Five Steps to Successfully Enroll as a New Student Welcome New Students! Applications for admissions to Napa Valley College (NVC) are accepted at any time for any future semester. All students must complete the Student Success and Support Program (SSSP) in order to successfully enroll at NVC. This includes orientation, assessment and an abbreviated educational plan. Students who are enrolling for personal development may complete only Steps 1 and 5: Apply for Admission and Register and Pay for Classes. Please know if you choose this option you will not earn your registration priority. You will have the lowest priority (Priority G) when registering each term.

The following steps are required for all prospective students, who wish to earn priority registration status. This is particularly important for student with goals to obtain a degree, to get a certificate or to transfer.

APPLY ONLINE FOR ADMISSION Admissions and Records, (707) 256-7200 Complete the online Application for Admission by selecting the “Enroll Now” link at www.napavalley.edu. It pays to Declare Your$elf, so please make sure to provide us your biographical/demographic information under the “Personal Information” section o f the application. Be prepared to declare a major and an educational goal

COMPLETE AN ORIENTATION This link: www.napavalley.edu/studentaffairs/Counseling/Pages/New-StudentOnline-Orientation.aspx will take you to the Napa Valley College MyNVC mini portal. Click on the Canvas Online link and you will land at the sign in page. On the right side you will sign in using your NVC username and password.

If you have problems logging in to the orientation or navigating its content please contact the Welcome Center, in person in room 1331A, by phone 707-256-7215, or by email WelcomeCenter@napavalley.edu. All students must complete an orientation regardless of educational goal or major.

COMPLETE THE ASSESSMENT PROCESS Testing and Tutoring Center, (707) 256-7434 or (707) 256-7437 www.napavalley.edu/testingandtutoringcenter Complete an assessment test in the Testing and Tutoring Center, Room 1764 in Building 1700, to determine the course placements for English and Math classes. No appointment is necessary. Call office or check website for drop-in hours. You must have applied for admission to NVC at least 24 hours prior to testing and bring a picture ID.

ATTEND A COUNSELING/ADVISING (Ed Planning) SESSION General Counseling Center, (707) 256-7220 www.napavalley.edu/counseling All new students must complete an abbreviated (one semester) Ed Plan. New students must declare a major by the completion of 15 units and develop a Comprehensive Education Plan by 30 units. Check Counseling website for drop-in hours.

REGISTER AND PAY FOR CLASSES www.napavalley.edu/webadvisor Complete class registration online through WebAdvisor, available up to midnight before the first day of classes. All students register according to their A-G priority registration date. Once the class has started, students will need an Add Code from the instructor to register. Late start classes have different registration dates. Please refer to the Admissions and Records calendar on the Admissions and Records website (www.napavalley.edu/admissions).

Part 2: Create a CCCApply Account You will need to create a username and password for CCCApply. Be prepared to provide the following information: name, date of birth, home/mailing address, email, phone number and social security number (optional).

Orientation The online student orientation is a self-paced course that takes approximately 40 minutes to complete. It does not have to be completed in one sitting. You can stop, come back and pick up where you last left off. Please allow 24hrs for processing.

How to Access the Online Orientation First, you will need to create a password in WebAdvisor. You will be able to access the online orientation by logging into Canvas.

Step 1: Log into

Your date of birth in six-digit format: two numbers for the day, two numbers for the month and two numbers for the year (example: March 1, 1998 = 030198).

3) Your password will expire and you will be prompted to create a new password. Note that your old password is the temporary password.

4) Your “New Password� needs to contain 6 to 9 characters (no dashes, no spaces), and must contain both letters and numbers (examples: bho1961 OR 2010NVC).

CANVAS User ID Your User ID (email) is the same as your WebAdvisor User Id followed by @student.napavalley.edu (example: jdoe12345@student.napavalley.edu)

Password Your password is the one you created for WebAdvisor.

Step 1: From the WebAdvisor Main Menu, click the "I Do Not Know My WebAdvisor Password" hyperlink.

Step 2: Click the hyperlink that says "I don't remember, reset my password" Step 3: Type in your last name AND your Student ID OR your Social Security Number Step 4: Select an e-mail to have your temporary password sent to.

Step 5: Once you receive the temporary password, return to the WebAdvisor Main Menu and click the Log In tab at the top of the page.

Step 6: Type in your username and temporary password you received in the e-mail.

The password is case sensitive so make sure to type it exactly as it appears.

Step 7: You will now be asked to create a new password. Keep in mind that the "Old Password" is the temporary password you received. Your new password must be 6 to 9 characters (no dashes, no spaces), and must contain both letters and numbers (examples: bho1961 OR 2010NVC).

Retakes Each test can be taken twice in two years, with a two week waiting period between attempts.

The English assessment test can be taken twice in two years and the math assessment tests can be taken twice in one year. You must wait two weeks before retaking the same test.

Advising Session (Ed-Planning) Abbreviated Ed Plan All new students must complete an abbreviated Ed Plan. Counselors will assist students with the selection of their first semester, based on their academic goal and assessment results to the advising session.

Provide students with a comprehensive assessment, including academic strengths and needs, to assist them with class selection.

