Walvis Bay’s water supply not in any danger at the moment

Kuiseb’s flow level dropped significantly in the last 48-hours. No flood danger to water infrastructure The Kuiseb River’s flow has significantly dropped in the last 48-hours, thereby eliminating any immediate threat to Walvis Bay’s water supply. Namibia’s water utility, NamWater, confirmed yesterday that the river’s level was at 30cm deep at the Gobabeb Desert Research Station at 09:00 yesterday, from a flow depth of 1,23 meters a day earlier on Wednesday morning at 09:00. “The Kuiseb’s flow subsided significantly since Wednesday morning. If there is no further rains in the catchment areas the flow will stop entirely”, a NamWater source confirmed. NamWater measures the river’s flow at several locations, but the measuring point at Gobabeb is the most important one to indicate the River’s strength once it reaches the bulk water infrastructure downstream in the Rooibank and Swartbank areas.
The majority of NamWater’s bulk water supply infrastructure, supplying Walvis Bay with potable water,, is located in the Kuiseb River. When the river is in full flow, due to rains in its catchment area in the Khomas Hochland, some of the water supply infrastructure can be flooded or washed away. When the infrastructure is damaged, NamWater cannot supply bulk water to Walvis Bay’s municipal reservoir at Mile 7. The town then suffers water shortages, often for days on end. NamWater however, made significant investments since 2011 to mitigate the effect of the periodic flooding of the Kuiseb. That included stabilising power pylons with concrete foun-

School closes after only two days Covid-case Simon Shapaka
The Namibian Police in Erongo has launched a manhunt for two armed robbers, Simon Fillipus Shapaka and Tobias Iyambo (also known as Gabes). Schools across Namibia started the 2021 academic year in full-swing on Tuesday. Erongo Region is no exception. Thousands of learners were happy to be back at school after the Covid-19 pandemic turned the 2020 academic year upside down. Although social distancing and masks are compulsory to ensure learners are protected against the spread of the Coronavirus, children were happy to be back at schools for contact teaching, to see their friends and teachers again and just to feel normality slowly but surely returning to Namibian society. For many this is their first year at school, starting Grade 1. On the picture: Mrs Mahua of the Namib Primary School with her Grade 1 pupils.
They overpowered a foreign national in Walvis Bay’s Theo-Ben Gurirab Street last Friday, threatened him with a knife, and robbed him of N$30 000 in cash, a bank card and a passport. The thugs used a taxi as a getaway car. The Police in the meantime made a breakthrough and arrested the taxi driver. That led to the identification of Shapaka and Continues on page 2

Water supply Continued from page 1 dations to prevent the water flow knocking out power supply to the water pumps in the river. Additionally, stretches of water pipeline have been embedded into the riverbed at a depth of 3 metres, to prevent the pipes from being washed away. Walvis Bay has now gone for close to a decade without major water supply disruptions due to the flooding Kuiseb. The Walvis Bay municipality also commissioned a new, 20 million liters water reservoir at Mile 7 two years ago. Together with the existing water reservoir at Mile 7, Walvis Bay has at least two days’ reserve water supply (at full capacity) at any given time. The NamWater pipeline east of the dune belt between the Kuiseb River and Swakopmund has also been adapted in recent years to be able to carry water from the Erongo Desalination Plant to Walvis Bay. The pipeline can however, only handle limited volumes of water, as the pipeline was originally designed for a one-way flow from the Kuiseb to Swakomund and not vice versa. The water pipeline is also old, and there is always the risk of a catastrophic rupture if the water flow is reversed, a senior municipal official at Walvis Bay explained to Namib Times on Wednesday.

