Chicago Multi-Cultural Center
PROJECT DESCRIPTION It is common that people are only exposed to American culture and aren’t well educated about others, causing them to be out of touch and often unintentionally racist. Sometimes this leads to people assuming their race is superior. Almost 50% of hate crimes in America are racially motivated (The Importance of Cultural Sensitivity and Awareness). An opportunity to combat this problem is a multi-cultural center that glorifies aspects like food and art of multiple societies. The center would also provide subconscious and intentional education about these cultures.
GENERAL NOTES
With the protests that happened recently, some people are trying to include and appreciate minority cultures more and this center is a great way to do that. The goal of this center is to educate and expose Americans, by having them do hands-on activities and classes to show Americans that other cultures are beautiful and our exposure to them is just as important as our exposure to the American way of life. This center will also be an opportunity for families to come together and participate in activities with the community. I hope to solve the problem by enlightening Americans about other cultures and their styles through activities, which in return, would increase cultural sensitivity and create more of an appreciation for minorities.
