at TransNamib should live by, as the company is on a turnaround strategy to double freight volumes and revenues over the next five years.

At the launch that took place last Wednesday at the main railway station at Windhoek, the CEO of TransNamib, Johny Smit, admitted the public perception about TransNamib is “not fantastic”. Smit further admitted the first positive signs of growth mentioned at the outset is still insignificant in terms of what still has to be done in the next five years, it represents a positive start.

The new corporate image, explained Smith, symbolises a new era and should become synonymous with future growth and success of TransNamib.

The new corporate identity must assist firstly to turnaround negative public perceptions about the rail carrier, but it will according to Smith also greatly assist to communicate growth in TransNamib and assist with the growth of a customer base to help capture the 5 years objectives.

“The launch of our new TransNamib logo and brand signals an important milestone for us, as we now need to use this new brand to build our future and a growth story that is creating value for its shareholder, economy and country.

“Rail it” is a promise. The new image is expected to allow TransNamib the opportunity to galvanize characteristics like “reliability”, “bulk freight mover”, “safe transporter”, “uncongested rail” and “unlimited capacity” into the customer's mind.

Smith in his keynote addressed said for too long TransNamib was not moving forward and this is a clean slate to transform the national rail carrier in every aspect.

On the issue of cost of implementing the new corporate identity for TransNamib: Smith explained it will be phased in as part of the rail carrier's maintenance program over the next five years, in order to balance “the talk” with “the walk”.

With growing its business and profits, Smith said TransNamib's approach is to work closer with customers and to look for solutions together. The aim is mutual cost-effectiveness, reliability and volume driven whether it is from port to railway station or from railway station to railway station.

“We want to create more value through movement of bulk commodities that enhances customer and company value, but also enhance national values like safer roads because rail is the answer for mass cargo transit.

More economic potential unlocked for Swakopmund Isaac Chikosi

Although tourism is among Swakopmund's main economic contributors, diversification is needed to optimise opportunities in mining, agriculture, a services industry and to position the town as a tertiary education hub.

This was said recenlty by the CEO of Swakopmund municipality Mr Archie Benjamin who addressed a business breakfast at the Swakopmund Plaza Hotel, organised by the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) Swakopmund branch, Swakop Uranium and FNB Namibia.

The occasion of the business breakfast was used to inform the business community on the Municipality's development plan, which touched on tourism, mining, manufacturing and agriculture, amongst other topics. Mr Benjamin was accompanied by senior municipal officials, NCCI branch representatives, Swakop Uranium management as well as FNB Namibia senior staff.

Benjamin began by highlighting Council's key performance areas which include financial sustainability, land and housing delivery, good governance, public participation, local economic development, municipal institutional development and basic service delivery; citing that the vision is, “To provide and maintain safe, sufficient and affordable services for residents and visitors and promote future development to the benefit of our community.”

With tourism being one of Swakopmund's biggest attractions, there is need to consider mining, agriculture and even a tertiary education hub that serves as an industry-based institution, to see inclusive partnerships with existing institutions such as COSDEF. In addition, while enhancing the tourism sector, Council envisions an Incentivised Industrial Zone which will focus on manufacturing, packaging and assembly. With cooperation between council and stakeholders such as banks and businesses, the realisation of these plans is possible.

With regards to agriculture, Benjamin challenged businesses to be innovative and work with Council in this regard saying greenhouses could be a likely option given Swakopmund's climate.

According to Benjamin, all of this can be done whilst preserving Swakopmund's culture and heritage evident largely in its unique architectural buildings.

This would see the coastal town of Swakopmund developing into a smart city with high quality of life, promotion of social and technological innovation, incorporation of new transport, traffic and energy concepts while keeping development balanced across the town.

To date council has secured 140 hectares of serviced land and are embarking on various house building projects.

The breakfast meeting was indeed a breath of fresh air for business people, stakeholders and members of the public who expressed their appreciation and gratitude for a renewed drive and focus on making Swakopmund the preferred Namibian town for investors and visitors alike and to attract skilled and talented people.

Municipality’s insurance company must foot the bill of crane operator’s insurer

The holes were excavated for insurance experts to satisfy their opinion over ground stability in the area after a 200 ton crane toppled on the parking lot at the municipality's library in August 2016, leading to massive damages.

The crane was damaged, several cars were flattened and a massive functions tent of a well-known caterer was damaged. It was sheer grace that fateful day that no one was injured or killed in the incident that

happened on a busy work day.

