Beware of tribalism Tweya warning
The Lions Old Age Home in Swakopmund is forced to increase its security measures drastically after one of their residents, an 81 year old pensioner, was brutally assaulted during a break-in. The amount of break-ins in Swakopmund increased over the past few weeks. The incident can only be described as unheard of for Swakopmund, yet it is testimony to the aggression of burglars. Two men broke into the old age home and after their attack managed to get away with only N$4. The incident transpired in the early hours of Wednesday last week. “It might have been my mistake, because I accidentally left the window open,” said the 81 year-old pensioner in Continues on page 2
Corruption, poverty and tribalism are Namibia’s invisible enemy Piquet Jacobs While acknowledging the bravery and sacrifice of Namibian heroes during the armed struggle, President Hage Geingob pointed out that the true way of honouring the fallen is to preserve what these men and women fought for. “In commemorating the bravery of our heroes and heroines on this Heroes Day, let us take time to reflect on what they fought for. Due to their sacrifices, today we are living in a country founded on the principles of effective governance, respect for the rule of law, respect for human life, dignity, and unity. It is one thing honouring our heroes and heroines with statues, monuments, songs and well-articulated tributes, however, if we truly want to honour the memory of our valiant sons and daughters, then the best way to do that is to preserve and build upon the principles they fought for,” Geingob said to the Continues on page 2

Pensioner attacked Continued from page 1 an interview with namib times. Even though the old age home is surrounded by an electric fence and has a security guard on duty 24 hours a day, this did not deter the burglars. “It seems they were in total three men,” the pensioner continued. He recalled waking up on the said morning at about 1:30 when he heard a “strange noise in his living room.” “When I came out of my bedroom to investigate I saw two young men standing in the room. One was busy disconnecting my TV,” he said. He screamed at the men and one of the perpetrators immediately jumped out the window and ran off. One of the burglars was outside as a guard. The third man didn't follow though. “He grabbed me by the arm and hit me once in the face,” the pensioner continued. When namib times visited the victim yesterday his entire right side of the face was still bloodshot and swollen – almost a week after the incident. A scuffle ensured and the victim noticed the man wanting to grab something out of his pocket. “I grabbed his arm and kept asking him to leave the knife. What was I supposed to do as an old man?” he asked. The burglar kept saying “Where's the money,” he recalled; and: “I didn't have any money though. I only had a few coins I use to buy a newspaper. It was about N$4.” The pensioner showed the burglar to the money which he grabbed. By that time the resident managed to get hold of the panic button. “After the alarm went off the man jumped through the window and ran off too,” he said. “We took the resident to our frail care and he was treated by the nurses,” said Remy Moens, managing director at the Lions Old Age Home to namib times. Since the incident he has taken immediate steps to step up security at the entire complex. Forming part of this the electric fence will be upgraded. “The security of our residents is our first priority, which is why we have embarked on a few initiatives and upgrades,” Moens said. The victim made a case of housebreaking, yet no arrest has been made to date.

The vessel was successfully refloated on 28 July and final preparations were made by divers and salvage crews of Walvis Bay Diving and Marine Services for the vessel to be lifted out of the water on Thursday. The salvage operation was a big success and one of many similar projects by which Walvis Bay Diving distinguished itself in recent years. crowds who had gathered at the Kuisebmond stadium. The event was very well attended by dignitaries and citizens alike, who all gathered to officially commemorate veterans of the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN). Heroes Day is a national public holiday in Namibia, recognized by the United Nations as Namibia Day and is annually celebrated on 26 August. This was the first time that the event was hosted in the Erongo region. “Every day we witness scores of people who are being killed, while others risk death to flee their countries of birth, never to return again. In Namibia, these nightmare scenarios are a distant memory, and many of our younger generations
are unable to relate to such horrible situations,” Geingob noted on the peace and stability Namibia strives to. The President expressed his concern on problems at hand, referring to them as the enemy. “Unfortunately, today's enemies are invisible. They have no soldiers or armies and they have no form or shape. These enemies, such as poverty, corruption, and tribalism, coupled with independent intervening variables such as drought and looming energy crisis, cannot be defeated by armies. They can only be defeated through the collective effort of each and every Namibian such as the one displayed by our heroes during the struggle. Therefore, we must all become combatants in this modern day war.”

