L E T T ER F ROM OUR BOA R D P R E S IDE NT

WELCOME TO THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY We are The Chamber now, serving the greater Wood River Valley. With this second annual issue of our Membership Directory and Community Guide, we’d like to introduce you to our community, our organization, and our member businesses. Located in the heart of Blaine County, Idaho, the Wood River Valley is a unique and beautiful place that brings together Idaho’s oldest destination ski resort, wild scenic mountains, friendly communities, and productive farms and ranches. The area is home to more than 21,000 people, and we welcome you to join us—either as a permanent resident or as a visitor. Almost 5,000 families join our community as seasonal residents each year, and many more come on shorter visits to ski Bald and Dollar mountains or to hike, bike, and camp in the thousands of acres of public land that surrounds the cities of Bellevue, Hailey, Ketchum, and Sun Valley. Make sure to stop and visit us at the Welcome Center in Hailey for maps and information.

The Chamber represents more than 350 member businesses from Bellevue to Sun Valley and supports them with a combination of services that include networking, marketing, promotion, and advocacy. These businesses are as varied and unique as the wildflowers that adorn our hillsides in the spring, and you’ll find that they offer a full range of goods and services combined with helpful and personal service. We welcome you to the valley and our community!

Sincerely,

Richard E. Stahl President, The Chamber

hen I quit my PR job in SoCal to spend a summer working me around anyway. It’s interesting here—one minute you’re ing for an equine therapy program in Hailey, Idaho, all I shoveling horse manure; the next you’re sipping wine and watching knew for certain was this: I was going a free symphony. I have a feeling it’s going to be to hang out with my bestie in an idyla busy summer. I also have a date to go driving lic mountain town doing work I loved more than Nowhere was I a with Tyler—he’s going to show me around Silanything other than my boxer, Emma, and then I Creek, where Hemingway fished. You see—I stranger. People asked my ver was going get to back to reality in the fall. haven’t thrown away my writer’s soul entirely.” In the farthest recesses of my mind, I had no name, but not my backWhen I showed up for the drive, I saw someintention of staying. I’m a beach girl at heart; sand thing quite unexpected—Tyler with a mile-wide and sun, a handful of friends to share a quiet beer, ground. They invited me to grin on his face, a wagon with sleigh bells, and a good horse to ride, and anonymity in a crowd join them for art walks and two horses with backsides broader than the front were more my style. of my VW. “Come on,” said Tyler. “I’m going to

When I rolled into town in the dark and couldn’t even find a place open to get a frozen burrito, I wasn’t sure I’d make it through the summer. But the next morning, the beautiful surroundings lifted my mood, and the fact that the bagel shop in town had spares for tail-waggers made me feel better about everything.

book signings, to attend brandings and ropings, to hike the tallest mountain in Idaho and see Shakespeare in the park.

I emailed an update to my mother in Houston. She couldn’t understand my having thrown away a perfectly good career to waste my time “in Iowa, for God’s sake.” “Hi, Mom. Remember, I’m in Idaho, not Iowa. Today I met my first genuine Idaho cowboy. His name is Tyler Peterson, and he’s a farrier. He’s fifth-generation Idahoan, as cute as his name. I told him I’m a short-timer, but he’s showing me the ropes and introduc-

teach you how to drive.”

My equine therapy work provided the soul nourishment I needed to feel purposeful again, but I was also starting to connect with people. Nowhere was I a stranger. People asked my name, but not my background. They invited me to join them for art walks and book signings, to attend brandings and ropings, to hike the tallest mountain in Idaho and see Shakespeare in the park. With my new friends, I hunted for wild asparagus and morel mushrooms (which we then ate for dinner). Each of these experiences contributed to an unforgettable summer, but I was in a slow dance with destiny.

Not too many years later, I left my office at the Wood River Journal and walked across the street with Tyler to get married at MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY AND COMMUNITY GUIDE 2017

the county courthouse. I was due with twins, and my parents had come to town to get us settled in our new home. We hadn’t mentioned our marriage license because we knew they would be disappointed at the lack of fuss and formality. The enthusiasm of county clerk Marsha Riemann stayed with us as we walked back to my office, and I whispered to Tyler, “Do you think we can whip up a little wedding in the next few hours?” Tyler went left, and I went right. He made some calls, and I sprang into action. My parents were incredulous; with no catering or venue lined up, how could a wedding happen? They followed me as I zoomed around town, asking for action from the bakery, the florist, the hairdresser and the pastor. Then I realized that all we had at the house was a couch. Our yard, where we were soon to gather for a wedding, was all grass—no trees. We stopped at a local hardware store to see what they had in stock. It was August, and the sun was hot and high. The store had tables, but no umbrellas.