Help students clarify their academic goals, select a major, and develop realistic academic work loads. Provide information on occupational and transfer programs, including general education and major course requirements. Help students develop educational plans that satisfy graduation and transfer requirements. Offer workshops on special career topics, such as nursing, teaching, and engineering. Provide activities and services that will assist students as they move to a four-year institution. Napa Valley College counselors are dedicated to student success.

Career Counseling Provide students with an assessment of skills, abilities, interests, work values, and personality style. Provide information on current and future employment trends. Help students develop effective models for making career decisions and setting goals. Provide instruction in job search techniques. Teach classes that emphasize career exploration and college success.

Personal Counseling/Crisis Intervention Provide short-term counseling and refer students to appropriate community resources. Assist students with personal, family, and other issues that may affect their educational progress. Offer support to students with a respect and understanding for their backgrounds, cultural values, gender, communication styles, abilities, and limitations.

Steps to submit an online payment Tuition Payment is due within 7 days of registration. You may be at risk of being dropped from your course for non-payment. It is the students responsibility to check if they have been dropped from a class. Check your Schedule on WebAdvisor to make sure you are registered.

FINANCIAL AID/EOPS/CARE/CalWORKs/VETERANS’ SERVICES Financial Aid offers a variety of financial assistance programs including grants, loans, scholarships, and work study opportunities for students who are having a difficult time meeting the cost of attending Napa Valley College. All students are urged to apply for financial assistance by submitting the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), or the CA Dream Act Application.

EOPS (Extended Opportunity Programs and Services) is a state-funded program which offers one -on-one academic counseling, priority registration, transfer assistance, tutoring services, financial assistance with books, opportunities to attend fieldtrips to UCs and CSUs, and many other services for eligible students.

CARE (Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education) is a supplemental component of EOPS that offers additional support for single heads of welfare households with young children.

CalWORKs (California Work Opportunities and Responsibility for Kids) Program assists welfare recipient students and those in transition off of welfare to achieve long-term self-sufficiency through coordinated student services including: work study, job placement, academic, personal and career counseling, transfer assistance, on campus child care referral, coordination, and referral to supportive services on and off campus.

VETERANS SERVICES - NVC is approved as a degree institution for veterans and eligible dependents seeking educational and/or vocational training under Title 38, United States Code.

HEALTH CENTER/POLICE DEPARTMENT The Heath Center provides health care and psychological services for students; including, but not limited to: first aid, health education, physical exams, prescriptions, contraception, pregnancy testing, smoking cessation, immunizations, mental health/ psychological services, and violence support services. The Health Center is staffed with a Nurse Practitioner and a Therapist.

The College Police Department’s role is to maintain crime prevention and service as a primary goal.

They offer a comprehensive alert system, NVC Communicate, to relay important information to students via text, email, and social media. The Police Department staff is available for escorting students to and from their classes if students should ever feel unsafe. They also manage any lost or found items on campus and occasionally offer self-defense classes to students.

CASHIER OFFICE The Cashier Office staff assists students with their campus fee-related activities; such as tuition fees, parking fees, student ID card fees, and any college-related refunds.

OFFICE OF STUDENT LIFE /ASNVC (Associated Students of Napa Valley College) The mission of Student Life/ASNVC is to support the development of the whole student by providing opportunities to connect and learn from other students, faculty, and staff through serving in student government, being part of a campus club or committee, or attending an event or conference on campus. This office also issues student ID cards, offers assistance with local housing opportunities, has an emergency food pantry available for students who can’t afford meals during lunchtime, and provides charging stations for students’ phones or other electronic devices.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER (CDC) The CDC offers subsidized and non-subsidized services to children of student parents. The age group served is 3 months to 5 years old. The staff provides a developmentally safe and nurturing environment which promotes the social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and language development of you children while responding to the needs of their families.

PUENTE PROGRAM

The Puente Project is an academic preparation program whose mission is to increase the number of educationally disadvantaged students who: enroll in four-year colleges, earn college degrees, and return to the community as mentors and leaders for future generations.

The one-year program at Napa Valley College begins with English 90 and Counseling 100 in the fall semester and resumes in the spring semester with English 120 and Counseling 105. The Puente approach is unique in that the reading is focused on Latino and Mexican-American literature, essays, and cultural writings in both the fall and spring semester classes. This program is open to all students.

UMOJA LEARNING COMMUNITY

Programs

UMOJA (Ooo-moe-juh -- a Kiswahili word meaning unity) is a community and critical resource dedicated to enhancing the cultural and educational experiences of African American and other students. This community seeks to educate the whole student - mind, body, and spirit. The education focuses on the voices and histories of African American cultures. Students have access to an Umoja Counselor.

MESA (Math, Engineering, & Science Achievement) MESA is an academic preparation program that assists students to succeed in math, science, and engineering so they can transfer to four-year colleges or universities and attain four-year degrees in math, engineering, and science fields. Services include: academic planning and workshops, study skills & learning techniques, field trips to university campuses and industry sites, student study center, & career advising. Specific qualifications required.

SSS/TriO (Student Support Services) SSS/TRIO is a federally-funded program that serves first-generation, income-eligible students who intend to complete a degree or certificate program at NVC and transfer to a four-year institution.
