Welcome to Nantucket!

Whether you’re here for a day trip or an extended stay, we recommend you shift into “island time”, which is more of a mindset than a setting on the clock. In this guide, you will find a great starting point to creating your unique Nantucket experience.

Rounding Brant Point and stepping off the boat into our historic downtown area, you’ll find amazing shops, mouth-watering bites, and relaxing accommodations. We encourage you to get outside of town to explore the rest of the island too. Our small business community has been growing steadily, with many exciting shops, markets, and restaurants found mid-island and beyond. With miles of bike and walking paths crisscrossing Nantucket, unplug and take in the natural beauty of the island on a trail. Consider leaving your car on the mainland during your next trip. There are plenty of cabs and ride share options, and our local WAVE bus system is fare-free this summer, so you can leave the driving to someone else and have a truly relaxing vacation.

We are also calling on all visitors to help us keep Nantucket beautiful for years to come. While our community has adopted regulations to reduce plastic waste and encourage recycling, it all comes down to you. Remember to recycle or properly dispose of any trash, and keep to designated trails and beaches to protect our environment.

About Our Chamber

Founded in 1934 and incorporated in 1954, the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce is the primary organization dedicated to promoting the interests of the island business community. Currently, the Chamber boasts over 750 business, nonprofit and individual members, and enhancing its membership ranks remains a critical endeavor. The ongoing viability and vitality of the historical, cultural, civic, environmental and recreational features that position our island as a premier tourist destination and a unique year-round venue for its community are also paramount. Nantucket Memorial Airport is the second-busiest commercial airport in Massachusetts after Logan International and operates year-round. From New York City: Approximately 270 miles. Follow Route 95 to Providence, RI; Route 195 to Wareham, MA; Route 25 to Bourne Bridge; Route 6 to Exit #6; Route 132 into Hyannis. Follow signs to airport or docks. Approximately 4 to 5 hours, depending on traffic.

From Boston: Approximately 80 miles. Follow Route 3 (Southeast Expressway); Route 6 over the Sagamore Bridge; Route 132 into Hyannis; follow signs to airport or docks. Approximately 1.5 hours, depending on traffic.

THE WAVE YEAR ROUND!

The NRTA schedules its routes and travel times up to a year in advance. The 2024 Rider’s Guide represents the desired level of service that we typically provide to the community. Published services are subject to change without notice; however, updates are provided at www.nrtawave. com, on all buses, and at the Greenhound Building.

Year-round-Service will operate January 1–May 11 and October 15–December 31, on the Mid-Island Loop, Miacomet Loop, and Sconset via Old South Road Weekly service will operate 7am-9pm daily.

Summer Service will operate May 12–October 14. Hours of service and frequency vary depending on the route. The Mid-Island Loop, Miacomet Loop, and Sconset via Old South Road Route operate daily from 7am–11:30pm. Mid-June to Labor Day service will be provided until midnight. Madaket Route will operate end of May to mid-September. Service is provided daily mid-June through Labor Day on the Sconset via Milestone Road Route from 7:15am–7:15pm. Service is provided daily midJune through Labor Day 10am–6pm on the Jetties and Surfside Beach Routes, Sconset via Polpis Road Route. Airport Route from 7:00 am–8:00 pm.

General Information: Fares: Are all FREE from April 1–September 30, 2024. Stops are conveniently located along all loops/routes and are designated by grey posts with blue stripes. Free Park and Ride Lots are available along the Mid-Island and Miacomet Loops. All buses are equipped to accommodate 2 standard bicycles on a first-come firstserve basis. All buses are accessible to persons with disabilities. Your Island Ride provides ADA complementary paratransit service. To schedule a ride, call 508-325-5113 option 1.

To speak to a dispatcher, call Monday through Friday 8am–4pm. Pets and trained service animals are permitted aboard all vehicles but must be under control of the passenger at all times. History

Nantucket’s rich history – from a sleepy 17th-century farming community to its centenary reign as whaling capital of the world, to its current incarnation as an art and resort colony – is replete with many facets that contribute to its inimitable charm. This charm is owed, at least in part, to the ongoing – and fiercely dedicated – conservancy of its remarkable resources, both natural and built.

