LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR In 2013, we really settled into the routine of our new ranch home, and now we continue to provide year-round equine-assisted activities for over 250 individuals per year. The serenity of the ranch complements the amazing work done here by our dedicated staff, volunteers, and horses. We are moving into our 23rd year in the Wood River Valley, and one might think the day-to-day experiences would decrease in magnitude. However, we are reminded daily of just why we do what we do here at the Ranch. Our amazing equine partners not only carry the weight of so many bodies, young and old, but they also encourage physical abilities, impart trust and loyalty, and provide unconditional love The amazement comes in many forms–an overheard comment from a mother who tells her friend that the time her son spends at the Ranch has done more for him than any other therapy; the exit survey from a veteran who tells us that we were almost “too nice” because the military does not prepare you for niceness; or the trickle of a tear as a mother watches her daughter articulate that the horses allow her to do what she loves to do! Our days are filled with triumphs, successes, and smiles. All of which are attributed to so many; our horses, the only ones that don’t have a voice in the process, our staff, who continue to educate themselves and learn better ways to teach, our dedicated volunteers, who show up every day to give their time, and last but not least, our donors, who make it possible for us to continue our services—all at no charge to the riders! We look forward to the year ahead where we will continue to help others, enhance our existing programs, and explore some additional equine therapies that can benefit our riders. Sincerely,

Horse Power Included in the expense of operating our tremendous ranch programs is the cost of caring for the horses who literally carry us along this worthwhile endeavor. It is a big venture to purchase a program horse, and as an organization we take our responsibility to these animals seriously. In addition to the purchase price (which can be substantial for the right horse), the cost to provide the best care for our horses is substantial. If they don’t work out we are faced with the process of finding them appropriate placement, and the effort, time and expense incurred can be daunting. In light of this and other considerations, we are incredibly grateful to those who generously share their horses with us as part of our comprehensive lease program. Horses who don’t fit our criteria for purchase or donation, but have plenty of attributes to serve our population, can find a new lease on life at Swiftsure Ranch and their owners rest easy knowing they are in good hands and changing lives. Without our horses, the miracles we experience every day would not be possible. Familiar faces Much has changed for Swiftsure Ranch in recent years so it’s comforting to know that several of the ‘old guard’ in our herd are still thriving in their work as talented therapy horses. Among them is Vic, a 23 year old Quarter Horse gelding who has proved himself invaluable to our program hundreds of times over. Purchased in 2003, Vic was a finished gaming horse, specializing in timed events like barrel racing and pole bending. It took Vic some time before he was able to shift gears from ‘Adrenaline Junky’ to ‘Steady Eddie,’ but like aged wine, he was well worth the wait. Versatile and trustworthy with a touch of silly, Vic can take the smallest beginner to the advancing adolescent riders as far as they think they can go, and often beyond. In 2013 Vic faithfully carried Martha, an 84 year old Dressage rider who experiences Alzheimers and is a lifelong, successful horsewoman in the Wood River Valley. Martha often forgot Vic’s name but she never forgot how to ride beautifully or the joy being with horses brought her. Today Vic, like the rest of our elderly herd members, enjoys a lighter lesson load, specialized geriatric care and the satisfaction of knowing that he has set the standard for our therapy horses. And he has set it high.

New Friends There are many ways to ‘pay it forward’ and Casey, one of the newest members of our herd, has the story to prove it. Born and bred in Dublin, Ireland, Casey was brought to the US in 1999, after being purchased by Colleen Burgh of Anchorage, Alaska. Colleen was a true humanitarian who believed in giving back. and generously lent Casey to the local Special Olympics equestrian program, as well as with veterans in the development of Alaska’s first ‘Wounded Warriors’ program. In the spring of 2012 Colleen was diagnosed with an aggressive brain cancer and asked if there might be a place for Casey at Swiftsure Ranch,

where a former Alaskan instructor knew his talents as a therapy horse. A year later, Casey made the long trip from Alaska to Idaho, and within two months he was creating a reputation for himself as our resident Gentle Giant. Colleen passed away in February 2014, and having received pictures and an email of her best friend the day before her passing, she commented to her loved ones how happy this made her. In allowing Casey to join our herd and help ease the struggles of so many, Colleen herself found solace. We are so grateful for this remarkable woman and her special horse.

IN MEMORY OF JACK & OTIS Losing a member of our special herd is never easy; losing two within a short amount of time was indeed a heartbreak to everyone at the Ranch. Otis and Jack were both Quarter Horse geldings, but the similarities stopped there: Where Jack was a solid bay, small in stature and sturdy in character, Otis was a large, leggy sorrel with a giant heart to balance his goofy nature. Both horses were beloved by so many and their sudden losses left holes in our hearts and in our herd. Jack and Otis were lovely, unique boys. If ever two horses were destined for heaven, it surely is these two.