Iyambo. Shapaka is also wanted for an armed robbery at the Pumba Service Station in Kuisebmond in September last year. The public’s assistance is requested to get these thugs off the streets. Should you have any information on their whereabouts, contact Detective Chief Inspector Johannes Mwatongwe at 081 246 1121 or Detective Warrant Officer Sam Shitima at 081 304 9064 or report at your nearest police station.
Samaritans turn out in numbers for hungry horses Eileen van der Schyff It started as a trip out to Rooibank to view the Kuiseb River flowing. It ended in a spectacular mission of mercy in which people opened their hearts to save seven horses severely weakened by months of drought.
Pictured: a deeply thankful Len Kooitjie and his mother Diane with Collette Nell. Another picture shows one of the horses and Vox collecting the first donated lucerne
A group of people recently traveled to the Rooibank area on Saturday (23 January) to see the Kuiseb River flowing. They spotted seven horses, including a foal, near Homeb. The animals are skinny and it was clear the animals were severely undernourished. One person in the group, Colette Nell, is a horse lover and were so touched by what she saw, she responded: “I wish I had food to give to these horses.” Nell's life partner, Bono Vox, decided to add action to the words. Not knowing the origin of the horses, Nell took pictures of the animals
and sent it to her mother to post on Facebook. Very soon a certain Nikki Guther saw the post and requested to share it on her Facebook account. She posted: “We are trying to arrange grass bales for some very emaciated horses out at Homeb. We have someone driving out this weekend that is willing to bring the grass to them. If you have any grass bales to spare or would like to contribute.” It was at this point that Guther's post went viral and assistance started to pour in at overwhelming rate. “My phone started to ring non-stop since the post of social media. It is amazing how many people offered assistance. In the meantime, the Namib Times was also alerted of the situation and after a brief investigation established the horses belong to Mr. Len Kooitjie who has his homestead near Homeb. When contacted Mr. Kooitjie said he is in a dire situation with the animals, as the drought
require him to feed the horses. Although he has a lucerne patch going at his homestead, it is not sufficient to feed the horses. Kooitjie lost his means of income during the Covid-19 lockdown and was grateful for the assistance to feed his animals. Vox collected the first consignment of lucerne, sponsored by Rossi Schommarz of Swakopmund, on Wednesday. Nell, her mother Hannelie Engelbrecht and Kooitjie drove out to the homestead at Homeb yesterday and the horses began to feed. Some of the other institutions and individuals that got involved are Rix Transport from Windhoek, Chante Nell from Grootfontein, Transpartners Namibia and Optic Exclusive, Apache Appaloosa Ranch, Grant Cloete of SA Scale Company, Christiana Hass, Heino Pascheka, and Lionel Smith, Chante Nell and Heather Craemer. If you can assist, kindly contact Collette Nell at 081 410 5522.

Walvis Bay boasts its first brick-paving intersection The blacktop surface of the intersection between Nangol Mbumba Drive and 5th Road in Walvis Bay has been replaced by heavy-duty brick paving. This is to minimise the impact of salt trucks and other heavy vehicles on the road surface of this particular intersection. A total of 55 000 brick pavers were used to complete the job. Walvis Bay Salt Refiners announced last year that it would fund the project, as it recognises the impact salt trucks have on the street surface on this intersection. Salt is hauled daily from the salt pans to the port of Walvis Bay, using Kovambo Nujoma Avenue and then 5th Road that leads to the port's south gate. The project was completed recently in conjunction with the municipality of Walvis Bay, WML (Coast) Consulting Engineers and K Neumaier Construction. With salt production output increasing, approximately 1 million tons of salt could be hauled between the salt pans and the port of Walvis Bay in the foreseeable future. Walvis Bay Salt Refiners is constantly looking at innovations to minimise the impact of its salt transport operations on Walvis Bay's street infrastructure. The Managing Director of Walvis Bay Salt Holdings, Mr André Snyman said that the Salt Holdings is proud to be associated with the upgrading of the intersection. At a small ceremony recently to mark the completion of the project, the Managing Director of Walvis Bay Salt Holdings, Mr André Snyman, said a number of new hi-tech salt hauling trucks would be introduced in the near future. This new generation “smart trucks” are twenty-seven metres long and has the carrying capacity to reduce the number of daily trips between the salt pans and the port of Walvis Bay by almost half. The vehicles have a wider turning circle and would reduce the impact on any road surface. The trucks will also generate less noise, and less greenhouse gas emissions. Snyman further reassured Walvis Bay residents that Walvis Bay Salt Holdings will continue to look at solutions to reduce the impact bulk salt hauling has on certain segments of Walvis Bay's public infrastructure. “We will not hesitate to embrace new concepts and new technology as it develops. Bear with us”, concluded Snyman. The General Manager of Roads and Building Control at the Municipality of Walvis Bay, Mr André Burger, explained the brick paving surface would better protect the road surface from deforming under the wheels of heavy vehicles. It has a better resistance against the torque of vehicle- and truck wheels. The newly elected mayor of Walvis Bay, Cllr Trevino Forbes, also attended the ceremony and expressed his satisfaction with the initiative taken by Walvis Bay Salt Holdings to invest in protecting the harbour town's public infrastructure. Cllr Forbes encouraged the private sector to engage in more such public-private initiatives with the municipality of Walvis Bay. “I believe the rate of development of any town plays an important role in the country's overall stability and growth”, the mayor said. Cllr. Forbes assured residents that the newly elected town council of Walvis Bay is committed to improve Walvis Bay's infrastructure, including much needed housing.

