PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The 2021-2022 Annual Community Report finds me in the third year as president of this incredible institution. If you do the math, that means I arrived shortly before the onset of a worldwide pandemic. To say that has made my presidency interesting would definitely be an understatement. I can honestly say, though, that I would not have wanted to be anywhere else. Leading Team Nash, the 430+ people who work here, continues to be my honor and good fortune. I can say that I am looking forward to what I hope will be a more normal presidency moving forward.

Nash Community College has weathered the pandemic very well, thanks to the dedication of the Board of Trustees, Faculty, Staff, and as importantly, our students. We have suffered enrollment loss as have many of our sister colleges across the country, but we are coming back strong and will continue to be the rock of Eastern North Carolina for decades to come.

We take great pride in our impact on Nash County. This academic year, we have served 13,925 students on our three areas of study: Curriculum (college transfer & career and technical education), Continuing Education, and Adult Basic Education. From an economic standpoint, the college recently completed an impact survey thanks to funding from the Belk Foundation.

The results showed an annual economic impact in Nash County of $86,000,000 (22 million direct, and 64 million attributed to the college being here since 1967). This value represents a 30 to 1 return on funding investment for Nash County, and a 3 to 1 return on funding for the state of North Carolina. While numbers like those above are impressive, the most impressive to me is that 1 out of every 38 jobs in our county has been touched by the college. Taken together, Nash Community College has a truly significant impact on many levels, not only on Nash County, but on the entire region surrounding the county.

One of the best signs of things getting a bit more back to normal was our end of the year graduation ceremonies. While we offered drive through graduation ceremonies in both of the last two years, this spring we were able to also offer the first indoor formal graduation ceremony of my presidency. We kept the drive through event as an option and many chose it, but the bulk of students chose to walk across our stage to receive their degree, diploma, and/or certificate.

While all events have been well received and attended, I have to admit, this first formal indoor event of my time here was, well, incredibly awesome. Our culture of Blue Love surrounds our students no matter what type of ceremony they participate in, and all of Team Nash is very proud of what our students accomplish. We have the best of all jobs in that we get to empower students every day to literally change their lives. The best part of being a president is seeing that glimmer of hope enter a student’s eyes, and watch it become a spark and then an inferno of accomplishment by the time they complete their program of study.

To sum up the 2021-2022 academic year I can use one word...RESILIENCY! Our faculty, staff, and students have demonstrated, and continue to demonstrate, true and incredible resiliency. All have overcome so many obstacles since the onset of the pandemic, and have done so with incredible strength of spirit and grace.

All of us are looking forward to the next academic year, and the many after that. We wish everyone reading this annual report to know that we always stand ready to help at any time! We are Nash County’s Community College, and as we are fond of saying at Nash Community College...Nighthawks Forward!!

BOARD CHAIR’S MESSAGE It has been an interesting year for all as the world returned to work and school following the Pandemic. Becoming acclimated to the real world again has proven to be difficult for many; however, Nash Community College has not only persevered but has thrived.

Nash Community College’s graduates become our community’s manufacturing, healthcare, public safety, hospitality, and small business professionals, as well as serve our community in a variety of other ways.

By living and working in the Twin Counties, these highly trained and specialized employees contribute significantly to the local economic development and quality of life we enjoy.

Having served on the Board of Trustees for many years, I have witnessed the impact NCC has on the regional workforce. This impact continues to grow in leaps and bounds. I am proud to be part of the governing body of an institution that serves the needs of our community with distinction.

Since 1967, NCC has grown strategically in its programs, student enrollment, and campus facilities in order to meet the developing needs of the community. The Board continues its commitment to guiding the college and securing the resources for programs and services to support NCC’s mission.

We are fortunate to live in a community that appreciates the importance of the community college and supports its growth. The value NCC alumni have provided to the economic prosperity and the betterment of our community will be realized for generations.

NAMING CEREMONY HELD FOR GENE HAAS CENTER FOR ADVANCED MANUFACTURING Nash Community College held a ceremony on Friday, September 17, 2021 celebrating the naming of the Gene Haas Center for Advanced Manufacturing.

The 16,000 square foot facility, which opened in 2018, is used as an academic and training space for students and is home to the Electrical Systems Technology, Computer-Integrated Machining, Electronics Engineering Technology, and Robotics programs of study.

The Gene Haas Foundation has provided a $250,000 naming rights gift that will be used to support the Advanced Manufacturing program. The perpetual naming rights award will fund much-needed classroom technology and supportive information technology.

“Nash Community College is very proud to be a leader in advanced manufacturing training preparing employable students to be successful in local careers,” NCC President Dr. Lew Hunnicutt said. “We are fortunate to have the continued endorsement and support of the Haas Foundation that has strengthened our program for many years. It speaks to the reputation and superior level of instruction we provide.”

In 2014 the Gene Haas Foundation established a new partnership with dynamic Computer Numerical Control (CNC) training programs around the world to provide the opportunity for qualifying schools to become Gene Haas Centers. Candidate schools are chosen based on a variety of factors including leadership within the technical education community, providing the maximum opportunities to many students and companies in their region and beyond.