On account of client confidentiality and the fact these insurance claims are handled by the legal departments of several insurance companies, detailed information to the media and the public is

limited. What was established though is that the crane's collapse could be attributed to the fact that the crane operator, Walvis Bay Plant & Tool Hire, was never informed of a main water pipeline of the municipality of Walvis Bay that runs

beneath the parking lot's surface. The crane's one stabiliser was subsequently placed on the water line without the operator realising the critical situation that was about to develop.

Under the immense weight of the crane, the water pipeline collapsed and the stabiliser placed directly on the line could no more support the crane's weight and balance. The crane toppled over with its boom extended to the

maximum. The falling crane destroyed everything in its path.

“We are not at liberty to discuss any specifics”, said one insurance company's representative yesterday. What did transpire though is that the insurance company representing Walvis Bay Plant and Tool Hire paid out the claim. This insurance company subsequently seeks the claim paid out to be reimbursed by the municipality of Walvis Bay's insurers as the

municipality was at fault by failing to point out to the crane operator the exact location

of the water pipeline.

As a direct result the water line collapsed and the crane toppled.

Tyre blow out results in Isaac Chikosi fatal accident

Court Swakopmund Court Report Lukas Tjongarero (32), Festus Nambinga (28), appeared on charges of housebreaking with intent to steal and theft.

The accused remain in police custody.

The matter was postponed to 3 July for plea.

David Shapumba Simon (21), appeared on a charge of murder. Bail was set at N$5 000.

The accused is warned to appear at Swakopmund Regional Court on 1 November 2019 Desiline GugowaB (26), appeared in charges of dealing in cocaine. The case was postponed to 15 May 2019 for plea.

Thurupallan Kumaren Govender (37), Appeared on charges of assault by

threat. The accused was found guilty and sentenced.

Johannes Afrikaaner (27), appeared on charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. The matter was postponed to 8 May 2019for further investigations.

Abriel Kapweya (33), Gabriel Kanditi (29), Kondjeni James (32), appeared on counts of robbery.

The accused remain in police custody. Matter was postponed to 8 May 2019 for plea.

Mukwanwa Mathe (26), appeared on charges of driving with an excessive breath alcohol level. Bail was set at N$4 000.

David Mulengwa (23), appeared on charges of possession of cocaine.

Matter was postponed to 22 July 2019 for lab results.

A 33-year-old woman Florida Talana Areses, passed away on Sunday after a seven-seater motor vehicle overturned about 15 kilometres from Omaruru.

According to Erongo regional crimes coordinator Erastus Iikuyu, the driver of the vehicle, Gabusire McLean (24) was travelling from Otjiwarongo to Walvis Bay when the rear tyre allegedly burst resulting in the driver losing control of the vehicle. Two other passengers, Kavises Debora (23) and five-year-old Gabusie McLean sustained slight injuries.

A case of culpable homicide and reckless or negligent driving has been opened. The deceased's next of kin have been informed. The body was taken to Walvis Bay Police Mortuary for post mortem examination as investigations continue.

Mentally-unstable Woman Isaac Chikosi assaulted A Keetmanshoop resident was allegedly assaulted in the Usab Location in Karibib on Saturday during the early hours of the morning.

According to reports, Sofia Nanas Cloete (28), was about to go home from a bar in the area, when an unknown suspect allegedly invited her to another bar for a beer.

It is further alleged that once they were outside the bar, “the suspect pulled the victim towards the railway tracks, where he assaulted her and had sexual intercourse with her without her consent.�

Cloete was rushed to Karibib clinic for medical treatment. The suspect is still unknown at this stage and the police therefore appeals to public and anyone with information regarding this case to contact Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu on 081 246 4757 or DWO Simson Nghiteeka on 081 384 6896 or any nearest Police station.

Bribery attempt lands Chinese national behind bar Isaac Chikosi

A Chinese National ran out of luck on Friday morning when he tried to bribe a Municipality Traffic Officer on duty. The 39-year-old Bian Yangquan, was allegedly apprehended for driving without a valid driver's license along Union street in Walvis Bay. Yangquan is alleged to have offered the officer a N$200 note to avoid receiving a fine. He was immediately arrested. During his appearance at Walvis Bay Magistrate Court yesterday morning, his matter was postponed to 25 July for the Prosecutor General's decision.

Otto Herrigel Trust calls upon coastal supermarkets for voluntary charge on shopping bags The Otto Herrigel Trust initiated a successful program in December 2018 for supermarkets in Swakopmund to introduce a voluntary charge on supermarket plastic bags. With this gaining rapid momentum, the Trust now approached supermarkets in Walvis Bay and Henties Bay to do the same. The Trust said this in a recent media statement and said the initiative is critical to have continuity along the coast in the quest to wean consumers from the use of plastics (pictured top right: the alternative to shopping plastic bags).

