersection of strategy, innovation, and venture to further their competitive position and bring fundamental change to the healthcare system. He also partners closely with Seae’s portfolio company CEOs and management teams to help them develop comprehensive go-to-market and human capital strategies. He currently sits on the Boards of several Seae’s portfolio companies including Hurdle, Kiyatec, Moving Analytics and MyMeds.

Jason serves on the boards of SiriusPoint LTD (NYSE: SPNT), Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont, the Middlesex School, and Eastview@Middlebury, a retirement community in Middlebury Vermont. At Nashoba Brooks School, Jason served on the Board of Trustees from 2009-2020 and served as President from 20142020.

Prior to Seae, Jason served as the Chief Strategy Officer of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, and as the President and CEO of Zaffre Investments, a wholly owned subsidiary of BCBSMA. He began his career at BCBSMA as the Chief Human Resources Officer where he led a complete overhaul of the insurer’s human capital strategies to better align them with the changing dynamics of the Massachusetts healthcare landscape. Jason also served as BCBSMA’s National Account Segment leader where he delivered impressive growth in an increasingly competitive market.

Jason holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Middlebury College.

B OAR D OF VISITOR S CHAIR TR ANSITION We are pleased to welcome Greg Pappas as our next chair of the Board of Visitors. We are fortunate to move from strength to strength, as Greg follows the outstanding years of leadership under Carl Kester. Both Carl and Greg have helped to significantly advance the vision for our School in their time on the Board of Trustees and Board of Visitors.

Prior to his outstanding work as chair of the Board of Visitors from 2019-2023, Carl served as a trustee (19882002) and as president of the Board of Trustees (1999-2002) of Nashoba Brooks School. Carl’s inspiration and infinite wisdom helped to guide the school through several historic moments including a head of school transition, the creation of a long-range plan, two capital campaigns, as well as several expansions and renovations to the School’s facilities. As president of the Board of Visitors, Carl saw the School navigate a pandemic, extended his term for an additional year, and provided important historical perspective on strategic decisions. We are deeply grateful for his ongoing dedication to Nashoba Brooks, and we are thrilled that he will continue as a member of the Board of Visitors and a trustee emeritus in the years ahead.

Carl’s work has set a terrific foundation on which we will continue to build.

Greg served on the Nashoba Brooks Board of Trustees from 2012-2018 and was a valuable member of the investment, human resources, governance, and development committees. He co-chaired the School’s strategic planning process to frame the Strategic Directions that guide our work today. Greg is a managing director at Berkshire Partners where he is responsible for overseeing the firm’s portfolio support activities.

He has served on a number of Berkshire Partners portfolio company boards. Prior to Berkshire, Greg was a senior partner at The Parthenon Group where he managed its private equity practice, served as chair of the business development committee, and was a member of the firm’s executive committee. Greg’s wisdom, experience, and care for Nashoba Brooks will be great assets to our work with the Board of Visitors.

We thank Carl for his years of service and for providing much of the groundwork on which we continue to build and grow. Under Greg’s leadership, we look forward to advancing our committment to increasing alumni and volunteer engagement, preparing for our next round of strategic visioning, and growing strong financial underpinnings for the future of our School.

When Janet Benvenuti and her husband, Ray, first moved to Concord, they planned to send their children to the local public schools. When Janet dug into the research surrounding the benefits of single-gender education during the middle school years, she decided to make a change. In 1997, Janet enrolled her children, Eric TG’00 and Katie ‘08, in Nashoba Brooks School. Over the course of the next ten years, Eric and Katie experienced a holistic learning experience. Each day, they engaged in art, music, theater, sports and service for their community.

Janet notes, “They were encouraged to stay curious about the world around them—people, places, nature—and to accept responsibility for themselves and others.” Critical to Janet’s decision for her family to be a part of the School community was the culture of affirmation and wholesome values.

Over the last 25 years, Janet has consistently made Nashoba Brooks a philanthropic priority.

With a focus on endowed giving, she has played an integral role in the financial foundation and strength of the School. Janet considers giving in this way similar to placing money into a 401K or IRA. She donates dollars each year and those dollars are invested into the endowed funds from which the School is able to draw 4-5% each year to support its operating costs. Janet explains, “I give to endowment because I invest in people.”

In 2006, Janet and her husband created the faculty development fund to ensure that teachers have what they need to continue their own lifelong learning and bring their enriched experiences into the classroom. The same year, they created the service learning fund to ensure that each student at Nashoba Brooks develops an understanding of privilege and the value in working toward dismantling structural inequity and serving others. When asked why Janet continues to invest in the educational experience at Nashoba Brooks School, she put it simply—“Why wouldn’t I?” Janet’s vision and dogged commitment over 25 years ensures the Nashoba Brooks experience for students today and for generations to come.

“PAY I T F O R WAR D AN D S HAR E A BIG T HAN K YO U ” In 2007, Janet and Steven Correia realized the benefits that the personalized attention of an independent school environment could offer when their son enrolled at a local all-boys school. The positive experience they were having got them thinking about what might be possible for their 3-year-old, Adrienne, ‘18.

From the first time they set foot on the Nashoba Brooks School campus, the Correias felt the warmth and welcome of our School community and knew it was the right fit for their family.