“It has been such a pleasure working with the team at Nash Community College on their new Gene Haas Center for Advanced Manufacturing,” Kathy Looman, Director of Education for the Gene Haas Foundation said. “I have held the CNC training program at Nash Community College in very high regard for many years. The instructors are not only highly skilled but they are also willing to share their knowledge and expertise to expand their impact far beyond North Carolina.”

The Gene Haas Foundation was founded in 1999 by Gene Haas, owner of Haas Automation, Inc., America’s leading builder of CNC machine tools. Haas Automation, Inc. began in 1983 as a manufacturer of economical and reliable machine tools.

VICE PRESIDENT JOINS SENIOR LEADERSHIP James “Jay” Sullivan was named Vice President of Instruction and Chief Academic Officer at Nash Community College. He began his new role on the senior leadership team in January 2022.

A native of eastern North Carolina, Sullivan served as Vice President of Academic Affairs at Beaufort County Community College. In his position, he provided leadership for academic programs and oversight for degree programs, library services, distance learning, faculty professional development, dual enrollment programs and institutional effectiveness.

Sullivan previously held positions as Vice President of Student Services, Vice President of Research and Institutional Effectiveness and Department Chair. He also served as faculty within the NC Community College System and at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Sullivan earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Physics and Mathematics at North Carolina State University. After receiving his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Theoretical Physics from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, he spent five years at Naval Research Lab within the Center for Computational Materials Science and the Chemistry Division working on diverse projects ranging from magnetic semiconductors to DNA-functionalized surfaces.

Nearly two decades of experience in higher education reflect Sullivan’s deeply held belief that every individual has value. Committed to being a part of each person’s story, he cites his favorite collegiate event as commencement and being able to celebrate alongside new graduates.

Jay Sullivan lives in Bath, NC with his wife and children.

NCC EARNS 2022-2023 MILITARY FRIENDLY® SCHOOL DESIGNATION Nash Community College has earned the 2022-2023 Military Friendly® School designation. Institutions earning the designation were evaluated using public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. More than 1,800 schools participated in the 2022-2023 survey with 665 earning special awards for going above the standard.

The 2022-2023 Military Friendly® Schools list will can be found at www.militaryfriendly. com. Methodology, criteria, and weightings were determined by Viqtory with input from the Military Friendly® Advisory Council of independent leaders in the higher education and military recruitment community. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution’s survey scores with the assessment of the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence (degree advancement or transfer) and loan default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans.

“Military Friendly® is committed to transparency and providing consistent data-driven standards in our designation process,” Kayla Lopez, National Director of Military Partnerships, Military Friendly® said. “Our standards provide a benchmark promoting positive outcomes and support services that better the educational landscape and provide opportunities for the military community. This creates a competitive atmosphere that encourages colleges to evolve and invest in their programs consistently. Schools who achieve awards designation show true commitment in their efforts, going over and above that standard.”

DR. J. ALLEN WHITAKER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWED The Dr. J. Allen Whitaker Memorial Scholarship was established in 2018 by George Whitaker to honor the memory of his father, a medical doctor, who served as director of the Rocky Mount Health Department for many years.

Dr. Whitaker was born in Nash County. When he was one year old, his father, who was the Nash County Register of Deeds, passed away and he moved with his mother to Middlesex to be closer to her family. Years later, Dr. Whitaker and his mother relocated to Zebulon. Upon graduation from the University of North Carolina School of Public Health, he accepted a job in Mount Airy where he was Public Health Officer for Surry County. In 1935, Dr. Whitaker accepted the position as Nash County Public Health Officer and relocated to Rocky Mount to be near his mother who resided in Zebulon and to be near to the family farm. During the 1940s, Dr. Whitaker completed his residency at Presbyterian Hospital, affiliated with Columbia University in New York City. Thereafter, he practiced Urology in Rocky Mount at the Rocky Mount Sanitarium Hospital and Nash General Hospital until his retirement.

Dr. Bill Hill, Nash County Health Director, recalls working with Whitaker. “He was a true pioneer of public health in North Carolina. His devotion was exemplary as a visionary developing ways to improve the healthcare of the community.”

The Great Depression had a remarkable impact on Dr. Whitaker’s career in medicine with the prevalence of malnutrition, communicable disease and infant mortality. He took an active role in improving the lives of his neighbors with the initiation of The Well Baby Clinic, a free medical service for mothers, infants and children. He also helped establish a sanatorium in Nashville, NC for tuberculosis patients who could not be seen at the state sanatorium and he implemented blood testing for local enlisted military members during World War II helping prevent the spread of communicable diseases.

“It is fitting that we remember his legacy and distinguished career and his interest in this area by supporting students in their pursuit of a career in public health in Nash County,” Hill said.

Dr. Whitaker passed away in 2006 at the age of 101.

COLLEGE JOINS LIST OF ADULT EDUCATION INNOVATORS The College and Career Readiness Program at Nash Community College is excited to announce that the High School Equivalency Honors Boot Camp has been named an innovative practice in adult education by the Advancing Innovation in Adult Education project.