The statement reads further: “from the 1st of May the Supermarkets in Walvis Bay and Henties Bay will charge N$1 for a plastic bag. All proceeds of the sales will be given to local charities. Spar in Swakopmund have already donated money to the Old Age Homes and to the Farmers Drought Relief.

Swakopmund retailers reported figures of up to an 80% reduction on plastic bags being taken away. We hope that soon no more plastic bags will end up in the sea or fly around in the desert.

We encourage all other retailers along the coast and in the whole of the country to do the same for the sake of Namibia's environment. You as a retailer have the right to charge for Plastic Bags without permission from any other entity. It is your decision alone.”

Closed for a year Sharlien Tjambari Sam Nujoma Avenue (the main street) was closed last week at the entrance of town for a period of one year, to allow for the rehabilitation of the road-over-rail bridge.

This bridge for decades served as the iconic entrance into the coastal town, but time and the elements have worn her down and she is in urgent need of rehabilitation, Hileni Fillemon, the Manager: Corporate Communication of the Roads Authority confirmed this week.

This segment of the main street will only open again for traffic on 30 April 2020.

“The bridge was observed to be damaged and shows structural stress which necessitate immediate rehabilitation as a safety measure. The road is closed at the beginning of the bridge, at the intersection of Aukas Street and Sam Nujoma Street and also at the traffic circle near Truck Port Engine Service Station”, it was explained.

Namibia beats Zambia Rudi Bowe The Namibian senior women's hockey team hosted a very physical and fit Zambian women's team in three international test matches from 20 to 22 April in Windhoek.

Namibia beat the Zambians 3-0 in the series that was made possible by Standard Bank Namibia.

All the games were played at the Davin Trustco Hockey Field at Windhoek High School.

Namibia won the first game 5-1, the second game 3-1 and the third game they trashed the Zambian women 6-1.

Top goal Scorer was Kiana Cormack with 6 goals and player of the Tournament Jivanka Kruger.

Namibia's youngest withdraw After Graham Snyman and Will Esterhuizen (jnr) withdrew from the men's National Bowls team that is due to participate in the Atlantic Championships in Wales next month, they were replaced by Will's father, Willie Esterhuizen, and JP Fouche.

The Tournament is a qualifier for World Bowls.

While Willie Esterhuizen is a seasoned bowler who has represented Namibia many times in the past, JP Fouche is like a breath of fresh air, as he is only 17years- old.

JP was in Bloemfontein participating in the South African National under 20 tournament when he got the news that he had been chosen to play for Namibia in the National team. When asked if he ever expected this to happen he replied that it was quite overwhelming when he heard he had been chosen. “It was definitely unexpected,”he said.

Fouche will play in the Fours discipline, and in the Pairs discipline with the other young bowler in the team, Cabous Olivier (19).

He was asked, “Do you think your youth will be an advantage?” His reply, “Cabous and I have played together before and I believe we make a formidable team regardless of our age.” He feels that bowls is a sport with no age or gender restrictions, a game of skill and strategic tactics, not just “rolling some bowls”.

“It's an art and skill that takes an immense amount of practice.

Therefore starting at a young age is truly beneficial.”

His feelings regarding the Namibian team is that they are a group of talented bowlers and he believes that they have what it takes to qualify for World Bowls in Australia.

“I feel honoured to represent Namibia in my first international event and will use this opportunity to give my utmost best.”

The Namib Race 'the race of champions' is the first of the 4 Desert races. It started Sunday 28 April at the Ugabmund and will end on 4 May at the 259 kilometres mark near Torra Bay. The 16 previous champions that are part of 110 competitors from 36 countries from around the world, entered the Skeleton Coast National Park for the 259 km. 6 stage ultra marathon race across the oldest desert in the world.

Racing The Planet and the 4 Deserts Ultra marathon Series was founded in February 2002 by American Mary Gadams. A former investment banker and strategist by day, Gadams was a wellknown figure in adventure and endurance sport with finishes in numerous marathons, ultra marathons and wilderness competitions around the world.

The 4 Deserts is the world's leading roughcountry endurance footrace series with a unique collection of world-class events that take place in the largest and most forbidding deserts on the planet with only drinking water and a place in a tent each night to rest.

The competitors are supported by highly qualified staff, all with experience in hiking, marathons and ultra marathons, and medical teams specialising in wilderness medicine. The competitor must carry all their own equipment and food for the seven days in a backpack with an average weight of between 5 and 14 kilograms.
