The Light Box: Miami Infill is an academic project that examines comprehensive mixed-use housing in an urban context. The project focuses on organization and studies of adjacencies of living. The main topic becomes how to bring natural light into the infill space while dealing with the concept of living at many scales: from the relationship with the urban context to the scale of furniture.

The enclosure of the site due to its length and narrowness presents the problem of how to introduce light and fresh air into such confined space. Thorough analysis of the sun path over the site determines four main axes of light that will define the spatial, programmatic, and structural organization of the project. Carving vents that run in the direction of the four axes previously defined allows full penetration of natural light into the project throughout the entire day.

The Lincoln Road Public Library is an academic project that proposes a new end for the west edge of Lincoln Road. The project holds significant urban connotation because it redefines a start for the most important pedestrian road in Miami Beach.

Procession towards site [views]
[concept] The idea of the project is to separate all programmatic functions into independent objects that are interconnected by a system of floating corridors and stairs. The separation allows for quieter spaces and grants the building objects a wider range of views of the bay and the city. [strategy] The volumes are categorized by programmatic function. The “books” box is located in the central area and it becomes the pivot around which all other programs and circulation are arranged. The “reading” boxes stand closer to the bay to provide the readers with views of the bay and Downtown Miami. The “cafe” box falls outside the property line to become the most urbanistically relevant object of the project because it makes an urban statement that defines the west end of Lincoln Road. It faces the street and the bay and it becomes a point of interest that brings attention to the rest of the public library.

The Urban Creuza is an academic project realized during the Study Abroad semester in Genoa, Italy. The exercise proposed an addition behind the municipal building Palazzo Tursi, located on Via Garibaldi, at the foot of the Spianata di Castelleto. Being in the historic center of Genoa, the project is about the urban connection between Via Garibaldi and Spianata di Castelleto, two historically significant sites that are currently disjointed due to the difference in elevation between them. Therefore the concept of the project is to create a tangible link between both urban contexts: an architectural organism, which integrates the Genovese urban landscape, the slope of the site, a full functioning public building, and a pedestrian network. The Urban Creuza is a synthesis of urban juxtaposition where the connection occurs at all scales, inside and outside, above and under ground.

The connective path celebrates the insatiable pedestrian flow of the city of Genoa by providing direct walkable links with Via Garibaldi, Palazzo Tursi, and the Spianata di Castelleto.
Connectivity Diagram: Points of Interest
The zig-zag nature of the path alleviates the slope of the hill during ascension and allows for a wide range of views during the procession.
Sectionally, the project creates an overground walkable landscape while piercing spaces underground to allow for interior connections with Palazzo Tursi.
By combining the path with the programmatic massing requirements it becomes an “inhabitable artery that seamlessly integrates into the city landscape as if it was part of the urban fabric all along.

[vorkurs/mockplay: wall panel] Graduate Design 10 | Fall 2014 In collaboration with Haley Perry
Vorkurs/Mockplay derives from the idea of engaging with architecture through experimentation in the studio. We considered selected locally manufactured artifacts such as lockers, aluminum cans, and cardboard boxes to understand the process which generates the objects rather than their formal qualities. Documenting such processes showed how each one of these objects emerges from a flat sheet of material that is folded and/or molded into a 3D form. With this in mind we investigated the extents of 2D 3D and 3D 2D volumetric transformations, where historical mapping projections came to be the most relevant precedent. We continued along these lines to challenge the preconceptions of folding and unfolding the sphere through virtual investigations of drawing followed by testing through materialization. In the pursuit of new insight, we developed a series of operations such as twisting, stretching, and pinching to alter the 3D manifestations of the sphere and discover

The following part of this book is an experimentation in sequencing. We chose action verbs (such as pinch, twist, and unwrap) and distorted them incrementally in order to observe the effects it would have on the unfolded two-dimensional form. We came to the conclusion that by distorting the three dimensional object it forces the two-dimensional piece to change, sometimes more drastically then intended.

Instead of cutting and assembling the physical models by hand, this study was conduct to see if a method could be derived from folding the 2D form up in a 3D computer program. Essentially, this process was too arbitrary and random

After researching the different arrangements of fabrication labs, we began studying the site and massing out various options. 3 versions of square footage footprints were arranged in different ways in order to accentuate different program.
Choosing a version from our bubble diagrams, a simple massing was created. A frame was built in order to study the interesting spaces and to visualize the to complete the mass.
There are two sets of variations. One with the pure half sphere massing that is derived from the square footage footprints. The other set is the pure half sphere with the tops removed. This is to study the distortions that occur in the unfolded 2D shape, by altering the 3D mass.

