Costa Concordia salvage Swimmer in trouble inside master visits Walvis Bay at Mole - warning over Tiger
rough winter seas Erwin Leuschner
A resident of Swakopmund landed in trouble on Tuesday evening when he and a friend decided to go for a late after-noon swim at the Swakopmund Mole. While the friend managed to swim safely to shore, the other person only just managed to swim to the wooden platform in the centre where he was “stranded.”

“Luckily people at the Strand Hotel noticed that something was abnormal,” Adri Goosen, Swakopmund's Fire Chief, explained to namib times. He was notified about the situation when the sun had just set and it was dusk. The Sea Rescue Institute of Namibia's (SRIN) station 1 was notified. By the time the rescue operation began, it was already dark. Armed with torches SRIN-members made their way to the platform, where they rescued the stranded swimmer and brought him safely to the beach. “He looked fine, but he was under severe shock when he was safe,” Goosen continued. The man did not speak and was taken to hospital for further observation by Eagle Christian Ambulance Service. Goosen calls on the public to be extremely cautious when swimming in the ocean, even when it is in perceivable safe waters like the Mole-basin. “People should refrain from swimming when it is getting dark or when the swell is very strong like it was,” he warned. Due to a strong storm around the Cape of Good Hope and the fact that it was full moon a few days ago, the swell of the Atlantic Ocean along Namibia's entire West Coast was extremely high over the weekend and again on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Waves reached a height of up to four metres in some instances.

Floris Steenkamp Workers of several companies at the coast lodged inquiries to namib times this week with a question whether this coming Monday (2 May) is a public holiday. Namibia with the rest of the world commemorate Workers Day on Sunday 1 May. The question to this answer is yes. Monday 2 May is a public holiday, as the Act on Public Holidays (Act 26 of 1990) stipulates under Section 1 (2) of the Act that should a public holiday fall on a Sunday, the next Monday will also be a public holiday. A schedule to the Act determines Namibia has a total of twelve public holidays per annum, three of which will fall in short sequence next week: starting with Sunday/Monday (Workers Day), followed by Cassinga Day on Wednesday 4 May and Ascension Day on 5 May. Employers are urged to consult the Labour Act 2007 to determine the rights and duties of both the Employer and Employee over public holidays. This include remuneration for work conducted on public holidays and specifically in the case of Sunday and Workers Day that coincides.

Costa Concordia Continued from page 1 was gathered they encountered instances where they had to rethink strategy. By May 2012 Titan's salvage plan to lift the 114 500 Costa Concordia was ready. By September work began to what is today known as not only the biggest salvage operation of a passenger ship but in the words of Sloane “more than triple in size of any other ship salvage operation up to the Costa Concordia disaster”. The essence of the salvage plan was to ensure Costa Concordia's front section remains attached to the mid-ship section during lifting. A device more or less like a giant neckbrace was constructed and attached to the ship for reinforcement. This neck brace was 6 500 cubic meters in size and was ready by August 2012. Further work was required to
stabilise the sternsection. With the ship reinforced, the preparation work was still far from done. Ninety meters of Costa Concordia's entire mid-ship section was hanging over a valley on the seabed and it had to be filled up, in order to have the ship resting on even ground for the salvage. The answer to filling an underwater valley lies in bags of cement. It required 30 000 bags of cement (23 500 cubic meters) that had to be poured under the ship to form a stable environment. With all the preparation work to the ship's hull and the ground on which it rests secure, the next giant step was to construct and attach a total of 66 000 square meters of external buoyancy tanks to the ship on both its port and starboard sides. By 16 September 2013
Sloane (right) with Paul van der Merwe the work at last started to lift the massive ship upright. By 17 September the ship was upright and resting in her cradle. It required more than 22 000 individual dives, more than 30 000 diving hours, more than 530 people on the salvage team that worked round the clock
to a total of 4,8 million man hours to have the ship rested upright and ready to be removed to a ship breaking yard. Sloane and his team pulled off an amazing feat. For his achievement he has received various international honours, including Italian Knighthood, the
German Ocean Award and an award from the Cape Chamber of Commerce. Sloan will recall this massive project again in New York soon where he was invited to speak over the salvage operation at an international gathering of the International Maritime
Justice Ministry hampers ACC-progress Sharlien Tjambari During a media debriefing held by the Anti-Corruption Commission's (ACC) Swakopmund Office and the office of the Governor yesterday, at the office of the Governor, the Erongo Governor, Mr Cleophas Mutjavikua, said corruption is one of many issues Namibians are faced with on a daily basis. According to the Head and Crime Investigation Officer of ACC in E r o n g o M r Wa l t e r Kurtz, the ACC received five cases in 2012, only four cases in 2013, eight cases were re-ported in 2014, three in 2015 and 2016 have started off with seven cases since January. “Of all cases that were reported since the beginning of this year, nine of those cases are still with the Director General of the ACC in order to make a decision whether to investigate or to refer the matter to another
institution or to decide to decline the investigation,” Kurtz said. At the moment the ACC have 24 ongoing investigations and 20 cases are in court. “Those cases are cases we investigated in town c o u n c i l s , N AT I S , Ministry of Mines, town councils of Omaruru, Henties Bay, Karibib and Usakos,” added Kurtz. Of all cases reported in 2012, four cases were declined or closed and one case was pending and referred to another institution which requested to do
their own investigation. After that the results of the investigation will be sent back to the ACC in order to decide whether it will continue with further investigation, Kurtz stated. He said a good thing is that the cases that are being reported at the ACC are increasing rapidly and people are aware of which cases are part of corrupt practices and which are not. Kurtz is however not happy with the Ministry of Justice who con-stantly postpones court cases “and most of these cases
ACC’s Walter Kurz are since 2012 but not finalised yet. They are postponing them because either the prosecutor is not prepared or the magi-strate is not willing to refuse to postpone this matter because the accused person came to court and said he had to engage another lawyer he wants to represent him. This hampers our progress in that regard.”