That was when I noticed a lone umbrella in the corner with a tag on it. I peeked and saw the name “Jennifer Card”—she was the horse veterinarian we used and a gal with whom we had enjoyed a few game nights. When I reached her, she said the umbrella was on hold for her mother. “You should break it in for her,” Jennifer said. “Make sure it opens and closes okay.” When the big moment arrived, my dad tearfully walked me through my empty house—me in my maternity dress, my hasty updo wrapped tight, my Atkinsons’ bouquet growing fragrant in the heat. The Albertsons wedding cake sat on a table under the loaner umbrella, and my friends and family assembled for a simple event I could have never predicted, and I knew I was home.

We are all strangers waiting to be introduced by an opportunity to do good.

Since then, I’ve made it my job to be an ambassador for this community. Whether working at Mahoney’s or writing for Sun Valley Magazine, I’ve pushed the agenda of letting this place love you and make you accountable. I’ve also discovered that the shortest distance between two people is an act of kindness. We are all strangers waiting to be introduced by an opportunity to do good.

Independence is priceless, but there’s nothing like a crisis to put the ‘unity’ in community. As I reported from the front lines of the 2007 Castle Rock Fire, my husband was out with his horse trailer making runs from evacuated areas with precious pigs, horses and people, and my girls were at home setting up beds for displaced residents and making nests for their pets. Still, I didn’t fully appreciate the power of community until one of my daughters was rushed to Boise to begin a fight for her life against leukemia. Within hours, people volunteered to care for our animals, neighbors created a food train, friends launched fundraisers for my daughter’s medical care, and the most incredible foundation of support emerged.

DISCOVER WOOD RIVER VALLEY 2017

I came here to reconnect with people on a human level—something I'd lost after years of reporting on crime and promoting other people’s agendas—and I found a community in every sense of the word. If you play your cards right, this can be more than a place you escape to—it can be the one you come home to.

Q

uality education and school choice are criteria of utmost importance to most people considering a move to a new community. The Wood River Valley is proud to offer many excellent educational options—both public and private—from which families can choose. Recognized as one of the best public school systems in the state of Idaho, the Blaine County School District (BCSD) serves approximately 3,300 students at its four elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, one alternative high school, and a K–12 rural school serving the community of Carey. With its mission of inspiring, engaging, educating, and empowering every student, BCSD is known for its award-winning arts programs, preschool and all-day kindergarten classes, advanced opportunities, diverse student body, dual-immersion language program, and low student/teacher ratios in classrooms that feature state-of-the-art technology. “There are plenty of choices here,” said Heather Crocker, Director of Communications for BCSD. “We have opportunities for success for every single student who walks through the door.” Excellent educational options can also be found outside the traditional public system. Since its inception in 1973, Community School in Sun Valley has inspired its students to think critically, embrace challenges, and lead impactful, purposeful lives. The school serves more than 390 day and boarding students in grades PreK–12. Close student-faculty relationships and experiential, project-centered learning define the school’s distinctive educational experience. The

HAILEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Sage School in Hailey is an independent day school for grades 6–12 that honors adolescence and strives to create a dynamic learning environment through a curriculum centered on human ecology and engaging experiences that promote self-awareness, community responsibility, and a sense of place. Honoring the 110-year tradition of Montessori education, Pioneer Montessori School serves children 18 months to 12 years old in multi-aged classrooms that reflect the emotional, academic and social needs of children throughout their development. Pioneer’s small, urban campus in Ketchum provides a unique school experience. Hailey’s Syringa Mountain School is Idaho’s first public elementary school guided by the core principles of Waldorf ™ education. The K-6 charter school offers a full music program, Spanish instruction and garden education. At Bellevue’s Waldorf-inspired Trinity School, students in grades 4–6 receive an independent education that incorporates music, handwork, and nature-based learning in a mixed-age classroom. For the youngest students of all, the Wood River Valley offers an abundance of high-quality private preschool programs, each with its own strengths and areas of focus. On the other end of the educational spectrum, the College of Southern Idaho (CSI) operates a branch facility at the Community Campus in Hailey. Since 1985, CSI’s Blaine County Center has promoted higher education and lifelong learning opportunities for all ages. CSI students can work toward an associate degree, prepare to transfer to a four-year institution, gain skills for a career change, and explore new interests—all right here at home!

The sculpture is made with Alaskan yellow cedar and measures 80 feet long by 13 feet high by 20 feet wide. The interior surfaces have been flame charred. Spur has since been relocated to a permanent home adjacent to the bike path just south of Ketchum. 24

Now in its fifth year, the Wood River Valley Studio Tour illuminates the community’s creative talent and showcases the work of more than 50 visual artists by opening the doors to their studios. In this self-guided exploration, participants have the unique experience of visiting the environments where art is created, getting acquainted with the makers, and learning about their individual artistic processes. The free multi-day event connects collectors with artists for engaging dialogue and provides an intimate glimpse into the life of the working artist. A public reception will take place Friday, August 18, followed by the two-day Studio Tour on Saturday, August 19, and Sunday, August 20.