Janet quickly saw the impact of the Nashoba Brooks experience in little ways, like how young Adrienne displayed her newly acquired independent problem-solving skills at the Book Fair. She saw her daughter become more confident, articulate, and willing to work collaboratively at a very young age. As the years passed, Janet watched Adrienne and her classmates grow into great listeners, engaged learners, and young women of strong character. It was the impact of these deeply rooted values playing out in Adrienne that confirmed Janet’s desire to take on a larger role within our School and made it easy to answer with a resounding, “Yes!” when asked to join the Board of Trustees at Nashoba Brooks. She valued her time working with the Board and, in particular, Head of School Danielle Heard’s consistent charge of the group to be generative thinkers—coming up with broad, innovative tactics to solve strategic problems that would impact the school for years to come.

Janet‘s investment in Nashoba Brooks School has come in many forms. Her ongoing commitment and thought partnership have made her a consistent and respected voice in our community. Equally importantly, her philanthropic contributions to the Nashoba Brooks Fund for the last 18 consecutive years have lent financial strength and predictability to our School. She has continued to prioritize her financial support to the Nashoba Brooks Fund long after her child was done sitting in a classroom on Strawberry Hill Road because she understands that tuition alone does not cover the operating costs of a Nashoba Brooks education. Further, she recognizes that without the additional support of the Fund, the experiences Adrienne and all Nashoba Brooks students enjoy would not have been as robust. Janet sees these contributions as a way to “pay it forward and share a big thank you” for the impact the School had on her daughter and to ensure the work continues for the next generation of students.

I N 2 018, NA S H O B A BR O OK S S CHO OL L AUN C H ED THE C AM PAIGN F OR OUR F U T UR E to bring our vision for the future of the School to life. Our goal is to reimagine our existing spaces so they reflect and enhance the spirit, creativity, and curiosity of our students and teachers. Phases 1 and 2 are complete, after securing approximately $6 million to fund these capital projects. An additional $2 million has been raised toward our Phase 3, with an additional $2 million needed to meet the goal of finishing the Campaign in 2024.

Driven by our mission and focused on our students, we have revitalized the Middle School and library, and will renovate the arts platform. Through the arts, our students develop confidence and a deeper understanding of themselves. They practice collaboration, push their comfort zones, and exercise leadership skills. We need to transform and elevate the spaces where our students create, perform, and find their voice.

While beloved, Tucker Auditorium is limited as it does not currently provide the space, flexibility, or technology necessary to showcase our thriving performing arts program. The reimagined arts platform will include:

• Visual art and music studio renovations to increase studio, prep, and storage spaces and provide flexibility and deeper exploration of a variety of activities and media.

• Tucker Auditorium renovations will transform the current space by increasing seating flexibility, modernizing light and sound, and providing flexibility for enhanced and efficient use of space.

• Acoustic enhancements of Moriarity Gymnasium will improve the sound quality for larger gatherings such as graduation.

The addition of the Shilling STEAM Lab was a brilliant redesign of underutilized space. The STEAM Lab has created forward-thinking learning zones for the entire school community to actualize their ideas, problem solve collaboratively, and practice flexible and creative thinking. It includes a fabrication lab featuring a laser cutter and 3-D Printer, a green screen studio, and provides opportunities for prototyping, robotics, coding, filming, and engineering.

Kiki and Drew Shilling were instrumental in bringing the bold vision of the STEAM Lab to life.

Drew captured the significance of the STEAM Lab for the Shilling family, as education in science, The Shilling Family technology, and engineering become more and more important. When he noted that “there will be kids whose paths through life will be transformed by the experiences they have at an early age, and that is what this project will allow.”

The renovation of the Denault Library Courtyard brought new life to one of the most beloved spaces on campus. The extension of the library to the courtyard provides amphitheater seating for outdoor learning and gathering, cozy nooks for students to curl up with a book, and hardscape and landscape features that enhance the library’s connection to the outdoors.

This story actually begins more than 40 years ago when Dorothy Denault helped create a library on campus. For Dorothy, building the library was as much about creating a quiet, reflective, communal The Denault Family space where students could enjoy reading together as it was to house the School’s collection of books. The Denault family has stewarded the library through capital giving and the Dorothy and Elliot Denault Library Fund, an endowed fund dedicated to maintaining the library and its collections that has grown steadily over more than 20 years.

The Sureau Family Discovery Barn is a launchpad to our outdoor learning environment and provides additional performance and event space for up to 150 guests. The Sureau family—Adam and Melanie Sureau, parents of Alexander TG’20 and Sophie ’28, and grandparents Carole and Jean-Claude Sureau—gave a multi-generational gift that was instrumental in realizing the vision for the Discovery Barn. Adam notes “our kids love school and we know their experiences at Nashoba Brooks have helped make them more thoughtful, caring people. ” The Sureau family hopes the naming will encourage and inspire other multigenerational gifts to the School’s campaign. “We are a very close knit family; it makes sense that we would make this gift together,” remarks Carole Sureau.

The Discovery Barn’s design celebrates the natural environment through its use of natural light, outdoor learning spaces, and sustainable, green design; all elements that were important to the Sureaus. With direct connection to the School’s outdoor learning environment and the Merry Long Garden, the Barn enhances students’ skill development as stewards of the natural world.
