About our Chamber
Founded in 1934 and incorporated in 1954, the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce is the primary organization dedicated to promoting the interests of the island business community. Public Transportation
The NRTA schedules its routes and travel times up to a year in advance. The 2025 Rider’s Guide represents the desired level of service that we typically provide to the community. Published services are subject to change without notice; however, updates are provided at www.nrtawave. com, on all buses, and at the Greenhound building.
Year-round-Service will operate January 1-May11 and October 13-December 31, on the Mid-Island Loop, Miacomet Loop, Sconset Via Old South Road, and Fast Ferry Shuttle routes. Weekly service will operate 7am-9pm daily. The Airport route runs year-round from 7am-8pm.
Summer Service will operate May 12-October 12. Hours of service and frequency vary depending on the route. The Mid-Island Loop, Miacomet Loop, and Sconset Via Old South Road Route operate daily from 7am-11:30pm. Mid-June to Labor Day service will be provided until 12:30am. Madaket Route will operate May 12-October 12. Service is provided daily April 21 to June 15th on the Sconset via Milestone Road Route from 10:15am-6:15pm, and June 16-September 14 from 7:15 am7:15pm. Service is provided daily from June 2-September 14 from 10am-6pm on the Jetties and Surfside Beach Routes, and Sconset Via Polpis Road.
General Information: Fares: Are all FREE for all of 2025. Stops are conve niently located along all loops/routes and are designated by grey posts with blue stripes. All buses are equipped with to accommodate two standard bicycles on a first-come first-serve basis. Pets and trained service animals are permitted aboard all vehicles but must always be under control and not on the seats. All buses are accessible to persons with disabilities.
Your Island Ride provides ADA complementary paratransit service. To schedule a ride, call 508-325-5113, option one. To speak to a dispatcher, call Monday through Friday 8am-4pm. To make a request for paratransit services you must call at least the day before the trip.