Winter swell - Tiger Reef flooded Erwin Leuschner
The extremely rough and high swell along Namibia's entire coast has this week also hit the popular hang-out spot, Tiger Reef Beach Bar, located to the south of Swakopmund. Except for flooding a part of the establishment no damages have been reported. Winter weather in the southern hemisphere is generally associated with high and rough seas. “Some water came into the bar over the weekend, but it was not as bad as on Tuesay night,” Quinton Liebenberg, owner of the establishment, said to namib times. He continued saying that the waves are more an inconvenience than that they cause damage. The Tiger Reef Beach Bar has in the past suffered continuously from strong swells, being located right on the beach. When the Swakop River reached the Atlantic Ocean during the rainy season of 2010/2011 the beach in front of the bar was replenished and the bar was “safe” for quite a while. Ever since then the current has been carrying the deposited sand northwards, leaving the establishment exposed to Mother Nature once again. “About 15 or 20 meters of the property is already in the ocean. I have been paying rent for a part of the ocean for a while already,” Liebenberg continued. According to him the bar itself is safe, after he anchored the struc-
ture with five meter deep poles a few years ago. He therefore is not worried that the bar will be destroyed. Liebenberg continued saying that the strong swell this week caused sand to build up in front of the bar, which is an inconvenience. When high waves wash over the sand, the water is “trapped” inside causing the establishment to flood. Once the strong swell had settled the staff had spent a great amount of time cleaning the bar and sweeping all the sand back onto the beach again. “This time was not as bad as two years a g o , ” L i e b e n b e rg says. He assured that the Tiger Reef Beach Bar will “not go away”. He currently has sent a proposal to the Municipality and plans a small accommodation development in the property. “Initially we planned a different development, but because of the strong cur-rent here, it would cost a lot of money to make the beach area
safe. It would have been unaffordable,” he said.

