Sportingchance to inspireyoungpeople

Vicci Wellsfromthe YouthSport Trust examineshowthe Winter Paralympics, and anew,nationwideinitiative,can engagemoreyoungpeopleinsport.

hismonthsawtheWinter Paralympics takeplace, withathletescompeting in78 differentevents acrosssixsportsin two disciplines;snow sports andice sports. ExperiencingtheperformanceofworldleadingPara-athletescandirectlyand positivelyimpactonyoungpeople’s motivationstowardstheirownparticipation inPE andschoolsport.Indeed,inspiration isoftencitedas thereasonwhynational sportingachievementandmajorsporting eventsaresoimportant.

TConnectedtothis, andthe upcoming ‘summerofsport’, whichseesthecityof Birminghamhostthe2022 Commonwealth Games, anewDepartmentforEducation fundedinitiative, ‘Inclusion2024’,

willbuilduponthewaysthat inspirationalsportingeventshelpto engagepupilsthroughinclusive sportprogrammesandfestivals reachingeverycountyinEngland. Ourcharity,the Youth Sport Trust,isdelightedto be ableto workalongsidenasenaspart of aconsortiumoforganisations tosupportthousands of schools

toimprovePE andschoolsport for youngpeoplewith SEND.Inclusion 2024willaimtoimproveprovision ofinclusivePEfor150,000 young peoplethroughtraining, advice,and guidanceto5,000schools.

Thefestivalsandprogrammesof sportwillinvolvecreatingshared experiencestohelpdevelop friendshipsbetweenyoungpeople, providingopportunitiesforschools andcommunitiestopromoteinclusion anddiversity. Newresourceshavebeen co-createdwithyoungpeople,placing youthvoiceatthehearttoensureinspiring, accessible,andmeaningfulexperiences. Theseresourcesprovidecreativewaysof

deliveringwinterpara-sportsin aschoolor outdoors,providingfunandenjoymentforall.

MarjorieMcClure, aspecialschool in Bromley, is anexample of aschoolusing parasportstoengageall pupils.The school placestheParalympic andOlympic valuesatthe heartofschool culture. All youngpeoplecanjoininat theirownlevel andtheyare givenmultipleopportunities toshape, participate, lead,andevenfilm events.Theimpactseeninyoungpeople hasbeencenteredaroundincreased selfesteem,interest,anda sense ofbelonging, withpupilsexposedtonewsports andto morepositiveandrelatablerolemodels. Pupilachievementiscelebrated acrossthe schoolandparasportshavesincebeen introducedintothePEcurriculum.

Eliteathletesthathave participatedin aninternationalsportingeventsuchasthe Paralympicscanoftenbeamuch-needed motivatorforyoungpeoplewithSEND. Our researchreport,the Classof2035 (https://bit.ly/3HIR383), conductedby ForesightFactory, foundthatjust 33per centofyoungpeoplewith adisabilitysay theirteacherorsportscoachinspiresthem tobemoreactive, comparedwith42 percentofthosechildrenwhodo nothave adisability.

Theinspirationthatsportingevents providecan motivateyoungpeople;every singleathletehasastory that involves confidence,aspiration,resilience,or empathy.Forexample,research conducted followingthe mostrecentParalympic andOlympic Gameshighlighted their impact,findingthat47 percentofpeople questioned believethatathletesare importantrolemodelswhocaninspiretheir generation.Meanwhile,one in fouryoung peoplesaidthathearingathletes’stories andhow theyhaveovercomechallenges canhelpthemintheir lives.

“Peoplewithdisabilitiesaremorelikely tobelessactiveandisolated,soithas neverbeenmoreimportanttoinspireand educateyoungpeopleaboutthepowerof inclusivesportthattheycandoanywhere andusethroughouttheirlives.”

Inclusion 2024 will aimtoimprove provision of inclusivePEfor 150,000youngpeople throughtraining,advice, andguidanceto 5,000 schools.

4 Getcreative –you mayhaveto adaptactivitiestomakethemwork foryourenvironment,sousewhat’s availablearoundschoolorhomeand thinkoutsidethebox.

5 Inclusion,Inclusion,Inclusion –activitiesandchallengesshould beinclusiveforallabilities,andsportand physicalactivityarealwaysmorefunwith asmanypeopleaspossibleinvolved.