Four arrested for allegedly killing an alleged burglar Erwin Leuschner
The police arrested three male and one female suspects on Saturday after they allegedly killed an alleged burglar with knobkieries. The body of the deceased was found in the DRC in Swakopmund, lying next to an abandoned house on Saturday morning. The incident was confirmed to namib times yesterday by Detective Chief Inspector Erastus Iikuyu of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in Walvis Bay. According to preliminary reports the victim in this matter was allegedly trying to break into a ghetto on Saturday morning at about 3:00. “It seems that the owner of the shack called his neigh-
bours for assistance,” he said. The neighbours thereafter searched for the alleged burglar and found him hiding behind another shack. “It is alleged that the four people then beat the victim with a knobkierie,” Iikuyu
continued. After the incident the neighbours allegedly went back to sleep leaving the victim behind. “It seems that the victim walked away from the scene, only to collapse after about 30 metres from where he passed
away,” Iikuyu said. The body was found on Saturday morning at about 8:00 by a member of the public lying behind a house. There was blood coming from the nose. “We arres-ted the four suspects and they have been
charged with murder,” Iikuyu continued. The police was not yet able to trace the family of the deceased. The victim is believed to be between 25 and 35 years of age. He was a Makalani seller known only as
“Axas”. The police also recorded a suicide over the long weekend which also transpired in DRC in Swakopmund. According to Iikuyu, 40 year-old Victor Watota was found hanging by a rope around his neck in a
shack he was renting. “The body was discovered yesterday at about 12:00 by the land-lord who had not seen the lessee since Saturday,” Iikuyu said. The police is investigating the case.

Double dose of misfortune for Namibian Dolphin Project Researchers
Researchers from the Namibian Dolphin Project were victim to a break in on Friday morning at their researchers accommodation situated along the Walvis Bay Lagoon. The Namibian Dolphin Project is a group of university affiliated researchers, students and interns, who conduct research on whales and dolphins along the Namibian coastline. The project is based year around in Walvis Bay and has an education office at the Walvis Bay water front. Burglars removed security bars from the cottage window and gained access to the residence whilst Dr Simon Elwen and several research interns were fast asleep. The break in was particularly poor timing for the project, as several computers were on site as data were being backed up following a successful field season. In total 4 laptops, a hard drive, and many personal items belonging to the project director, Dr Elwen were stolen including his ID documents, wallet and phone. Luckily no one was injured during this break in. We are appealing to members of the Walvis Bay community to please keep an eye out for the following electronics and contact the police if such items are on sale in second hand shops, or on the street etc: HP Envy 17 Laptop, Lenovo G50-80 80E5 S/N PF081TD7, Fujitsu Laptop Lifebook A-series - serial no.: YL9P174781, Apple Macbook Pro C02GMJ2LDV13, 2 external 2 TB hard drives containing images of dolphins and other data, wallet and ID documents for Dr Simon Elwen. Although some items were insured, it will not be possible to replace all equipment through insurers. Therefore we would welcome the support of local businesses or individuals with spare computing equipment or those wanting to donated to the research project. Further details about the project and ways to support can be found on www.namibiandolphinproject.com or our facebook page: https://www.facebook. com/Namibian-Dolphin-Project. In light of these unfortunate events, we are particularly grateful to Werner and Rika from Battle of the Dunes for their recent donation to the Namibian Dolphin Project. Meanwhile, it was confirmed that the same researchers that were victim to this burglary were also victim to a motor car crash at Omaruru on Sunday afternoon. The vehicle which they were travelling in to Erindi Game Lodge was involved in a rear-end collision with a South African registered vehicle. The researchers were lightly injured and was discharged from Omaruru Hospital after being examined by a local medical practitioner.

Long Beach Neighbourhood Watch please clean up this mess - resident
Dozens of old concrete railway sleepers are dotting Long Beach in unsightly heaps, after the municipality of Walvis Bay had it removed where the Long Beach Neighbourhood Watch laid and planted it upright at various spots along the beach front in recent weeks to keep vehicles off the beach and public open spaces. The municipality had it removed after it transpired the Long Beach Neighbourhood Watch acted without the necessary authority. The municipality had it removed as vehicles have access to the tidal pools near Dolphin Park by a designated road that was also illegally closed off with the sleepers. “The Long Beach Neighbourhood Watch is responsible for these unsightly heaps of railway sleepers that can cause harm to children and even damage vehicles. They admitted on the organisation’s Facebook they are confused over the bye law of the municipality pertaining to public open spaces and that they erred in planting and placing these sleepers illegally. The Neighbourhood Watch should immediately clear the areas of these sleepers”, a resident of Long Beach said over the weekend describing the Long Beach Neighbourhood Watch as an organisation that has been reduced in recent months to arm chair activists and people using the organisation to forward their own agendas at Long Beach.