The island is fortunate to boast some of the finest 18th and early 19th-century architecture in the nation. Its historic core was proclaimed a National Historic Landmark in 1966, a designation extended to the entire island in 1971. Since 1955, the Nantucket Historic District Commission has regulated the exterior appearance of new construction as well as changes made to existing structures throughout the island in an effort to safeguard Nantucket’s historical integrity. Thanks to the stringent efforts of the Conservation Foundation and Land Bank, acres of conservation land remain untamed, evidenced by glorious open vistas like the Serengeti-like Middle Moors bordering the Milestone Road.

Testimony to Nantucket’s commitment to the preservation of arts and culture – both architecturally and in practice – 18 historic structures in the Core area of Downtown alone continue to function as museums and galleries, as well as venues for theater, music, learning and research, and culinary pursuits. Six of the buildings house theaters, a box office and art gallery. Six are places of worship, including Unitarian, Catholic, Episcopal, Quaker, Congregational and Methodist denominations. There’s also an Aquarium, a Whaling Museum – accredited by the American Association of Museums – and the Atheneum, our island library. All lie within an easily walkable range of 28 short blocks! NANTUCKET HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION’S WHALING MUSEUM, 13 BROAD STREET

The Nantucket Whaling Museum and NHA historic properties depict the island’s transformation from a 17th-century farming community to whaling capital of the world, to a 20th-century art and resort colony. NHA’S FIRE HOSE CART HOUSE, 8 GARDNER STREET

NHA’S QUAKER MEETING HOUSE & RESEARCH

LIBRARY,

Constructed in 1838, this is one of the island’s last surviving Quaker Meeting Houses, open daily May 23-October 18. The NHA Research Library houses an array of books, letters, whaling log books, maps, genealogical materials and 100,000 manuscripts and photographs. Open year-round. www. NHA .org

NHA’S HADWEN HOUSE, 96 MAIN STREET

The Hadwen House is a Greek Revival mansion built in 1846 by whaling merchant and silver retailer William Hadwen at the peak of Nantucket’s prosperity as the whaling capital of the world. NHA’S THOMAS MACY HOUSE, 99 MAIN STREET

Built circa 1800, Eunice Coffin Macy and her husband, Thomas Macy, inherited this 18th- century home in 1832. It would establish the Macys as one of the leading families in the neighborhood. Visit www.NHA.org for hours and info.

NANTUCKET ATHENEUM, 1 INDIA STREET

AFRICAN MEETING HOUSE, 27 & 29 YORK STREET AT FIVE CORNERS

A National Historic Landmark built circa 1820s, one of the oldest Black church buildings in the nation functioned as a church, school for African children, and social center for the New Guinea community. Established in 1834, and becoming a public library in 1900, the Atheneum serves as a cultural and educational hub for the island. Free library cards provide access to millions of books, films and other materials through its partnerships with other Cape and Island libraries. In addition to housing the stacks, the historic 1846 building also contains 19th century maritime art and artifacts and provides quiet space, free Wi-Fi, and public computers. EGAN MARITIME INSTITUTE: NANTUCKET SHIPWRECK & LIFESAVING MUSEUM, 158 POLPIS ROAD

The nation’s first museum dedicated to preserving and sharing the remarkable story of lifesaving, the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum is located on beautiful Folger’s Marsh off of Polpis Road. Immerse yourself in the island’s shipwreck and rescue history with tales of grit and determination during a time of service and sacrifice that embodies the heroic people of Nantucket. Family-friendly programs, outdoor play areas for young patrons, and a scenic picnic area are open to all. Free seasonal van shuttle from Visitors Services on Federal Street. NISDA’S SEAVIEW FARM DAIRY BARN, 23 WAUWINET ROAD

The Nantucket Island School of Design & the Arts (NISDA) Seaview Farm also known as Eat Fire Spring Farm’s Dairy Barn, is the last standing example of 1800’s architectural farm structure on Nantucket. In collaboration with the NPT and the Community Preservation Committee, NISDA has protected, structurally and visually restored Seaview Farm for future generations. NISDA’s two standing silos are adjacent to the Dairy Barn where the cows were milked and the Heifer Barn where the calves were born. They provided storage for grain feed and are the last silos standing on Nantucket. Visit www.nisda.org