Nash Community College’s High School Equivalency Honors Boot Camp is an intensive, 100-hour course delivered over a five-week period. It is designed to motivate adult learners to earn a high school equivalency diploma more quickly.

Students receive assistance from a transition coordinator who works with participants from the beginning of the course to help them apply to programs at Nash Community College and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for additional study following completion of the High School Equivalency.

Advancing Innovation is led by Manhattan Strategy Group, and is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education (OCTAE). Through the Advancing Innovation in Adult Education project, OCTAE is on a mission to highlight adult education providers who are helping to advance the field through creative approaches that ensure adult learners develop knowledge and skills, gain secondary credentials, and transition to further education and employment.

Nash Community College’s High School Equivalency Honors Boot Camp is one of nine practices selected nationally for innovative approaches modeling effective integrated education and training (IET) programs, transitioning adult learners from adult basic education to postsecondary education or training, and increasing access to adult education services.

LEGISLATORS VISIT CAMPUS Nash Community College welcomed Nash County’s full delegation for a campus tour on Friday, November 5, 2021, including Representatives James D. Gailliard and Matthew Winslow and Senator Lisa Barnes.

The leaders attended a breakfast with NCC Student Government Association officers, Student Ambassadors, members of the Board of Trustees and senior leadership.

Following introductions and an overview, NCC President Lew Hunnicutt led the group on a campus tour.

“We are grateful for the support and advocacy of these leaders on behalf of the NC Community College System, including Nash Community College,” President Hunnicutt stated. “We want to make sure they know and understand our college’s story and the unique impact our campus makes each day on the quality of life for citizens in Nash County and beyond.”

The delegates returned to campus on April 25, 2022 for Coffee & Conversation with community leaders.

STRICKLAND MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCED The Nash Community College Foundation has announced the David Brooks Strickland Memorial Scholarship has been established by the parents of David Strickland, Dr. Henry Howard “Hank” Strickland, Jr. and Rita Anne Barnett Strickland.

David Brooks Strickland passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2022 at the age of 40 years old. Strickland, of Rocky Mount, was a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill. He was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity and a die-hard Tarheels fan. For the past 12 years, Strickland served as an instructor in Nash Community College’s College and Career Readiness department.

David Strickland formed many friendships and bonds with his students that will forever live on as well as the impact he made on their success. He especially enjoyed visiting his family along the coast of South Carolina and cherished his nieces and nephew as though they were his own. A dedicated and loving son, brother, uncle, and friend, his memory will live on well into the future.

The scholarship was established as an endowment to assist students who are graduates of the NCC High School Equivalency program who wish to further their education at Nash Community College. In establishing the scholarship, the Strickland family stated, “David loved his work. He loved his students and was always so proud of the college.”

STUDY SHOWS SIGNIFICANT ECONOMIC IMPACT Nash Community College continues to make a significant impact on students, workforce development and as an economic engine in Nash County.

A recent study by Emsi found that in the fiscal year 2020, there was $86 million total added income in Nash County resulting from Nash Community College’s operational, student and alumni input.

Founded in 1967, the college’s mission is to provide an educational environment that meets students where they are and prepares them for successful and rewarding careers in a global and diverse society.

Nash Community College offers academic programs leading to a degree, diploma or certificate. Included are two-year technical and college transfer programs which provide students the knowledge and expertise required for challenging careers and successful transfer to four-year institutions. Vocational, occupational, business, and industry-related programs are offered which prepare students for jobs and provide a skilled workforce for the area.

Additionally, the college offers Adult Education, High School Equivalency and Adult High School to meet the diverse needs of the citizenry in Nash County and the surrounding area.

2022 OUTSTANDING ALUMNA Jammie Wacenske of Wendell has been named Nash Community College’s 2022 Outstanding Alumna. The award honors a member of the college’s alumni community annually in recognition of their contributions in their profession and community.

Since she was five years old, Wacenske knew she wanted to be a lawyer. After graduating from Nash Central High School, she enrolled at NCC. While attending NCC, she was nominated by administrators to participate in the North Carolina Community College System Student Leadership Institute, a week-long summer leadership training program for student leaders at community colleges. She was actively involved on campus holding leadership positions with Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society, the Media Club and the Math and Science Club.

“My experience at NCC made a great impression on me and the importance of my community involvement,” she said. “One of my most memorable experiences was when we went to nursing homes and spent time with the elderly who often did not have many visitors. These experiences shaped who I am today.”

Her NCC instructors remember her as an enthusiastic and conscientious student, hardworking and dedicated. Jammie’s advice for current students is, “Don’t give up when times seem difficult and the obstacles seem insurmountable. Keep going. I would not be where I am today if I had given in to seemingly impossible odds,” she said.

ZIPF FAMILY ESTABLISHES NEW ENDOWMENT Dr. and Mrs. Robert E. Zipf, Jr. established a new endowment at Nash Community College. The fund was established as a part of the Foundation’s efforts to increase strategic endowed giving.