Built experiments revealed a relationship between surface area and form where the unfolded projection would either maintain the surface area of the sphere (but it would considerably deform the object) or it would maintain the overall spherical by altering the original surface area. Using Pepakura Design 3.1.3a we automated the unfolding process and proceeded to study the individual elements that compose the 2D projection by building and testing paper models at different scales. From these experiments the project evolved into the panelization of the wall as an architectural element. Series of faces with alternated tabs, which assemble into each other, compose such panels. By studying how the tabs assemble together and the gaps between them, we were able to program the sizes and angles to predict the form and design the apertures of the structure.

[below] The sequence shows how deforming the 2D projection alters the resolution of the sphere and causes volumetric deformations.
These images reveal the unpredicted deformations that occur when attempting to assemble the projection into a spherical form.
nanette martinez [31]
The drive of the project are the deformations caused by the process of transforming 3D forms into 2D projections and later folding such projections into their original 3D forms. The tabs become a crucial element during this process, where their shape and size determine the dimension of the deformations during the assemblage process. Dancing Platforms is an academic project that proposes an addition to the Wolfsonian. The Wolfsonian is a museum and research center that specializes in objects that represent the meaning of Modernism in the arts and design. It stands in Miami Beach, one of the most socially active cities in the world. The building faces the intersection of Washington Avenue and 10th street, about three blocks west from the beach. The area around the museum undergoes a heavy flow of activity that includes pedestrians, vehicles, commerce, and recreation.

[concept] The Wolfsonian is a museum and research center that specializes in objects that represent the meaning of Modernism in the arts and design. As you get closer to the beach, the level of activity continues to increase in the main streets and avenues. However, once you arrive at the beach you find a vast open space that provides calmness. Following this line, this site’s most striking characteristic is the intensity of social, recreational and commercial interaction that goes on at all times, that seems to merge surrealistically with the peaceful environment offered by the vastness of the sea. Therefore this project analyzes the site in terms of the network of action created by the active elements in the city and its relationship to the suspense offered by the beach.

[network] a) A system of spatially interrelated elements, which may or may not be physically connected. b) Any net-like combination of filaments, lines, veins, or passages specifically arranged. It may extend peripherally.
[action] a) Performance, energy, activity, movement. b) An act characterized by physical and/or mental activity.
[suspense] a) A state of mental uncertainty and excitement, as in awaiting a decision or outcome, usually accompanied by a degree of anxiety. b) The state or condition of being suspended.

The concept is articulated in the network of interaction of the suspended “tunnels that run across the building, holding galleries, reading rooms, classrooms and research spaces. The circulation also happens within this network, highlighting the points of connection that create the programmatic interaction of the project. The front skin originates from the original points of connection found in the site, and it plays a main role in generating the start points and levels of the suspended spaces. Its frosted nature also helps to filter the sunlight to provide a comfortable level of natural illumination.

[travel sketches]
Study Abroad in Italy | Fall 2013 During the study abroad travels within Italy we visited several cities such as Rome, Florence, Genoa, Milan, Venice, and Verona. These sketches document my on-site reflections of the spatial qualities, proportions, and design I found throughout the trips.

[identification of work] [24] and [25] I designed and produced the generative diagram and network sketch using Auto CAD and Illustrator. I designed and built the conceptual generative model of the planes piercing the ground. I contributed 50% of the work to produce the site model. [26] and [27] I produced all line drawings using Auto CAD and Illustrator. I contributed 50% of the work to build all the models displayed. Specifically, I was in charge of hand-cutting the roof shapes and ramps, carving and building the facades, carving the orange finish of the sectional detail model, and further detailing of the site model. [28] and [29] I produced 100% of all 3D models used for virtual investigations throughout the project using Rhinoceros and Pepakura. I produced 100% of all axonometric drawings and fabrication drawings. [30] and [31] I designed, produced, and built 100% of the work displayed on page [30] using Rhinoceros, Pepakura, and Illustrator. I took all the pictures displayed. I developed 50% of the unfolded elevation displayed on page [31]. [32] and [33] I hand cut and perforated 90% of the sheet metal panels that compose the all mock-ups displayed. I contributed 50% to the assemblage of the full scale mock-up. I produced 100% of the line drawings displayed using Rhinoceros and Auto CAD. [34] and [35] I designed, produced, and built 100% of all drawings and models displayed in both pages using Rhinoceros, Auto CAD, and Illustrator.
