Location: IES Torrevicens (Generalitat de Catalunya) / Lleida (SPAIN)
Contents of the activity: In the topic "similarities" in 2nsd grade mathematics we used workshop 3 (students of 13 or 14 years old). Using Thales and Eratosthens’ calculations, the students have measured the height of school’s building. And, with statistic, they have reduced the error of their measures and found a confidence interval.
Sequencing: Day 1 – 1h - Explain Eratosthenes’ calculations. Example of Thales. Students take measurements (of small objects (or friends height) and the shadow of the building). Day 2 – 1h - Calculations with spreadsheet. Extrapolar conclusions.
