By earning your award, you’ve achieved something meaningful. You’ve developed knowledge and skills that will guide you through the next chapter of your life, whether that’s here in Scotland or further afield. I hope you leave us with confidence, curiosity, and a sense of pride in what you’ve accomplished. You’re now part of a global community of Edinburgh Napier graduates who are doing remarkable things in all sorts of places – we really are everywhere.

We hope you’ll keep in touch, and don’t be shy about coming back to say hello or letting us know what you’ve been up to. Once you’re part of the Edinburgh Napier community, you always are.

Reaching graduation is no small achievement.

Your presence here today reflects commitment, hard work and growth. It’s also a wonderfully happy occasion where you get to pause for a minute, take a deep breath and celebrate with the friends and family who have supported you along the way.

It is always an honour and a privilege to personally congratulate you on the awards you have worked so hard to achieve, and I’m so very sorry that I cannot be in the hall in person today to celebrate with you.

I’ve been leading graduations as Chancellor of Edinburgh Napier University since 2021.

At each ceremony, I have been so impressed by everything I have seen – it’s very different from the small institution that existed when I was a wee boy growing up in the city. There is so much going for this place, not least the terrific teaching.

In my conversations with alumni, it has been fantastic to see the vital roles Edinburgh Napier graduates are performing across society. Your predecessors are everywhere – innovating, leading, and making a difference in so many sectors. It has emphasised in my mind that the quality of your degree will stand you in good stead for making the most of the opportunities that will come your way.

My career was very much founded on my education, as a basis for continuing to learn, and I hope yours will be too. No one can predict the future, what is going to happen to the economy or to the planet, but the skills and the knowledge with which you

have graduated will help you navigate life and your career with confidence.

Honorary Graduates’ Book The first Honorary Graduates’ Book was presented to the University by a previous Principal & Vice Chancellor Professor Dame Joan K Stringer DBE at her Inauguration ceremony in November

2003. The Honorary Graduates’ Book sits next to the Mace at all graduation ceremonies, and the signing of the book forms part of the ceremony for new Honorary Graduates and Fellows.

REGALIA University Tartan

The University Motto

The Edinburgh Napier tartan was designed for the University by Kinloch Anderson, tailors and kiltmakers by Royal Appointment and based on Clan Napier tartan.

Without wisdom, all is in vain.

The sett has been adapted to reflect the features and colours of our Coat of Arms with red predominant against a white background.

Coat of Arms

The Edinburgh Napier tartan is registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans.

The Coat of Arms of Edinburgh Napier University was designed by the Court of the Lord Lyon. The shield is split into three sections, each of which reflects a different part of our heritage, including our association with John Napier and the City of Edinburgh.

The first section, on the top left of the Shield, a triple towered castle, is an allusion to our location in the City of Edinburgh.

The Mace The mace bearer leads the Chancellor’s Procession. The mace was presented to the University by Sir Donald and Lady McCallum on 7 July 1989. Sir Donald McCallum was the first Honorary Graduate of Edinburgh Napier University, when he received a Doctor of Science in July 1986.

The mace was made by Christie’s of Edinburgh and bears the names of the Honorary Graduates. The mace is carried at all ceremonial and formal occasions at which the Chancellor or Vice Chancellor of the University is present.

Moving in a clockwise direction, section two contains three crescent moons and celebrates our connections to Napier Merchiston.

The third section/division displays a red saltire scalloped between four red roses, an allusion to later Arms of Napier.

ORDER OF CEREMONY A piper plays at the beginning of each ceremony and the Assembly stands, if able, for the Entrance Processions.

All graduands and their guests should remain in the Usher Hall auditorium throughout the ceremony, from the start of the entrance processions to the recessional.

The ceremony is an enjoyable, formal occasion and graduands and guests are asked to be respectful of the event and the experience of other attendees.

GRADUATION ETIQUETTE • Always think of other guests and graduands.

• Clap/celebrate for all our graduands, whether you know them or not!

• If you need to, only speak quietly during the ceremony.

• Stay in the auditorium once the ceremony begins until it ends.

• Switch your phones to silent or switch off entirely.

• This is an inclusive and nonpolitical event. Please do not produce any items such as flags or signs.

HONORARY GRADUATE Helena Good is an award-winning educator and the Director of Daydream Believers. She founded Daydream Believers in 2017 with a clear aim: to put creativity at the centre of education.

What began as a small idea has grown into a movement that connects schools, universities and industry to help young people see creativity as a vital skill for life.

In partnership with Edinburgh Napier University, Helena helped develop and credit-rate the Creative Thinking Qualification at SCQF Level 5 and 6. This qualification gives creativity formal recognition within education and has been praised for offering learners new ways to build confidence and apply their imagination to real-world challenges. In 2022, Daydream Believers was named one of HundrED’s Top 100 global innovations in education.