The Dr. Robert E. Zipf, Jr. and Nancy G. Zipf Endowment for College Initiatives serves as a permanent legacy supporting discretionary funds for equipment and instructional needs at NCC. The couple promotes the merits of the college as ambassadors and through their philanthropy.

Dr. Zipf was appointed to the Nash Community College Board of Trustees by Governor Pat McCrory, serving from 2015 – 2019. He was appointed to the NCC Foundation Board of Directors in 2017 and continues to serve.

In 2005, the Zipfs established the Dr. Robert E. Zipf, Jr. and Nancy G. Zipf Scholarship to assist students in the pursuit of a career in a scientific field. Subsequently, they supported the NCC Legacy Campaign and named the Meriam Murr and Robert E. Zipf, Sr., M.D. Forensic Science Laboratory in the Continuing Education Building.

The Zipfs were named recipients of the NCC President’s cup in 2019, which is the college’s highest and most prestigious award and was given to the couple in recognition of their outstanding support and leadership that made an indelible mark on the college.

AWADALLAH WINS EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARD Nash Community College anatomy and physiology instructor Nahel Awadallah received the 2022 J. Edgar and Peggie T. Moore Excellence in Teaching Award.

The late Mr. and Mrs. J. Edgar Moore of Rocky Mount were longtime supporters of the college. As the award recipient, Awadallah receives the J. Edgar and Peggie T. Moore monetary award, a recognition plaque and an opportunity to attend the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development Conference in Austin, Texas. He will also represent the College for the NC Community College System statewide award and serve as faculty marshal in the College’s graduation ceremony.

The Excellence in Teaching Award nomination process began with three full-time curriculum faculty members being selected for consideration based on the results of evaluations by students for the 2021 academic year. These faculty members wrote a short essay and were allowed to select faculty to submit essays of support following peer observation.

Awadallah was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Jerusalem, Palestine. His education began in Florida and continued in New York. He holds a bachelor of science degree in molecular biology and a master of science degree in microbiology both from Long Island University. Prior to joining NCC in 2015, he taught at Johnston and Sampson community colleges and was a researcher at New York University School of Medicine.

“My teaching techniques are simple but effective,” Awadallah said. “I focus on clear communication, active listening, allowing students to freely express themselves, patience, adaptability and willingness to improve as an instructor.”

“Anatomy and physiology topics are difficult, detailed and complex,” he said. “The topics must be presented in a simple format reviewing the foundation and slowly adding the details. I use visuals, hands-on activities, audio and video animations, notes, writing activities and class discussions. All the while relating it to interesting medical scenarios to engage students of all learning styles of learning and simultaneously reinforcing the details.”

STAFF AWARD RECIPIENT NAMED Jamal Pitt received the 2022 J. Edgar and Peggie T. Moore Staff Award.

Pitt will represent NCC as a nominee for the 2022 North Carolina Community College System Staff Award.

At NCC, Jamal Pitt has served as a math lab assistant, campus safety intern, director of MALE mentoring, and an e-learning specialist. In 2021, he began in his current role as a success coach.

Pitt demonstrates a deep understanding of the Open Door philosophy of the North Carolina Community College System supporting the specialized needs of NCC students and especially those from underserved populations. In his role, he is committed to serving the whole student and every student, often networking with campus and community partners to ensure students have the resources they need to be successful.

Pitt has represented the College at the state and national levels with his engagement in a variety of presentations sharing best practices from the College’s use of student retention tools and his experiences with the Minority Male Success Initiative.

Jamal Pitt exemplifies student-centered service and creates community through his unselfish devotion to providing opportunities for minority male students including university tours, interview preparation, community service and exposure to minority role models. During the pandemic, he has continued to be a strong student advocate and a voice of support providing innovative opportunities to create a space for students to articulate and process their experiences and emotions.

Jamal Pitt earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology from North Carolina State University and a Certificate in IT/Cybersecurity from NCC. He began working at NCC in 2015.

The Staff Award is an annual award recognizing the outstanding work ethic of a non-instructional employee at NCC. J. Edgar and Peggie T. Moore of Rocky Mount established the NCC Staff Award in 2004 acknowledging the achievement of the recipient. The Moores were longtime friends of the college also providing support for the Excellence in Teaching Award. In 1998, they established the NCC J. Edgar and Peggie T. Moore Faculty Senate Scholarship and later funded the Peggie Thigpen Moore Endowed Chair for Culinary Arts in 2009 honoring NCC Culinary faculty. The Peggie T. Moore Culinary Arts Wing in the College’s Business and Industry Center honors Mr. and Mrs. Moore’s legacy.

MANSFIELD-MOORE ENDOWMENT ESTABLISHED The Nash Community College Foundation announced the establishment of the Mansfield-Moore Endowment for College Initiatives by Jeanne Moore of Nashville, NC. Ms. Moore established the endowment through a planned gift, facilitated by Steve Felton who serves on the NCC Foundation Board. The perpetual gift serves as a legacy to Carolyn Mansfield’s and Jeanne Moore’s dedication to supporting Nash Community College programming.

Their support began with the establishment of the Mansfield-Moore Veterans Scholarship in 2015 providing resources for students who are veterans and/or spouses or children of veterans with financial need. In addition, Mansfield and Moore have provided support to the college’s Blue Love Fund to assist students with needs beyond the scope of tuition.

