We are pleased to welcome María L. Villagómez as the Dean of Language Arts, Educational Support and Learning Technologies effective August 1, 2018, replacing Rebecca Scott, Dean of the LLRC, who retired from a long career at the college on July 31, 2018. María’s new consolidated role incorporates elements of her existing duties as the Dean of Instruction and Academic Support and blends them with responsibilities from the Dean of LLRC position, including responsibility for the LADS division, tutoring, and responsibility for the library through supervision of a new position that is currently under development. María will retain responsibility for Distance Education and International Education, among other duties, from the former Dean of Instruction position. Class scheduling, the college catalog, and related tasks remain with staff in the Office of Academic Affairs under Erik Shearer’s direction and supervision.

More About María ...

María has worked at Napa Valley College for the past 19 years.

She was a Professor of Spanish at NVC prior to becoming the Dean of Instruction and Academic Support in October, 2016.

María is the daughter of a single mother who worked as a farmworker to raise her family. She is the first person in her family to graduate from high school. After learning English in Napa schools, María earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Spanish as well as a master’s degree in Education. She also started her own translation and interpreting business.

María was invited to work on a series called “Nina’s World” by a producer at NBC Universal. The Napa Register featured an article about María’s work on the program in 2015 entitled “Napa Valley College Professor Lends Authenticity to TV Show”.

“Nina’s World” is about a 6-year-old Mexican-American girl, Nina, and her adventures. “The show celebrates her diverse family, traditions and community. Nina is joined by her grandmother, Abuelita, who is voiced by actress and part-time Napa resident Rita Moreno.” María used her expertise on the authentic use of the Spanish language, pronunciation and cultural accuracy to give the show it’s authenticity.

A person of many talents, we are so pleased to have María Villagómez as our new Dean!

Napa Valley College partners with Napa County Library (NCL) and Solano Community College (SCC) to bring patrons a shared catalog of library books and materials. Our Integrated Library System (ILS) is called “Polaris”. The collaboration with NCL, NVC and SCC makes over 500,000 titles available to our students, staff and faculty. In addition, LINK+ (an even larger consortium of libraries throughout the state of California and neighboring states), increases our access to books and materials exponentially. LINK+ is currently made up of over 60 academic and public libraries (CSUs, community colleges and private colleges). Eleven million items are available for our patrons to borrow through the LINK+ consortium. Simply click the LINK+ logo on the McCarthy Library home-page to learn more.

Writing & Researching Workshops This fall, 2018, the Library continues to collaborate with the Writing Success Center (WSC) to offer five sections of linked English 90 and WSC classes using our Canvas Course Management System. These resources teach discrete skills in English writing and information literacy.

Work includes opportunities for students to practice the skill being taught. At the completion of the online workshop, students are given a short assessment to see if they have understood and mastered the skill.

Students can come to the Writing Center (800 Building, Catacula Hall, Room 832) from 9am to 7pm, Monday-Thursday and Fridays 9am-Noon for in-person assistance.

New! Writing Center Staff are available to help students in person in the Library from 4-7pm on Tuesday and Thursday and from 5-7 pm Monday and Wednesday.

Running a Library takes a group of people. Staff handle the many and various duties on the technical side of the library.

They also help students to check out materials, get keys to study and media rooms, and field student inquires. Behind the scenes, they prepare materials for shelving, add bibliographic records to our Polaris Integrated Library System, order Inter-Library Loan books, and prepare periodicals and newspapers for circulation. Often, staff are the first folks patrons go to for assistance with computers, printing, and general questions. Staff also work with librarians to create library displays. There are too many additional duties to list in the space provided here, but staff rise to the challenge of helping students, staff and faculty every day, doing what it takes to keep everything running smoothly and seamlessly.

We are indeed fortunate to have such a great team here at the McCarthy Library!

Great Resources at Your Fingertips!

Find Articles on the McCarthy Library Database Page http://www.napavalley.edu/Library/

The McCarthy Library has an excellent selection of online articles from databases.

Databases can be viewed from any campus computer as well as from home.

Students use their WebAdvisor username and password to access the databases both on campus and from home.

Faculty and Staff have access to the databases using their campus log-on credentials.

If you find an article that is not full-text, we can usually get a copy of the article for you from other libraries. Don’t hesitate to ask.

Staying Informed: Free Online Subscription to the New York Times for all Students, Faculty and Staff!

The McCarthy Library is again offering a full year free online subscription to the campus community. To obtain a free account, first log-on to the New York Times at AccessNYT.com from any campus computer. You must be on a campus computer to create an account for the first time and use your campus email address (Outlook). Then you can access the New York Times from anywhere! Test your login at www.nytimes.com. If you need help, don’t hesitate to ask a Reference Librarian.