The Wreck reopens Erwin Leuschner
Just over a year ago one of the most renowned Swakopmund Restaurants, “The Wreck” at the Beach Lodge close to Mile 4, closed its doors after a judgement in the Supreme Court prohibited it serving the general public. “We have reached an agreement and will open again on 1 July,” the owner André van Rensburg confirmed to namib times this week.
The Beach Lodge was constructed to look like a ship. After the restaurant, The Wreck located in the top floor, was closed just over a year ago, it will re-open again on 1 July, much to the excitement of many residents
Janie Brits winner of IPad Janie Brits is the new owner of a brand new Ipad that she won in a competition that was launched by the Walvis Bay Pharmacy. They collected 766 completed forms from their clients and used software on the internet to select the lucky number, 413. Pharmacist Arliné du Plessis said they launched the competition last year already. “We have a new software program that was installed by We care, South Africa, and this company helped with their IT software and also sponsored the Ipad. We entered all our clients information on this software. This enables us to help our clients remember repeats on their medicine, for birthday wishes and also to always stay in contact with our clients through messaging. With this card that you get, you can also build up points, the same as the system that Clicks use,” said Arliné. The lucky winner Janie said, “ I have entered a lot of competition and most of the time I am lucky with a price. This is going to be a family Ipad, but I have told my kids, it still stays Mommy's one.”
Janie Brits (left) and Arlinè du Plessis
The news of the reopening of the restaurant was met with a tremendous amount of praise over the past few days. After all, “The Wreck” was seen as one of the best food establishments in Swakopmund, not only because of the cuisine, but more so because of the stunning view the restaurant offers onto the Atlantic Ocean, especially during a sundowner. To prepare for the new opening van Rensburg is currently hiring new staff. Thereafter extensive training will commence. He plans a few soft openings before finally opening for the general public again on the mentioned date. “It is astounding, as we already received bookings,” he said. The dispute regarding the Beach Lodge and the restaurant was going on for more than ten years, when the judgement in the Supreme Court was finally delivered in March 2015. In this case the dispute was between the owner of the adjacent huge erf located to the
south of the lodge, Cornelia Lewies, and the beach lodge. In the appeal document lodged in the Supreme Court it stated that Lewies planned to develop the erf with „The Village Hotel“ and intended to invest about N$58 million. The initial saga took its course when the Swakopmund Town Council decided in 2008 that the height restriction for the Beach Lodge should be reduced from eight to ten meters. The restaurant is located in the top floor. In the application it was argued that the additional height obstructed the northern view of the planned boutique hotel as well as some of the residences. The applicant therefore went to the High Court and attempted to have the decision by council cancelled. Furthermore the applicant requested the court to prohibit the operation of a lodge, restaurant, guesthouse or hotel, which has more than ten rooms, on the erf of the Beach Lodge.
After the application failed in the High Court, an appeal was lodged in the Supreme Court of Namibia. This initial application also failed in the Supreme Court. In their judgement the three judges Shivute, Chomba und Mtambanengwe came to the conclusion that the Beach Lodge can still operate as before. A suprising decision was taken regarding the restaurant though. The judges ruled that the restaurant may still be operated, but that it can only serve guests residing in the lodge and cannot serve the the general public anymore. After the judgement was delivered the Restaurant was closed shortly afterwards with subsequent retrenchments following. Van Rensburg did not give details about the agreement that was reached, but said that the restaurant will definately open again soon.

DRC resident disappointed in state ambulance service
A resident of the DRC Informal Settlement says he is very disappointed in the State Hospital's ambulance service. On Sunday morning around 03:30 the resident called the ambulance service and a male nurse answered the phone call. According to him, “this nurse was very rude.” According to the complainant his friend came running to his house with a one-year-old baby. “The baby was critically ill and my friend asked me to call the ambulance for him, but the nurse who answered the call was very rude and told me that the ambulance does not pick up people from home and that we should take the baby to the hospital ourselves.” The complainant had no choice but to call the Swakopmund Fire Brigade and the Fire Chief Mr Adri Goosen responded positively and took the baby to the hospital. “Mr Goosen was so good to us and responded without hesitation, we are so grateful for him and the way he cared for that baby but very disappointed in the service delivery of the State Hospital,” said the complainant. “What would the State Hospital have done if the baby had died in our arms?” asked the complainant. Goosen also confirmed that he was called to assist at around 03:30. Mam'selle Luiperth In the colonial times, own governance. Municipality to provide 1 000 erven for housing Liesl Losper Recently Walvis Bay has been in the spotlight regarding the issue of housing. At a council meeting held in Kuisebmond on Tuesday, the deputy mayor, Hilka Erastus said the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Sophia Shaningwa, requested the municipality to provide about one thousand serviced erven in order to alleviate the demand for land and housing needs. “What I can say is that the Municipal Council of Walvis Bay remains committed to this process and is in consultation with the Ministry to finalise the modalities of the land delivery process. Apart from the Government, Municipality, and various beneficiaries, there are other stakeholders whose role and input will be crucial during the process. They include the NHE, financiers, building contractors and employers of beneficiaries,” Erastus said. She emphasised that the national, regional and local authorities are hard at work and remain sensitive to the cry for affordable land and shelter from especially the poor and the ultra-poor. While the housing and land issues continue to be a challenge, “we should not allow it to detract us from other core responsibilities such as growing the local and national economy.” She also commented that Walvis Bay is doing everything in its power to sustain the demands of a growing economy by investing in the necessary infrastructure. “We dare not relax our efforts in this regard because we know it will attract investors, who in turn will create jobs. The more jobs there are, the more money will be in circulation to afford goods and services, and assets such as houses.”

