The Mercedes Tomorrow

A student project at ArtCenter College of Design

Boisterous sketches made around the floor plan and the site context of the project located in Beverly Hills, LA.

Mercedes as a brand in the year 2020 is in a transition into the Electric mobility-“The ELECTRIC FUTURE RUN”. The car giant nurtures its classic Mercedes design style with the contemporary elements interpretations maintaining “sensual purity” for its new cars. This project will be a bridge of the transition between the company’s past and future design styles, telling the customers/fans/users a story.

A collage I made representing the bridge between the past and the future design of Mercedes

The ground floor introduces the Benz style boutique hotel experience with the Mercedes Experience bar. It also has a Kiosk-Cafe where the customers/guests can relax and nurture the experience. The top two floors hold all the guest rooms of the boutique hotel. The whole experience from the ground up is semi-private to private spaces.

The entrance through the Kiosk-Cafe area of the Benz style boutique hotel welcoming you into the flavor of the space- the juxtapostion of past and the future of Mercedes.

“Made In India” pavilion

A “Made In India” pavilion, working with the campaign that promotes local crafts and culture. The pavilion takes influence from the “Namaste” which is an Indian way of welcoming, joining two hands together. The se ries of arches are an interpretation of the different fingers coming together. The junctions and the inbe tween spaces formed allow for exhibits of local craft/design, for people to visit, learn about, and support.

Community Center - Indian Village

Work with Dustudio, Auroville - Role: Architectural design/Interiors/Site Planning/ Detail development

The community center developed is a Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR) project accomodating multiple gov erning bodies and activities of the village. In addition to the Panchayat offices, the rammed earth construc tion developement also incubates, a public library, an area for daily market, Kund(courtyards), and an amphitheatre. The circulation spaces and the zoning of the community center is defined by the negatives spaces created by the elevated extended plinths around each structure.

The Pitched roofs imitate the character of the village’s housing and in an effort to extend the idea of lo cal. To lessen the sunny dryness and heat the roof tiles have a skin of Guna tubes(earth vase tubes) that keep the interiors of the buildings air-conditioned naturally. The project to a good extent translates or immmitates the vernacular Indian practices of the local construction to be an extension to the village’s cultural fabric.

1.View Showing the entrance of the community center

2.A view showing the extended neg ative spaces- adding character and utility to the plinths.

3. A peek into the external cor ridors of the offcies abutting the amphitheater. The sill levels of the outside windows extend as benches facing the corridor areas.

Neo-Work

Neo-Work is a co-working experience for the “now” with thegoal of learning from the success and the failure of the pre and the post-pandemic co-work spaces. Through biophilic design, biomimicry, and blending outdoors and indoors of the workspace. Neo-Work brings people back into a new working environment to work and connect with each other.

The Forms of the building have combinations mimicing nature; and geometric forms TO COMPLIMENT THEM. Multiple forms of the interiors of the building are inspired from the silhouettes in the nature. For example: a centrally facing organic work space mimics a river movement/ the crowned leaf shade forming roof ON the bulding is retrofitted in order to MIMIC A SHADE FORMED BY A LEAF under the sun, extolling the indus trial facade.

The centrally facing organic work space mimics a river movement. Frigate bird inspired sound proofing baloon is a dynamic inclusion to the space enhacing the audio-visual character of the space. The balloon reactst to the density of the foot fall of the space.

NIO-madic

As a spatial designer, I created an opportunity in the project to realize a lesser known precedented solution. Teaming up with product and interaction designers I had the opportunity to craft this wholesome project which fits the brief custom-made. After rigorously brand strat egising we designed a solution that would appreciate and enhance nomadic experiences through mobility marking the rising numbers of the nomads of the world - the “NIOmadic” future we as a team named it. We designed three different experiences namely- Live, Play, and Work. The image below shows you the Play pod.

Work Pod allowing the users to work in their place of choice.

Live Pod showing the users how to socialise on the go!

Allbirds

TheIndian flagship store. The store entrance welcomes with a series of Indian representations of Allbirds. One example is the floor “Muggu”, an Indian style de-cal in order to imbibe the Allbirds illustration.

Material palette of the store

The store is aimed to make their tag line - “World’s most comfortable shoe” palpable to the customers through different object like treatments of the space. The texture of the outer and inner walls representing their shoe’s knit pattern; the vase like quality of their shoes to create a cenral shoe trial and display pod; their materi al usage wool and light weightedness of the shoe through a lit cloud in the central atrium space; multiple form based designed elements like such, are utilized to created a flagship retail experience of the brand.

“It’s the perspective” like they say it. I could develop the best kind of perspective only because of understanding design as it is. I started developing it through the lens of architectural design, which led me to ask questions about all things in the world because we as architects craft experiences for people, unbelievably personal to them. I nurtured this perspective for a very long time now which led me to think about making a personal experience with deeper meaning and sound through very customized design solutions. This is why I call myself now a multidisciplinary designer with a core in spatial design. Hi, I am NANDAN, a small-town guy from INDIA, currently working to widen my perspectival frame in New York City.