Tweya warns against tribalism Sharlien Tjambari
During his visit to Erongo Region last week Thursday the Minister of Information and Communication and Technology (MICT) Mr. Tjekero Tweya said tribalism and acts disguised to promote tribalism have been instigated against the Namibian Government together with its line ministries and agencies, traditional leaders and amongst different communities and individuals left the Nation in shock and dismay. “Tribalising the Namibian Government as an Ovambo Government and further, disrespecting Namibian leaders brushing them aside as minorities and insulting them should be condemned with all the contempt it deserves. Such conduct and attitude has no place of honour in this country,” Tweya added. He also said the Nation is reminded that for the last 26 years of Namibia's independence the Namibian government has indisputably been elected and accepted by the majority of all Namibians without any allegiance to race, tribe or religious orientation. Tweya further said that no amount of falsehoods will win any Namibian favour and fame, especially those who have remained in a preindependence era. It should be a duty call for all Namibians to direct their energy towards nation build-
ing. According to Tweya cognisant of this fact, the Namibian Government therefore does not qualify to be tribalised and insulted under any imagination. The Namibian government has committed itself Under Oath to serve, defend and protect all Namibians as equal citizens before the law. In pursuit of this commitment the government has strived to create an environment conducive for peace and stability promulgating laws to enshrine the observance and protection of basic human rights of association, culture, religion, trade, conservation etc. by and for all Namibians. “At independence, our Founding President and Father of the Nation, His Excellency, Dr President Sam Nujoma unveiled a Policy of National Reconciliation as an insurance for the realisation of these values. This is a policy that our former President
His Excellency Dr Hifikepunye Pohamba also continued to entrench for peace and stability. The Current President, His Excellency, Dr Hage Geingob announced the policy of inclusivity in the Namibian house. Practical meaning has been given to all these policies by appointing all Namibians into ministerial and other high ranking Government offices and agency positions. Tweya also said that these tribalist divisive tactics are aimed to mislead communities against the government and amongst the nation. These tribal insinuations are a curse that the Namibian government and all peace loving Namibians should condemn. Tribal incitements of this nature have pushed other nations into ghastly hardships and suffering. Namibia will not be victim to such actions. The Namibian citizens are urged to refrain from any of the
evils of racialism, tribalism and all the …isms. As an elected servant of the people of Namibia the government will do everything in its power under the authority of the constitution of the Republic to protect and defend the rights of all Namibians to practice their culture. The Government calls upon all Namibians with divisive attitudes to immediately refrain from inciting general disorder and violence against unsuspecting peace loving Namibians. “We should be aware
that hate speeches towards elected and other traditional leaders carry the danger
of provoking citizens and subjects of such traditional leaders to rise in defence of
themselves or their leaders in word and action,” Tweya concludes.

Last week Wednesday the Dead Men Riding Bikers Ministry handed over a cheque worth N$5000, a contribution towards Welwitchia Phase 2 Government Housing units for independent lower income older persons of the Ministry of Health and Social Services, which is in dire need of a boundary wall. The senior citizens at Welwitchia Phase 2 have decided to raise funds to build a boundary wall. Cecilia Holtzhausen who initiated the project of building the boundary wall for the senior citizens said it is very important that the senior citizens are looked after, “because without them none of us would have been here today”. According to Holtzhausen the main reason why she initiated the project of raising funds for the boundary wall is because of the numerous break-ins at Welwitchia Phase 2 as a result of poor fencing and thieves come and go as they please, because they are aware that the senior citizens live alone and are helpless, especially the ladies who live alone. Recently two men were arrested while trying to break into a lady's apartment. The Dead Men Riding Bikers Ministry thanked their sponsors for their donations and also all the bikers who came to support their charity run earlier this year, regardless of the east weather that day “once a year we have a charity run to help the people in need in our community. It is an honour to bless Welwitchia Phase 2 with this donation” adds Mr. Pieter Sass, the President of Dead Men Riding Bikers Ministry. Holtzhausen says they are still looking for more donations, whether it is in the form of cash or building materials (cement, sand, stones and bricks). Anyone willing to sponsor financially must deposit the money in the following account: First National Bank, Welwitchia Trust Fund, branch Code 282172. Account number: 55100032544 and the reference is 37061/ your name or surname for reference.
A zero tolerance policy will be implemented by traffic officials over the weekend whilst patrolling and making use of roadblocks, with a specific eye on drunk drivers, speeding, drivers talking on cellphones and drivers not wearing seatbelts.Erika Glück zero tolerance my ass- we drove to Swakop yesterday and the roads were extremely busy plus the usual 160km/h drivers almost driving into you from the back and guess what? NOT A SINGLE SPEED TRAP OR POLICE OFFICER IN SIGHT!! Erika Glück Ndjamba Seeub Maru So every time a VIP travels traffic officers are busy assisting them and the carnage on the road carries on? That is no excuse, then more officers are needed. Every day people die on our roads!! Police visibility should be there 365 days a year and not only on long weekends etc. - we have deaths 365 days a year on all roads, many because of speeding and reckless driving, we travel quite a lot, most times not on long weekends and believe me most times there is no police visibility. Many VIP's have speeches and talk about road safety, well then they must put their money where their mouths are and start somewhere. There are a lot of people in Namibia looking for work, train them as safety officers and get the job done, but hell if all officials are busy with VIP's and people can drive like maniacs and steal and plunder because there is no police presence then we as a country certainly have our priorities wrong. A country's police force can't come to a standstill because they are busy escorting VIP people. Janet En John Rhall SO TRUE... Caroline Camm True that.
