There is always something special in the air at Swiftsure Ranch.

Sometimes the pace is fast and fun, and at other times the rhythm is more like a slow, deep breath.

When the Blaine County school kids arrive each week or when we host Camp Rainbow Gold and Idaho School for the Deaf and Blind each summer, the energy and enthusiasm around the place is infectious. When a single rider and volunteer team head out to the trails or a group of veterans settle in to camp, the energy is relaxing and restorative. No matter who or how many are riding, we know it’s going to be a great day.

Several important infrastructure improvements took place at Swiftsure in 2015. We finished building a cover over the outdoor arena, which greatly improved the variety, comfort and

flexibility of our lessons. Our new riverside campground was also completed and remained busy all summer into the fall.

2015 was also a banner year for Swiftsure’s fundraising efforts.

The Cowboy Ball was the most successful ever, and we found a new purpose on the Sensory Trail with our first annual Blazing Pumpkins Festival.

2016 marks the 25th anniversary of our therapeutic riding program. We look forward to seeing you at the Ranch dancing your boots off at the Cowboy Ball in July or volunteering in a lesson out on the trails. Come join us at Swiftsure Ranch and find your stride.

As 2015 comes to a close and I reflect on the challenges and successes of the past year, I can think of no challenge that wasn’t worth the end result here at Swiftsure Ranch.

The horse is our partner for physical movement and a catalyst for emotional acceptance. These is no judgement, no stigma– just support and encouragement for our riders to accomplish their goals, in their own way, with the help of the horses, certified instructors and trained volunteers.

Most of our participants will have a life-long need for additional support in our community. At Swiftsure, we can and do provide this support for as long as needed, and there are no term limits on our services. We wish our mission or vision was to eliminate all disabilities or mental and emotional need, but that just isn’t realistic. But our vision to have everyone leaving the ranch feeling better than when they arrived, that’s doable!

It is pretty cool to make someone’s hour, day or week, and if you are involved in any way with Swiftsure Ranch, you are making that happen for over 100 people a week and making an impact on over 250 people a year. When you overhear a rider telling a volunteer that everyone else has “given up” on him and that he is so thankful that we haven’t given up on him–that is something that has more value and impact than can ever be measured!

For 24 years, the tremendous generosity of this community has enabled us to provide services free of charge to those who need them most. Thank you for your belief in our mission and your continued support of our programs. Free Weekly Lessons

On Oct. 16 we celebrated the fall harvest with the whole community! Over 500 people were in attendance for student carved and glowing jack-o-lanterns, food and beverage from local vendors, live music and fun activities.

The event was sponsored by St. Luke’s Wood River and Atkinsons’ Market.

WEEKLY RIDING PROGRAMS Swiftsure Ranch’s Weekly Riding Program is one of the major services we provide to our community.

With our outstanding facilities and stellar maintenance staff, Swiftsure is able to stay open all year-round to provide consistent lessons to our riders.

Therapeutic riding is offered as either a group or individual lesson–30 minutes to an hour in length–focusing on horsemanship skills to promote independence, build strength and coordination, improve cognitive processing and foster social skills. Participants work towards practical goals such as going on a trail ride, competing in a horse show, or herding cows. For some riders, simply getting outside in the fresh air and staying astride the horse is a Herculean task and an accomplishment in itself. Once a rider is accepted into the program, we work to accommodate their abilities on whatever level is necessary.

JUNIOR RODEO & SWIFTSURE STAMPEDE This year Swiftsure hosted the annual Junior Rodeo and Stampede Horse Show. Participants showed off their riding skills while family members watched with admiration.

Siblings participated in other fun games like goat-tying contests and everyone enjoyed a barbeque.

Friday, August 28, young riders were thrilled to ride their horses into oncoming cow traffic and show off their skills in cow cutting. What a thrill! The next day, on Saturday, eastern Idaho guest riders joined us for the Swiftsure Stampede Horse Show!

The riders performed in five events: Poles, Barrels, Walk/Trot/ Canter, Showmanship and Trail Course. The day was made special by the incredible equine athletes’ efforts, the newly finished covered arena, an incredible barbecue dinner and the support from all the volunteers!

SPECIAL PROGRAMS Swiftsure collaborates with other nonprofits in the local community to encourage the well-being of participants on a broader scale. Equine activities and therapies are provided to these additional programs and their participants free of charge.

CAMP RAINBOW GOLD 66 Oncology, Youth and Teen Campers 3 One-Day Camps 75 Volunteers 310 Volunteer Hours 96 Staff and Instructor Hours The second annual Camp Rainbow Gold held at the Swiftsure Ranch, was a big success. Kids spent quality time on horseback trail rides, and enjoyed fun outdoor recreation stations, including horse painting, arts and crafts, goat tying, fly fishing and face painting.