History
Nantucket’s rich history – from a sleepy 17th-century farming community to its centenary reign as whaling capital of the world, to its current incarnation as an art and resort colony – is replete with many facets that contribute to its inimitable charm. This charm is owed, at least in part, to the ongoing – and fiercely dedicated – conservancy of its remarkable resources, both natural and built.
The island is fortunate to boast some of the finest 18th and early 19th-century architecture in the nation. Its historic core was proclaimed a National Historic Landmark in 1966, a designation extended to the entire island in 1971. Since 1955, the Nantucket Historic District Commission has regulated the exterior appearance of new construction as well as changes made to existing structures throughout the island in an effort to safeguard Nantucket’s historical integrity. Thanks to the stringent efforts of the Conservation Foundation and Land Bank, acres of conservation land remain untamed, evidenced by glorious open vistas like the Serengeti-like Middle Moors bordering the Milestone Road.
Testimony to Nantucket’s commitment to the preservation of arts and culture – both architecturally and in practice – 18 historic structures in the Core area of Downtown alone continue to function as museums and galleries, as well as venues for theater, music, learning and research, and culinary pursuits. Six of the buildings house theaters, a box office and art gallery. Six are places of worship, including Unitarian, Roman Catholic, Episcopal, Quaker, Congregational and Methodist denominations. There’s also an Aquarium, a Whaling Museum –accredited by the American Association of Museums – and the Atheneum, our island library. All lie within an easily walkable range of 28 short blocks! NANTUCKET HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION’S WHALING MUSEUM, 13 BROAD STREET
The Nantucket Whaling Museum and NHA historic properties depict the island’s transformation from a 17th-century farming community to whaling capital of the world, to a 20th-century art and resort colony. NHA’S QUAKER MEETING HOUSE & RESEARCH
LIBRARY, 7 FAIR STREET
Constructed in 1838, this is one of the island’s last surviving Quaker Meeting Houses, open daily May 23-October 18. The NHA Research Library houses an array of books, letters, whaling log books, maps, genealogical materials and 100,000 manuscripts and photographs. Open year-round. www. NHA .org
NHA’S HADWEN HOUSE, 96 MAIN STREET
The Hadwen House is a Greek Revival mansion built in 1846 by whaling merchant and silver retailer William Hadwen at the peak of Nantucket’s prosperity as the whaling capital of the world. Built circa 1800, Eunice Coffin Macy and her husband, Thomas Macy, inherited this 18th- century home in 1832. It would establish the Macys as one of the leading families in the neighborhood. Visit www.NHA.org for hours and info.
NANTUCKET ATHENEUM, 1 INDIA STREET
AFRICAN MEETING HOUSE, 27 & 29 YORK STREET AT FIVE CORNERS
A National Historic Landmark built circa 1820s, one of the oldest Black church buildings in the nation functioned as a church, school for African children, and social center for the New Guinea community. Established in 1834, and becoming a public library in 1900, the Atheneum serves as a cultural and educational hub for the island. Free library cards provide access to millions of books, films and other materials through its partnerships with other Cape and Island libraries. In addition to housing the stacks, the historic 1846 building also contains 19th century maritime art and artifacts and provides quiet space, free Wi-Fi, and public computers. The nation’s first museum dedicated to preserving and sharing the remarkable story of lifesaving, the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum is located on beautiful Folger’s Marsh off of Polpis Road. Immerse yourself in the island’s shipwreck and rescue history with tales of grit and determination during a time of service and sacrifice that embodies the heroic people of Nantucket. NISDA’S SEAVIEW FARM DAIRY BARN, 23 WAUWINET ROAD
The Nantucket Island School of Design & the Arts (NISDA) Seaview Farm also known as Eat Fire Spring Farm’s Dairy Barn, is the last standing example of 1800’s architectural farm structure on Nantucket. In collaboration with the NPT and the Community Preservation Committee, NISDA has protected, structurally and visually restored Seaview Farm for future generations. NISDA’s Seaview Farm Heifer Barn is where the calves were birthed. The Heifer Barn when built in the 1950’s was near the Dairy Barn and next to the second silo. In 1970 it was moved next door, to the Farmer’s house and repurposed as a Quilting Studio. In 2022 upon the Land Bank purchasing and becoming NISDA’s next door neighbor, the Heifer was gifted back to NISDA and moved to its original site. The Heifer Barn has returned home to NISDA’s Seaview Farm! For information on Arts Programs visit www.nisda.org
NISDA’s Long Shed Barn, 105’ x 45’, has expansive ground to ceiling sliding doors which accommodated the working Dairy Farm need for extensive machinery and storage. It has been fully and historically restored and repurposed as NISDA’s Open Air Ceramic Studio. Eat Fire Spring runs behind the Long Shed. It emerges on the Land Bank property and is accessible to the community. Hence the reason Seaview Farm was also known as Eat Fire Spring Farm. Easy bike ride from town. NRTA shuttle service is available (summer only). Great for families: changing rooms, playground, public tennis courts, and a boardwalk to the beach. Windsurfing, sailboat, and kayak lessons and rentals available. Beach-accessible wheelchairs also available.
2 Brant Point
Easy walk or bike ride. No lifeguard. Scenic beach beside Brant Point Lighthouse; a pleasant spot to sit and watch the boats rounding the Point. Strong current - experienced swimmers only.
3 Children’s Beach

As far west as you can go. Regular NRTA shuttle bus service or 5.5-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path. Food available nearby. Famous for viewing sunsets. Heavy surf.
EASTERN SHORE

Regular shuttle service, or 6-mile ride on paved bike path. Food and restrooms are available in nearby village of ’Sconset. Surf can be heavy.