NISDA’S LONG SHED BARN, 23 WAUWINET ROAD

NISDA’s Long Shed Barn, 105’ x 45’, has expansive ground to ceiling sliding doors which accommodated the working Dairy Farm need for extensive machinery and storage. It has been fully and historically restored and repurposed as NISDA’s Open Air Ceramic Studio. Eat Fire Spring runs behind the Long Shed. It emerges on the Land Bank property and is accessible to the community. Hence the reason Seaview Farm was also known as Eat Fire Spring Farm. NISDA’S HEIFER BARN, 23 WAUWINET ROAD

NISDA’s Seaview Farm Heifer Barn is where the calves were birthed. The Heifer Barn when built in the 1950’s was near the Dairy Barn and next to the second silo. In 1970 it was moved next door, to the Farmer’s house and repurposed as a Quilting Studio. In 2022 upon the Land Bank purchasing and becoming NISDA’s next door neighbor, the Heifer was gifted back to NISDA and moved to its original site. The Heifer Barn has returned home to NISDA’s Seaview Farm! For information on Arts Programs visit www.nisda.org

NISDA’s Art Center Dairy Barn, Heifer Barn and Long Shed Ceramics Studio are home to painting, textiles, photography, a black & white darkroom, design studios, the Silo Gallery, community lectures, workshop spaces, a small art library, and Meadow Pavilion that provide a welcoming “Place just right” to learn, create and enjoy the simplicity of uplifting creativity and community!

NISDA’s Arts Programs and Cultural Lecture Series explore the inter-relationships between the Arts, Sciences, Humanities and Environment, the Arts as Conveyor of Human Spirit, Values, Courage, Ingenuity and Arts Stewardship towards celebrating our common humanity.

NISDA experiences seek to reveal a connection between our inherent creativity and ideas, arts and crafts techniques. Classes begin in NISDA studios and often launch into Nantucket’s land and seascapes for inspiration.

NISDA’s Wauwinet Campus is comprised of Seaview Farm Art Center where Arts Programs take place and nearby Offshore Artist Residency (OAR) where NISDA Lecturers, Faculty and National & International Artist Residents create in their studio and the Nantucket Landscape.

Participants in NISDA’s programs learn arts and crafts techniques, explore finding their own voice and discover the excitement of ideas and experiencing creative process. NISDA offerings evolve and engage with the Island Community. The Nantucket Literacy Center met and this year teachers from NHS are living at the Artist Residencies . NISDA taught “Start with Art” at the Middle school in 1973: facilitating and creating enjoyable thinking skills for socially challenged elementary students. A Cultural Curriculum in the 1980’s integrated mandated

curriculum with the arts, music and physical education, and is focused on Japan, Russia, South America and Cape Verde.

The spirit of NISDA’s Summer 2024 Young Artist Studio is hands-on fun experiences exploring Historical and Contemporary Master Artists from America and around the world. Family & Friends Generations Together celebrates Nantucket’s arts, crafts, stories, music and dance of our historic Wampanogs, and our immigrant neighbors from Asia, South America, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa.

NISDA’s Programs are design to accommodate visitors, year-round and seasonal residents. Artist Residencies, Open Studios, College Cooperative programs, Professional Institutes, Seminars and Workshops, Young Artists, Generations Together, welcome seasoned artists and beginning students and teens.

NISDA founded in 1978, a natural evolution of a RISD Art-in-Environment off campus College Summer Program designed and established 1975 on Nantucket by islander, Kathy Kelm then Assistant Professor at RISD. NISDA founding members were Kathy Kelm, Larry Cronin, Seymour Berman and Tony Thompson

NORTH SHORE

1 Jetties Beach

Easy bike ride from town. NRTA shuttle service is available (summer only). Great for families: changing rooms, playground, public tennis courts, and a boardwalk to the beach. Windsurfing, sailboat, and kayak lessons and rentals available. Beach-accessible wheelchairs also available.

2 Brant Point

Easy walk or bike ride. No lifeguard. Scenic beach beside Brant Point Lighthouse; a pleasant spot to sit and watch the boats rounding the Point. Strong current - experienced swimmers only.

