Graduation is an exciting milestone in a person’s life and today is a day when you, your families and friends come together to celebrate this significant achievement. For all the University staff, each graduation is a unique opportunity to highlight your success and celebrate with you in person. For me, these autumn ceremonies will be particularly memorable, marking the final Edinburgh graduations I will have the honour and pleasure of presiding over as Principal of Edinburgh Napier University.
Today marks the culmination of a long period of learning and, for each of you, a goal realised. The sense of pride and excitement you feel is shared by all your peers present today. You belong to a diverse and talented group of people with unique attributes, skills and knowledge that will help you make a positive difference to the communities in which you will work and live, be they here in Scotland or beyond.
As you progress in your careers, please maintain your connection to Edinburgh Napier University. Help shape our future as valued alumni and take pride in us as we will continue to do in you. I hope that you will always see yourselves as part of our community: our growing reputation and success will be built in no small manner by your achievements.

It is an honour and a privilege to present you with your awards today – ones I know you have worked so hard to achieve.
I’ve been attending graduations as Chancellor of Edinburgh Napier University since 2021. At each ceremony, I have been so impressed by everything I have seen – it’s very different from the small institution that existed when I was a wee boy growing up in the city. There is so much going for this place, not least the terrific teaching.
In my conversations with alumni, it has been fantastic to see the vital roles Edinburgh Napier graduates are performing across society. Your predecessors are everywhere –innovating, leading, and making a difference in so many sectors. It has emphasised in my mind that the quality of your degree will stand you in good stead for making the most of the opportunities that will come your way.
Congratulations and best wishes for the future.
My career was very much founded on my education, as a basis for continuing to learn, and I hope yours will be too. No one can predict the future, what is going to happen to the economy or to the planet, but the skills and the knowledge with which you have graduated will help you navigate life and your career with confidence.

Honorary Graduates’ Book
The first Honorary Graduates’ Book was presented to the University by the previous Principal & Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Joan K Stringer DBE at her Inauguration ceremony in November
2003. The Honorary Graduates’ Book sits next to the Mace at all graduation ceremonies, and the signing of the book forms part of the ceremony for new Honorary Graduates and Fellows.
REGALIA
University Tartan
The Edinburgh Napier tartan was designed for the University by Kinloch Anderson, tailors and kiltmakers by Royal Appointment and based on Clan Napier tartan.
The sett has been adapted to reflect the features and colours of our Coat of Arms with red predominant against a white background. The Edinburgh Napier tartan is registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans.
The University Motto
Without wisdom, all is in vain.
Coat of Arms
The Coat of Arms of Edinburgh Napier University was designed by the Court of the Lord Lyon. The shield is split into three sections, each of which reflects a different part of our heritage, including our association with John Napier and the City of Edinburgh.
The first section, on the top left of the Shield, a triple towered castle, is an allusion to our location in the City of Edinburgh.
Moving in a clockwise direction, section two contains three crescent moons and celebrates our connections to Napier Merchiston.
The Mace
The Mace leads the Chancellor’s Procession. It was presented to the University by Sir Donald and Lady McCallum on 7 July 1989. Sir Donald McCallum was the first Honorary Graduate of Edinburgh Napier University, when he received a Doctor of Science in July 1986.
The Mace was made by Christie’s of Edinburgh and bears the names of the Honorary Graduates. The Mace is carried at all ceremonial and formal occasions at which the Chancellor or Vice Chancellor of the University is present.
The third section/division displays a red saltire scalloped between four red roses, an allusion to later Arms of Napier.

All graduands and their guests should remain in the Usher Hall auditorium throughout the ceremony, from the start of the entrance procession to the recessional. The ceremony is an enjoyable, formal occasion and graduands and guests are asked to be respectful of the event and the experience of other attendees.

Laureator: Michael Greenhalgh, Secretary to Court, Director of Planning and Strategy
Alex is a dynamic leader who recently retired after a distinguished career. He began as a trainee accountant at West Lothian Council, rising to Chief Executive. Under his leadership, the Council became one of the UK’s top performers, winning numerous awards for its innovative, community-focused services. Since retiring, Alex has served on the Scottish Council of the Prince’s Trust and chairs Youth Link Scotland, Forth Valley Health Board, West Lothian Highland Games, and West Lothian College. He was awarded a CBE in 2007 and named Prince’s Trust Scottish Volunteer of the Year in 2009.

Jill is an esteemed sports broadcaster and Patron of My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. Known for her work in rugby and cycling, she was the UK’s first female rugby presenter, hosting Rugby Special. Jill has covered six Olympic Games, five Rugby World Cups, and the Six Nations for the BBC and ITV. A close friend of the late Doddie Weir, she served as CEO of My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, growing it into a respected, award-winning organisation that plays a key role in the motor neuron disease community. Jill stepped down from her CEO role to become Patron in 2024. She lives with her husband Carl and their two children in Cheltenham and is President of Cheltenham Tigers RFC.

Richie Gray is the founder and elite performance coach of Global Sport Innovation Limited. He has decades of experience coaching the best rugby teams in the world, including the Scottish Rugby Union, the South African National Team, the Springbok Sevens, the Fiji National Rugby Union Team, and French clubs Lyon, Montpellier Hérault Rugby, and Rugby Club Toulonnais. His expertise in contact and collision sports led to the development of unique training methods and technical equipment used in rugby, American football, and other sports. Through his technical training aid business, GSI Performance, Richie has partnered with organisations like World Rugby and the NFL, educating around half a million US coaches in his innovative tackle coaching methodology.
Stephen is an influential advocate for making the financial world more open, creative, and inclusive through innovative digital and data initiatives. With a career spanning over four decades, he has led customer-focused, technology-driven transformations across a range of financial organisations, from large institutions to early-stage enterprises. Stephen is the Founder and Chairman of FinTech Scotland and Director of the Centre for Financial Innovation and Technology, both focused on delivering positive economic outcomes through innovation. He was awarded an OBE for his contributions to financial and technology innovation.

Laureator: Professor Jill Stavert, School of Health & Social Care
Theresa Shearer is an internationally recognised leader in human rights-driven public services. As CEO of Enable, she leads a 2,500-strong team supporting 13,000 people to live independently in their communities. Theresa is Vice President of Inclusion Europe, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and has served on both the Law Family Commission on Civil Society and the Shinkwin Commission on inclusive business. She co-founded the Breaking Barriers programme, which widens access to universities and workplaces for disabled young people, and she continues to advise and mentor leadership in the UK’s third sector. A champion of diversity, equity, and inclusion, Theresa fosters partnerships to build a more inclusive economy.

15 months after completing your studies at Edinburgh Napier you will be contacted and invited to take part in the Graduate Outcomes survey. This will help current and future students gain an insight into career destinations and development.
Data Protection Legislation
You s hould be aware that the ceremonies will be filmed and photographs may be taken. A live film feed will be used to project the ceremonies on to a back screen on stage.
This may also be streamed externally on the University’s website to allow remote viewing by family members or guests who cannot attend. Videos of ceremonies may also be screened at relevant University events and, at a later date, will be made available for viewing from the University’s website.