Several drug arrests across Concealment of birth Erongo A 29-year-old woman has been arrested at Karibib for alleged concealment of birth.
The Namibian Police made several cannabis-related drug arrests at several towns in the Erongo Region in recent days, sending a strong message that cannabis remains an illegal substance and that the possession, growing and processing of cannabis will not be tolerated. Two suspects were arrested in Swakopmund's Kramersdorp suburb on Saturday, as they were dealing in 285 grams of cannabis valued at N$14 250. They were arrested in the suburb's Windhoeker Street. The suspects are Nathan Brian Damants (30) and Charles Edward Cook (52). Both made first appearances in the Swakopmund magistrate's court on Monday and were released on bail of N$3 000 each. They are scheduled for a next court appearance on 23 March this year. On Tuesday, the Namibian Police arrested two Usakos residents for the possession of cannabis. In both cases the alleged perpetrators were found in possession of cannabis plants and dried leaves. Christo Lorenzo Steenkamp (32) was arrested by drug law enforcement officers at his home in Leutwein Street at Usakos. During a search of his premises five cannabis plants and dried cannabis leaves
were discovered, valued at N$6 250. Steenkamp made a first appearance in the Usakos magistrate's court on Wednesday and was released on bail of N$4 000 Steenkamp returns to court on 3 March. On the same day, officers arrested EsmĂŠ Scheffers (48) at her home in the Erongosig suburb. She found in possession of 345g of cannabis and one cannabis plant. It is valued at N$3 400. Scheffers made a first appearance in the town's magistrate's court on Wednesday and was released on bail of N$3 000. Scheffers' next court appearance is also scheduled for 3 March. On Wednesday, police officers arrested two suspects in Kuisebmond at Walvis Bay for the possession of 41 bankies of cannabis, valued at N$2 250. The two persons is scheduled to make a first appearance in the Walvis Bay magistrate's court today.

Ndeshihafela Paulus gave birth in recent days, but she was never seen with the child. Community members, including her boyfriend, became suspicious and notified the Police. A medical doctor also confirmed the pregnancy. Paulus could also not give a satisfactory explanation and she was subsequently arrested. She made a first appearance in the Karibib magistrate's court on Monday. She was refused bail and will remain in custody until her next court appearance on 3 March this year.
Man dies running from Police A man died at Henties Bay on Monday, presumably from an injury he sustained as he was fleeing from the Namibian Police. Gerson Gawaseb (31) assaulted his ex-girlfriend and her sister on Monday, prompting the victims to call the Police. Upon the arrival of police officers, at the house where the assaults took place, Gawaseb fled the scene on foot. Police officers could not apprehend Gawaseb. On Tuesday, Gawaseb's body was discovered near a house which is under construction. It was clear Gawaseb bled profusely from a gushing wound and that his death came as a result of heavy blood loss. Officers combed the area and found a metal object close by. It was clear that Gawaseb struck the metal object as he was running, causing the fatal injury.