3 Children’s Beach

On the harbor, an easy walk from town. Ideal for small children: park, playground, picnic tables and bandstand. T-shirt tie-dying sponsored by Nantucket Park & Recreation Commission –Fridays at noon, mid-July through August. Enjoy free G-rated movies Friday nights at dusk. Free concerts 6:00 - 7:15 p.m. on Sundays.

4 Dionis

Three miles by bike from town. Sheltered by dunes; calm waters for swimming; safe for children.

5 Francis Street Beach

Five-minute walk from Main Street. Calm harbor waters for wading; no lifeguard. Turtle climb, kayak rentals.

SOUTH SHORE

6 Surfside

Located at the end of Surfside Road, a 2.2-mile ride on paved bike path or via NRTA shuttle bus (summer only). Good beach for families: picnics, kite flying, beach games, and surfcasting after 5 p.m. Beach-accessible wheelchairs also available. Surf can be heavy.

7 Miacomet

Located at the end of Miacomet Road, a 2.5 mile bike ride from town. Heavy surf.

8 Cisco

Four-mile bike ride to the end of Hummock Pond Road. Surf School available. Heavy surf.

9 Madaket

As far west as you can go. Regular NRTA shuttle bus service or 5.5-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path. Food available nearby. Famous for viewing sunsets. Heavy surf.

EASTERN SHORE

10 Siasconset

Regular shuttle service, or 6-mile ride on paved bike path. Food and restrooms are available in nearby village of ’Sconset. Surf can be heavy.

There is no charge to access any public beach. For any questions regarding lifeguards or beaches, please call the Police Department non-emergency line at 508-228-1212.

Activities

With over 80 miles of pristine beaches, Nantucket is perfect for beachgoers. From the gentle waters of Children’s Beach, Jetties, and Dionis on the North Shore to the stronger waves of Surfside, Miacomet, Cisco, and Madaket on the South Shore you’ll find the perfect venue tailored to small children, families, surfers, and experienced swimmers.

Beachcombers will be delighted to discover a variety of shells, unique stones, beach glass, and “mermaid’s purses.” Windsurfing, kayaking, and sailing lessons are available at Jetties Beach, and surfing lessons are offered at Cisco Beach. Nautical pursuits are plentiful and varied, with fishing and sailing charters, and boat rentals rounding out the mix. In season, the “Wave” bus conveniently shuttles passengers to both Jetties and Surfside beaches.

Twelve well-designated bicycle paths (32 scenic miles) ranging from 0.3 to 9 miles in length crisscross the island, making this “green” form of transportation an ideal way for all ages to explore our diminutive spit of sand and actively contribute to limiting vehicle traffic during the busy summer months. Public tennis and golf courses await professionals and novices alike. Disc golf is a fun and unique family activity, both easy to learn and free to play.

A haven for naturalists, Nantucket boasts a bevy of rare flora and fauna, as well as a host of unique animal species. Maria Mitchell Association offers nature and wildflower walks and birding field trips during the warmer months, as well as a Discovery Program introducing youngsters to the delights and wonders of the natural world. Murray Camp, Nantucket Community School, and Nantucket Island School of Design & the Arts (NISDA) also offer diverse camp experiences for all age groups.

Bus, van, and walking tours provide a fantastic insight into the island’s rich and varied history,or a self-guided walking tour of Nantucket’s preserved architectural gems allows you to meander at your own pace. (Pick up a Nantucket Historic Walking Tour pamphlet at the Chamber of Commerce or Visitor Services office.) Tours devoted to birding, biking, brewery, clamming, photography, and sightseeing are also available.

Fishing & Shellfish Regulations

The Nantucket Police Department at 4 Fairgrounds Road is responsible for issuing all commercial and non-commercial permits for shellfishing. The resident/property owner (proof required) permit is $35 and the non-resident permit is $125. Both are for individuals over the age of 14. Free for retired scallopers and residents over 60. For information regarding shellfishing, please call the Natural Resources Department at 508-228-7230. For your convenience, the Chamber of Commerce website www.nantucketchamber.org offers a link to the MA Division of Marine Fisheries site which contains helpful information about regulations and permits for both commercial and recreational fishing.

BAY SCALLOPS: Closed season, April 1October 1; recreational season (WednesdaySunday only) October 1 - March 31; commercial season, November 1 - March 31, Monday-Friday. Permit required; recreational limit is one bushel per week. Scallops must have a well-defined raised growth ring.