The man with a hand for drawing Sharlien Tjambari
Patrick Haraeb is a sketch artist who resides in the DRC informal settlement. Haraeb has been drawing since he was a young boy and describes drawing as one of his greatest talent. Haraeb says that his eyes and hand co-ordination is so good and sharp that he can sketch someone or something exactly as he sees it. “If someone brings me a passport photo and ask me to sketch it into a bigger drawing, I can do that without having second thoughts,” said Haraeb. In the past he used to draw for fun but now he says he has given all his attention to drawing because he believe it is his only hope towards making a living and putting bread on the table for his family. Haraeb uses unused maize meal bags to draw on and also makes different kind of sculptures using his bare hands. “I never studied for this and I do not have any academic qualifications, it is just my passion that drove me to where I am and what I do today” he adds. Haraeb is in need of assistance and says he uses the maize meal bags because he cannot afford to buy drawing boards and quality drawing paper, he says that he needs hardboards or drawing paper. “If anyone has drawing paper or hardboards that they are not using please give it to me,” said Haraeb. He said he has not been able to sell any of his paintings because most of them are not painted yet and says the paint he uses on the drawings is very expensive, anyone is welcome to donate paint, hardboards or drawing paper. Haraeb has potential and he is an excellent sketch artist. For anyone willing to assist him with drawing material please contact him at 081 336 1330.

Curves to open at 05:30 from 1 May Curves Swakopmund, situated at the Woermann Brock Shopping Centre in Vineta is owned and managed by Ruth Venter, a highly experienced health & fitness professional from the UK. From 1 May this popular fitness club, offering “Fast, Fun, Fitness for Women” will be opening its doors for the first time at 05:30 in the morning. “Many women on the go all day find it hard to make time for themselves to improve their health and fitness,” said Ruth. “We become wives, mothers, employees or business owners and looking after our own health gets pushed to the bottom of our list of priorities. But to keep up with our fast paced lives and manage the stress that often builds up from it, we need to look after ourselves.” “After receiving requests recently to open Curves earlier in the morning, from busy women wanting to exercise at Curves, it was an easy decision to make” added Ruth. “Women can have a full body, high intensity work out for 30 minutes, be finished by 6:00 and still have time to get children to school and get to work.” “Thanks, I really appreciate all your assistance and help. You are great. It is nearly 5 months now and I enjoy the workouts tremendously,” Brigitte Buchner Lassen. on the joining fee from 1 to 31 May 2016 (valid for all fixed term membership types). “Curves offers a uniquely supported training experience for women” explains Ruth Venter, owner and manager of Curves “we provide an instructor led group exercise style of exercise incorporating strength training, through safe and effective hydraulic resistance, aerobic exercises and functional training all combined in a 30 minute circuit.” “Every member works at their own pace and to their own ability on the circuit so it is safe and effective for all ages, abilities and especially good for ladies starting to exercise for the first time.” “We simply love the classes, the atmosphere, the encouragement and our world class instructor, Ruth. There are a good deal of committed women here, we love everything and are truly thankful to be part of Curves!” Elizabeth De Beer Pilates available at Curves Swakopmund Pilates is a form of exercise, developed by Joseph Pilates, which emphasiSes the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility, and awareness in order to support efficient and graceful movement. The main benefits of doing Pilates exercise that people report are that they become stronger, longer, leaner, and more able to do anything with grace and ease. Core strength is the foundation of Pilates exercise. It effectively works the core muscles which are the deep, internal muscles of the abdomen and back. When the core muscles are strong and doing their job, they work together with the more superficial muscles of the trunk to support the spine and movement. As you develop your core
strength you develop stability throughout your entire torso which can help overcome back pain. As the trunk is properly stabilised, pressure on the back is relieved and the body is able to move freely and efficiently. “By attending Pilates classes at Curves on a regular basis, (twice a week), I have realised just how important it is to be aware of my posture and to make sure it is correct at all times. I have noticed that I'm much more supple than I use to be and at the age of 60 years I am able sit cross legged without discomfort, something I was never really able to do before, except as a child. As well as the physical benefits, Pilates is enjoyable. I can recommend it without hesitation for anybody!” Amanda Fleidl For more information on Pilates or to have a free trial class, contact Ruth on 064-46 2001. Curves Members benefit from the Sauna at Live It

