Draft statement on erosion project a road map to moving forward

Above all else, the Select Board wants to “avoid endless wrangling,” and “spend town and citizen time and resources wisely” when it comes to protecting Baxter Road from erosion, according to a draft position statement released Monday.

The story was a gut punch for high-school principal Mandy Vasil and assistant principal Jennifer Psaradelis, to read that some students don’t feel that reporting these behaviors is worth the trouble.

“I’m not happy about it,” Vasil said. “Our main goal is to have students feel comfortable and safe in our schools.”

The story, written by Veritas editor-in-chief Sarah Swenson, outlines instances that include racist and homophobic graffiti – slurs and swastikas – in the student bathrooms, as well as students being teased and taunted for their appearance and dress. It said that only a handful of these incidences were reported.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has introduced legislation that would establish ports of entry in Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard and other East Coast Democratic strongholds to process undocumented immigrants attempting to cross the southern border.

In a statement released Tuesday, Cruz said Texas border communities are “struggling to deal with a massive influx of illegal immigrants.”

Psaradelis acknowledged there are probably some instances where students have reported incidents to adults in the school system that weren’t addressed in the manner they had hoped, making it less likely for them to report in the future.

“It probably depends on who they report to. Our job is to make sure students feel safe in coming forward and to know that we as administrators will act with urgency and immediacy to address those issues,” she said.

But because of student confidentiality, both Vasil and Psaradelis said a student who reports might not always be made aware of the