IDAHO SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF AND BLIND 26 Students One-Day Riding Camp 10 Volunteers 52 Volunteer Hours 40 Staff and Instructor Hours The Idaho School for the Deaf and Blind traveled from Gooding, Idaho, 110 miles round trip, for their special day at Swiftsure Ranch, an experience they look forward to for months beforehand. For students with hearing and visual impairments, riding atop a tall horse can be intimidating, but with our certified-professional instructors and well-trained gentle 1000 lb. therapists, confidence is built, and leaves a lasting impression on these young riders.

The Boise VA visited Swiftsure Ranch twice in 2015 in spring and fall. Both returning and new veterans participated, as well as their spouses.

GALLOP (formerly known as Ranch Hands) is a program offering referred teens the opportunity to experientially learn life skills through complete immersion in a working therapeutic equestrian ranch. GALLOP is an acronym standing for Goals, Accountability, Learning, Life skills, Ownership and Personal growth. In 2015 five young women and five young men participated in the program. By the end of the summer, the majority of them reported that their self-esteem had increased, they had applied for or secured a job, and had made a new friend.

As the primary caregivers and supporters of our veterans, the spouses can also experience the affects of Post Traumatic Stress, or other combat symptoms. These issues are addressed with equine-assisted learning, where the calm demeanor of our incredible 1000 lb. therapists positively affect everyone.

In the summer Higher Ground brought a group of female veterans to Swiftsure for a first-ever weeklong campout! Using the newly constructed accessible campground, the group participated in daily equine-facilitated learning activities and riding.

Swiftsure Ranch Instructors had the privilege of being an integral part of the veterans’ daily lives for one week, and all had great experiences.

BLAZE: Blaze was a Gelding Quarter Horse Morgan born in January of 1996. He was owned by Swiftsure Ranch and began participating in the program in August 17, 2010. He served in close to 1000 lessons during his time as an equine therapist.

“Blaze was a favorite horse for many riders. He was a gentle teacher and had a personality to fit just about every individual rider. He also helped in many of the Veterans’ programs, Camp Rainbow Gold and shared his special spirit with our vulnerable visitors. Many said he was a wise old soul. Riders would come alive with pride after finally accomplishing their first canter or trot on his beautiful rocking-horse stride. Blaze will be greatly missed, but will forever be remembered as a legendary therapy horse on the ranch.”

VIC: Vic was a Quarter Horse Chestnut Gelding Born in 1991.

He was owned by Swiftsure Ranch and started in the program in January of 2005. Vic served in over 1500 lessons while in the program.

“In his pre-Swiftsure days, Vic was a rodeo barrel-racing star with a giant heart. In his early years at the ranch, he had a ton of energy and brought a lot of spunk to the program. As he grew older, Vic was very stoic and often didn’t let on if something was bothering him. Instead he took everything in stride and loved working hard at his job.”

CHILE: In 2003 I came to work and met a new horse introduced to the program that needed a lot of tender loving care. I eventually named her Chile and took her under my wing. We became best pals for life. Chile was a special horse with bright eyes and could relate to life’s challenges. This is what made her such an incredible therapeutic riding horse, and one of the ranch favorites. We will cherish the memories of her and the time she served our riders!

Being a volunteer at Swiftsure…are there enough words to describe why it is the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done? Volunteers get to spend time with the horses, with the riders of all ages and abilities, and to be surrounded by the most supportive instructors and staff ever. Swiftsure has a positive impact on all of us, whether we have two or four legs. We all get to learn, share and grin in delight.

Having served on the board of Swiftsure Ranch for many years, I’ve always known it was a very special place doing important work.

However, it wasn’t until I started volunteering as a sidewalker that I truly understood just how incredible Swiftsure really is. The time I spend there is, without a doubt, as therapeutic for me as for the riders we assist.

I am especially lucky because both my former horses, Ben and Tina, are leased to Swiftsure by their present owners.

That makes them pretty special horses.

I sidewalk for Acey Shaw, an amazing man with an inspiring story.

Near the end of the 2015 fall session, Acey took the reins and rode for the first time since his illness without any assistance whatsoever.

No sidewalkers, no horse handler, no special equipment. Standing with the team watching Acey flawlessly guide his horse through and around the cones set up in the arena, I was nervous to say the least.

At the same time, I was emotionally moved by the expression of pure joy on Acey’s face. Later that day, while the hydraulic lift pulled Acey and his chair up into his truck to leave, he extended his arm inviting a handshake, thanked me and told me he never thought that would happen.

The heroes that day were Acey and a Norwegian Fjord named Henry… just another incredible day at Swiftsure!

When I was the horse handler for Mari and “her” horse, Ben, it was pure joy to see the love she showers on Ben and how sweet he is with her. Plus, Mari is becoming quite the accomplished rider.

Tina’s background is in cutting, and I am in awe of her calmness and patience with even the smallest (and sometimes very wriggly) riders. Tina takes such good care of the kids, and it must give great confidence to know that when they ask this large creature to “walk, Tina” or “Whoa” or tell her which way to turn, she does it! Then she’ll give them a nuzzle after the lesson. Bliss.

These riders and their families will carry the kindness of horses throughout their lives.

I think Ben and Tina know that Swiftsure gives us all a safe and happy place of opportunity. I am honored and delighted to be a part of it.