Founded in 2007 to enrich the lives of residents by providing opportunities to perform and enjoy orchestral music, the Wood River Orchestra is composed of more than 30 musicians of all ages and abilities. Led by conductor Brad Hershey, the ensemble performs three main concerts each year—spring, fall, and holiday time—and plays at community events across the Wood River Valley. Performances are free, and new string, brass and woodwind musicians are welcome to join at any time.

yperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) may seem like a hot new trend, but its early implementations can be traced back to the 1600s, when a British clergyman named Henshaw rigged a system of organ bellows to control the atmospheric pressure of a sealed chamber in hopes of improving acute medical conditions. Most people know of HBOT as a treatment for divers who surface too quickly and experience “the bends,” but the therapy is used to treat a wide variety of ailments. When a patient is given pressurized pure oxygen, there is an increase in the body's ability to transport oxygen to areas where circulation is diminished or blocked. Oxygen is usually transported solely via red blood cells, but with HBOT, it is dissolved into all the body’s fluids and bone.

Phil Rainey started Hyperbarics of Sun Valley in 2012 after researching the use of high pressure and pure oxygen to relieve the side effects of some cancers and to treat traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress in veterans. As a military diver for many years, Rainey saw hyperbaric chambers used to treat decompression sickness, a “That hyperbaric life-threatening condition that can occur oxygen therapy when a diver surfaces too quickly. “That has become a form hyperbaric oxygen therapy has become of medical treata form of medical treatment is amazing given that most of the research into its ment is amazing benefits has only been done in the last 10 given that most of to 15 years,” noted Rainey.

the research into its benefits has only been done in the last 10 to 15 years.”

Hyperbarics of Sun Valley is the only stand-alone facility of its kind in Idaho. “We’re a pharmaceutically driven society,” said Rainey. “Most pharmaceuticals treat symptoms but don’t cure the real problem. I brought hyperbarics to the community because people here appreciate a more holistic approach to health. It's non-addictive and drug-free, and if it helps cure the body, that’s a good place to start.”

THE ULTIMATE SAWTOOTH MOUNTAIN EXPERIENCE Unplug and take full advantage of the north country of south-central Idaho nestled in the heart of the Sawtooth Valley—without sacrificing style or comfort. BY TORY WHITE

PHOTOS COURTESY OF IDAHO ROCKY MOUNTAIN RANCH

O

nly 50 miles north of the Wood River Valley, traveling scenic Highway 75 up and over Galena Pass through the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, exists a unique summer-only experience— the Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch. “A Remote Ranch In Idaho Serves Upscale Comfort,” the title of a 2017 Forbes article on the ranch, is a true testament to this exquisite destination vacation getaway. Just south of Stanley, this authentic guest ranch offers a Western experience for visitors who want to unplug and take full advantage of the north country of south-central Idaho nestled in the heart of the Sawtooth Valley—without sacrificing style or comfort. Whether it’s hiking two miles or 10 miles, a thrilling mountain biking experience on the nearby Fisher Creek trail or packing up for an all-day trail ride, fly-fishing or whitewater rafting adventure, exploring this region’s vast beauty and many points of interest is what the 900-acre ranch epitomizes. It is the essence of comfort, escape and rest as well as a real Western adventure overlooking the majestic Sawtooth Mountains. The ranch provides mountain bikes, hiking, a stocked fishing pond and access to the Salmon River. Throughout the summer, the ranch offers twice weekly mountain bike clinics, horseback riding, a weekly fly-casting clinic, a weekly yoga class and a weekly hike with Sawtooth Mountain Guides.

Awe-inspiring natural beauty has been captured in every aspect of the ranch design, which boasts contemporary renovated lodge rooms and duplex cabins, all with private baths that feature a stone shower or a deep, relaxing bathtub. With plush bedding, attractive décor and rock fireplaces in the 17 available cabins, a stay at the ranch is the best sleep you will ever have. Executive Chef Clint McCann’s impressive culinary expertise allows him to present menus and delicacies that feature delicious summer ingredients and local food products for a rustic but elegant gourmet experience. With multicourse dinners in the lodge dining room three evenings a week and four outdoor buffet dinner events, Chef McCann’s creations delight guests with many menu options. Mornings begin with a full breakfast followed by a gourmet picnic lunch to go, and dinners are world-class cuisine. At breakfast, look for delicious items such as creamy organic polenta with a slowcooked egg, asparagus, truffle butter, parmesan and grilled ciabatta. At lunch, try Chef McCann’s signature sandwich—the “Overnight Italian”—with ham, capicola, salami, roasted tomatoes, watercress, herb aioli and fresh mozzarella on ciabatta bread. For dinner, savor a crisp potato-wrapped Idaho trout with celery-root puree, Brussels sprouts and bacon with a browned butter sage sauce. Thursday night’s barbecue is an area highlight, and Tuesday through Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m., the ranch invites the public to dine (reservations required). If you’ve ever wanted to see the Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch, dinner is a great way to engage. MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY AND COMMUNITY GUIDE 2017

