Music for Europe Composition commissioned by Ensemble Adapter and funded by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation Premiered on 26. November 2016 at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival Duration ca 20’

Transposing score Instrumentation Flute / Alto Flute Clarinet in B flat Percussion : Vibraphone, Crotales, Glockenspiel, Cymbal, a plank of smooth wood/tile with fine sandpaper Piano : prepared with three rivets before the piece begins* ,with additional sounds made on a plank of smooth wood/tile with fine sandpaper (same as percussion) Harp (prepared with hairclips during the piece) * *both piano and harp prepare the following strings

The position of both hairclips and rivets are not exact, but should be not far behind the frame on the piano and towards the bridge on the harp:

Paul Klee (1916) High and radiant is the moon. I blew out my lamp, and thousands of thoughts rise up from the bottom of my heart.

My eyes overflow with tears.

Paul Klee created a text-painting using these words a hundred years ago, the year he was conscripted into, though never fought for, the German army. I saw this painting just days after the UK voted to leave the European Union. I was touched by it’s simple, fragile vulnerability made at a deeply fractured time.
