Bringing a baby into the world is without doubt the most wonderful experience any mother encounters. However, giving birth to a baby on the day of the birth of Christ or the first day of a new year is a huge bonus to that.

A total of 9 babies were delivered on these two special days in Swakopmund.

The nurses at the Swakopmund state hospital confirmed they delivered six babies on 25 December 2019. The first baby was a boy named Simeon Nangolo Jesus Kapalanga. He was born at 00:37 and weighed 4.01kg. The second baby was a girl and she was born at 01.05. She weighed 3.07kg and her name is Hertha Atutala. The third baby delivered at the hospital was a boy, born at 04:00 and weighed 2.8kg.

A baby girl weighing 3.38kg and a boy weighing 3.9kg were born at around 10:00 later in the morning. The last of the little ones to arrive on Christmas Day at Swakopmund state hospital was born at 23:21pm and weighed 2.48kg.

Cottage Medi Clinic only saw the arrival of little Adrian Ceaser Auchab. He was born at 09:35 and weighed 3.5kg.

New Year's Eve brought smiles to two young mothers at the state hospital at Swakopmund. Elizabeth Joshua gave birth to Lotete Joshua at 02:50 on 1 January 2020. The baby girl weighed 3.32kg. Williams Hekandjo was born at 13:49 to Luwisa Ituwa. There were no New Year's babies here either.

Meanwhile in Walvis Bay, there were no Christmas babies or New Year's babies at the Welwitschia Private Hospital.

Three babies were born at the Walvis Bay state hospital on Christmas Day. Due to an administrative situation, the hospital was unable to provide the names of the little ones by the time of going to press.

Desire Nawes gave birth to a 3,3 kg baby girl at 04:20 on 1 January 2020. At 09:17 Maria Fillipus gave birth to baby girl weighing 3,150 kg. At 11:34 Shirley Naobes gave birth to a baby girl weighing 1,7kg.

For the Welwitschia Private Hospital there were no births on either Christmas Day or New Year.

Isaac Chikosi Residents and holidaymakers at Swakopmund were treated to an unlikely sight when a large desert elephant was spotted close Swakopmund on 24 December last year. In this very unique picture, a police vehicle is seen trying to drive the elephant back, northwards so that it can re-enter the Ugab River area. Water and feed were placed at strategic points to lure the desert giant back to his natural home, as it unlikely he would have found holiday accommodation in Swakopmund. Young man commits suicide by hanging The family of the late Ajay Allistar McNab (22), is struggling to come to terms with the untimely death of this young man on New Year's Day. The lifeless body of McNab was discovered hanging from a rope at the old water tank near Swakopmund airport. That was at around 05:00.

According to Chief Inspector Daniel Gurirab, McNab was in the company of his twin brother the previous day. They attended a New Year's Eve show.

“They walked early this morning from Long Beach to Swakopmund after the New Year's Eve show because they couldn't get any transport.

The deceased didn't say anything to his twin brother about what is disturbing him.”, reads the police report.

He parted company with his brother and was later discovered where he committed suicide by hanging.

A l t h o u g h fireworks is synonymous with N e w Ye a r celebrations, it r e m a i n s a problem to human safety, pet safety and fire safety.

The use of f i re w o r k s t h i s festive season was a cause of concern for both the Namibian Police a n d l o c a l authority law enforcement in all three central coastal towns.

“Fireworks remain an area of concern”, the Namibian Police headquarters i n Wa l v i s B a y stated on a media statement. Calling for the general public to be considerate and careful in the use of fireworks. people have m a r i n e pyrotechnics in their possession which is actually only to be used in the event of emergencies at sea when these flares are used to indicate the position of a vessel or boat in distress.

U n f o r t u n a t e l y, many of the pyrotechnic emergency devices are never discarded when expired.

Instead it is stored at homes to be used as fireworks during New Year. The use of these devices are not only an immediate danger to the person using it, as it has expired and can be unstable. It also poses secondary dangers to bystanders or fire risks where it lands.

The use of fireworks have proven at several previous New Year celebrations that it can injure and maim. People have been injured in successive New Year celebrations at the coast by fireworks. The end-results include severe burn injuries, facial injuries or losing fingers or eyesight.

Maiden call..........

The cruise ship AIDAmira, owned and operated by AIDA Cruises has made its maiden call to Walvis Bay on 2 December.

The newly constructed passenger liner was christened in a spectacular quayside display of fireworks and festivities on the night of 30 November 2019 on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

The ship shortly thereafter set about a world cruise of the southern oceans including the ports of Walvis Bay and LĂźderitz in her itinerary. She has 1300 passengers aboard.

The seventh leg of the Namibian National Championship Motocross was held at the Swakopmund Motocross track over the December holidays.

The Swakopmund Motocross challenge was the third instalment of its kind that comprised of various classes for men, women and children. It accommodated bikes with engines sizes which ranged from 50cc to 125cc and also offered various categories for the bikers like the 50cc, 65cc, 85cc, rookie's class, clubman, lady MX (motocross), quad ladies, quad men, veteran, MX2, MX1, as well as the coveted king of the dirt.