“We’re very dedicated to running this guest operation. We always hope that our guests can touch base with what is so special about the ranch. Part of it is the history, and the other part is that we’re not in Montana or Wyoming—we’re in Idaho.” Courtney Kapp, co-owner and architect Whether folks are returning or new to the ranch, most guests remark on their need for more “porch time.” The expansive porch is the heart of the ranch experience, where guests gather at the end of each day before a sit-down gourmet supper to unwind under the towering Sawtooth Mountains. The porch is the ultimate getaway, especially or if only to grab some porch time in a rocking chair, sip a beverage, read a good book or simply stare out at the majestic Sawtooths—a ridgeline like no other. The multitude of activities at the Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch bring a diverse group of travelers to the ranch. Honeymooners, academics, scientists, athletes and families come from far and nearby to experience an unparalleled getaway in the Sawtooth Mountains. Resourceful and enthusiastic managers and a host of dedicated ranch staff assist and advise guests on activities and special events as well as all of the area’s most exciting and notable sites and activities. In addition, they handle all the necessary arrangements to make your stay an unforgettable one. Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch owners Courtney and Steve Kapp and Diana Kapp and David Singer purchased the Ranch in 2005. Preservation of the Ranch’s history and architecture was paramount as the Kapp-Singer family upgraded the facilities for ultimate guest ranch comforts that retain the ranch’s unique Idaho character. With architect Courtney Kapp leading improvement projects, the historic lodge and cabins have been carefully renovated and restored to respect the ranch’s historic integrity, preserving the original structures. “We’re very dedicated to running this guest operation,” tells Kapp. “We always hope that our guests can The natural hot spring-fed pool is a great place touch base with what is so special about the ranch. to pass away the day or wind down after an Part of it is the history, and the other part is that we’re invigorating hike, bike or horseback ride. not in Montana or Wyoming—we’re in Idaho.” Built in 1930 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch offers modern comfort and historic charm. Before becoming one of four Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch 46

owners, Kapp was captivated by the setting as a guest and frequent explorer in the Sawtooth Mountains. Since the purchase of the ranch in 2005, she has been engaged in several renovation projects, sourcing local materials whenever possible to connect guests to a unique Idaho world. Kapp’s most recent project for the ranch is the new pavilion, which will be open for summer 2017. The pavilion is located on the lower ranch property adjacent to the ranch’s most coveted amenity: a natural hot spring on the banks of the Salmon River, which feeds a pool for therapeutic swimming and soaking for ranch guests. The pool is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places because the concrete that was poured to create it in 1930 is original (and continues to grow stronger over time!) The pavilion’s hydraulic wood doors open to a wide expanse, creating an open-air pavilion with a 20-foot patio and beautiful view of the Salmon River. Inside the pavilion, a wood-burning fireplace, spun-aluminum light fixtures and a refurbished Tyler refrigerator are a few design elements that make it an inviting space. The pavilion and the surrounding landscaping have been created to enhance the guest experience at the Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch. The new space will accommodate retreats, talks and meetings, and will also serve as a wellness center that offers yoga classes and massage treatments for guests (advanced bookings for massage are highly recommended). In addition, a gaming room with shuffleboard and other activities will also be available at the pavilion. “We want to bring the outside in and the inside out for our guests,” says Kapp. “We want to present the Salmon River to our guests as a treasure equal to the Sawtooths.” From the moment of your arrival at the Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch, peace and quiet will envelop you—with pure relaxation to follow. It could be the air, the view, the sense of adventure, the lodge, the staff or the real feeling of being away from it all. Whatever it is, the ranch has a mystical quality nurtured to perfection only found in Idaho.

Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch is open June 16–September 16, 2017. The ranch accommodates 50 guests in 17 cabins and 4 lodge rooms, which includes dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The ranch is also available for events and private occupancy. For more information or to make reservations, visit idahorocky.com, call (208) 774-3544 or e-mail info@idahorocky.com.

Come see us first for all of your Motorsport needs!

WHERE TO GO ROCK CREEK – SOUTH VALLEY One of the prettiest spots for ATV, dirt bike and four-wheel adventures is Rock Creek Ranch, located just west of Hailey and Bellevue. Now a preserve and agricultural study area managed by the University of Idaho, The Nature Conservancy, and the Wood River Land Trust, Rock Creek offers miles of dirt roads open for motorsports and four-wheel driving. It’s also a popular spot for equestrians and mountain bikers during the summer, hunters in the fall, and snowmobilers and Nordic skiers in the winter. KELLY MOUNTAIN — MID-VALLEY

P.O. Box 1528 - 4040 Glenbrook Dr. - Hailey, Idaho 83333 208.788.4005 - woodsidemotorsports.net

This relatively low-traffic mountain is a local favorite for any kind of sport. You won’t see much red tape in the way of restrictions, but be aware: Wildlife is abundant, and you could see anything from a porcupine to a mountain lion. Kelly Mountain is accessed via Croy Creek Road or Deer Creek Road. It’s relatively low in elevation, but it's a massive peak with expansive views because it stands nearly alone, dwarfing other mountains in the vicinity by hundreds of feet. GREENHORN GULCH — MID-VALLEY Offering some of the best single-track mountain bike and motocross trails in the region, Greenhorn Gulch is a popular spot for a variety of users, especially during the spring when the wildflowers are downright breathtaking. Greenhorn Gulch is located west of Highway 75, across from the East Fork of the Big Wood River. BAKER CREEK — NORTH VALLEY

LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED!