Equine Facilitated Activities & Therapy EQUINE FACILITATED LEARNING Horses and the lifestyle that goes along with maintaining them provide multiple opportunities to teach critical life and communication skills. For the most part, horses use nonverbal cues from the rider and handler to know what to do next. Swiftsure utilizes attributes like this to create â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;teachable momentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; where participants explore ways to better understand how nonverbal communication can positively or negatively affect the impact we have on others. BLAINE COUNTY SCHOOL PROGRAM During the school year, Swiftsure provides equine-assisted learning classes for students in the special education classroom or on an IEP (independent education program). The students arrive at Swiftsure with their para-teachers and participate in goal-focused equineassisted activities and learning, individualized to each student. Swiftsure Ranch serves a total of seven schools and approximately 40 students each year. The majority of these students continue riding at Swiftsure during the summer months. SPECIAL PROGRAMS AND OFF-SITE EQUINE OPPORTUNITIES Swiftsure Ranch provides horseback riding and activities for several other organizations. The Idaho School for the Deaf and Blind from Gooding participate in a day camp every summer. The students spend the day at the ranch grooming and tacking the horses and riding on our sensory trail which has stations specifically designed to engage all of our senses; touch, sound, sight, taste, and smell. The day is topped off with a barbecue. In addition to the many services provided at the ranch, Swiftsure horses and staff often travel off-site to provide equine experiences to those who cannot make a trip themselves. Among these are the Senior Connection and Bell Mountain Assisted Living in Hailey, where our horses visit with residents at their location. Every year

Swiftsure provides lessons and safe and fun trail rides to the campers at Camp Rainbow Gold (CRG) at Cathedral Pines, north of Ketchum. The campers are either in remission or currently going through treatment for cancer. It is a time for them to “just be kids” and they enjoy the freedom of riding and exploring trails. For many, it is their first time around horses. VETERANS PROGRAMMING Our veterans programs utilize the horse/human relationship to assist veterans in making the adjustment back to civilian life and dealing with ongoing issues they may be facing. Working with Higher Ground and the Boise VA, Swiftsure staff custom design equine activities to assist the recreational therapists from each organization to help veterans in their battle to regain normalcy and overcome their injuries. Swiftsure Ranch also engages the veteran’s caregiver and spouse to help encourage team work, relationship building and support. RANCH HAND SUMMER PROGRAM This program is specifically designed for young teens who are referred from social workers in the school system or the juvenile probation department. The program focuses on personal responsibility, work ethics, employability skills and skill building folded into the ranch environment. In addition, using equine-assisted learning to tie the rider’s behavior to the horse’s reaction, instructors relate these experiences to the rider’s life and relationships. The riders help design and plan work projects on the ranch, learn work skills related to the projects and perform maintenance projects. They not only learn about farm and ranch activities but also about horses and how to care for them, including feeding, grooming and veterinary care, and spend time learning learning. Each rider is paid a stipend at the end of the summer based on his/her performance during the session. SWIFTSURE STAMPEDE AND RODEO The Idaho Special Olympics no longer hosts equestrian events, so Swiftsure Ranch provides a stampede and rodeo for riders from around the state who compete in Western and English equitation, trail course, barrels, poles and cow sorting. Each class is judged, and medals are awarded to all participants. The day is completed with a barbecue and dance. COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM Swiftsure Ranch also functions as a place for community members to fulfill their required community service hours, whether ordered by the court or required by their school. Individuals can help at the Ranch either with specific projects, routine ranch maintenance, or volunteering in lessons to get community service hours.

From our volunteers When I first volunteered at Swiftsure Ranch I thought that since I had a lifetime of riding and training horses, I would probably be able to help out. What I found out is that although Swiftsure uses horses, it is not at all about horses in the way I was used to. It is about people and using therapeutic riding to help people with life-long physical and mental challenges to grow physically and emotionally. I help with Acey and Christine on Mondays. They are both confined to wheelchairs. The movement of the horse challenges their balance and therefore engages their abdominal muscles like no other thing can except the normal activities of a healthy person. The results are incredible. In the short time I have been helping at Swiftsure, I have seen great progress in balance, comfort and confidence in both the riders I work with. The riding is challenging for these riders but the small successes they make show up on their faces in the form of smiles. Even though there is no training horses, those smiles keep me coming back. From the moment I drove through the Swiftsure gates I knew I was going to be a small part of something big. I have been in this community of Blaine County for over 20 years and have done my share of helping and donating to the community. Until the moment I took the training course for a side walker and horse handler I had not been a part of the bigger picture. I was humbled by the caring and knowledge of each member of the Swiftsure team, the two and four-legged. As a volunteer at Swiftsure Ranch I feel like a witness to magic. There are magic moments everywhere you look. In a flash, everyone is smiling as they turn toward a small voice, so excited to show her horse her new pink boots. The 1,000 pound animal so gently and intuitively guided to a veteranâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wound, which was made in a faraway place, and with a gentle breath brings him to the present with a heart full of love and hope. The giving spirit of each horse is unique in itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own way. Yes, the horses work but they are healthy and happy in their herd and at the ranch, which is a sanctuary for both animals and humans. Shannon Orr