Helena’s contribution has also been recognised nationally. She was awarded TES UK Lecturer of the Year in 2020 and, in July 2025, received an MBE for services to education.

Helena leads with energy, warmth, and vision, inspiring others to see creativity as a vital life skill. She is on a mission to turn “daydreamer” into a serious career goal, and her greatest joy remains watching young people discover their potential and light up with curiosity and confidence.

JJ Chalmers is a TV presenter with a remarkable story. A former Royal Marine Commando, his military career was cut short when he sustained life-changing injuries in an IED explosion in Afghanistan.

Following years of rehabilitation, JJ competed in the 2014 Invictus Games, winning three medals. Acting as a spokesperson for the inaugural Games gave him his first taste of television during the publicity rounds, and a search for a new challenge soon led him into broadcasting. His career has since gone from strength to strength, with highlights including anchoring coverage of both the Olympics and Paralympics.

HONORARY GRADUATE Angela Grahame KC did not know any lawyers when she was at school, but inspired by courtroom dramas she pursued law despite her headteacher’s advice that it was “too difficult.”

She studied hard and was admitted as an Advocate in 1995, developing a wide-ranging civil practice.

Andrew Bouglas Doctor of the University Laureator: Geoff Day, Marketing & External Relations

Between 2003 and 2007 she prosecuted jury trials in the High Court, including cases of murder and rape. In 2009, at the age of 41, she was appointed Queen’s Counsel. Practising in a male-dominated environment, Angela overcame many challenges and went on to serve as Vice-Dean of Faculty from 2016 to 2020 — only the second woman to hold the role in nearly 500 years. During her tenure she introduced the Faculty’s first Bullying and Harassment Policy and represented the profession internationally.

Angela is also a Barrister, Arbitrator and Mediator, and in 2020 she was invited to act as Senior Counsel to the Sheku Bayoh Public Inquiry. Over 100 hearing days, broadcast worldwide, she personally examined 78 witnesses to help uncover the circumstances surrounding Mr Bayoh’s death. She now serves as Chair of the Professional Conduct Committee of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Andrew Bouglas started his radio career as a volunteer at Radio Borders in 1991. His first professional radio job was in 1998 at Northsound Radio in Aberdeen, where he was soon offered the breakfast show. He moved to Radio Forth in Edinburgh in 2001, initially joining Forth Two before switching to Forth One in 2003. The following year he was named Presenter of the Year at the NTL Awards. Breakfast show Boogie in the Morning has won three “Golds” at the UK ARIA Awards, including back-to-back Music Breakfast Show of the Year awards in 2024 and 2025. Andrew is married to Aimi and the couple have a nine-year-old daughter, Emilia.

HONORARY GRADUATE Arlene is a radio presenter, part of the breakfast show Boogie in the Morning, and can be heard across Scotland Monday to Saturday. She also broadcasts across the UK on Greatest Hits Radio on Sunday evenings and every weekday afternoon on Mellow Magic. Arlene has difficulty saying “no”!

From her early beginnings on Grampian Television, through her time with STV and the BBC, Arlene has built a varied and successful media career. She is also part of the presenting team on Landward — BBC Scotland’s rural affairs programme — and is a regular host of events across Scotland.

In her spare time, Arlene enjoys country walks, a log fire, and a fine glass of wine (not necessarily in that order).

Susan Morrison has had a career that fits the Oxford definition of “career” perfectly, moving swiftly and in an uncontrollable manner. Despite a chronic inability to plan, organise, or read a map, she has carved out a life as a stand-up comedian, radio broadcaster, newspaper columnist, writer, history festival director, MC, public historian, and, in Susan’s words, a truly terrible actor.

A proud Glaswegian, Susan describes herself as much like the Royal Yacht Britannia; built on the Clyde and now berthed in Leith. She contributes weekly to Edinburgh’s cultural life through her Edinburgh Evening News column and regular performances at The Stand Comedy Club. Her passion for making the world better is evident in her work nurturing groups such as the Women’s Impact Network, and she has recently been appointed as an Ambassador for the Women’s Fund for Scotland.

Susan has been instrumental in supporting public engagement at Edinburgh Napier University. She co-pioneered Bright Club in Edinburgh, helping researchers bring their work to life through comedy, and played a central role in the Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas, mentoring academics to communicate complex ideas with clarity and humour. Her support has enabled dozens of ENU researchers to connect with audiences in meaningful and memorable ways, and her creativity and generosity have influenced how research is shared beyond academia, reflecting the University’s values throughout.