The late Ms. Mansfield was a retired nutritionist from Nash General Hospital and was pleased to provide support to the Culinary Arts program. Through their gifts, the donors were instrumental in the construction of the Tuscan Patio, an outdoor kitchen and entertainment space adjacent to the Culinary Kitchen. Their contributions to the Culinary Arts program have also helped to underwrite major equipment purchases.

NCC SCHOLARSHIP ESTABLISHED IN MEMORY OF LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER The Nash Community College Foundation announced a memorial scholarship that provides support for the education of future law enforcement training officers. The Officer Chris “Batman” Driver Scholarship was established in 2022 to honor the memory of Officer Chris Driver who gave his life in the line of duty on June 23, 2018.

Officer Driver was a 2009 graduate of Rocky Mount High School where he was a football player and wrestler. He was a gifted vocalist who sang in the Edgemont Baptist Church Choir, as well as with the Rocky Mount Chorus.

A graduate of Nash Community College’s Basic Law Enforcement Training program, Driver began his career with the Rocky Mount Police Department in February 2013. In recognition of his commitment to duty, he was promoted to senior police officer in August 2017.

Family and friends remember Driver as a firm but respectful officer whose personality and sense of humor made others gravitate toward him.

The annual scholarship supports two scholarships for students enrolled in NCC’s Criminal Justice degree program and one scholarship for a BLET cadet in either fall or spring semester. The scholarship was established by the Officer Chris “Batman” Driver Memorial Fund organization.

NC COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM PRESIDENT VISITS NC Community College System President Thomas Stith visited Nash Community College on Thursday, November 4, 2021. During his visit, President Stith talked with students and team members in the NCC Success Center. Located in the student services and enrollment hub of campus, the Success Center connects students with coaching, academic advising, enrollment, tutoring services, and on-campus resources such as the food pantry, Single Stop – a system used to determine student eligibility for access to public benefits and community resources, and other support services.

President Stith and NCC President Lew Hunnicutt met first responders and participated in an Emergency Medical Services simulation. Located in the Continuing Education Building, the in-classroom ambulance or “SimRig” is a high-fidelity training mannequin that uses computer hardware to allow students to practice and respond to a variety of scenarios to replicate real-world experiences. During the pandemic, this equipment provided an additional opportunity for clinical and field experiences.

The campus tour also highlighted College and Career Readiness, NCC’s indoor firing range and the Haas Center for Advanced Manufacturing Computer-Integrated Machining and Robotics labs.

The tour concluded at the Electric Line Construction training field where President Stith addressed electric lineworkers at a Pole Top Rescue Competition. NCC offers the only two-year degree program of this kind in North Carolina.

NCC TEAM AWARDED AT NC SPACE GRANT HIGH ALTITUDE BALLOONING COMPETITION Nash Community College’s High Altitude Balloon Team won two awards in the 2022 NC Space Grant Community College High Altitude Ballooning Challenge and Competition.

At the competition, teams incorporate the NASA design cycle to design, build, test and fly a scientific experiment onboard their high altitude balloon payload. Student teams attended virtual sessions to monitor progress and ask questions. Then, at the end of the academic year, the teams launched their payloads at a balloon launch and retrieval team competition.

NCC’s student group, known as the Nashtronauts, were awarded for Best Outreach for their work with the Nashville Elementary School STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) class. They also won the 2022 Best Overall Team Award.

NCC student Grayson Morris received the College’s MVP Award this year for his extensive work on several of the systems housed within the payload.

The majority of this project was funded by the Nash Community College Foundation Mini-Grant Program. The Nashtronauts utilized two NCC Foundation Mini-Grants this year, allowing them to fund their test launch and outreach with Nashville Elementary school, as well as expand participation to double the typical number of team members.

The North Carolina Space Grant developed the High Altitude Ballooning Competition for community college teams in 2014. The program has been a huge success and many colleges now have ballooning design incorporated into their STEM curriculum.

AWARDS CEREMONY BRINGS DONORS AND STUDENTS TOGETHER This year’s scholarship recipients had the opportunity to meet the donor providing their tuition support at the 45th Annual Nash Community College Foundation Scholarship Awards Breakfast.

The Foundation awarded $225,568 in scholarships to 266 students for the 2021-2022 academic year at the event held in Brown Auditorium on Thursday, December 2, 2021.

“Today, we live in a world full of challenges and hardships,” student scholarship recipient Candice Alston shared with attendees. “One in which we have seen firsthand, Covid, has caused the loss of loved ones, fear, and isolation. Yet, we remain strong and before us stands an opportunity. Opportunity that has been granted to us by family, friends, and faculty who have continually encouraged and uplifted us, and this college, which is providing the setting, resources, and faculty to help lead us to a brighter future.”

Candice Alston is pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education.

She is the recipient of the Early Childhood Education Faculty & Alumni Scholarship established in 2019 by Sarah Prezioso, Public Services Department Chair and Early Childhood Education Program Director, and Briley Rascoe, instructor, to assist students in the Early Childhood Education program.

