United in prayer Thousands of Christians and the faithful answered the call of President Hage Geingob yesterday, to take part in a national day of prayer. The President declared Wednesday (8 April 2020) a national day of prayer for Namibians to humble themselves before God the Almighty to save the country from the looming Coronavirus (Covid-19 crisis). People united in prayer at approximately noon. In many towns and over the city church bells were also sounded to mark the hour. On the left hand side: this striking image is circulating on social media showing an image of Jesus Christ the Great Redeemer consoling a crying child resembling the world. The child’s dress is a mosaic of international flags, showing the current dread the world goes through with the Coronavirus pandemic.

Schools stay closed No learners will be allowed to return to schools when they open for the 2nd Trimester on 20 April 2020. Teachers on the other hand will return to schools and assist with learners’ home tuition. Various schools will have various arrangements in place with regard to home tuition, whilst teachers will assist from school and parents also required to visit the school regularly to collect study materials or drop off homework. “Consult your specific school for practical arrangements”, was the advise a teacher explained on Wednesday. The schools will operate in this manner until such time Government advises differently in the face of the changing circumstances surrounding the Covid19 State of Emergency.

None of the promised 75 emergency beds, promised to the Walvis Bayand Swakopmund state hospitals to prepare for a possible Coronavirus outbreak, have materialised. This shocking revelation comes from the Chief Medical Officer of the Ministry of Health and Social Services in Erongo, Dr Amir Shaker.
“We hoped for it, but we don't have anything after three weeks of talking,” he said. The Governor of Erongo, Clr Cleophas Mutjavikua, announced at a news conference on 27 March that the regional government was working on supplying the isolation units of the Swakopmund and Walvis Bay state hospitals with 75 beds each. “One hundred and fifty beds and other applicable equipment are on its way,” Mutjavikua promised at the time. Shaker told Namib Times that at present the two coastal state hospitals respectively only have isolation units with 30 beds each. “These are only beds, no ventilators or anything else,” he revealed. Currently, both hospitals have mobile oxygen units. Shaker would prefer fixed oxygen units at each bed. He also blames politics for interfering in the construction of a prefabricated field hospital on the grounds of the Walvis Bay State Hospital. At the news conference on March 27, Mutjavikua, when answering a question regarding the proposed field hospital in Walvis Bay, explained it Continues on page 2

start his full day in office on Monday. The sitting President of Namibia is at power to appoint and replace Regional Governors. Governors are direct representatives of the sitting President in every Region. Governor Mutjavikua has been taking increasing criticism of late over what his critics say are his lacking leadership skills as the Erongo Region prepares for a possible Coronavirus pandemic. The Governor was also involved in a verbal altercation with the recently elected Regional Councillor for the Walvis Bay Urban Constituency, Clr Knowledge Ipinge. Ipinge participated as an independent candidate in the January 2020 byelection for Regional Councillor for the Walvis Bay Urban Constituency. Clr Ipinge beat the Swapo-candidate Sirie Topulathana. The Governor has been openly accused by Clr Ipinge as sabotaging all his efforts as Councillor for the Walvis Bay Urban Constituency. The Governor was criticised for playing the political game in a time the Region needed his leadership in the face of a potentially disastrous threat. Governor Mutjavikua in replying on these allegations said Clr Ipinge is the one to run his Constituency as an enclave and is not cooperating with the Erongo Regional Council. Also, that Clr Ipinge is not following administrative procedures in many instances.

was not possible to simply start construction on government land. He only foresaw the refurbishing of the current facilities, something that has not yet materialised. “I can take you there right now. There is nothing on the ground. In the meantime, we from the side of the Ministry of Health and Social Services are in discussions with serious business people about assisting us,” Shaker further explained. The four patients who tested positive for Coronavirus in Erongo are currently doing well. None of them are hospitalised and all are selfisolating. In Swakopmund a wife who tested positive for the virus, infected her husband and her 9-month old baby. They are all in a stable condition. A 69-year old man from Omaruru, who was tested by his private physician and found to be positive after travelling, is also self-isolating on his farm. Two weeks after testing positive they will all be tested again. Should these tests be negative, they will again be tested 48 hours later. If the second test is also negative, they will be cleared, Shaker explained.
Residence explained for State of Emergency Namibia's Justice Minister Ms Yvonne Dausab during a press briefing at State House in Windhoek today (Wednesday 1 April) provided clarity as to what “place of residence” means in the context of the regulations to curb the spread of the Coronavirus. According to Ms Dausab, place of residence means the house, out-