The Nantucket Christmas Stroll is a heartwarming holiday tradition that brings a burst of festive cheer to our island each December. First celebrated in 1973, the event began as a small, community-driven effort to keep holiday shopping local and support Nantucket’s small businesses during the quieter season. What started as a simple evening event has since grown into a magical weekend-long celebration that draws visitors from all over—and remains a beloved highlight for locals.
Taking place the first weekend of December, the Stroll fills downtown Nantucket with joy and wonder. While the official island tree lighting ceremony is held the weekend before, during the Stroll, the entire town twinkles with lights, and over 100 Christmas trees decorated by local merchants line the charming cobblestone streets. Carolers in Victorian attire fill the air with song, shopkeepers offer warm drinks and seasonal treats, and revelers roam Main Street in cheerful holiday attire.
One of the most enchanting moments is Santa Claus’s grand arrival by boat, waving from the harbor before parading up Main Street to greet wide-eyed children and families. The Whaling Museum’s Festival of Trees—featuring imaginative, locally designed trees—adds to the holiday enchantment, along with craft fairs, live performances, and plenty of yuletide surprises around every corner.
The Christmas Stroll is more than a celebration—it’s a joyful expression of community spirit. It offers a vital boost to our local economy at a time when many island businesses depend on holiday traffic, and it serves as a festive reunion for neighbors, friends, and generations of island families.
Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning for your annual holiday tradition, the Nantucket Christmas Stroll welcomes all with open arms, warm hearts, and a hearty dose of holiday magic.

50th Nantucket Daffodil Festival
April 2026
Each spring, as the chill of winter gives way to sunshine and sea breeze, Nantucket comes alive in a sea of yellow for one of the island’s most beloved traditions: the Nantucket Daffodil Festival. What began in the 1970s as a modest effort by the Nantucket Garden Club to beautify the island with daffodil plantings has blossomed into a vibrant, weekend-long celebration that draws thousands of visitors and locals alike.
Held each April, the festival is a joyful welcome to the season. More than three million daffodils bloom across the island—lining roads, gardens, and meadows—and set the stage for a weekend of cheerful events. The heart of the festival is the Daffodil Festival Antique Car Parade, where meticulously restored vintage cars, often decorated with daffodils and creative flair, cruise down Main Street before heading to the famous Siasconset Tailgate Picnic. It’s a sight to behold—families and friends in festive dress, picnicking among a colorful display of island spirit, classic cars, and springtime revelry.
Festivities also include the Daffodil Flower Show presented by the Nantucket Garden Club, children’s events at Children’s Beach, art shows, live music, and local shopping and dining promotions. Visitors are invited to don their best yellow outfits, enjoy the beauty of the blooms, and celebrate the return of warmer days.
Beyond the fun, the Daffodil Festival plays an important role in supporting Nantucket’s small businesses during the shoulder season. From restaurants and retail to transportation and lodging, the economic impact is significant—and a testament to how community celebration and local commerce go hand-in-hand.

If fishing or sailing is more your style, you’ll find plenty of charters and boat rentals. During the season, the “Wave” bus makes it easy to get to Jetties and Surfside beaches.
Exploring the island is just as fun on land. Nantucket’s 32 miles of scenic bike paths make cycling a great way to see the island while helping to ease summer traffic. Public tennis and golf courses welcome players of all levels, and for something different, try a round of disc golf—it’s free, family-friendly, and easy to learn!
Nature lovers will find plenty to discover on Nantucket. The island is home to rare plants, wildlife, and unique animal species. Fishing & Shellfish Regulations

Shellfish
A Nantucket Shellfish license is required for anyone taking the following shellfish. Please contact the Town of Nantucket Natural Resources Department of complete an application at the Nantucket Police Station. Please make yourself aware of approved, restricted, and prohibited areas around Nantucket before harvesting any shellfish.
BAY SCALLOPS:
Size: Must measure 2.5 inches from hinge to top of shell.
Limit: 1 (one) bushel per week.
Season: Wednesday to Sunday, October 1 to March 31.
Note: No person may posses seed scallops at any time.
BLUE CRABS:
Size: Must measure 5 inches carapace width (from point to point)
Limit: 25 (twenty five) crabs per person (commercial or recreational).
Season: Closed January 1 to April 30.
Notes: 6-side traps / pots (MD style or lobster style traps) is illegal. Open-top traps that close when retrieved is permissible. No permit required. Night fishing is permissible. Taking egg-bearing blue crabs is prohibited.
BLUE MUSSELS
Size: Must measure 2 inches in length. Limit: 1 (one) bushel per week

