Welcome to the fall 2019 semester! The Napa Valley College McCarthy Library staff welcomes you to a new semester. We want you to enjoy a pleasant experience in our Library.

We are very excited to share with you that our Library will have new computers this semester for our students to enjoy! This is a service that our students can enjoy free of cost.

As a reminder, the McCarthy Library offers printing services for students at a very low cost.

Additionally, we offer:

· Quiet study rooms are available for small student groups · Our faculty and staff are happy to offer tours of the Library by appointment · New! Multifunction charger plugs for any device and battery chargers to check out while students enjoy quite study time · Calculator rentals · We have bilingual staff (English, Spanish, Chinese and Thai) at the circulation desk that can assist you.

This year, the McCarthy Library will display various exhibits highlighting and honoring various cultures. Our first display, focuses on welcoming returning and new students! Please check it out when you have a moment. It showcases a comprehensive list of our Library Services. Our Library Staff worked diligently on it over the summer. Happy Reading!

Library Services & Resources from Faculty Librarians Through the Library’s Online Catalog, Polaris, students can access over 500,000 books and materials. Napa Valley College is part of a group of libraries in Napa County, and also Solano College, who share their collections. All books and materials can be checked out for 21 days at a time and items renew automatically. All students need is a library card from either the McCarthy Library at NVC, a Solano College Library card, or a Napa County Library card.

Link+ is an even larger consortium of libraries in California and Nevada with as a combined catalog of over 11 million books from 60 libraries. Students can order books and they will be delivered by courier to Napa Valley College Library. The service is free.

The McCarthy Library subscribes to over 40 databases which contain fulltext articles on a myriad of topics. Databases are available 24/7 and can be accessed by students, faculty and staff by using their WebAdvisor username and password.

Libguides are created by McCarthy Library’s librarians to help students find relevant and current information on specific disciplines (i.e. Art History, Zoology, U.S. History, etc.) or on specific topics or books for classes (i.e. "To Build of Fire" by Jack London. Library resources. English 120 Dr. Dunkle, English 120 "And the Shadows Took Him" Professor Cathy Gillis).

Library Workshops are offered on various topics (See page 6) to assist students in their classes. Classes include research techniques, note-taking and study skills. Students can sign up online to reserve a space. Check it out!

Individualized meetings with a librarian are available to assist students with their research. Appointments can be made ONLINE. Use your WebAdvisor username and password when prompted to access the request form.

Classroom Instruction from a Librarian is available by request from NVC faculty. Librarians can tailor their instruction to meet specific information/ research needs of students in the classroom. Sessions are available in 50 minute formats but can be adjusted to be shorter or longer, as needed.

The McCarthy Library Circulation Desk Staff

The Circulation Desk is vital to the everyday workings of the library. Staff process materials and books making them available for easy check-out. Often, the Circulation Desk is the first place students come in order to get general information , computer and printing support as well as redirection to other library services.

We are very fortunate to have such a talented and dedicated staff.

Learn how to use the Polaris Online Library System (POLS) and LINK+ to find a book and other library materials, order materials through inter-library loan, as well as gain an understanding of information sources found in the reference section of the library.

Students are introduced to general encyclopedias and subject-specific encyclopedias to gain background information as well as how to use a book index effectively.

Citing Your Sources: Sept. 30–Oct. 3 (Mon–Thurs)

Online Databases: Powerful Tools You'll Want to Know About Learn to differentiate between general databases and subject-specific databases for your information need(s). In addition, we will cover article abstracts versus full-text articles as well as the difference between scholarly and popular sources of information..

Citing Your Sources- Avoid plagiarism using these well-known methods of incorporating others' work into your own writing: direct quoting and paraphrasing. Parenthetical (in-text) citation is discussed using MLA format.

5 Best Study Strategies - Learn the five proven study strategies that every student should know and use to maximize their retention of material.

A Day in the Archives: Make History Come Alive in this workshop, to be held in the library’s special collection room, provides students the opportunity to explore the many resources that support local and California history research.

Note-Taking - In this workshop, we will break down the process of notetaking into discrete steps in order to increase your ability to capture and use your class notes most effectively.

Connecting the Dots - Discovering evidence for your research paper can be thrilling.

Learn how to trace a lead to other sources on a variety of platforms. Imagine finding a chapter in a book, moving to a scholarly journal article, then following up with a documentary film with transcript and finally nailing down the statistics on a government report.

Immunize Yourself from Fake News - Learn how to spot suspicious news stories on the web and how to use specific techniques for verifying the accuracy and truthfulness of online information.

Researching in the Sciences In this workshop, students will learn how to read and deconstruct a scientific academic article. Databases for the sciences will be explored, and a journal’s impact factor will be discussed.

To authenticate and gain access, all you need to do is enter your WebAdvisor username and password.

Faculty and Staff will use their Microsoft Outlook credentials.

Staying Informed: Free Online Subscription to the New York Times Newspaper for all Students, Faculty and Staff



The McCarthy Library is again offering a full year free online subscription to the campus community. To obtain a free account, first log-on to the New York Times at AccessNYT.com from any campus computer. You must be on a campus computer to create an account for the first time and use your campus email address (Outlook). Then, you can access the New York Times from anywhere! Test your login at www.nytimes.com.

If you need help, don’t hesitate to ask a Reference Librarian.

THE “OED” OF WINE GRAPES: FIRST EDITION OF VIALA AND VERMOREL’S AMPELOGRAPHIE, WITH 500 BEAUTIFUL CHROMOLITHOGRAPHS Donated by Dorothy Tchelistcheff

VIALA, Pierre and VERMOREL, Victor. Traite General de Viticulture: Ampélographie. Paris: Masson et Cie, 1901-1910. Seven volumes. Folio (10 by 15 inches). Each volume housed in custom burgundy cloth clamshell box.

An exceptionally ambitious undertaking, begun in 1883 and not completed until 1910, Viala’s “Ampelographie” enlisted contributions from agriculturalists and viticulturists from around the world with the aim of cataloguing and describing every variety of wine grape. Still considered the most comprehensive encyclopedia of viticulture published, well-known winemakers have recently remarked that many of the varieties shown in the chromolithographs have disappeared; this is now the only record we have of many extinct varieties of grapes.
