Distance Education makes new methods of teaching and learning possible through excellence and leadership. • The LMS (Learning Management System) known as Canvas went live in the fall of 2016. Since it’s official debut in Spring 2017, Distance Education, led by María Villagómez, has made exceptional strides utilizing online technology for distance learning. • Awarded 2019’s Latina of Influence by HispanicLifestyle.com, María Villagómez is nationally recognized as a community leader, and an advocate for human rights through education.

Canvas allows us to meet the needs of more students. • Canvas, a multi-purpose platform, with more variety than its predecessors. This means that it provides additional modes of learning essential to a broader spectrum of students. • As DE Faculty Mentor, Cathy Gillis is our pedagogy expert for Canvas, which now lives in nearly every classroom on campus. A big change compared to educational software in the past, which was only fit for online classrooms. • Cathy Gillis is no stranger to Distance Education, and produced some of NVC’s first online video tutorials. She serves on an impressive number of boards and committees including Phi theta Kappa and the Napa County Hispanic Network. She has coordinating and training experience in English and Online Education, and has served the community as writer for the Napa Valley Register. Cathy Gillis (above) speaks at NVC’s Student Scholarship Awards.