Biking Routes
One of the best ways to tour Nantucket is by bicycle. The island is only 14 miles long by 3.5 miles wide with over 32 miles of bike paths. A dedicated cyclist can bike around the entire island in a day. Visit www.wheelsheelsandpedals.com for more information on biking and walking Nantucket.
1 SURFSIDE BIKE PATH: Approximately 2.2 miles along flat terrain. This path begins at Atlantic Avenue and Vesper Lane and ends at Surfside Beach.
2 MILESTONE BIKE PATH: Approximately 6 miles with gentle hills. This path begins at Milestone Rotary and leads to ’Sconset.
3 CLIFF ROAD BIKE PATH: Approximately
1.2 miles with rolling terrain. This path begins at Sherburne Turnpike and continues along Cliff Road to the Madaket Bike Path.
4 EEL POINT/DIONIS BEACH BIKE PATH:
Approximately 0.9 miles with gentle hills. This path connects the Cliff Road/Madaket bike paths to Dionis Beach.
5 OLD SOUTH ROAD BIKE PATH:
Approximately 1.5 miles through some open space and residential areas. This path begins at the Milestone Rotary and ends at Airport Road. Approximately 0.2 miles from the Nantucket Memorial Airport.

8 FAIRGROUNDS ROAD BIKE PATH:
Approximately 0.9 miles along residential areas. This path connects the Old South Road and Surfside Road Bike Paths.
9 MILESTONE CONNECTOR BIKE PATH:
Approximately 0.3 miles through open space. This path connects Old South Road and Milestone Road Bike Paths.
10 NOBADEER FARM ROAD BIKE PATH:
Approximately 0.7 miles through open space and flat terrain. Path ends across from the Strong Wings driveway, near the next connector, approximately 0.50 miles from Old South Road.
11 HUMMOCK POND ROAD BIKE PATH:
Approximately 2.5 miles of mostly flat terrain winding through some open space and some residential areas from Hummock Pond Road and Milk Street intersection to the parking lot entrance at Cisco Beach.
12 BARTLETT ROAD BIKE PATH:
Approximately 1.1 miles of mostly flat terrain from the intersection of Surfside Road past residential areas and ending at Raceway Drive, approximately 0.6 miles southeast of Hummock Pond Road Bike Path at Somerset Lane.

One fun fact about Nantucket shopping is that a large number of the shops on Centre Street were once run by women in the 19th century, as many of the men were away on whaling voyages or at sea. This is why the upper portion of Centre Street is often referred to as Petticoat Row.

Traveling to Nantucket is part of the entire experience. Our distance from the mainland is an integral portion of our appeal. Transportation to the island is by boat or plane. You can take a traditional steamship or a high-speed ferry, both of which allow you to bring your bicycle and pet. The boats dock in downtown Nantucket, where you can easily walk to nearby shops, restaurants, and inns.
Commercial flights are available from Hyannis on Cape Cod, as well as from Boston, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and more. The airport is a few miles outside of town, with taxis and a public bus available to get you to your destination.
Once you’re on the island, you don’t need to worry about your car. Parking is limited, especially in the downtown area, and the narrow streets can be tricky to navigate. The good news is that you can leave your car behind and take advantage of Nantucket’s walkability. The Nantucket Regional Transit Authority operates The Wave, a free bus service that can take you almost anywhere on the island. It’s an easy and convenient way to get around. If you prefer a bit more flexibility, taxis are also available, or you can enjoy the bike-friendly island with miles of bike paths—rentals are available or you can bring your own.
By leaving your car behind and embracing walking, biking, or the free Wave buses, you’ll experience the slower, relaxed pace of Nantucket life—just as it was meant to be.

For a religious ceremony, Nantucket has a variety of churches and a synagogue, which you can contact directly. Alternatively, you could host your wedding at one of the Nantucket Historical Association properties, also listed in this guidebook.