“Being a scholarship recipient has opened many doors for me and my children,” Alston said. “I was truly honored to receive this scholarship. The joy I felt and the push of wanting to succeed even more overtook me, and I started thinking ‘Candice, you can do this.’

It reminded me of how much support I have, even when the odds looked stacked against me.”

During the spring of 2020, like many organizations, the NCC Foundation was forced to cancel or redesign its fundraising efforts due to the pandemic. However, donors came through funding the establishment of a record number of new scholarships during the year.

“Over the years, donor support has touched the lives of so many NCC students and families wishing to enhance their education and pursue their dreams,” 2021-2022 NCC Foundation Board President Don Raper said. “Many of the opportunities these students are striving to achieve would not be possible without the continued support of so many donors in this community. Your support provides scholarships that allow the student to earn degrees and diplomas. Many of these students choose to stay in the Rocky Mount area.”

NCC GRAD ‘THE FUTURE OF ADVANCED MANUFACTURING’ Macey O’Hara was preparing to join the Navy after high school when her plans fell through. She never dreamed that a few years later she would be manufacturing foam products at a plant 30 miles west of where she grew up.

“I had taken a welding class at Nash Community College during high school and really enjoyed it, so I thought, why not try welding,” she said. Macey graduated from Nash Central High School and enrolled at NCC. She completed her Associate in Applied Science in Welding Technology at Nash, with honors, in May 2020. “Graduating during the pandemic, I wasn’t quite ready to join the workforce,” she said. “So, I re-enrolled at Nash, this time in Computer-Integrated Machining.” Macey began the program in the fall of 2020 and was hired as an intern by Nomaco in Zebulon the same semester.

“I’ve never been a girly girl,” she said. “I might have the nails, but don’t let that fool you. I read blueprints and drawings for products, use a tape measure and calipers. I like to get in there and work on machines just like the guys.”

As an assistant flex operator at Nomaco, Macey is responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of equipment in extrusion, conversion, recycle (regrind), warehousing, and quality control areas. The term ‘flex’ means she moves around in the facility wherever she is needed.

Experience in both welding and machining has uniquely positioned Macey to troubleshoot machine issues, repair machines, help improve production efficiency and quality, and work in various aspects of the production process.

“People may not realize this, but in manufacturing, specifications and requirements can change all the time,” Macey said. “What is in spec now, may be out of spec later. It’s mind-blowing.”

She enjoys learning how to operate machines in the classroom, and then applying those skills to creating products in the plant. “If you’ve ever been to TJ Maxx and seen the exercise rollers with ‘gaiam’ on them, then I probably helped make those,” she said.

Macey works 30 hours each week while being enrolled full-time at Nash.

She will graduate with her second degree in May 2022. “I tell everybody: you need to go to Nash. The teachers are supportive and understanding and they can help you reach your career goals.”

STUDENT EARNS NCC TRANSFER DEGREES, GAINS EXPERIENCE ON PATH TO MECHANICAL ENGINEERING “The first thing I remember wanting to do for a career was chemistry, which had somehow evolved into chemical engineering by the time I reached high school,” Owen said. “Then I took my first chemistry class and I thought maybe that’s not what I want to do. But I was still interested in engineering.”

Owen set his sights on attending NC State University and landing a career in engineering.

He knew attending the Nash-Rocky Mount Early College High School was one way to get there.

Students attending the Early College High School located on the Nash Community College campus take a combination of high school and college courses. Upon successful completion, they graduate in five years with a high school diploma and either an Associate Degree or two years of college credit transferable to a four-year institution.

Owen graduated from Nash Community College in 2019 with both degrees, with honors. “I would highly recommend NCC,” he said. “Getting to start on Calculus and Physics courses at Nash gave me an opportunity to really understand the material in a way that was challenging but not overbearing. Once I got to State I felt more prepared to take on their more challenging higher-level courses thanks to the great start I had at Nash.”

Owen landed an internship last summer with LS Cable & System in Tarboro. On track to graduate from NCSU in 2023, Owen wants to complete at least one more internship before he leaves NCSU. Upon graduation, he plans to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam as the final step in the process of becoming a professional licensed engineer (PE).

In addition to the Associate in Arts and Associate in Science transfer degrees, NCC also offers an Associate in Engineering degree where students complete a minimum of 60 semester hours of courses that are accepted at Engineering programs at East Carolina University, North Carolina State University, North Carolina A&T, UNC-Charlotte and Western Carolina University. Completing the first two years at NCC could save students more than $30,000 when compared to attending all four years at a university.

GLOBAL SCHOLARS VIRTUAL CAPSTONE SYMPOSIUM HIGHLIGHTS STUDENT EXPERIENCES The Nash Community College Global Scholars program held a virtual capstone for its Spring 2022 graduates. Each graduate created a website to showcase his or her experience in the Global Scholars Program.

