INFORMATION

The Narromine Region includes three very unique towns, the hub being the town of Narromine on the banks of the tranquil Macquarie River, Tomingley a quaint village on the edge of the Goobang National Park and Trangie with a strong Cobb and Co History.

Renowned for its agricultural diversity paired with excellent tourist attractions, the Region is the perfect spot to stop and enjoy the delights of Country NSW, to smell the Irises and to take in the vast open spaces.

While the region is known for its friendly locals and rich culture, the area is most famous for its aeronautical history showcased by the Narromine Aviation Museum which is home to aviation memorabilia, historic photographs, and three unique aircrafts including the world’s ONLY replica of the 1907 Wright Flyer ‘A’ Model.

The region is a popular stop-over for travellers heading west and the perfect scenic route for those travelling the Newell from Parkes on to Gilgandra, just turn off at Tomingley and take time to explore. Once in the region, sit back and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and experience the high-end boutiques, unique eateries and exciting attractions scattered through the three towns.

Getting here

The Narromine region is located a short 30-minute drive West of Dubbo on the Mitchell Highway and 5.5 hours from Sydney. The interstate highway linkages from all directions and daily public transport travel options are endless!

Take a plane, train or coach from Sydney to Dubbo and hire a car or take a bus from Dubbo to Narromine. Head North with your family and enjoy the scenic route between Tomingley and Eumungerie, straight through the heart of the Narromine region.

For those that prefer to travel by plane, charter your own flight direct to Narromine and fly in as you please.

Macquarie River and wetlands

The majestic Macquarie River flows through Narromine and Trangie, providing fantastic opportunities for fishing, water-skiing, canoeing, swimming and other water-based activities.

The Narromine Wetlands, located to the south of town, are a hub for nature lovers and is the perfect location for a picnic and birdwatching.

Boasting an array of open spaces and reserves dotted along the Macquarie River, visitors are encouraged to relax and enjoy the abundance of wildlife calling the region home.

Located in the scenic Macquarie Valley, Narromine invites you to relax amongst a lush rural setting, dotted with quaint country pubs and fabulous fishing spots. While the town may be renowned for its friendly locals and bucolic charm, it’s the aeronautical history that wins over visitors year after year.

Narromine Rotary Club and Narromine Shire Council have worked in partnership to enhance facilities at the wetlands and the area is now a popular location for locals and visitors alike. Public toilets and undercover picnic tables are available onsite.

Honouring a Local LegendGlenn McGrath Statue

The statue commemorates former Australian test cricketer, Glenn McGrath.

Glenn McGrath grew up in Narromine, where he first played cricket, and his potential was spotted by former International Cricketer, Doug Walters.

Glenn moved to Sydney to play grade cricket for Sutherland and debuted for NSW during the 1992–93 cricket season. Glenn McGrath capped his rapid rise in the next Australian summer with selection in the Australian Test team after only eight first-class matches.

As one of the most highly regarded fast bowlers in cricketing history, Glenn McGrath played a leading role in Australia’s domination of world cricket from the mid1990s to the early 21st century. He holds the world record for the highest number of Test wickets by a fast bowler and is fourth on the all-time list. Award-winning sculptor Brett ‘Mon’ Garling immortalised Glenn McGrath in this magnificent bronze statue located in Tom Perry Park.

NARROMINE AERODROME

Internationally-renowned for its fantastic thermals which make for great gliding conditions, Narromine is one of the top three gliding locations in the world!

Visit the Narromine Aerodrome and experience the thrill of flying with a glider, air plane or ultralight flight. The historic Narromine Aerodrome is home to the oldest Aero Club in regional Australia, the Narromine Aviation Museum, various gliding and flying schools and clubs, as well as an array of aviation related businesses.

The Narromine Aviation Museum highlights the history of aviation in the Narromine area. Beginning more than 90 years ago with a small locally built aircraft, the story expands through the ‘barnstorming’ years of the 1920’s and 1930’s. With the establishment of Narromine Aero Club, famous aviators were encouraged to visit, holding some of Australia’s most successful air pageants of the era.

Be captivated by artefacts, documents and photographs that tell the story of aviation as it evolved at one of Australia’s most historic aerodromes when you explore the Narromine Aviation Museum. Take a walk around the wartime parade ground, enjoying some of the original buildings still in use today. See photographs and documents from the early period including a copy of the Aero Club’s fascinating 1930’s scrapbook and World War II paraphernalia including when Narromine Aerodrome became a busy flying training school for the RAAF.

Get an up close view of a large scale model of the aerodrome, two aero engines; one from a Tiger Moth trainer, the other a massive Rolls Royce Merlin from one of the RAF Mosquito bombers which were based in Narromine in 1945 and a locally built and operational Wright Brother’s 1907 Model A Flyer replica.