buildings, a second building on the premises used as living quarters, the erf itself including the garden and panhandle in the case of the yard being on a subdivided erf. No person, not even in the restricted areas of Erongo and Khomas, can be forced to stay indoors, as the house is a mere part of the referred “place of residence”. That allows for children to be able to still play outside and for people to function normal as far as it concerns their place of residence during the Covid-19 State of Emergency. On second thoughts: It might come as bad news for husbands waving the regulations under the spouse's nose to sidestep outdoor home chores like mowing the lawn, watering the garden, clean up after the dogs or finally having spare time to sort out that cluttered garage.

What would happen Our if trucks stop rolling? Most people don't understand how important the trucking business is for our survival. 98% of all cargo moved in and through Namibia from the food industry to healthcare is done by trucks. If trucks stopped, within a short period of time, Namibians would be in a life-threatening situation. There are 7 major industries that would be critically affected if cargo stopped moving because of their just-in-time manufacturing. These industries are healthcare, the retail sector, the food industry, agriculture, manufacturing, mining, waste removal, transportation, banking/finance. Below is a timeline of what would happen to society if trucking came to a halt. In the first week… Food shortages will escalate, especially in the face of consumer hoarding and panic. Delivery of medical supplies will be affected, and hospitals will run out of necessary supplies. Manufacturers using just-in-time manufacturing will develop component shortages. Mail and other package delivery will cease. Fuel availability and delivery will dwindle. Supplies of essentials like bottled water, powdered milk, and canned meat at major retailers will begin to disappear. ATM's will run out of cash and banks will be unable to process transactions. Container ships will sit idle in ports and rail transport will be disrupted, eventually coming to a standstill. In a fortnight… Shops and pharmacies will close due to lack of goods to sell. Automobile travel will cease due to lack of fuel. Hospitals will begin to exhaust oxygen supplies. No supply of needed equipment due to collapse of manufacturing and transport industry. As you can see above, if trucks were to stop moving there would be a severe domino effect. Trucks are the lifeblood of many industries; delivering the goods and supplies we need to exist. It is crucial to keep the trucking industry running smoothly to prevent the collapse of the country's services.

World Health Day was celebrated on Tuesday (7 April 2020) amidst the global Coronavirus crisis. Here in Namibia it is no exception. The country’s Head of State Dr. Hage Geingob paid tribute to healthcare workers who are joining millions of their colleagues worldwide on the battlefront against the deadly Covid-19 pandemic. “Today, as we solemnly mark World Health Day in the middle of the Covid-19 global health pandemic, I sincerely thank our healthcare workers who are carrying out commendable work as we are battling this deadly virus. It is in moments like this, that our attention is sharply focused on how vital and how brave health workers are as individuals. Nurses, doctors, emergency services and all those who provide services in the health care sector, save lives. They are everyday heroes”, the President said in a message from State House. The Coronavirus pandemic has lead to unprecedented developments globally. Virtually all countries globally are affected. Never before was the whole world united as one in a fight against a single enemy, as we experience now. Pictured: the healthcare worker will for generations be remembered as the people who fought on the battlefront to save humankind. Let us take a moment and think about the healthcare workers in Namibia quarantined right as you read this, because they have been in contact with Coronavirus patients in the line of duty.

