A man is in custody following an armed robbery at a gambling house in Swakopmund's industrial area on Saturday night. A gang of five armed robbers entered the premises and forced the owner to open a safe. The safe contained N$90 000 in cash which they made off with. According to a police spokesperson, a passer-by saw the men fleeing the scene in a green Opel Corsa. The witness saw the registration number of the vehicle and soon police investigators located the owner of the vehicle. He was subsequently arrested as an accomplice to the armed robbery and the manhunt continues for the gang. Business owners are once more reminded to have security systems and protocols in place, as armed robberies are a common occurrence. Being prepared for the unexpected can prevent crime in most instances.
Two Arandis residents go missing Eileen van der Schyff
Two residents of Arandis went missing this week, leading to widespread efforts to locate them again. At this stage the disappearances are not linked. On Sunday, 17-year-old Prisma Uiras left her home after regular disputes with her sister over her cell phone usage. Uiras left when her sister went to attend church. Uiras was last seen wearing a blue pair of jeans and a maroon-coloured shirt. Uiras indicated to a younger member of her family she was leaving for Swakopmund and will not return. Her family could not trace her yet.

Dr Kawana addresses fishing industry
5 MARCH 2021
Missing residents Continued from page 1 A day later, on Monday of this week, an employee of a charcoal manufacturer at Arandis, Mr David Viviers Smuts (46), also went missing. Smuts is light in complexion and was last seen wearing a grey jean, black shirt and a pair of black sneakers. He too informed colleagues he wants to consult a doctor in Swakopmund and would be staying with a relative. He was never heard of again. Anyone with information regarding the missing persons' whereabouts, is requested to contact Deputy Commissioner Iikuyu at 081 246 4757, Detective Warrant Officer Jacobs at 081 335 3851 or the nearest police station.
Namibia’s fisheries minister, Dr Albert Kawana (pictured above), is on a visit to the coast for his annual address of the fishing industry. Dr Kawana yesterday addressed a large audience of fisheries stakeholders at Swakopmund. That include both the public- and private sector stakeholders. Dr Kawana took the hot seat as fisheries minister, first in an acting position and then a permanent deployment, soon after the Fishrot scandal surfaced. Kawana yesterday called for greater cooperation between the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, trade unions in the fishing industry and the private sector of the fishing industry. He also called for more consultation at fishing association level where individuals can discuss industry-specific issues in the fishing industry with him. Kawana reminded the audience that the country’s fish resources should benefit the nation at large, and should not be reserved for a few people. “The Minister spoke very broadly. For us it is a wait-and-see approach whether indeed the private sector would be listened to and our inputs properly considered. The Minister did touch on very important issues such as the timely issuing of fish quotas among others. It remains to see how the Minister’s relationship with the private sector in the fishing industry develops”, an industry stakeholder told Namib Times after the meeting. The full extract of the Minister’s address can be found on Namib Times Facebook.

The trials and tribulations of Etosha Fishing The past decade has not been plain sailing for Etosha Fishing, due to dwindling pilchard stocks. Pilchard production has traditionally been the mainstay of this pelagic fishing company's business. A moratorium has been placed by the Namibian Government in 2017 on the harvesting of pilchard. The moratorium remains in place with no clear indication yet if the moratorium would be lifted and pelagic fishing for pilchard to resume. Etosha Fishing some years ago introduced the canning of horse mackerel, in order to augment the business of pilchard canning. Canned under the brand “EFUTA”, it soon became a muchloved and locally harvested product to the consumer. According to the managing director of Etosha Fishing, Nezette Beukes, commercial pressure is increasing on EFUTA, as it becomes increasingly difficult to source affordable raw fish to produce its the canned horse mackerel. Etosha Fishing does not have a fishing right, and therefore has to buy raw fish for canning either by importing or purchasing horse mackerel from local right holders. The prices demanded by the local right holders makes the operations unsustainable, explains
Beukes. In order to avoid closure, Etosha Fishing had to retrench some of its permanent employees and had to sell its three purse seiner fishing vessels used in the harvesting of pilchard. In the true spirit of Namibian entrepreneurship, there is no space for failure. Beukes is adamant the company will pull out all the stops to push through these difficult times. “We cannot allow these challenges to put our business on hold. We remain committed to aggressively tackle our country's development plans, in support of value addition, job creation and poverty reduction. Also, to do our part to ensure sustained economic growth at home. We have to devise various plans and business strategies to ensure that our cannery remains operational and hope that the government could assist us in this regard. If we are forced to close our cannery, it would not only spell the end of Namibia's pilchard industry but the loss of more than 600 jobs”, explains Beukes. Committed to job creation through value addition: Beukes says Namibia's fishing sector is
the third-largest contributor to Namibia's Gross Domestic Product. Government always reiterates the importance of increased job creation in this sector, and the need for higher-income generation from raw materials through value addition. In this regard, Etosha Fishing has been leading by example. As early as 2013 Etosha Fishing responded to the call to pioneer value addition in the horse mackerel sector. This led to the creation of EFUTA canned horse mackerel. As a low-cost, highprotein food source, horse mackerel plays a critical role in food security both locally and regionally. By canning locally caught horse mackerel, Etosha Fishing hopes to achieve a more sustainable fisheries operation with secure, longterm employment for more Namibians. However, without access to raw material, at an affordable price, it becomes difficult to maintain production at sustainable levels. Further explains Beukes: “One has to understand that value addition in the horse mackerel sector alone is not enough to secure the profitability of our cannery. As a low-end product,
we must keep the price as low as possible to ensure affordability, making effective marketing and expansion into foreign markets extremely difficult. The profitability of the product only really becomes viable with high volume sales.” A true asset in the fishing sector: Over the years Etosha Fishing has entrenched its position as a world-class cannery and true asset to the Namibian fishing sector, and the local manufacturing and food industry. We manufacture our products to the highest quality standards based on the principle of ISO9001, a globally recognised standard to demonstrate the ability to consistently produce products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements.
Etosha Fishing also commits to HACCP, to control food safety risks. The Company is certified by the Namibian Standards Institution (NSI), through an inspection and audit program. The NSI and the South African National Regulator for Com-
pulsory Specifications (NRCS) for compliance with canned food manufacturing regulations inspect all products we produce. With the focus on quality, it is no surprise that the company won its first award in 2015. Since
2017, Etosha won three of the five large enterprise categories at the annual National Quality Awards, hosted by the Namibian Standards Institution (NSI) namely Company of the Year, Exporter of the Year and Product of the Year.