The body's response to gentle, persistent heat, such as in a sauna, is well-documented and proven day in and out by people all over the world. Physically, few things in life are more reinvigorating than a deep, healthy sweat every day. Tension fades, muscles unwind, mentally; we emerge relaxed, revived and ready for whatever the day may bring. Saunas relieve stress, relax muscles thereby soothing aches and pains in both muscles and joints. Sweating induced by a sauna flushes out toxins which cleanses the skin, fights illness and improves cardiovascular efficiency. Saunas can also induce a deeper sleep and just make you feel good. A few minutes a day in a sauna is all it takes to look and feel better. Which is why Curves owner Ruth Venter got together with Live It Health & Fitness Club owner Charmaine Smit to offer Curves members use of the sauna facility at Live It at a seriously reduced rate?

The Jungle Book is now featuring at the Atlanta Cinema in Swakopmund Come the next Oscars submission season, Disney will be flush with top animation options for consideration. There will be “Zootopia,” and the forthcoming sequel “Finding Dory.” And then there will be “The Jungle Book” The smash hit from Jon Favreau is being characterised as Disney's latest “liveaction remake” of one of its animated classics — a wave of releases that includes “Maleficent” and “Cinderella.” But the new “Jungle Book” has a distinction: Despite the live-action moniker, it's mostly animated. Sure, the film has a human actor (Neel Sethi) front and center in the role of Mowgli; Favreau has said viewers need that
human connection to relate to his film's emotional palette. But it's the visual palette here that renders this film so fascinating. As Favreau has said in interviews, for every dozen feet or so that Mowgli walks, the animators must create a dozen feet of jungle out of digital thin air. In other words: The technology at work isn't simply motioncapture (or performance capture), by which live-motion recording of performers is used to model
the animation upon. Instead, this film is true “key-frame” animation, in which certain “key” frames are rendered to determine beginning and end points in each transition. Put more simply, “The Jungle Book” feels like perhaps the most animated “live-action” feature film ever This isn't just about blurring the line between live-action and animation, which Hollywood has deftly been doing for years. This is the effect of
obliterating that line as a false division. Even film nomenclature hasn't caught up with the collision of technology. “The Jungle Book,” as one digital hybrid of a cinematic cub, is literally an achievement beyond words. (“Manimation”? “Live Mo-Cap-Key”?) This milestone may not matter so much to the viewer, but it could matter soon to filmawards judges. Because what's to keep “Jungle Book” from becoming a King Louis-sized heavyweight in animation races, short of a backlash that results in cobbled together eligi-
bility tweaks? Although most viewers may not harbor such prejudices between styles, the Academy certainly does. Just recently, Disney/Pixar's animated “Inside Out” — clearly one of the best films of 2015 — did not receive a best picture Oscar nomination. Yet a film like 2013's “Gravity,” which relied heavily on digital effects, got a best picture nod. As the line grows ever blurrier for those charged with drawing such categorical demarcations, one thing is clear: “The Jungle Book” looks to meet all the Academy's eligibility requirements for competing as an animated feature. It's unclear whether Disney wants to test those waters. But when “Jungle Book” animators can digitally paint water that looks more realistic than actual water, nothing seems beyond the bounds of the studio's imagination. · This article was published in the Colombian.