Exotic dragon fruit thrive at Omulungu Estelle de Bruyn
Doing my lockdown shopping in a supermarket in Walvis Bay recently, I came across the exotic dragon fruit. Having only previously tasted the delicious fruit in Asia, I was surprised to learn that dragon fruit plants thrive right here in Erongo on the banks of Swakopmund river. After some digging on the internet, I found the contact details of the producer, Mr Siegfried Eckleben and contacted him for an interview. In this time of lockdown, the interview had to be conducted via e-mail. Where did your interest in the Dragon Fruit start? Eckleben: I bought the plot on an auction in 2010 and named it "Omulunga" after a tall palm tree (in Oshivambo) which is visible for miles from all directions. It consisted of a conglomeration of half-finished buildings and some plants. Two of the plants were an unspectacular cactus-looking species which I ignored until I happened to see a flower by chance one night. What a beauty! Unfortunately it withered the next morning. I still didn't do much, we kept watering those plants like all others. But then one of the plants bore a fruit which looked vaguely like an artichoke and eventually turned red. I tried eating it and it tasted good, sweet and sour, a bit like kiwi. Now my curiosity was aroused. I started reading up on the plan. The internet and YouTube offer ample information. What made them even more attractive is their robustness: you cut a piece off, stick it in the ground, give it water and manure - and it grows a new plant. Tell our readers a bit about the plant and the pollination process and how it differs from elsewhere in the world. Eckleben: Hylocereus undata or Dragon Fruit is one of plants known as "Queen of the Night". The flowers contain both male and female parts. In their native region, Southern Mexico and Central America, Dragon Fruit rely on nocturnal pollinators such as fruit bats or moths. We don't have these here. On our plot near the Swakop River, bees and other insects are intensely attracted by the flowers, but very seldom achieve pollination - so we have to hand pollinate them using a small paint brush or feather. Pollination has to be done at night or early the next morning. I estimate our success ratio at about 50%, i.e. half the flowers turn into fruit. We have achieved about 3 successive harvests per year. The fruit take 30–50 days to ripen after flowering. How many fruit can one plant produce?
Eckleben: I am not sure how many fruit a plant can produce or what their lifespan is, I haven't known them for long enough. As far as I could see on the internet Dragon Fruit usually prosper in subtropical climates. How has it adapted to our arrid climate? Eckleben: The Dragon Fruit plants thrive in our climate, both in Swakopmund and on our plot. They are climbing plants and grow up walls and trees. I took cuttings to an Azores island in the North Atlantic where it rains a lot more than here. After some 3 years they just survive and The exotic dragon fruit is a tasty nutritional treat. Photo S Masters have not flowered yet. https://commons.wikimedia.org How many shops do you supply with Dragon Fruit? Eckleben: We don't supply any shops with fruit. I only have 24 years to go till 100 and our dragons are rather an accidental hobby than a commercial business. When we have more than we can eat -which is seldom - we give them to family and friends. The pulp can also be preserved in a freezer. The dragon fruit occasionally sold in the shops are from South Africa. We have supplied plants to two nurseries in Swakopmund, but with limited success, which I blame on poor advertising and display. Unfortunately the plants look rather ordinary until one sees a flower. What is the nutritional value of Dragon Fruit? Eckleben: Dragon Fruit contain around 60 calories each and are rich in vitamin C, B1, B2 and B3, and minerals such as iron, calcium, and The beautiful flowers of the dragon fruit plant. Photo Siegfried Eckleben phosphorus. They are also supposed to be effective against everything except poverty! Recently I found another exotic cactus on our plot. It is probably a Snake Cactus, Selenicereus pteranthus. The plant is quite different to the dragon fruit but the flower looks very similar to a dragon fruit flower, only slimmer. The real surprise was the fruit, which is spherical and protected by fierce thorns. One has to handle them with thick gloves. I tried one for the first time today. Cut open, it looks quite similar to a Dragon Fruit, with small black pips. The taste is also similar, a dragon fruit has a more sour, tingling taste. But the real bonus is that these Snake Cacti now have a local pollinator, for the first time in 10 years they yield fruit without human intervention! I am definitely going to plant a few more Snake Needing thick gloves to handle, the flesh of the Snake Cacti is similar to Cacti cuttings.

Meatco resumes slaughtering After an initial lockdown Meatco resumed slaughtering yesterday (Wednesday 8 April). This ensures that carnivorous Namibians need not worry about the availability of healthy and tasty home produced beef steaks. According to the Manager Corporate Affairs of Meatco, Rosa Hamukuaja-Thobias, all employees first underwent thorough medical screenings before returning to work. “Anyone with diabetes or asthma was not allowed to resume work and were sent home. At Meatco the retirement age is 65, and all employees over 60 were also told not to come to work. Those in the administrative division will work from home and those employed in the production section will just stay at home. This has been done to ensure that those employees who are in the serious risk category are not unduly exposed,” HamukuajaThobias said. Yesterday a total of 550 carcasses were slaughtered.