BLUE CLAW CRABS:

Open season; no permit required unless using traps. Return egg-bearing females. Minimum size is 5-inch shell width, spine to spine. Limit 25 crabs daily per person. Season closed January 1 - April 30.

EELS: Open season; permit required. Eels are found in harbors and creeks during spring and fall.

MUSSELS: Open season; permit required. Limit one bushel per week.

OYSTERS: Year Around. Permit required. Limit one half-bushel per week. Oysters must be 3 inches in size.

QUAHOGS: Open season; permit required. Limit one half-bushel per week. Quahog shell must be 1 inch thick at the hinge.

SOFT SHELF CLAMS: Closed season, June 15 - September 15; recreational season (Sundays only) September 15 - June 14. Permit required. Limit one 10-quart pail per week. Steamer shell must be 2 inches in size.

STRIPED BASS / BLUEFISH: The state requires any resident or non-resident over the age of 16 to purchase a fishing permit to fish from the beach or a boat. Biking Routes

One of the best ways to tour Nantucket is by bicycle. The island is only 14 miles long by 3.5 miles wide with over 32 miles of bike paths. A dedicated cyclist can bike around the entire island in a day. Visit www.wheelsheelsandpedals.com for more information on biking and walking Nantucket.

1 SURFSIDE BIKE PATH: Approximately 2.2 miles along flat terrain. This path begins at Atlantic Avenue and Vesper Lane and ends at Surfside Beach.

2 MILESTONE BIKE PATH: Approximately 6 miles with gentle hills. This path begins at Milestone Rotary and leads to ’Sconset.

3 CLIFF ROAD BIKE PATH: Approximately 1.2 miles with rolling terrain. This path begins at Sherburne Turnpike and continues along Cliff Road to the Madaket Bike Path.

4 EEL POINT/DIONIS BEACH BIKE PATH:

Approximately 0.9 miles with gentle hills. This path connects the Cliff Road/Madaket bike paths to Dionis Beach.

5 OLD SOUTH ROAD BIKE PATH:

Approximately 1.5 miles through some open space and residential areas. This path begins at the Milestone Rotary and ends at Airport Road. Approximately 0.2 miles from the Nantucket Memorial Airport.

6 MADAKET BIKE PATH: Approximately 5.5 miles with gentle hills and winding terrain. This path begins at the intersection of Quaker and Madaket roads.

7 POLPIS BIKE PATH: Approximately 8 miles with various size hills and winding terrain. This path, accessible from the Milestone Bike Path near the intersection of Milestone and Polpis roads, continues along Polpis Road to just outside ’Sconset.

8 FAIRGROUNDS ROAD BIKE PATH:

Approximately 0.9 miles along residential areas. This path connects the Old South Road and Surfside Road Bike Paths.

9 MILESTONE CONNECTOR BIKE PATH:

Approximately 0.3 miles through open space. This path connects Old South Road and Milestone Road Bike Paths.

10 NOBADEER FARM ROAD BIKE PATH:

Daffodil Festival Weekend

April 24-27, 2025

From early April to mid-May, over three million daffodils of every hue, shape and size burst forth across the island, adorning roadsides, gardens, window boxes, shops and more. The Chamber-sponsored Daffodil Festival is a rollicking celebration of spring’s arrival, featuring an Antique Car Parade & Tailgate Picnic, as well as Daffy Hat, Dog and Children’s Parades. Islanders and visitors alike rejoice in the advent of the sun’s warm rays and proliferation of our cheery “signature” bulb. Don your daffiest “chapeau,” adorn your pampered pet in Daffy-themed garb, bedeck your vintage Packard in brilliant buttery yellow, and join us in paying homage to this most festive festival flower.

The Antique Car Parade (the Festival’s central event) showcases over 110 handsomely decorated vintage automobiles and motorcycles. Staging begins on Main Street at 9:30 AM (take a “selfie” with your favorites and vote for Most Authentic, Best Decorated, People’s Choice & Best in Show) and at noon, the venerable vehicles wind through Town and perambulate out to the charming village of ‘Sconset for the Taligate Picnic. Pack a brimming basket of sustenance, bask in the sun and enjoy an al fresco lunch. You’ll want to survey the unique and elaborate repasts of Car Parade participants who compete for awards with their creatively themed picnics.