Walvis Bay has a “Fish & Chips” again Although many take-away shops and restaurants offer traditional fish and chips on the menu, the traditional “fish & chips shop” has been absent from Walvis Bay for many years. Thanks to Hangana Seafood Processors and its able staff, a fish & chips shop opened its doors in the town’s central business district last Friday. The shop is named “Fisher Bank”. That is in honour of Hangana Seafood Processors’ flag-ship fishing vessel, Fisher Bank. Fisher Bank is the right place to be if you crave a portion of traditional fish & chips. Perhaps a juicy meal of calamari and chips or any of the other very exci-ting seafood-centered items on the menu. Situated on 7th Road (Eddie van Wyk Building), Fisher Bank offers a wide selection on its takeaway menu, at very affordable prices. The Governor of Erongo, Cllr Neville Andre, had the honour of cutting the rib-bon at Fisher Bank on Friday. The Governor congratulated Hangana Seafood Processors and its staff on the opening of the shop, as not only does it carry forward the torch of adding value to Namibia’s seafood resources but it also created job opportunities and at national level it adds to Government revenues in the form of both direct and indirect taxes. Also at the opening was the managing director of Hangana Seafood Proces-sors, Mr Herman Theron, and staff members of the company. It was quite impressive to see how Hangana employees jumped in and helped out, to get Fisher Bank out of the starting blocks on its first day. Fisherbank’s staff says: “welcome aboard!” * On the pictures: cutting of the ribbon, staff of Hangana that assisted to make Fisher Bank a reality and Mr Renier Thiersen was the first customer at Fisher Bank.