The worst single number of deaths of Leatherbacks in Namibian history Eileen van der Schyff
John Paterson of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, colleague of the Lüderitz Marine Research and the Namibian Dolphin Project reported to these organisations what is probably the worst recorded mortality occurrence of the critically endangered Leatherback turtle in Namibia's history. Paterson reported that this follows an unusual mortality number of Cape Gannets “Malgas”, meaning “mad goose” near Swakopmund two weeks ago. The Cape Gannet is a large seabird easily identified by its large size (weight 2.6 kg), black and white plumage and distinctive yellow crown and hindneck. “Something is not right with our waters at the moment. Unlike most of the previous findings of dead turtles along our coastline, these animals were not entangled and were seemingly not injured. They have no signs of propeller wounds or shark or killer whale bites on their bodies”, Paterson said and further stated that some days are just sad. In the 100 km's of the coastline surveyed north of Swakopmund by Paterson on Sunday and Monday, the remains of 12 dead Leatherback Turtles were found. “There are at least two more turtles I could not locate”. Paterson reported and stated that the cause of death of these animals could not be determined, but that it is most likely environmental in that the turtles most likely died of starvation, toxins or algae. “These animals were not caught in a net or entangled, and plastic ingestion is unlikely as a cause given the number and apparent synchronisation of the mortality judging by the state of decay. All the animals were between 1.8 and 2.1 meters which means they were all adult turtles”. Paterson said. The Namibian Dolphin Project stated that the Benguela eco-system is one of the most productive in the world and clearly plays an important role as a feeding area for turtles from multiple breeding grounds.

Good cooperation praised by police Estelle de Bruyn
Praise for excellent cooperation from residents of Swakopmund, Walvis Bay and suburbs like Mondesa and Tamariskia was received from the officer in charge of community policing in the Erongo region, Inspector Ileni Shapumba. He however told Namib Times that challenges were still experienced in Kuisebmond where people were roaming in the streets and not adhering to the lockdown enforced under the state of emergency. “Perhaps these people are just not sensitised to the severity of the crisis,” Shapumba added. Monday was especially challenging for the police trying to enforce the stay-at-home order, but fortunately, as the week progressed, things got better. Shapumba was however alarmed at false photos circulating on social media, some taken in Kenya several years ago, that purportedly showed heavy handedness by local police officers. “Spreading these photos on social media paints a bad picture of our community, our country, our democracy and the fundamental human rights we are trying to uphold while enforcing the law,” Shapumba said. Though he admits there might have been some over-zealous law enforcement, he emphasizes that the main objective of the police is to keep the public safe and ensure the wellbeing of the community at large. He said the police force in Erongo has been issued with masks and sanitizers and thanks to donations, some gloves have been sponsored. He thanked all donors and encouraged the community and local businesses to join the fight combatting the spread of the Coronavirus by helping law enforcement to carry out their duties.

Cricket Namibia boasts re-designed website Cricket Namibia is proud to announce the launch of its re-designed website, www.cricketnamibia.com Under usual circumstances a launch would be accompanied by a fanfare, but with the Covid-19 lockdown the launch was kept a low-key event. The new site features a modern design, improved functionality, and easy access to essential information to end-user and stakeholders. The site was developed and designed by Smart Move at https://www.smartmove.com.na/ The end-product is a more valuable, user-friendly and responsive resource across all platforms and devices. “We wanted to focus on making it easier for our users to access the right information and to be able to directly communicate with the relevant admini-
strators. It is important for an established organisation to be more accessible to people who may need urgent assistance. Through this website, we would like to educate and inform our stakeholders on local cricket news and upcoming events, and to access our full calendar”, said a spokesperson. Cricket Namibia's new website will be updated on a regular basis with news and events of club cricket, school cricket, mini cricket and The Eagles. “We urge all stakeholders to use the website as a primary source to access local cricket information”.