In the Downtown area, the Children’s Beach venue showcases an original performance of “Nanpuppets” to entertain kids of all ages. And don’t forget to stop by the Chamber office at 0 Main Street to pick up our Official Daffodil Calendar of Events and peruse our limited edition Daffy merchandise. The Nantucket Christmas Stroll, a cherished tradition since 1973, began as a humble initiative by local merchants to encourage islanders to remain on the island for holiday shopping, thereby keeping the local economy buoyant during the winter months. This quaint event has since blossomed into a major festival, attracting thousands of visitors each year. The Stroll is set against the picturesque backdrop of cobblestoned streets and historic buildings adorned with Christmas decorations and trees, where carolers in period costumes and bell-ringers add to the festive spirit, making it a signature Nantucket experience that encapsulates the charm and community spirit of the island.

Over the years, the Nantucket Christmas Stroll has evolved, growing in size and scope while remaining true to its roots of celebrating local culture and community. The event now features a variety of activities including craft shows, exhibitions, and special performances, expanding well beyond just shopping. Looking to the future, the Stroll is poised to continue its legacy, adapting to changing times while preserving its core identity. This balance of tradition and adaptation ensures that the Nantucket Christmas Stroll not only remains a key highlight of Nantucket’s social calendar but also contributes to the island’s cultural heritage and tourist appeal year after year.

The History of the Daffodil Festival and Nantucket Noel

The History of Island Daffodils

In 1974 Jean MacAusland, a member of the Nantucket Garden Club and seasonal resident, wanted to beautify the Island in the Spring. She chose Daffodils since Nantucket’s sandy soil is ideal for growing Daffodils and our many deer and rabbits don’t eat them. Jean’s early goal was to plant one million bulbs starting on Milestone Road leading to Sconset. She was able to create the first daffodil flower show under the guidance and approval of the American Daffodil Society, which continues annually. Visit Nantucket in the spring and see how the original plantings have naturalized and increased over time. Today the tradition of planting daffodils has been carried forward by the Nantucket Garden Club and many other organizations, individuals, and residents to insure continued daffodils in the spring for all to enjoy.

Jean MacAusland, a member of the Nantucket Garden Club and seasonal resident also with a small committee created the first parade in 1978. She owned an antique car and since she and her husband were the founders of Gourmet Magazine, the parade eventually ended with a picnic in Sconset. Thus the beginnings of the Annual Daffodil Festival which now adds Flower Crown Party, Hat Pageant, Children’s Bike Parade, Dog Parade, and Daffodil Bazaar.

The History of Nantucket Noel and Christmas Stroll

Since 1973, Nantucketers have come together to celebrate the Annual Christmas Stroll held in the Downtown Historic District. The founders of Stroll initially created this event as a means of motivating Islanders to shop locally throughout the holidays. The inaugural Stroll lasted three hours and was a great success. Shopkeepers and ‘strollers’ were entertained with lights, music, food, and an abundance of holiday sales. Thrilled with the success of the first stroll and wanting to continue to promote the support of local businesses, Nantucket decided to make Christmas Stroll an annual event; growing it from a mere three-hour event to a threeday celebration to ring in the Holiday season on the first weekend of December.

Just one year later in 1974, the annual tradition of the Lighting of the Christmas Tree kicked off Stroll weekend and marked the beginning of the Nantucket Noel Season. To truly get the island into the holiday spirit, in 1984 the Annual Red Ticket Drawing was introduced. The Red Ticket Drawing occurs on Christmas Eve, giving participants an opportunity to win great prizes. The Nantucket Chamber announces five lucky Red Ticket winners of one thousand dollars and a grand prize winner of five thousand dollars.

Now, more than four decades later, Nantucket’s Christmas Stroll has become the biggest island tradition and has expanded over the years to include events such as Tree Decorating, Storefront Decorating, and the Ugly Sweater contest. It also now includes the well-anticipated welcoming of Santa to the island. Arriving on Straight Wharf from the USCG Brant Point Station Santa greets scores of families as he makes his way down the dock. He then climbs into an antique fire truck and rides up Main Street — spreading holiday cheer — to his final destination where children can share their Christmas wishes.