Located 15 miles north of Ketchum, Baker Creek is one of the most popular motorsports spots in southern Idaho. With ample camping and a large parking area along Highway 75 that’s perfect for set up and break down, Baker Creek is an ideal place to launch an adventure into the Smoky or Boulder Mountains. Baker Creek is also popular with snowmobilers and is part of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA). SMILEY CREEK — NORTH OF THE VALLEY Snuggled beneath the Sawtooth Mountains on the far side of Galena Summit, Smiley Creek is a picturesque 37-mile drive from Ketchum. It’s also the perfect spot to launch snowmobile adventures into the MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY AND COMMUNITY GUIDE 2017

The Croy Canyon track is just west of Hailey on Bullion Street; the other is located mid-valley at the end of Ohio Gulch Road, behind the waste transfer station. Both are open in season from sunrise to sunset.

OFF-ROAD CHECKLIST KNOW BEFORE YOU GO There are endless miles of terrain to explore in our region, but not all of it is open to motorized use. Check in advance that it’s legal to go where you want to, on the type of equipment you’d like to ride. Ryan's Mountain Rentals and Woodside Motorsports have off-road maps of the area, as does the U.S. Forest Service for the SNRA. The Idaho Bureau of Land Management (BLM) also has Off-Highway Vehicle Travel and Access Maps for our region available on their website (blm.gov/idaho). BE PREPARED TO GET STUCK

Even the best laid plans can go awry, so it’s important to carry gas and any tools you’ll need to keep your equipment running. Cellphone coverage can be spotty or nonexistent in the backcountry, so be sure to have an emergency plan that includes food and any gear necessary to help you survive if you get stuck. It’s always a good idea to tell someone where you’re going and when you plan on returning. BE ELEVATION AWARE One of the local mantras is “the higher you get, the higher you get.” The Wood River Valley and surrounding areas are tucked high in the Northern Rockies, and elevation like ours can cause all kinds of issues. That’s why it’s important to stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun, even in the winter. A little shortness of breath is one thing, but dehydration and sunburn can be serious issues. Significant elevation can also cause vehicle trouble and may require opening air valves to compensate for the lower oxygen levels. PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT

The golden rule of the backcountry is to “leave no trace.” Carry out any trash you carry in, and make sure the only things you leave behind are your tracks. BE ANIMAL AWARE This area is home to all kinds of wildlife, from small protected critters like sage grouse to big mammals like elk and moose. Make sure that your fun doesn’t negatively impact local animals. Always give wildlife plenty of space, and don’t disturb animals during the winter months, when forcing them to move through the snow or out of their winter habitat can seriously endanger their well-being. That goes for folks recreating with animals, too. Be courteous to horseback riders and folks out on the trail with their dogs. Slow down and announce yourself to avoid negatively impacting their experience in the wild.

ROTARUN HAS REAL MAGIC Serving the community as a bedrock for all kinds of affordable fun on the snow. BY DANNI DEAN

or more than 65 years, Rotarun ski area in Hailey has served the Wood River Valley community as ground zero for all kinds of affordable winter fun. Located in Croy Canyon, less than three miles west of town, Rotarun has long been a winter playground for visitors and local families alike.

Since its founding in the mid-1950s, Rotarun has operated with the generous support of communityminded volunteers. When Dr. Jesse Foster relocated to Hailey in 2010, one of his first physical therapy patients turned out to be a longtime Rotarun board member. “My client was so passionate about what Rotarun brings to the community, I just couldn’t wait to check it out,” recalls Foster. He visited the mountain with his two young boys at the first possible opportunity. “After just one visit, I immediately knew I wanted to get involved with Rotarun,” he said. Today, Foster serves as the president of Rotarun’s board of directors.