The local sport community at the Fransfontein settlement in the Kunene Region recently received sport clothes, bags, shoes, stationery and water containers from the reigning Namibian Junior Sportsman of the Year (2019) Delano Muller. Muller has embarked upon a commendable effort to empower marginalised sport communities in Namibia. Muller wants sport to be accessible to every Namibian from young age. He wants to see more young Namibians exposed to sport with the vision to one day see Namibians taking up career sport disciplines. Muller explains the Kunene Region has been drought stricken for the lengthy period and people find it increasingly difficult to maintain their way of life. Many lost livestock and with that lost opportunities to earn a living. That makes it difficult to have enough money for day to day expenses for food, clothing and other essential items. Muller added: “I can see the devastation the drought has in the Kunene Region. I have decided to help the community by donating clothing, shoes, stationery
and water cans.” The aim with the water cans is to help the people who don't have access to water, to store and transport water in this time where sanitation is very important” Muller explained. Muller reminds Namibians the country is facing a difficult time. The youth has to learn to stand together and support and respect each other. “In unity, we can face a lot of obstacles”. Note: Delano Muller's initiative aims to donate new and old sport accessories like trophies, clothes and shoes which will be utilised to help to help empower the youth who do not have the means to realise their potential in sport. If anyone is interested in donating old sports equipment, they can call the Namibian Kickboxing Federation at 081 127 4711.
NAPSO cancels all 2020 events For the first time since its inception 23 years ago, the Namibia Private Schools Organisation (NAPSO) has announced that they will be cancelling all their events for the year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Chief Executive Officer of NAPSO Wouter Niehaus said “These 23 years were filled with the best sport, culture and academic gatherings this country can offer and made it possible for everyone to gather once more, catch up on old friendships, create new ones and just enjoy each other. When it came to the cancellations of these special moments it could only be caused by an international health pandemic like Covid-19 and demanded by the officials.” Niehaus added “With a very heavy heart, I am making the official announcement that all Napso events for 2020 have been cancelled. These events will be moved to 2021 and all event hosts will remain the same in the new year”. “Our hearts go out to the hosting schools that have already invested a lot of time and money in these amazing events. Now these
efforts must be maintained to be enjoyed in the coming year.” “We regret this announcement but would rather urge our parents and schools to invest their time and money into their communities and each other to recover financially before we kick off with an exciting 2021” added. Events that will be cancelled are as follows: The NAPSO /Securitas Private School Week hosted by Tsumeb Gimnasium (26-30 May). The NAPSO /Spar cricket festival and NAPSO/Nictus cultural festival, hosted by Private School Moria (24-26 September). The NAPSO /Build it sport teams' announcement and the first time they would have competed South-Africa. The travelling of the NAPSO school inspection teams to do personal inspections of the NAPSO schools.