Cricket Namibia Partners with FlyWestair
Coastal U19 players off to National Trials Thirteen under 19 coastal Cricket players are in Windhoek to participate in phase 1 of the U19 National Trials hosted by Cricket Namibia (CN) today (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday) in Windhoek. From left is Daneel van der Walt (CN Board member), Bernard Scholtz (National player), Tangeni Lungameni (National player), Henri van Schalkwyk (Westair CEO), Polly Negongo (CN Vice President), Gerhard Erasmus (Captain of National team), Stephen Baard (National player), Ben Shikongo (National player) and Johan Muller (CN CEO) at the Eros Airport. Cricket Namibia and FlyWestair announce partnership agreement on Wednesday, 27th January 2021 at Eros Airport. The partnership is a two-year barter agreement where FlyWestair will be the preferred airline partner for all Cricket Namibia's local and international flights. In return FlyWestair compensates Cricket Namibia with free tickets between Windhoek and Johannesburg in support of our National program. Cricket Namibia CEO Johan Muller, “we are extremely fortunate to partner with FlyWestair. Their 'ontime' track record and flexibility allows us to adapt to constantly changing International schedules. We are proud to support a local entity that will in the end contribute to Namibia's economic development. Cricket Namibia Vice-President Polly Negongo further added that Cricket Namibia is privileged to partner with the leading airline in Namibia, and hopes the partnership extends. “The partnership makes our plans easier locally and internationally, thank you FlyWestair.” Henri van Schalkwyk, Westair CEO, says that it is an
honour to partner with Cricket Namibia, arguably currently the best performing Namibian National sports team, especially with the strides the national team has made in the past two years on the global stage. The pandemic has been blight on both travel and international sports. FlyWestair hopes to make the team's travels easy, safe and enjoyable under the current limitations. FlyWestair CEO further says, “As a proudly Namibian airline we are here to support our country and its people by continuing to deliver exceptional on-time service. Last year we were able to conduct many repatriation flights while continuing as far as possible within the travel restrictions to offer our scheduled services.” Currently FlyWestair operates scheduled routes between Windhoek and four destinations, including Cape Town, Johannesburg, Ondangwa and Walvis Bay. “We will continue to strive towards getting our passengers, and now also our national cricket stars, to their destinations safely and on time,” says van Schalkwyk.
Cricket Namibia CEO, Johan Muller said the vision of CN is to implement a structure that allows equal opportunity, which is fair to all players and transparent to all stakeholders. Muller said, “Considering the amount and quality of exposure of our school players, our trial structure aims to create more opportunities to participate while not neglecting any player irrespective of geography.” Muller said, “With that in mind, our main purpose of the upcoming trials is to select the best players for the Namibia U19 team which is going to take part in World Cup qualifiers to be held in Nigeria in September 2021.” “Five African countries will compete, with the top team will secure a spot in the ICC 14th edition U19 World Cup to be held in West Indies in early 2022” Muller said. Muller explained that the identification for the initial squad of forty-eight (48) players was done through consultation with selectors and the evaluation of player's performances during school leagues, National tours in December 2019 and their performance during the National Week in December 2020. Muller said “The group of forty-eight (48) players will participate on the above weekend where the squad will be reduced to twenty-eight (28). These players will then attend two training weekends and participate in various inter-squad games before the squad will be reduced.” The coastal under 19 players (with school's name in brackets) are: Renier Bosman, Marco Malan and Andre van Niekerk (Pro Ed Academy), Addo Ita (West Side High), GP Greeff, William Lottering and Scott Winborn (Walvis Bay Private High School), Vincent Murapa (Tutaleni High), Tangi Nuuyoma, Jeremia Shilongo, Simon Shilongo, Romano Paulus and Olange Nanjedi (Duinesig Secondary School).