Persistent drought continues to threaten wild horses MEDIA RELEASE Namibia Wild Horses Foundation would like to express their gratitude for all the generous contributions for the wild horses during the past six months.
Supplementary feeding for the wild horses. Most of them are currently in a moderate to poor condition
This has provided supplementary feed – a quarter to a third of the horses' nutritional requirements – in the form of grass/lucerne and a protein lick, and will sustain the population until the beginning of June when the next phase will need to be implemented to ensure their survival. The Foundation is appealing for funds or good quality grass for this more severe period and urges the public to continue with their support for the wild horses to see them through the winter. As the drought experienced in Namibia has severely affected the central and southern parts of the country, there is little grass left in the horses' range.
Fences in the south and east restrict them from moving further inland to areas that received scattered rainfall. The Foundation and friends of the wild horses' hopes for late summer rain have unfortunately not been realised, leaving the desert barren at the beginning of winter. It will therefore become necessary to increase the feed to provide half to three quarters of their nutritional requirements. As much of Namibia is dry, grass and lucerne will most likely have to be bought from South Africa, which is a costly affair. The wild horses have lived in the Namib Desert for over a century. Originating
from the well-bred stock from the Kubub stud farm and the horses abandoned at the Garub base by the Union soldiers in 1915, the population has wavered between 50 to 300 horses over the hundred years of their existence. The desert extremes have honed their genes, creating a hardy resilient breed that has adapted its behaviour to survive in its desert environment. The horses live harmoniously in fluid and fluctuating family groups, building bonds with other members that last a lifetime. Over the years they have become one of the main attractions in southern Namibia and thousands of tourists visit the Garub waterhole near Aus annually to witness the horses galloping to the water across the Garub plains. They continue to be a source of inspiration for all and have come to represent the Namibian attributes with their wild, rugged beauty. A non-profit organisation, Namibia Wild Horses Foundation was established in 2012 to monitor the well-being of the horses and to marshal funding to provide feed for the horses should the need arise in the drier cycles common to the arid country. It works closely with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and comprises members from the tourism, veterinary and environmental-management and research sectors. The horses have been studied extensively over the last twenty years by Dr Telané Greyling, who adds her expertise to the foundation. According to Dr Greyling, it is necessary to maintain a population of at least 50 mares and 50 stallions to preserve the genetic integrity of the Namib horses. The population is presently around 160 horses, having lost more than 100 horses – mainly the young and old – since the beginning of the drought. Spotted Hyenas have played a part in the mortalities as the horses are easy prey in their weakened state. Not a single foal has survived in the last three years. The Foundation fears that without rain there will be virtually no grass left by the onset of winter and as the horses' condition further deteriorates numbers will begin to drop dramatically. All donations, large and small, are welcome and will be gladly received to see the horses to the next season which will hopefully bring with it the blessings of rain. Hildegard Scheps wurde 100 Jahre alt Hildegard Scheps wurde im 1. Weltkrieg am 22. April 1916 in Adelsdorf geboren.

A f r i k a re i s e 1 9 5 2 schrieb.

Road test: 2016 Ford Ranger
It's weird when the familiar becomes unfamiliar and then familiar again. And as I pilot the orangey Ford Ranger on Dubai's windswept and dusty back roads, there's something odd about the way it barrels along. Nothing wrong, just odd – it reminds me of something from years ago. When I stop at a junction then accelerate away from it, I think I've discovered why, so I pull over and stop the big Ford. I walk around to its rear and open the fuel-filler cap and there it is, written on a sticker nestling within: diesel. That would explain a lot. Big diesel engines are commonplace in Europe and other continents; not so much here unless we're talking artic lorries, construction equipment or the luxury yachts that pepper our coastline. I've been here five years, and this is the first diesel vehicle I've driven except for a Volvo earth-moving machine and, a lack of knowledge about where to fuel notwithstanding, I don't know why there aren't more cars in the UAE so equipped. The Ranger is first and foremost a commercial vehicle – a pickup truck that can seat five in a crew cab with a load space behind that's bigger than the floor space in most apartment living rooms. But Ford isn't content with simply marketing it to the tradespeople of this world because it reckons the Ranger is good enough to be taken seriously as a leisure or everyday mode of transport, too. And on the face of it I'd have to agree. Mine is the WildTrak version and, for a truck, it looks pretty good. It's not as brash or as vulgar as some of the big American and Japanese pickups with their lashings of chrome and Transformers aggression, but it's not as weedy as the ones that look like normal cars that have been chopped up and had their rears removed. It has gravitas and just the right amount of attitude, but try to squeeze into a normal-sized car-park space and you're reminded that this is still a physically enormous machine. The interior doesn't look or feel in any way commercial except for the overriding impression of indestructibility with the choice of materials for trimming the cabin. There's soft-touch imitation leather liberally applied to the top of the dashboard and the door cards, but the rest seem to be a bit hard to the touch and the seats are upholstered with a mix of cloth and leatherette – it's