Namibia's Journey to The Over 50 World Cup
Over 50 National Invitational Team
As a fifty-something in today's world, life often presents more of the same, few new challenges, and, could even be experienced as un-rewarding. One is seen by one's children as old and over the hill with grandchildren been dropped off at your house on Friday evenings so that you can baby sit and change nappies. You go to work in the hope of accumulating enough wealth to one day retire with enough. Going to the gym, walking, jogging, cycling, golf, bowls, yoga or some other form of physical training are seen as necessary to keep a healthy mind and maybe add a few years to your life. Some people in their fifties no longer have a vision for themselves or their family, the children have left home, often robbing one of the last meaningful things one lived for. Waiting for retirement to come along and wondering what was in store for the next no-one knows how many years. “If you are over 50”, does this sound familiar? After speaking to quite a few over fifty cricketers at the tournament, this was true in their lives, but, the Over 50 Cricket World Cup gave them a new lease on life, a reason to get excited again about life, a reason to gym and get fit, a new vision for life, a meaning in a meaningless world. It was early to mid-2019 when the news started filtering through, Namibia have been invited to send a team to the 2020 Over 50 Cricket World Cup. This was the start of a journey that would bring old friends together, opponents from the past were now batting for the same team and going through the motions in the gym was replaced by a renewed energy. Suddenly there was a new reason for living. Names that had been in the sports news in the 1970s, 80's, 90's and early 2000's were again appearing on cricket score sheets, perhaps not getting the same results as before, but once again feeling the buzz of competing. This newfound youth, however, was not without some pain and suffering as knees were operated on, physios were visited in order to treat muscle injuries that had not been felt in decades. Net sessions were held at Wanderers on Wednesdays, at “our house” (Daneel's house) on Mondays, Britsie's on Thursdays and Sparta whenever Willie could make it. One thing was evident through all of this, a visible improvement was seen each week, however, the most pleasing development was the way individuals were coming together as a team, with WhatsApp posts reflecting this. So, with 15 players and a manager who according to him would be an invalid for life if he was forced to take the field, we were set to go participate in the Over 50 World Cup as an Invitational side. We boarded Westair flight WV002 at Eros airport bound for Oranjemund to clear passport control and then on to Cape Town. Unaware of developments on the ground, Oranjemund was to give us a taste and warning of things to come when the plane door was opened and then suddenly closed again. The pilot announcing over the intercom
that there was a “slight Corona incident” at the airport and we had to follow the instructions of security personnel into the airport building, not to make contact with anyone, clear immigration and board the plane again. Thankfully the scare was only that and the suspected victim tested negative. Arriving at Cape Town International Airport, we got our two busses for the tour and headed to the hotel to meet with the other members of the team who were already there. With hardly any time to unpack it was into our rooms and straight into the meet and greet. A first look at our opposition over the next two weeks with seven games to be played in twelve days. A massive test for our “aging” bodies. One of the highlights of the meet and greet was the introduction of the six ambassadors Barry Richards, Graeme Pollock, Peter Kirsten, Mike Proctor, Omar Henry, and Dave Richardson. Graeme Pollock bringing a huge laugh with his account of the first time he batted with Mandy Yachad for Transvaal. Yachad was a fit youngster who ran many two's and three's. After the first over with Yachad doing this Graeme Pollock called him and said, “This is not an athletics meeting, if you run three and I run two, you will only get two and be run out.” After a good night's rest and tasty breakfast, we headed off to the WPCC Vineyard field to face Pakistan in our firstever Over 50 Cricket World Cup game. At the field we met up with Brennan, our TLO and Loren, the best Physio one could wish for. Brennan was good fun and full of energy from the start, while Loren knew she was in for a hard-few day when she had to treat quite a few of us before the warm-up session. Eventually after National Anthems and handshakes, the game was set to begin. Pakistan losing finalists from the first Over 50 Cricket World Cup batting first. After getting off to a fast start, a fine Daneel catch at backward point and fine bowling from Dee we had Pakistan at 95/5 and looking nervous, however the 45 overs took its toll on us and we dropped a few catches, letting them off the hook to post a decent 261. Our run chase never got going and we were eventually all out for 95. The reality hit home, and we realized that we were probably slightly under cooked coming into the tournament, especially playing against opposition who played in local veteran's leagues that had more teams entered than all the leagues in Namibia combined. Room 266 (we need not expand) Thursday was a relaxing day, with Loren treating everyone that had injuries (too many for comfort), not to mention a net session Birkenstock blow to the back of Willie's head, and chilling at the hotel. Friday 13th was one of the games we were really looking forward to. Playing against Wales, all of us excited to hear them sing their National Anthem live, and Daneel wanting to sing along. We were not prepared for the amazing reception we received at Reddam House School, who had