Why play at Rotarun when world-class skiing is available just a few miles up the road at Sun Valley? Rotarun’s family-friendly atmosphere and affordable ticket prices are two obvious reasons, but Foster believes the real magic is the sense of community people discover there—just as he did on his first visit to the mountain. “This is a place where you can take a run and catch up with your friends and neighbors,” said Foster. “Kids can learn to ski [or snowboard] here without feeling overwhelmed, and they can experience a taste of independence without their parents worrying about them getting lost.” Rotarun offers terrain that ranges from beginner to advanced, making it an ideal location for families. Skiers and snowboarders ascend the mountain on a “platter lift”—a mechanized system for pulling skiers and snowboarders uphill along the slope surface. Although the platter lift lacks the capacity of a traditional chairlift, it gives riders the option to unload wherever they wish. A favorite destination for generations of sledding enthusiasts, Rotarun upped the fun quotient last season by installing a three-lane tubing hill. The 450-foot downhill journey “Kids can learn to ski has proven to be a popular addition to Rotarun’s list [or snowboard] here withof winter offerings which, thanks to an upgrade of the out feeling overwhelmed, outdoor lighting system in and they can experience a 2016, also includes night skiing. In fact, Rotarun taste of independence withis the only place for night out their parents worrying skiing within a three-hour about them getting lost.” drive. For the past 14 years, – Jessie Foster, DPT Rotarun has also served as home base for L.A.S.A.R. (Learn to Alpine Ski and Race)—an affordable developmental ski program that teaches kids the fundamentals. Managed by the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation since the 2015–2016 season and staffed with professional coaches, L.A.S.A.R. offers low-cost, high-quality skiing and racing instruction for youth who otherwise might never have had the opportunity to try the sport. The next priority at Rotarun is installing a snowmaking system to ensure adequate coverage in low-snow years. With engineering plans now complete and the necessary water rights and state approvals secured, Rotarun’s board members are focused on raising funds to make snowmaking a reality. The “Ignite the Passion” capital campaign seeks to raise at least $50,000 toward the total $250,000 needed for snowmaking capabilities. The board also dreams of one day replacing the existing platter lift with a T-Bar lift, which would double the rider capacity and still allow skiers and boarders the flexibility to get off the lift at any time. Every weekend this past season, the slopes of Rotarun were packed with skiers, boarders, tubers and kids roasting marshmallows at the fire pit in front of the lodge. “The pieces are really starting to fall into place,” said Foster. “Just like the BCRD’s incredible trail system and the new Campion Ice House, Rotarun is an invaluable community asset. It’s an amazing place for families to play together, and it’s another thing that makes the Wood River Valley special.” 54

Due to increased demand for space and services, the KIC recently relocated to a new home at 311 N. First Ave. in downtown Ketchum—the 7,600-square-foot building that formerly housed the old Ketchum Post Office and the Scott USA ski boot factory. In addition to the current tenants who moved to the new space, the facility is open to new applicants seeking unique office space in the valley, with a mix of enclosed offices, open-desk seating, conference rooms and a large presentation area. “This is an incredibly exciting moment for us and one we’ve been working toward for many months,” said Jon Duval, executive director of the KIC, about the move. “This new location and facility will really allow us to expand our ability to serve entrepreneurs in the Wood River Valley and build on the successes we’ve had over the past two years.”

tarted in 2014 under the umbrella of the Ketchum Community Development Corp., the Ketchum Innovation Center (KIC) is both an incubator for startup businesses and the hub of the Wood River Valley’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. As the headquarters for local business innovation, collaboration and education, the KIC provides space and support for entrepreneurs working to grow their companies into sustainable businesses that will bring high-quality jobs to the community. In addition to providing resources to help people become successful entrepreneurs, the KIC hosts a wide variety of free startup workshops that are open to the local business community, dealing with topics that include corporate structure, accounting, human resources management and public relations. The KIC also leverages a network of highly accomplished volunteer mentors to help support and provide guidance for new companies. In total, the KIC’s programs are aimed at creating a robust year-round regional economy that isn’t completely dependent on seasonal, resort-focused enterprises. THE VALLEY’S COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE MARKET CONTINUES TO GROW BY PAUL KENNY

he snow keeps falling, and the commercial real estate market continues to grow, blossom, bloom, burgeon, and boogie.

In the past 12 months, the commercial market in Ketchum has heated up quite a bit, with average sale prices rising 62% from the preceding 12 months ($2,025,000 vs $1,250,000). Time on the market decreased dramatically from 259 days last year to 115 days this year—properties are selling 55% faster than the preceding 12 months!

The heat has been turned up even higher in Hailey, with 20 sales in the preceding 12-month period, compared with 49 in the past 12 months, an increase in sale transactions of 145%! Time on market has decreased almost 25%. Both Ketchum and Hailey are still “buyer’s” markets, but they may not be for much longer! The commercial market has not yet reached its pre-recession level, but we have definitely moved out of the Recovery Phase and into the Expansion Phase (see chart). During the recession, property prices dropped 30% to 40%, and have probably regained about half of that loss since the recovery began. Paul Kenny & Matt Bogue Commercial’s valley-wide leasing activity included a lower number of transactions, with 45 leases in

the previous 12 months, compared to 51 leases in the preceding 12-month period, a decrease of almost 12%. This positive indicator is due in part to the fact that a great deal of the vacant inventory had been ‘leased up’ from 2013–201 and, at the same time, few tenants vacated their existing spaces. Landlords no longer need to make tenant concessions to fill their spaces. The resulting low vacancy rate is great news for our area’s commercial market, and we expect to see commercial prices rise steadily for both users and investors!