all a million miles away from what you'd normally associate with a commercial truck. Anyone familiar with current Fords will recognise the eight-inch central touchscreen display that is used to operate the excellent SYNC interface with smartphone connectivity, and there are some tasty digital gauges flanking the speedo – it's all very modern and attractively designed. There's plenty in the way of safety features, too, with a full complement of air bags, blind-spot monitoring, electronic stability, traction control, hill-descent control and trailer-sway control (if you've ever seen a driver lose control with a trailer fishtailing behind, effectively wagging the car, you'll know how important that one is), although there are no Isofix anchor points in the rear seats, meaning junior's car seat can't be used. Which means the Ranger, in turn, can't be used as a family vehicle like most other moderns. Anyway, back to that diesel engine. It's a 3.2L, five-cylinder turbocharged unit hooked up to a

six-speed automatic box and, thanks to the extensive soundproofing of the cabin, you can barely hear it. But you can definitely feel the effect of the 470Nm of torque it generates and sends to all four wheels – once you're in the mid-rev range and accelerate, the Ranger simply surges on a tidal wave of twist that only a big diesel engine can muster. It's strong, responsive and without noticeable turbo lag, but it's best to not think of it as a performance vehicle, rather a highly capable and enjoyable method of versatile transport. While I don't venture onto the dunes during my time with the Ranger, I know others who have and they've been hugely impressed by the way it tackles the rough stuff, often doing so with greater ability than much more expensive and, you'd assume, more suitable cars for desert driving. It can

wade through wadis to a depth of 800mm, has 230mm of ground clearance and approach, and generous departure angles that mean you're not going to tear off the bumpers when dealing with steep inclines. There's also the ability to switch from two- to four-wheel drive and low-range gearing is on the menu, too, so the chances of getting hopelessly stuck are very slim. All in all, the Ranger WildTrak is an extremely impressive piece of kit and represents excellent value for money. I still wouldn't buy one because pickups aren't my thing but, if you are in the market for something like this you owe it to yourself to try it out before parting with your money. Winter Corporate League Bowls 2016 final evening During the final evening of the FNB Namibia Walvis Bay Winter Corporate League all the teams were battling it out for the winning three positions in the Plate and Shield section. The format they played was strength vs strength, which meant that any of the top teams could potentially still end up first. In the Plate Section, the first six teams still had the opportunity to end up first, while at the bottom Sentrum Pharmacy and the Municipality were playing it out for the wooden spoon. The results in this section were as follows: 1st Standard Bank, 2nd Nedbank, 3rd FNB, Wooden Spoon – Municipality 1. In the Shield Section the fight was on between Magic, Procon, Wesbank and the Flying Coffee Pot, but there were other teams, that with a good result could sneak into a winning position. At the bottom the battle was between
Namsov, Municipality 2 and Walfish Electric. The results were: 1st Magic, 2nd Flying Coffee Pot, 3rd Coastal Cellular, Wooden Spoon - Walfish Electric. The Coastal Cellular team comprised of four youngsters who, with their spirit and skill, out-bowled some of the other teams. Other prizes were awarded as well: Best Team Spirit – Municipality 1 & 2, Jockey Award – FNB, G-string Award - Cheetah's, Biggest Losers – Bachmus Oil. Once again Namib Park Bowling Club needs to thank FNB Namibia, Walvis Bay for their very generous sponsorship. Without institutions like FNB, a sport like bowls would struggle to exist. Thank you also to the 22 teams that entered. It was a pleasure seeing the bowling green filled with laughter, fighting spirit and lots of interesting bowls. We do hope that you all will continue to support the club and defend your titles in the summer league.
