The goals of our Dual Language program are for students to become bilingual and biliterate; to develop sociocultural competence and to experience academic excellence in two languages.

So, who are our students? Some of our students speak only Spanish at home and are learning English at school. Some of our students speak only English at home and are learning Spanish in school. Some students speak both Spanish and English at home and are developing both of their languages at school and some of our students speak a different language at home and are learning both English and Spanish at school. One thing to note is that our Dual Language students stay together as a group through all of elementary school, however, they do have opportunities to spend some time with other students in other classes during various parts of the day.

Our program is designed so that ideally there is a balance of students who speak Spanish and English so that by working together students support each other as they use each language.

Both Spanish and English are used for instruction. Our teachers know that roughly half of the class is learning in a language that is not their home language all of the time, so they use many strategies to ensure that students understand what they are teaching. Our curriculum is the same as the rest of the district. The only difference is that students learn in two languages. So, you can see that the program is academically challenging on top of the enrichment experience that students receive from learning in two languages.

This program is available at Beebe, Elmwood, Mill Street, and Steeple Run elementary schools for students that live within those boundaries. River Woods elementary school serves as a magnet site for students who live within the boundaries of any other District 203 school. The Dual Language program goes through Jr. High School and all Dual Language students attend Jefferson Jr. High.

Students then attend their home High School where they will have opportunities to take advanced level Spanish courses.

As you see, the language allocation for Spanish and English changes as students go up in grade level, with Kindergarten and 1st grade at 80% of instruction in Spanish and 20% in English and gradually shifting towards 50% Spanish and 50% English in 4th and 5th grade. The reason we start at 80% Spanish is that for about half of our students, school is the only place where they would use Spanish, so the higher percentage of time using Spanish in school is what creates the immersion experience. Research also tells us that, for our students who speak Spanish at home and enter the program as English Learners, building a solid foundation in Spanish during Kindergarten and 1st grade and then supporting growth in Spanish as well as English in 2nd through 5th grade gives students the chance to become equally proficient in both languages.

In 6th grade, Dual Language students take one period of Language Arts in Spanish and one period in English. They also take Social Studies in Spanish. They are mixed in with other six graders for all other content areas so they have two periods of instruction in Spanish and 7 periods in English.

In 7th and 8th grade, all students are given the option to select an elective course in either Fine Arts and Science or World Language, which is French or Spanish. Since 7th and 8th grade Spanish is not appropriate for Dual Language students, a Spanish Language and Culture class was created for Dual Language students who want to have a Spanish elective instead of one of the other options. Students who take this course have an additional period of instruction in Spanish where they study aspects of culture and language from various Spanish speaking countries.

The Dual Language program ends at 8th grade, and students who have completed the program through 8th grade are eligible to take advanced Spanish courses through the World and Classical Languages Department at their home high school.

The Spanish Language and Culture course for Spanish speakers was specially designed for students who have completed the Dual Language Program and is the recommended Spanish course for 9th grade in High School. After that, students have some flexibility in their Spanish language pathway, and we have listed some of the options here on this slide. We encourage students to work with their Spanish teacher and counselor to select their next course.

Most likely, you are already aware of some of the benefits of being bilingual; which is why you are interested in having your child be part of the program. The benefits of becoming bilingual through our dual language program are that the students learn to speak, listen, read and write in two languages when they are also learning other academic content. They have authentic reasons to use both languages to communicate with each other as well as to learn and share information. Because they are learning to work with each other in two languages, and they are also learning about world views, they are better prepared for the global workforce.

We’ve heard it said that people who are fluent in both English and Spanish can communicate with 80% of the world.

Another benefit of students being bilingual is the benefit to their brains. Students develop increased metacognitive skills, metalinguistic skills and cognitive flexibility.

What this means is that when students learn in two languages, they learn that there is more than one way to express a thought or feeling. They learn that there is more than one way to approach solving a problem.

Dual Language students who qualify for honors Math in 3rd grade, may participate in that program. Students in honors math leave their classrooms during Math instruction to receive honors Math instruction. The language allocation for Math instruction is English in 3rd grade and up so that students may participate without losing opportunities to learn Spanish.

In Dual Language, students may also qualify for the PI program which focuses on Reading in English but they are not able to participate in that program and stay in Dual Language. We have tried to make the two programs compatible, but we found that it is not possible for students to participate in PI without losing Spanish language arts instruction. The good news is that the Dual Language Program is designed as a language enrichment program. We know from what we see in our District that Dual Language students do qualify for Honors English in High School and have been successful in Honors English without participating in PI in elementary or Jr. High School.

So what do we mean when we say that Dual Language is a language enrichment program? Well, Dual Language students learn at an early age to use language at a higher level, for example, we teach students how to read in Spanish and then transfer the skills into English, so if students know the sound that the letter M makes in Spanish, they know the sound in English! There is no need to reteach the sound.

We just show students that they are the same. However, the vowel sounds are different, so we teach them the difference in the sounds based on the language and the context. This is one way in which students develop metalinguistic skills. As you see on this slide, 58% of English words come from Latin roots and Spanish is derived from Latin, so learning Spanish also helps students to understand high levels of academic English vocabulary. For example, kindergarteners know that the word for sun is sol in Spanish, so when they encounter the word ‘solar’, they know it has to do with the sun. Similarly, the word for referee in Spanish is árbitro, a word children learn from playing and watching sports. In English, the word arbitration is a word that students wouldn’t encounter until they are much older, maybe not even until college. If we look at ‘cien’, which means hundred in Spanish, and think about the word cent, and century, you can clearly see the connection. This makes it that much easier for students to know that there are one hundred cents in a dollar.

Siblings receive priority in placement as long as they are fully enrolled by the online enrollment due date, April 9, 2021. If you have not completed the process for your incoming kindergartener, please complete it by April 9, 2021 We cannot guarantee placement after that date. The lottery will take place after all the enrollments have been verified and an email will be sent out on Thursday, April 14, 2021 to let you know if your child is offered a place in the program, or if your child is on the waitlist.