DISCOVER WOOD RIVER VALLEY 2017

Several large-scale projects broke ground in Hailey, including a new building for Wiseguy Pizza, construction of the 15,000-squarefoot Natural Grocers store, the 34-bed Cottages residential care facility, and a big expansion of King’s Variety Store. The old Hitchrack Hotel & Gas finally sold and has been demolished to make room for new development. On the old Blaine Manor site, developers are finalizing entitlements for a Family Entertainment Center that will include a 10-lane bowling alley, arcade, full-service restaurant, convention space, and multiple outdoor activities. The Campion Ice House has been a huge success, drawing Sun Valley Suns hockey fans in record numbers. There’s a lot happening down in Bellevue, too. The Splash & Dash C-Store & Gas sold to Jackson Oil, the 56-room Silver Creek Hotel is under construction, and the historic “Bank Building” on Main Street sold to an investor, showing real confidence in the Bellevue commercial market. The volume of calls to our office from businesses, investors, and developers outside the area that are expressing interest in doing something here has really increased. All this indicates the positive direction of the valley economy. Historically, real estate activity would start in Ketchum, slowly work its way south to Hailey, and then move to Bellevue. It’s something new and exciting to see commercial sales and development activity happening simultaneously in Ketchum, Hailey, and Bellevue. I believe we are at the beginning of years of good things happening in our beautiful valley.

AN ACCIDENTAL ENTHUSIAST

What it's like to visit for the first time when you think your home state is the be-all and end-all of idyllic outdoor adventure. BY KARA WARNER

T

o say I was unprepared for the Wood River Valley’s delightful charm offensive is an understatement—and that includes the time I spent at the airport. I noticed instantly at the gate that there was something different about the people headed to the Wood River Valley versus everyone else, which carried over to everyone I met during my stay. People on their way to “The Valley” have a relaxed, friendly and enthusiastic air about them, but with a bit of exclusivity—it kinda feels like you're walking into a private club to meet up with a group of old friends. As a Colorado native, I grew up familiar with (and spoiled by) the magic of living close to the mountains and ski towns. My family spent countless winter weekends on the ski slopes, and during the summer we biked, hiked and went fishing. I am forever grateful to my parents for providing me with such an adventurous youth and instilling in me a healthy appreciation and enthusiasm for the great

outdoors. Even though I've lived in three other states (Kansas, New York, and currently California), and because I've done most of my outdoor "adventuring" in Colorado, I’ve always thought my home state was the be-all and end-all of idyllic outdoor getaways. I mean, how different can things be from one mountain town to the next? Famous last words. In December 2014, my boyfriend invited me to join his family at their home in Hailey for a few days over New Year's. He and I had been dating for about five months, so this trip was a big deal. I was flattered by the invitation and only slightly anxious about spending so much quality time with his family. As the trip approached, he kept singing the praises of Sun Valley and the area as a whole: "There's so much snow! The skiing is great! It's really cold!" None of those things are available in Southern California and therefore hold solid appeal to those who enjoy winter, so I said yes and tried to MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY AND COMMUNITY GUIDE 2017

remember where I had stored my cold-weather gear, thinking about how fun it would be to wear a warm coat, hat and gloves again. After my hosts retrieved me from the quaint airport in Hailey, they showed me around town and took me to happy hour at their favorite bar/restaurant, The Cellar. It's a homey, comforting place to eat and drink with locals—my favorite conversation partners because they have great stories to tell and, in my experience, are always welcoming to out-of-towners (even if I am from Colorado).

My favorite part of that fateful trip was the day my boyfriend and I, along with his sweet family dog Kaya, drove to Galena to do some snowshoeing. I'd never snowshoed before, but the idea of being able to walk on snow (essentially water, right?) without falling through 4 feet of powder sounded excellent. As it turns out, you can't really walk on snow; unless it’s packed down, you end up waist-deep in a drift. The tricky part is coordinating the wide steps you take in the snowshoes with where you plant your poles. (Note: There’s no shame in falling, which I did). It was sunny, clear, and very cold that day: only 3 degrees Fahrenheit by the time we returned to the car at the end of the hike. I did well out there, but the star of the trail was Kaya. She's a beautiful, sweet-tempered lady to begin with, but we put her in some fancy red snowshoes to protect her paws from freezing and she (rightfully) attracted all kinds of admirers. And even though there were a lot of people on the trail that day, there were countless moments of solitude and stillness up there. I always forget how noisy it is in the city until I escape from it, which is very easy to do on those trails.

Back at Galena lodge, we treated ourselves to a post-hike beverage. While my boyfriend waited on the deck with Kaya, I went inside to get the drinks and chatted with the staff. Somehow the subject of my Colorado roots came up, and thus was born my favorite line of the whole trip: "I used to live in Colorado," one of the servers said. "But it got too crowded." I just about died (in a good way). Having lived in three of the most highly populated cities in the U.S. (San Francisco, New York City, and Los Angeles) as well as Colorado, my definition of "crowded" differed wildly from his, but I knew exactly what he meant. There is a charmingly quiet, less populated, small-town culture throughout this valley which I now look forward to visiting annually—along with the silence on those trails, the crisp, cold air and the crunch of snow under my snowshoes.

