will always remember.

It’s been an exciting month in Napier. I enjoyed attending our Napier’s three Cricket World Cup games at McLean Park. It was great to see so many of you out supporting the teams – especially at the sold-out Black Caps vs Afghanistan match.

An exciting event on the horizon is the opening of the Napier pump track on Marine Parade on Saturday March 28 – an event many have been counting down to (if the response on Facebook is anything to go by). It’s looking great and I think it will be a wonderful additional to the Parade. Come down from 10am for the official launch and be in to win some great spot prizes thanks to Avanti Taradale.

We hosted the official welcomes for two of the teams – United Arab Emirates and Afghanistan – at MTG Hawke’s Bay. For me a highlight of both events was watching the stirring performances from William Colenso College’s kapa haka group. They did our city proud and I’m sure it will be something the cricketers

Over recent months we have been working hard on putting together Napier City Council’s Long Term Plan. It goes out for public consultation next month and I encourage you all to read it and take the opportunity to have your say on what you think we should be focusing on over the coming 10 years. Look out for a copy of the plan in the Napier Courier on April 22.

Personally, I’m traveling to the UK to see the Rugby World Cup so I’d like to see New Zealand win. On a professional level, one of my main aims is to see the Napier-Gisborne railway line made into a cycle track. Meet our Strategic Planner

Fleur Lincoln

Ever wondered what makes Napier tick? Who designs new roads, playgrounds, recreational spaces? Who ensures our city is going to cope with future growth and sustain its vibrancy?

Of course it is an enormous team effort, but one of the masterminds behind the plans to take Napier into the next decade and beyond is Napier City Council Strategic Planner, Fleur Lincoln.

Fleur is managing ‘City Vision: small city BIG ideas’, a project that brings the plans for the CBD and Ahuriri together to give them a “people” focus.

“It is not just about one road, infrastructural design, heritage, parking or design. It’s about the community and working out what makes retailers prosper. We want to bring people into the CBD for a variety of things – not just shopping.”

The recent establishment of the temporary Urban Oasis in Market Street, a contemporary space with bean bags, market umbrellas, turf and free Wi-Fi, as well as the interactive fun zone in Emerson Street West are just two by-products of City Vision.

“We’ve introduced these experimental spaces to keep people in the CBD longer. They were going to be removed in April but because they’ve been so successful we’ll keep them but change them for winter.”

A former planning consultant for Opus, Fleur is working with community leaders to identify other spaces in the CBD and Ahuriri for more of the same things.

For Fleur, City Vision is not just a project, it is a “once in a career” opportunity.

“It is every planner’s dream,” Fleur says. “Being Napier born and bred it is a privilege to influence the development of a city I grew up in.”

Napier Pump Track The Napier Pump Track on Marine Parade is nearing completion and will officially be opened on Saturday 28 March at 10am.

Come and help us celebrate the opening which will include a demonstration by the Hawke’s Bay BMX Club and be followed by a Pump Track Skills session for those wanting to learn new skills. Thanks to Avanti Taradale, we’ll be giving out some great spot prizes too!

The basic goal of a pump track, besides having fun, is for the rider to learn how to ‘pump’ the terrain to maintain speed. Pump tracks are set up with a series of rollers and berms that allow the rider to gain and maintain speed along the track without pedalling.

Opens 28 March The Napier Pump Track will be the first of its kind in New Zealand.

Designed by Jeff Carter of Rotorua’s South Star Adventures, the pump track is inspired by a track located in Mendrisio, Switzerland.

This full size pump track replaces the junior pump track that has recently been moved and caters for a much wider range of skills, abilities, and ages. It covers an area 60 metres long by 30 metres wide and consists of 500 metres of continuous tracks. www.napier.govt.nz keyword: #bikepumptrack

Have Your Say Do you think Napier needs a velodrome? What would make Pandora Pond more user friendly?

These are just two of the questions the Napier Mayor and Napier Councillors are hoping will generate some feedback from residents and ratepayers between 10 April and 11 May.

Napier’s Future Various events including a site in the Central Business District for people to talk to Councillors and Mayor Bill Dalton about Napier’s Long Term Plan, are currently being planned.

Legislative changes in August last year mean all Councils must now come up with a Consultation Document which summarises the major projects, issues, strategies and policies in their draft Long Term Plan. Napier City Council’s Consultation Document covers the 10-year period from 2015-2025.

On 22 April, the Consultation Document will be distributed to Napier households, and will be available from the main Civic Building reception and Council facilities from that date. However, if you can’t wait for the paper version of the Consultation Document, along with its supporting documents, it will be on the Council website – www.napier.govt.nz - from 10 April.

The formal engagement (consultation) period for the Long Term Plan runs from noon on 11 April to noon on 11 May. Anyone wanting to make a submission can do so using the submission form found in the Consultation Document, or by visiting the Napier City Council website.

STQRY App

Next time you’re at the National Aquarium of New Zealand be sure to try out STQRY. It’s a mobile storytelling app that is free to download and will give you access to another level of information about the animals, how they are fed and their interesting little quirks and habits.

You’ll find STQRY signage at many of the exhibits, and once you scan the QR code through the app you’ll be invited into a world of discovery of videos, audio, beautiful pictures, and engaging stories. www.nationalaquarium.co.nz

School Holiday Fun

What’s On? MTG Happenings

What have you got planned for your kids over the April school holidays? If you’re short of ideas, here’s a few thoughts to help you out.

Have a jaw-some time at the Aquarium Sharks are the theme for April.

14-16 April: Learn all about sharks, including a shark dissection! Touch a shark jaw and even hold a 10 million year old shark tooth.

For 6-12 year olds, 8.30am-12.30pm, $29 per child per session.

There’s a jam packed array of activities both at the pools and offsite during the holidays. A mixture of movies, visits to parks and playgrounds and attending special events is part of the weekly programme, along with daily swims and fun on the big inflatable at the pools. For children aged 5 -12 years old, from 7.30am to 5.30pm care available.

It is all about art at MTG this school holidays!

New exhibitions have just opened, including Dick Frizzell’s fabulous artist proofs. Create your own Frizzell-inspired artwork incorporating some of his famous techniques, try your hand at matching together pieces of art in a memory game or discover the galleries with our activity trail.

Aquatic Centre Holiday Programme

The Big Easy 2015 The Big Easy on the Hawke’s Bay Trails is the ultimate antidote to all those serious lycra laden cycling events held across the country.

The Big Easy ride is 45kms and riders are encouraged to take all day and enjoy the many tasty Hawke’s Bay distractions along the way.

At 10am on Easter Saturday, riders will head out from the Village Green in the Havelock North Domain, (there will be wave starts this year) along Te Mata Road to hit the limestone off-road Hawke’s Bay Trails. After enjoying 45km of tasty stops riders will finish at Church Road Winery for the finale party and concert.

For the first time this year there is a “Family Start” option from Farndon Park in Clive at 10.30am. This is encouraged for those with smaller children wanting to be part of the action.

The concert at Church Road will feature Uncle Monkey and The Hitchcock Railway Band - a Joe Cocker tribute band.

Tickets are $30 for adults and $10 for kids (12 and under).