gone out of their way to make the facility world-class and we had young pupils accompanying us for the pre-match formalities. An amusing exchange took place just after the start of the game when Leeba said to those present that during the first game we (management) had made a few mistakes. Brennan in disgust asked him “who's your we, it was you.” We batted first and a patient 50 by Basie who was also Wales' best fielder on the day was not enough to post enough runs to place Wales under pressure, their opener batting through to give them a comfortable victory. It was probably one of those tosses we should have lost and fielded first. Then came one of the highlights of the tour, Reddam House School hosting a five-star braai for both teams with enough beers and wine for all, the food including wors, mutton chops, pork rib, Salmon and crayfish tails rounded off with amazing salads and bread. A spread fit for Kings and Queens. After the meal, we had the honor of the Welsh again singing their Anthem (accompanied by Daneel) and a couple of other traditional songs before we reciprocated with the Suidwes Lied. The members of Reddam House School parents who had hosted the braai saying after this that their friends would never believe what they had just witnessed. Definitely one of the highlights of the journey. After returning to the hotel we got together in the lady's bar (bar at the hotel) for a while before some of us joined the Welsh for a sing-along that lasted long into the night. This was a true celebration of what Over 50's Cricket is all about. Saturday broke with breakfast and more physio before moving to the Waterfront's Grand Beach for a lunch gathering that was, due to increasing Corona awareness not compulsory for anyone. This was a nice “kuier” for us as a team, exchanging stories and having a few good laughs. However, the Corona shadow was cast over the tournament with uncertainty gripping everyone due to sporting cancellations world-wide. The popular theory being that we would complete the round-robin portion and the two top teams would meet in the final. Sunday 15th we played England at the WPCC club. They obviously have a wrong impression of what over 50's cricket is all about, doing a pre-match warm-up that was reminiscent of the Namibian National Team at the 2003 Cricket World Cup. Batting first, we posted what we thought was a competitive score of just under 140 (including an Over 50, 50 for Gavin) on a pitch that was not easy to bat on, staying very low. During the lunch break Barry Richards called both teams together to give us the news that after consulting with the medical team, a decision had been taken to call off the tournament with immediate effect and we had to return to the hotel to await further communication. This was like a hammer blow to all involved as we were warming up to the tournament and the feeling was that we improved with every game. We were also like a band of merry men who were inseparable when off the field. Being complimented on this by Stirling Hamman who is Chairman of Over 50's Cricket. That evening we had a team dinner at Cowboys and Cooks who had lovely food and wine. It was the last time we were together as a team which was bitter sweet. Monday 16, the day we were due to play India, we said goodbye to Louis who drove back to Windhoek. Melt, Gavin and Rudi who flew back to Windhoek and Pretoria respectively and Ashley joined his family, while the rest of the team had a final get together, courtesy Jean Engelbrecht, at Rust en Vrede wine farm, a truly amazing setting with excellent food and wine which was enjoyed by all. Shaun Mc Culley joined us at this lunch and was re-united with Basie Buitendag, the two having played more than 70 rugby games together for the national team, indeed an honor to witness. At the conclusion of the lunch, Leeba and Etienne flew back to Windhoek, Lennie went home, Francois joined his wife for another wedding and Basie headed off into the Winelands to question why he never studied at Stellenbosch and supported the Stormers. This left a small band of merry men to enjoy the last night together at the Lagoon Beach Hotel. Daneel, Willie, Gielie, Dee, Zafar and Trevor, first having supper at a restaurant somewhere in the Cape before ending up at the Ladies Bar for a last get together with our friends from Wales and a couple of other countries. Stirling Hamman addressed the group that had gathered, saying how this showed the spirit of the Over 50's Cricket World Cup where the few of us who were left at the hotel came together to enjoy the last few moments of fellowship. What was a fitting end to the proceedings was the Welsh holding a capping ceremony where the umpires who came with them were capped, and then their manager, Michael was capped for the 2018 and 2020 Over 50 Cricket World Cups. Tears flowed freely during this ceremony which showed the pride with which each participant attended the tournament. Tuesday morning was the last farewell as Gielie joined his wife in the Cape. Daneel, Dee, Willie and Zafar were dropped off at the airport along with the busses where they enjoyed a last glass of the fantastic product the Cape has to offer. Trevor stayed on to spend a few days with family in Cape Town. On Sunday 22 March, Francois and Basie with wives in tow and Trevor boarded the last flight from Cape Town to Windhoek before the Corona isolation started. The final act of what had turned out to be a bizarre tour. One that never continued or concluded as we had planned or expected. One that was cruelly cut short by a global disaster, and yet, one that has taken the lives of sixteen men and fused them together in a bond of friendship and respect that surpasses any expectations and has shown us all that there is hope and expectation even if you are fifty something.