Theater, live music, galleries, art classes, exhibitions, movies, lectures, and book signings - the opportunities to engage with the arts and culture on the island are numerous and diverse. Starting with a walk up Main Street you will encounter several galleries that are also shops and shops that are also galleries. It’s tough to discern the line between the two as you are surrounded by art for your walls, your shelves, and yourself. There are numerous spots downtown to buy original paintings depicting island scenes and hand woven shawls highlighting the colors of our landscapes.

Night life on the island could mean a stage production by one of the several acting troupes or gallery hopping on the docks with warm light emanating from the beckoning doorways. You can also take in a feature film downtown or choose from a wide range of live musical options in the various venues all within walking distance or a short cab ride from Main Street.

During the day there are even more opportunities to experience arts and culture on the island. You can take a class in plein air painting or learn to make your own Nantucket lightship basket in the manner of seafaring folks from the nineteenth century. The public library, the Nantucket Atheneum, often hosts lectures of cultural significance as it has for nearly two hundred years.

Food & Dining

The culinary scene on Nantucket is the very definition of an embarrassment of riches. There are too many exceptional choices to possibly experience them all. The two foods Nantucket might be best known for are cranberries and Nantucket Bay Scallops and there are many opportunities to enjoy each of these.

A favorite presentation of the local cranberries is as sweet dried morsels covered in chocolate that you can find at a candy store. Many of our restaurants also work cranberries into recipes for everything from relish to baked goods. And speaking of baked goods, Nantucket has at least six bakeries offering sweet and savory treats to go. You will find the Nantucket Bay Scallop on the menu in most of the restaurants on the island. Try something new such as seared scallops on a parsnip puree or stick to an old favorite fried served on a roll; you won’t be disappointed.

A fun recent addition to our dining scene on Nantucket is the food trucks. They offer tacos, fried seafood, complete raw bars, authentic hand made dumplings, wood fired pizza, sushi, and hot dogs. At last count we had at least twelve different food trucks. What a fun way to enjoy great food! You can find food trucks at the beaches, by the side of the road, and at the brewery. Yes, we have a brewery with local beer and live music. It’s a whole scene!

Of course, Nantucket has some of the most spectacular fine dining establishments you will find anywhere. With an emphasis on fresh local ingredients, these restaurants feature various cuisines and presentations from Asian fusion to classic French to new American. Chefs truly shine as they showcase signature seafood dishes and farm fresh salads with flair. An additional interesting aspect of dining on Nantucket is that your table server may work at a ski resort in the winter or be visiting the island from another country. Take the time to appreciate their company.

Nantucket is home to an impressive array of shops and boutiques to satisfy the most eclectic tastes, from the traditional to the whimsical. Many stores are small and independently owned, ensuring that you’ll receive a rare level of personal attention while browsing for the perfect souvenir or a fabulous gift for that special someone back home.

One of the fun facts about shopping on Nantucket is that a large number of shops on Centre Street downtown were once run by women who were responsible for commerce in the 19th century as many of the men were either whaling or otherwise engaged at sea. This is why the upper portion of Centre Street is also known as Petticoat Row.

Browsing through the stores on island you will discover that many offer hand crafted items and one-of-a-kind pieces of art. During the first half of the twentieth century Nantucket was home to a well known art colony. Artists traveled to the island from the eastern seaboard and beyond to study and produce art. This tradition lives on through the painters, weavers, potters, jewelers and furniture makers who create one-of-a-kind heirlooms and treasures.

You are likely to encounter a Nantucket lightship basket in some form as you shop. There are four distinctive elements that define a Nantucket lightship basket. The basket is woven on a mold; the staves are made of rattan; the weavers are of cane; and the basket has a solid wood base. Baskets with these characteristics developed on Nantucket during the course of the nineteenth century. While the precise origins of these baskets is not known, they have become a lovely symbol of Nantucket and her history. There are a few basket makers on island today who continue to hand craft these iconic baskets which you can find in better boutiques. You can also find the basket in jewelry form at various jewelry stores.