Diana Campos-Carreon graduated with an Associate in Science degree and plans to continue her education at Meredith College to major in Biology. “It is important to be a global citizen in order to better understand and interact with those around you,” she said. “I decided to make globalization a part of my educational studies at Nash Community College to learn how to interact in a world that is so diverse and interconnected.” As part of her program requirements, Campos-Carreon completed a domestic immersion project that focused on the lack of doctor availability and other difficulties accessing healthcare in Mexico.

James Flowers, II, a Cybersecurity major, traveled with NCC Study Abroad to Peru in 2018 for his immersion requirement for Global Scholars. “It is important for everyone to be a global citizen,” he said. “I am thankful for the exposure to travel and seeing the world for myself, while also taking global courses to prepare myself for what is ahead.” His global immersion project involved traveling to Honduras during the summer of 2021 with a group called Sparrow Missions.

After graduating from NCC with her Associate in Science degree, Meixing Liu plans to transfer to UNC-Chapel Hill to double major in biology and chemistry with a minor in neuroscience. “Global Scholars create an inclusive community,” Liu said. “People begin to appreciate cultural differences once they learn to embrace their self-identity and interact with other distinct minds.” Liu researched and explored the impact of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for her domestic immersion project.

The Global Scholars program is a collaboration between NCC and UNC World View designed to help students discover, connect and engage in the world around them.

NEW ENDOWMENT ESTABLISHED FOR NCC INITIATIVES The Oakley Collier Endowment for College Initiatives has been established as a permanent legacy to Tim Oakley and Ann Collier’s support of the endeavors at Nash Community College. The endowment will provide discretionary funds to support instructional and equipment needs at the college.

Tim Oakley is the founding principal of Oakley Collier Architects. He graduated from Nash Technical Institute, now Nash Community College, in 1976 with an Associate in Applied Science degree in architectural technology.

Over the last four decades in the field, he has developed expertise coordinating in-house staff, consultants, contractors, construction managers and regulatory agencies. He enjoys technical aspects of architecture including design, management, and construction techniques. In 2000, he was named the Nash Community College Outstanding Alumnus. He joined the college’s Foundation Board of Directors in 2021.

Ann Collier is a partner and principal with Oakley Collier Architects responsible for daily operations within the firm. With more than 35 years of experience in the design profession, she provides specialized programming, planning, and design knowledge for many public projects. Her design experience encompasses a variety of project types including municipal, educational, institutional, and higher education facilities. She graduated from NC State University.

Both Oakley and Collier have a strong history of bringing positive, measurable change to the local community through their leadership with nonprofit, religious and educational organizations.

2022 VETERINARY MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY GRADUATION Nash Community College recognized 12 students during a pinning ceremony held in Brown Auditorium on Wednesday, May 11, 2022 following their completion of the Veterinary Medical Technology degree program.

Reflecting on the time spent in the academic program, graduate Angela Spruill said, “During the weeks when there were multiple quizzes, assignments and exams on top of our children’s homework, soccer games, diaper changes, late night bottle feedings or part time jobs, we still made it to Friday. We learned perseverance.”

The program curriculum is designed to prepare students to assist veterinarians in preparing animals for examination and surgery as vet techs. Some tasks include collecting specimens; performing laboratory, radiographic, anesthetic and dental procedures; assisting in surgery; and providing proper care for animals and their environment.

“In the Veterinary technology program here at Nash, we learned patient care, client communication, lab techniques and much more. This knowledge we will carry with us throughout our careers. But we also learned lessons that we will carry throughout every aspect of our lives.

We learned self-determination by getting up one more day and going to class. On surgery days, we learned the importance of teamwork,” Spruill said.

Vet Tech coursework focuses on anatomy, nutrition, parasitology, pathology, physiology, radiology, terminology, zoology, office practices, laboratory techniques, dentistry, and small and large animal clinical practices. NCC students learn practical skills in the college’s modern, spacious training environment that allows for all on-campus clinical training and animal care to be self-contained.

“Many years from now, when we look back on our lives, our experiences and the things we have learned, there will be memories that fade,” Spruill said. “But the past two years will hold memories that will last a lifetime.”

2022 GRADUATION Nash Community College celebrated the Class of 2022 on Friday, May 13, 2022 recognizing students for completion of degrees, diplomas and certificates at the College’s annual commencement exercises.

The commencement events were held on Friday, May 13, 2022, on the college campus. This year, Adult High School, High School Equivalency and Curriculum graduates had the opportunity to participate in either a drivethrough ceremony in the morning or an in-person ceremony held in the evening in Brown Auditorium.

“What a journey you, and we, have been on to get to this point,” NCC President Dr. Lew Hunnicutt said. “Your perseverance to complete your program of study truly inspires me. You completed your coursework during a worldwide pandemic that continues to this day. Please always keep that in mind when you look back over this major accomplishment.”

NCC’s 2021-2022 Student Government President Justin Joyner is pursuing an Associate in Applied Science degree in Information Technology/ Cybersecurity. Addressing the graduates, he said, “To the class of 2022, well done. I have never stood on a graduation stage. My high school graduation was at the start of COVID. So, to be here now definitely feels strange.”