Walvis Bay town council distances itself from Janet Martin Foundation
Residents at their own risk if they register for housing at the Foundation
Walvis Bay mayor, Cllr Trevino Forbes, says the Walvis Bay municipal council is distancing itself from the former deputy-mayor of the town, Penny Martin-Louw's efforts to compile a list to determine how many people in the harbour town needs housing.
Twaloloka Housing Project belongs to Government
Martin, who served as deputy-mayor under the Swapo-led town council, is using her Janet Martin Foundation to compile the list. “Residents are advised this exercise has not been endorsed by Council, nor was Council informed of this exercise. Those registering themselves are doing so at their own risk and the municipality of Walvis Bay will not be held liable for any activities undertaken by the Janet Martin Foundation”, Cllr. Forbes explained at the last monthly council meeting. Mayor Forbes also made use of the opportunity to assure the public of Walvis Bay that Council is investigating several options for housing projects. Several public meetings (considering Covid-19 safety protocols) will be conducted in the foreseeable future to inform residents of these options.
The Twaloloka Housing Project in Walvis Bay's Kuisebmond suburb is funded by the Namibian Government, through the Office of the Prime Minister. The municipality of Walvis Bay, through Council, is only facilitating the project on behalf of Government to ensure the project is properly completed. Walvis Bay mayor, Cllr Trevino Forbes, explained Council’s position in this regard at the recent monthly Council meeting, held at the end of February. Fuel price increase - brace for more fuel hikes and higher inflation........ Global crude oil prices could surpass USD71 by mid-year
The rapid recovery of the global economy, in the wake of the Covid-19 global pandemic, is the major drive behind the 80 cents per liter fuel price increase for both petrol and diesel that hit Namibia on Wednesday. In a statement the Ministry of Mines and Energy said the fuel price increase is expected to have a negative effect on consumer prices. Fuel price increases result in higher transport costs to get commodities to the consumer. As the global economy opens up, the demand for crude oil is sharply rising. Crude oil producers have been scaling down crude oil production since the Covid-19 pandemic hit at the beginning of 2020. The Ministry of Mines and Energy announced earlier this week that the public can again launch applications for Crude oil producers could not predict with cernew fuel retail and wholesale licenses. tainty when or at what pace the world economy A moratorium on new applications was in place for a lengthy period and expired on 2 March 2021. would open up again. Media Release:
Sustainable finance, a catalyst for Namibia's recovery from Covid-19 The Covid-19 pandemic has heightened the focus on climate change and financial instruments that promote sustainable economic development. The pandemic has impeded Namibia's growth and demanded new approaches to economic development. It has also highlighted the importance of sustainability and environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) issues. It is noted that pressure is building on financial institutions and non-banking financial institutions, asset managers and corporates to give more attention to environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues in their day-to-day operations. We believe that Namibia is primed for a sustainable finance boom, given its potential in the renewable energy space and its ongoing developmental challenges. The fastest and most cost-effective way to address energy supply is through renewable power projects. Further, advances in battery
storage technologies, coupled with cost declines, mean renewables are becoming increasingly attractive and viable. Sustainable finance could help drive Namibia's recovery from Covid-19 while also incentivising muchneeded investments in the green economy and social development. Partly owing to the impact of Covid-19, we are already seeing a surge in interest in financial products that promote a more sustainable economy. For instance, the pandemic is
boosting demand for bonds that fund social projects and this trend is expected to continue. Social bonds, which are used to finance projects focused on delivering positive social outcomes, have come to the fore during the pandemic as investors and corporates seek to make an impact, while also generating attractive returns. We expect to see a wave of decentralised green energy projects as corporates and municipalities look to secure reliable and affordable supplies while further-
ing their ESG agendas. The expansion of the sustainable finance market's growth is being supported by the establishment of ESGlinked funds, sustainable indices and by an evolving regulatory environment. The sustain-
able finance market is also being driven by investors who are increasingly gravitating towards ESG-linked assets, partly on the premise that they outperform over the long term. Standard Bank has
recognised that sustainability-linked loans present a growing business opportunity for both the bank and its corporate clients. These instruments incentivise sustainable and responsible corporate behaviour by linking the cost of
funding to the achievement of certain predetermined ESG targets. We seek to partner in funding deals that unlock green projects and that enable social projects that reduce inequality.

PERSONAL WEES GEWAARSKU!!

WHS would like to thank all the schools, parents and archers who participated and everyone who made this shoot possible and a great success. Thank you to all the BAI's (Basic Archery Instructors) who spent his or her Saturday in the sun making sure everyone is safe. NASP Namibia would also like to inform that due to Covid-19 we will not be able to do the NASP Africa Tournament (NAT) in May. We would like all the countries to participate, and the only way that might be possible, is if we postpone it until December 2021. Blue Waters Sports Clubs' Condolences On Passing Of Eliphas 'oupapa' Shipanga Blue Waters Sports Club is saddened by the news of the passing of former player and coach Eliphas 'Oupapa' Shipanga on Tuesday evening. The club, on behalf of the executive committee, members, technical team, players and supporters extends its deepest condolences to the Shipanga and Blue Water families and those who played with him during his playing days. Bazooka, as he was affectionately known, was a man of the people who valued and treated all human beings equally, regardless of their social standing. Not many sports personalities have the unique privilege of having played an impactful role in our country's sports fraternity like he did. He went from player to coaching some of the biggest teams in the country such as Blue Waters and Tigers FC and occupied
several roles at a national level, such as serving as the secretary general of NFA. Club chairman Robert Shimooshili speaking on behalf of Blue Waters said: “We are saddened by the passing of Mr Shipanga. We will all agree that he was a visionary man who wanted nothing but the best for Namibian sports. His guidance and wisdom as one of the Blue Waters elders over the years has helped the club to grow from strength to strength. We are grateful to him for the years he spent at Blue Waters.” Eliphas Shipanga will always be part of the Blue Waters family. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

The Braaimaster Individual Stableford Only a small field of 30 players turned out for the Braaimaster Individual Stableford play on Saturday 27 February at the Walvis Bay Golf Course. Winner and probably a new handicap was Pieter Heunis on 41 points with Koot Potgieter winning the count out from Pieter Fox on 38 points. Boel Grobelaar was actually second on 39 points but was not able to be at the prize giving. A good few guys were in the mix after the first 9 but alas the proverbial wheels came off and they faded into the setting sun. There was no jackpot winners and three two clubs, Pieter Fox, David Peake and Tungeni Mupupa. Probably the high light of the day was a 5 pointer on number 6, stroke 1. For obvious reasons no name can be published, and even then he could not win the jackpot – say no more. We thank Vicus Jooste from Braaimaster for the awesome prizes on the day, and look forward to next year. The Artisan Bakery Wednesday competition seems to be drawing a few extra players and also good golf is being played. Last week it was Anton Welgemoed who won on 22 points and there were 6 players on 21 points and thus the count out were used to determine that Pieter Fox was second and Christo Muller was third. All players are reminded of the Lions Club fundraiser on Friday 5 March, you may contact Emile Vilbert or Impi Brand for more info and details. It is a shotgun start at 12h00, please note new starting time.