The event had 76 entries which included a lot of foreigners from South Africa and a young rider from the Democratic Republic of Congo as well as riders from Holland and one competitor from Germany.

Mark Stemagel (24) was crowned as the King of the Dirt for the second year in a row as he finished the eight-lap race with a time of 14:56:127. Chris Cilliers came in second with a time of 15:52.752. The third place went to Wanjo Kollmitz with a time of 16:45.487.

Botha wins Coastal Senior Open Golf Day Tournament Sixty-seven-year-old Tim Botha is the winner of the Bank Windhoek Swakopmund Coastal Senior Open Golf Day Tournament, which took place at Rossmund Golf Course on Wednesday, 11 and Thursday, 12 December 2019 in Swakopmund.

Sponsored by Bank Windhoek since 2015, the two-day annual Bank Windhoek Swakopmund Coastal Senior Open Golf Day Tournament saw a total of 29 senior golfers compete for the top prize. Although the event involves the play-offs between the coastal and central seniors, the emphasis was on performances by individual participants.

Botha, who scooped up the Bank Windhoek Player of The Day Award in 2018, won the Tournament with a total of 73 points, followed by Harald Engling and John Horne, on 68 points apiece. Engling took the second spot due to his seniority at 73 years old, while Horne is currently 70 years old.

The Tournament's organiser, Tienie Van Rensburg, said that he, together with committee members and senior golfers, was satisfied with the event. "Everything went smoothly and all of us, as senior citizens, enjoyed ourselves on this beautiful golf course. Our gratitude and appreciation go out to Bank Windhoek for the generous support since 2015," said Van Rensburg as he wished everyone at Bank Windhoek a joyous Festive Season and prosperous 2020.

Namib Tiger Trail Rudi Bowe The Bank Windhoek Namib Desert Trail took place at Tiger Reef in Swakopmund drew 441 women and men athletes that participated in 25km, 45km and 80km mountain bike races and 5km, 10km and 21km running races.

Alfons Kiesewetter the event organiser said that the event was a big success and that it is getting bigger and better by the year. The level of cycling in Namibia is picking up nicely, especially with younger generations.

Father and son Amandus and Matthias Röttcher are the champions of the 2019 Offshore race, hosted by Walvis Bay Yacht Club. The race started at the Yacht Club and ended at the Mole in Swakopmund.

Six teams participated in the race. Amandus and Matthias Röttcher won the closely contested race in a time of 2 hours, 18 minutes and 29 seconds in what was said to be one of the fastest races since its inception in 1973.

Brian Key and Kevin Cooper came in second with a mere 30 seconds behind the winning team but ahead of Zane and Zia Cooper who ended third. Lothar Redecker and Henry Roeber took fourth position, followed by Lauren Davidson and Eileen Albert in fifth. Jochen and Clemens Roeber took the sixth position.

Tristan Keulder is the Namibia Sailing Association (NSA) junior champion.

Derik Janse van Rensburg and Robert Glover were the winners of the Bell Buoy race.

This year's sailing action was a fantastic and well sailed by the competitors and all the sailors arrived safely.

Van Zyl and De Haas IRONMAN 4x4 Vasbyt Kings Theuns van Zyl and Doyle de Haas were this year's overall winners of the IRONMAN 4x4 Vasbyt at Dune 2 near Walvis Bay on Saturday 28 December.

Theuns and Doyle, in their vehicle "Non Stop" were the pacemakers and successfully completed nine of the ten courses. They finished first with 490 points, to clinch the C-Class as well as the overall competition.

Henties Touchies ends in thrilling final Rudi Bowe The popular Touch rugby tournament held on 26 December saw 14 teams competed in the 2019 tournament which concluded with a thrilling final between Walvis Bay based teams, Best Choice Gas Bottles and Kudu Rangers in Henties Bay. Best Choice Gas Bottles with Leighton Kearns (captain), Keanu Weber, Paolo Andrews, Aston Mukwiilongo, Donell !Gonteb, Jadon le Fleur, Elton de Smit, Aurelio Plato and Chad Plato beat

Kudu Rangers 1-0 in the a thrilling final won the 2019 HentiesTouchies tournament.

The win saw Best Choice Gas Bottles scope the winning price of N$10 000 while Kudu Rangers took home N$7 000.

Tournament organiser Verdun van der Watt said that the 2019 Henties Touchies was a big success with the level of rugby that were played was excellent and exceeded all expectations. Four Namibian National rugby players and some of the National Sevens rugby players made their presence felt in the tournament.

Class C: 1 Theuns van Zyl and Doyle de Haas (490), 2 Herman and Nico Theron (420), 3 Henri Knouwds and Rudolf Leeb (390).

Herman and Nico Theron in “Junior aka Poetsie” finished in third place, also with 420 points.

The event saw 18 teams from Namibia and South Africa negotiating a variety of obstacle courses in their 18 modified and customised vehicles. The IRONMAN 4x4 Vasbyt had a variety of obstacle courses that included sand, mud and tyre pits as well as a dash up a steep dune's slip face.

All the winners are Namibians.