“Celebrate all the knowledge you have learned here,” Joyner said. “Celebrate the friends you made along the way. Celebrate the family members who calmed you down before an exam. Most importantly, celebrate yourself, take time to appreciate what you have achieved and be proud.”

Rocky Mount Fire Department Chief Corey Mercer delivered the keynote address. “March 2020 was the beginning of something that the world was not prepared for,” Mercer said. “Working together you all found a way to stay on task and meet the requirements of each class that would allow you to be standing here today. You are resilient and the epitome of being resilient.”

Chief Mercer is a community college graduate having earned an associate degree in fire protection technology. He shared the story of his own educational journey.

“In 1992, there was a young man who returned home from the military after two tours in the Middle East. He stood in the lobby of a community college trying to determine where he would take his future. He developed a plan to enroll in a curriculum hoping that he would get the training necessary to secure a job in his chosen field.

With a small family, he took a job to provide for them as he went to community college in the evening. The young man was persistent to stay on the course he had chosen.” Despite various hurdles, Mercer said, “He received a job offer. I want to acknowledge the role the community college played in my quest to gain employment in my dream of becoming a firefighter,” Mercer said. “Without that hope I would have never gained employment in the fire service.”

SPRING ELECTRIC LINE CONSTRUCTION RODEO AND GRADUATION Nash Community College celebrated its Electric Line Construction Technology program Third Class certificate graduates on Thursday, May 5, 2022 with a pole climbing rodeo and graduation ceremony. The day’s celebration began 8:30 AM on NCC’s utility pole training field as Electric Line Construction students competed in a rodeo demonstrating their skills in protected grounding, climbing obstacles and hurt man rescue techniques. With family members, friends and supporters looking on, the students earned points for safety, and were timed during the competition. Winners of the rodeo are Dylan Willette – First Place; Caleb McElvie – Second Place; Justin Edgerton – Third Place.

Nash Community College’s Electric Line Construction curriculum prepares students for line construction in rural and utility settings through laboratory and practical applications. NCC students master competencies including elements of electricity, overhead pole and electrical line construction, safety codes and applications, electric power system, transformer installations, and more. An emphasis on safety is embedded in Nash Community College’s program as students earn OSHA, CDL and CPR certifications during training.

2022 NURSES PINNING Nash Community College recognized Associate Degree Nursing graduates at a pinning ceremony held Thursday, May 12, 2022 in the Brown Auditorium.

“Many times in life, we map out our plans,” 2022 Associate Degree Nursing graduate Mildred Arrington said. “And sometimes we don’t understand that to reach our expected end, we have to take a different route. Sometimes our route is changed by our own choices. I am that person,” Arrington continued. “I had to take some detours. I had to change some highways. There were and there still are times that I question life. But the greatest lesson I learned through all of it is to keep moving.

Do not be afraid to fall. Do not be afraid to begin again. Do not be afraid to invest in yourself.”

The College recognized 33 nursing graduates. This was the first indoor, traditional nurses pinning ceremony held since 2019.

“In my senior year of high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do in life,” 2022 Associate Degree Nursing graduate Kody Wooten said. “The only things I truly knew were that I deeply cared for my fellow humans and that I always wanted to do more to give back to the world around me. Following in my father’s footsteps, I made the decision to join the Army as a soldier in the National Guard and I was given the option to pursue a role as a Medic. It was the training that I received during that period that led me to discover my love for medicine, and it has been Nash Community College that has led me to take that love and appreciation even further.”

Upon graduation, Nash Community College Associate Degree Nursing students are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN licensure exam.

“I stand before you,” Wooten continued, “not only as a graduate of college, but to be pinned as a nursing school graduate, following the dream that I happened upon by chance, but also following the call of my heart to help others through kindness, compassion, and the unconditional love of my fellow humans. Despite the fear of jumping into the unknown, I know that I am well prepared to succeed in my new career thanks to the Associate’s Degree Nursing program here at Nash.”

Both Arrington and Wooten were selected as the 2022 Excellence in Nursing departmental award recipients.

“These students are demonstrating more than just their skills; they are proving that our workforce is prepared to lead the way in every technical area our country needs to maintain a strong global economic presence,” said SkillsUSA North Carolina Director Paul Heidepriem.

“CTE is learning that works for America, and we are very proud of this talented group of students who are true champions dedicated to excellence in their trades.”

During the competition, students worked against the clock and each other, proving their expertise in their area of specialty. The competitions were run with the help of industry experts, trade associations and labor organizations with test competencies set by professional industry standards.

“This is a great opportunity for our students to see where they stand against their competition,” NCC Continuing Education Success Coach Wil van der Meulen said. “It is rewarding to see that their training has paid off and they are prepared to meet and exceed industry standards. These awards are a testament to employers that our students are well-prepared for real-world careers.”

The NCC SkillsUSA Chapter was recognized for having the largest postsecondary membership, more than 100 members and received the Total Participation Chapter Award and Silver Chapter of Distinction Award. In addition, Wil van der Meulen was acknowledged with the Post Secondary Advisor of the Year Award as NCC’s SkillsUSA chapter faculty advisor.

First place student winners will compete in the national SkillsUSA Championship this June in Atlanta.