CRATERS OF THE MOON Less than an hour east of Hailey lies an otherworldly landscape— Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve. Lava eruptions 15,000–20,000 years ago created a rugged, lunar-like setting ripe for exploration. More than 1,117 square miles in size, Craters features dramatic lava flows and cinder cones up to 820 feet high. Visitors will enjoy a modern visitor center and a 7-mile loop road to view the landscape. Hiking trails allow access into more remote areas, while the loop road offers pull-offs with wheelchair-accessible paths and interpretive signs. www.nps.gov/crmo

HOWARD PRESERVE Located on the west side of Highway 75 in downtown Bellevue, the 13-acre Howard Preserve provides safe public access to the Big Wood River in a gorgeous setting. The preserve was created in 2004 on prime riverside property that has been enjoyed by generations of Bellevue residents and visitors. This shady cottonwood forest is home to an abundance of wildlife and offers visitors a riverside walking path, picnic areas and fishing access. www.woodriverlandtrust.org

GALENA LODGE Galena Lodge is a community-owned day lodge in the heart of the Boulder Mountains, just 23 miles north of Ketchum. The last remnant of a vibrant 1880s mining town, the lodge was remodeled in the 1960s using lumber from Galena’s original buildings and cabins. Today, Galena is a popular spot during the summer and winter months, serving lunch and special dinners and operating as home base for outdoor adventures including cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking and mountain biking. www.galenalodge.com

SILVER CREEK PRESERVE Accessible just east of the intersection of Highway 75 and Route 20, this pristine spring-fed creek attracts a wide variety of wildlife and draws visitors from around the world. Silver Creek's unique ecosystem features one of the highest densities of stream insects in North America, making possible the world-class fly fishing for which the preserve is renowned. Birdwatchers also love Silver Creek—more than 100 bird species have been observed along Silver Creek’s selfguided nature trail, which begins at the visitor center. www.nature.org

Located a little over an hour north of Ketchum on the other side of Galena Summit, Stanley offers easy access to activities including whitewater rafting on the Salmon, boating on alpine lakes, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, fly fishing, mountain biking and backpacking. www.stanleycc.org

2016 MEMBER RECOGNITION

n February 2017, The Chamber held its second annual dinner and community awards event at local business Flight Archery in Hailey. “Our annual Community Awards events give The Chamber an opportunity to publicly thank the businesses and organizations that continue to lead our community by example,” notes Board President, Richard Stahl. “We’re very proud of the work those honored at this year’s event have done to enhance our quality of life, and it’s important to recognize these leaders for their continued commitment to doing it right.” Awards this year were given for Outstanding Community Improvement, Outstanding Community Service, Outstanding Customer Service, Nonprofit of the Year, and Business of the Year.

Hailey is also fortunate to have its library staffed by a team that is wholly dedicated to helping the community. The recipient of this year’s award for Outstanding Customer Service, Hailey Public Library, continues to show our community what great customer service is all about. “We congratulate the entire team at Hailey Public Library on this well-deserved award,” notes Bacon. “This is one award we should all be striving to receive.” Another new award this year, Nonprofit of the Year, went to The Hunger Coalition for its continued efforts to assist those in the community who are food insecure. “For many, the Hunger Coalition has been a lifeline, so it made complete sense that they would win this award the first year it was offered,” notes The Chamber’s office manager, Kristy Pallas. “Our community is a better place because of their efforts on a daily basis.”

New this year, the award for Outstanding Community Improvement was given to King’s Variety Store for the renovation of their Main Street location in Hailey. “Improving their location with a sigRecipients of The Chamber’s annual community awards are nificant expansion and an overall refined aesthetic has helped Hai- nominated and selected by member businesses and organizations. ley’s Main Street increase its appeal to the local shopper,” explains This year, The Chamber’s coveted Business of the Year award was The Chamber’s executive director, Jeff Bacon. presented to Atkinsons’ Market for their continued commitment The award for Outstanding Community Service was given to to the valley. “We are honored to recognize Atkinsons’ Market as local music man R.L. FIRST-EVER PHOTO CONTEST

I

n 2017, The Chamber expanded its reach to include the entire Wood River Valley. To celebrate our new valley-wide scope, we held our first-ever photo contest for those inspired by the view through their camera lens.

The winner of this year's contest, Flaviu Grumazescu, was awarded $500 in Valley Bucks, and his winning photograph is featured on the cover of this publication. The secondplace winner, Dirk Zondag Jr., will receive a $50 gift certificate to Tara Bella Flowers and dinner for two at the Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch. Names of the runners-up are listed in the pages that follow. Photos were judged on their originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact, artistic merit, and subject-matter relevance to humans and nature in and around the Wood River Valley. Judging was conducted by a panel of Chamber and Centerlyne employees along with a group of guest judges selected by The Chamber. To see all the photo submissions, please visit valleychamber.org/photo-contest.