NARROMINE AVIATION MUSEUM

In 2020 Narromine celebrates 100 years since it played its part in the genesis of air travel across the world. To mark the centenary, adventurer Michael Smith flew a modern amphibious aircraft along the route from England. On his Australian leg he was joined by a pair of ultralights. The three crews stopped over at Narromine, just as Sir Ross Smith and crew had in 1920.

The Narromine Aviation Museum, a local volunteer project, was opened in 2002 by pioneer aviatrix NancyBird Walton, and extended in 2016. It displays a unique collection to showcase the remarkable story of local aviation. Highlights include three aircraft believed to be unique in the world:

• Narromine’s Wright Flyer ‘A’ - the only flyable replica of the 1907 ancestor of powered aircraft.

• 1938 Corben Super Ace homebuilt light sport aircraft

• 1953 Hawkridge Venture Glider

A 1955 Sabre jet fighter can be viewed separately. A pair of Rolls Royce Merlin and other aero engines form a rare display. Other attractions include;

• World War I collections of the airmen who founded Narromine Aero Club in 1929, including a small piece of the Red Baron’s plane

• The Aero Club’s 1930’s scrapbook copy, which visitors can read in a 1930’s lounge-room setting

• Large collections telling the World War II stories of Narromine’s RAAF elementary flying training school, a top secret British bomber squadron, and war loan schemes

• The local post-war stories of a RAAF Beaufighter squadron, Qantas Super Constellation training, the aerodrome’s international status, and the Aero Club.

The Museum offers a self-guided recorded walking tour, and special catered tours upon request. A large auditorium is available for events hire.

Located at the Narromine Aerodrome on the Mitchell Highway the Narromine Aviation Museum has ample parking for visitors with Caravans and RV’s.

A short drive west of Narromine is Trangie – a town of 1,000, filled with spirited people who are passionate about their community. Steeped in history dating back to Cobb & Co, Trangie’s landscape provides a tangible link to the town’s pioneering spirit.

Relax by the Goan Waterhole, home to the “Big Billy”, take in the abundance of culture represented at the Wungunja Cultural Centre and experience firsthand how cotton is processed in our local Cotton Gin.

While in town, unearth a gem at one of the unique boutiques featuring homewares and high-end fashion to original artworks.

As soon as you enter Trangie the first thing you will notice is the wide open spaces. Our open spaces range from playing fields to natural landscapes encapsulating everything about country living.

Facilities in our parks include sports grounds, BBQs, toilets and playgrounds. Many parks are also the setting for public artworks, venues and unique features.

WUNGUNJA CULTURAL CENTRE TRANGIE

The Wungunja Cultural Centre was established to protect the culture and heritage of the Aboriginal people of Trangie.

The centre showcases a large variety of artefacts that have been sourced through long term loans with the Australian Museum and the Office of Environment and Heritage, donations from local people and collections owned by the Trangie Local Aboriginal Land Council. The valuable collection represents family history and information including displays of photos and stories of local Aboriginal people who have served our Country from World War I.

The Wungunja Cultural Centre is a central hub that celebrates the local Aboriginal culture in our region. Family history records of Aboriginal families that once lived on the Macquarie, Bogan and Lachlan rivers are held in the centre and are a popular attraction for visiting relatives to the centre.

The Centre is also a popular outlet for local artists to showcase and sell a variety of painted items that include art, boomerangs, good will stones, vases and didgeridoos. It is a place where school children are able to visit to build their knowledge on Aboriginal culture and heritage.

Functions held at the centre include community events like Naidoc, Reconciliation and Sorry Day or healing celebrations.

Two carved ceremonial trees removed from “Mullah” Trangie in the 1960’s are a highlight of the centre and are currently on long term loan from the Australian Museum.

These trees hold significant value to the local Aboriginal community of Trangie where their engravings are unique.

Also located at the site of the Wungunja Cultural Centre is an old pine hut, known as the “Rovers Den”. This magical little pine hut was built in the 1930’s by local businessmen including the local medical practitioner, Dr McLean. The Hut was built for the purpose of holding meetings for the scout groups and then later used for housing. Aboriginal people moved from the river to live in the hut in earlier years and it was later used as emergency housing for many families in need.

Visitors to Trangie can explore the beautifully restored centre, experience the skills of the Aboriginal people in their craftsmanship in tool making, or just to relax and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the surrounds of the centre where many yarns have been told by the community Elders, and the greater Trangie community.

As you drive through Trangie turn into our beautiful main street known as Dandaloo Street. The Wungunja Cultural Centre is located two blocks from the highway on the corner of Dandaloo and Harris Streets.