Antiques shops abound, featuring nautical pieces such as sailor’s trunks, scrimshaw, maps, paintings, and lightship baskets paying homage to Nantucket’s rich maritime history. You’ll marvel at the myriad opportunities to windowshop or purchase a unique piece of history on this island with a past that is ever-present.

Ships were frequently wrecked on the dangerous shoals surrounding the island and the quarterboard bearing the ship’s name would often be salvaged by Nantucketers and reattached to a house or barn. As a homeowner on Nantucket, one has a host of residential services available from installing a flagpole, rubbish removal, storage facilities, propane services and delivery, internet service providers, property management (and, for seasonal homeowners) property management and caretaking. Naturally, natural gas and heating oil providers will be necessary as well as water and electric utility services. Traveling to the island is part of the entire experience of Nantucket. Our distance from the mainland is an integral portion of our appeal. Transportation to Nantucket is either by boat or plane. You can buy tickets for a traditional steamship or a highspeed ferry. Either one will allow you to bring your bicycle and your pet! The boats dock in downtown Nantucket where you can walk to nearby shops, restaurants, and inns. You can also book a flight on a commercial airline to the island. Many flights to Nantucket originate in Hyannis on Cape Cod; however, there are also flights from Boston, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and more. The airport is a few miles outside of town but there are taxis and a public bus to transport you wherever you want to go once you land.

You can also get to the island with a private boat. Be aware that you will need advance reservations for a slip in the boat basin and that the town pier is for smaller craft and operates on a first come, first served basis. Likewise you can reach Nantucket via private aircraft and you should book your space in advance. There are landing, ramp, and fuel surcharges for private airplanes.

The only way to bring your car to Nantucket is on board the Steamship Authority’s steamship vessels and, especially in summer, reservations are often sold out well in advance. Parking is extremely limited on the island, particularly downtown, and the narrow streets pose a challenge for some drivers. The good news is that you really don’t need your car to get around the island. The Nantucket Regional Transit Authority operates a low cost bus shuttle service affectionately known as The Wave. You can ride The Wave to almost everywhere you want to go. There are also taxis lined up downtown and at the airport or you can call them for a destination specific pick up. If you would like a little exercise, a bike is a great way to get around the island. There are many places to rent them in town or you can bring your own from home. The relatively flat terrain and the miles of bike paths make Nantucket a bike friendly place.

Everyone needs information, even people on vacation! Nantucket has three local radio stations and a local television station. There are numerous online news sources that provide island information daily. Print journalism from weekly newspapers to monthly magazines offer varying perspectives of island life. Of course, the Nantucket Chamber of Commerce has numerous brochures, guides, and printed maps available free of charge at our Zero Main Street location. You can also subscribe to our Chamber newsletter and follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. You are sure to find just about everything you need to make the very most of your Nantucket visit.

Nantucket is the perfect place for a wedding or vow renewal if you love pristine beaches, historic architecture, world class amenities, and small town charm. Even though the island is 30 miles out to sea, we have all of the necessary elements to orchestrate your dream wedding.

The Nantucket Chamber of Commerce has a couple of printed brochures that would be very useful when it comes to planning your event and assisting your guests in getting the most out of their trip to the island to celebrate with you. You could start by sending your guests the Chamber’s Travel & Lodging brochure when you mail the “Save the Date” announcements. The Nantucket Chamber of Commerce official guidebook provides a comprehensive reference for all things Nantucket and is ideal for distributing to your family and friends when they arrive on island.

There are an impressive array of venues available to you for your special event that range from the most traditional to the unusual. It is possible to reserve a world class hotel and ballroom or to take advantage of the natural beauty of the beach. The staff at the Chamber of Commerce are always available to answer questions about venues and the pages that follow in this guide are a great place to start your research. If you are looking for a religious ceremony Nantucket is home to many different churches and a synagogue which you should contact directly. You could also consider having your wedding at one of the Nantucket Historical Association properties whose information you can also find in this guidebook.

You may want a private chef, a professional photographer, or a comprehensive event planner for your special occasion. We have all of these services and more. Nantucket’s seclusion, as well as its pristine natural beauty and vibrant living history, make it an ideal venue for successful meetings and corporate retreats. Many diverse groups travel here to experience this unique ambiance which fosters creativity and a true sense of relaxation and retreat.
