Dramatic sea rescue Isaac Chikosi
A restaurant manager risked his own life on Friday to save the life of a man who jumped off the Swakopmund jetty, ironically in an attempted suicide. Gerhardus (Hardus) Saayman (28) is a manager at the Jetty Restaurant. He was alerted by a colleague that someone jumped off the jetty and was in serious trouble in the water. Pictures and videos that emerged show the brave Hardus Saayman jumping into the sea, swimming to the drowning man. Saayman, who is an experienced surfer, got the man into a position in the water that enabled him (Saayman) to swim the man closer to the jetty. The sea was fairly rough and onlookers can be overheard on the videos cheering him to keep him motivated to battle the current and the extremely cold water. In what can only be described as a gallant effort bystanders also took action to assist Saayman and the man who he was rescuing. People assisted by throwing a fire hose into the water to serve as a makeshift lifeline. Continues on page 2

A family of six elephants were loaded aboard the freighter El Nino in the port of Walvis Bay on Thursday night and is destined for an upmarket game park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Another export shipment of live elephant are scheduled for June, Namport said in a statement on Friday. In the same statement Namport says this was the first of its kind export of live elephant and certainly not the last. A total of 205 heads of game were exported to the same game park in 2018, but sadly some of the animals died in the process of the transport to the DRC. See Namport press statement and more pictures on page two of today’s edition.

Rescue
Continued from page 1
In the aftermath of the dramatic rescue Saayman said in an interview with Namib Times his initial idea to have them pulled by the current towards the jetty didn't work. Waves crash against the jetty pillars with such force it could have crushed the two men in no time. “We had to paddle it out in the water waiting for a rescue team to arrive”. With the makeshift lifeline secured around the man's upper body, members of the Swakopmund Municipal fire and rescue services, Code Red Medical Services and sea rescue managed to pull both men ashore. The drowning man was treated for hypothermia before being transported to Swakopmund state hospital for observation in the event of a secondary drowning. As to the reason why the man jumped into the water, paramedic officials on the scene said they understood the man to be suffering from a mental illness. Saayman was humble over his gallant rescue of the man but the fact that he saved this man's life is a deed Namibians are deeply thankful for and immensely proud of.

Namport press statement on live export of elephant through port of Walvis Bay “Last night a family of six elephants comprising of two adults (bull and cow) and 4 calves were loaded at the Port of Walvis Bay on the El Nino vessel destined for a tourism Game Park in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This is the first time a consignment of such magnitude involving adult elephants is leaving the country and will not be the last as this was a trial run to guarantee that future exportations are conducted smoothly. Talking to Dr Ulf Tubbesing from Wildlife Vets Namibia, on the safety of the animals during the transhipment, he said that, “a team of experts is involved during the entire process of the transportation of animals and also accompanies the consignment up to time of discharge to ensure that the elephants are well looked after”. The entire operation, which lasted over 20 hours, required approximately 50 personnel members from various stakeholders being Namport, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Honesta Investment 32 cc, Blue Bush Investment trading as Wildlife Vets Namibia, KLD Ship Agency, Walvis Bay Stevedoring, Erindi Game Lodge, Mount Etjo Lodge, El Nino Crew members, Pronto Global Air and Ocean Freight and Camel Transport to ensure that the animals were safely loaded and transported to their destination.” Pictured below: leaving Namibian soil in special shipping containers. Swakopmunder now head chef at posh Stellenbosch restaurant Eileen van der Schyff A Namibian by heart, she might be young, but that is not keeping Nicole Loubser (25), from success and living her dream. From the heart of Swakopmund to the Heart of Quoin Rock Wine Estate on the slopes of the majestic Simonsberg Mountain, Namibian Chef, Nicole Loubser is the new fine dining head chef at Gåte at Quoin Rock. After Graduating from the Institute of Culinary Arts in early 2016, her culinary journey took her from apprenticeships at La Colombe and The Test Kitchen, to being accepted at Wellness-Residenz Schalber, a five-star superior hotel in Austria. She worked in Austria at Hangar 7 and comleted a pastry stint under guidance of Chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen of Michelin-starred JAN in Nice, France, in 2018. “Nicole has a calmness about her. She's a listener. She's very collected,” comes the high
praise from chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen. Her food philosophy is to surprise and delight, her style, experimental and playful. This powerful creative combination combined with fascination with molecular gastronomy leads diners to dazzling and beautiful food experiences. Molecular Gastronomy forms an integral part of the ICA curriculum and this training undoubtedly enabled her to pursue the position as Head Chef. Nicole compares her food to art. “In the kitchen, you have to let your
expressions flow. I like to see the plate as a canvas and the food as the paint brushes, paint and tools.” She said. When asked about her cheffing style, Nicole said that she does not believe in instilling fear in a work environment but rather having people respect one another and working hard together. You can have an environment where everyone works hard but respects one another. And you can give feedback and say “I don't like how you did that” without shouting. Treating someone humanely can still get the point
across. It's difficult, though, especially as a woman. For me, it's not about me being highlighted; it's about the team. We work together, we discuss everything and we come up with dishes
together. If I have an idea, I'll go ask pastry how they would execute it; then I'll talk to the cold section. Everyone can add something to a dish, so it's basically created by the whole team. My
goal is to encourage the team to express them-selves, to realise there are no limits and that they shouldn't be scar-ed to try. Nicole is working on a dish she wants to call “Starry Night.”

Containers took a plunge
Two containers fell of a cargo ship in the port of Walvis Bay on Saturday, prompting the services of Walvis Bay Diving and Salvage to retrieve it from the water. Both containers were empty and during a loading process onto the MSC Gabriella toppled and fell into the sea. The containers drifted to a position between the ship and the quay wall. Divers had to attach lifting equipment to the containers before a crane of Namport was used to pull it from the water.

The theme for this year's movement is “Tobacco and Lung Health”. We have a responsibility to use our voice and influence to support this movement and encourage fellow Namibians to rather quit smoking and live a healthier life. In Namibia an average of 3 600 new cancer cases are registered with the Namibia National Cancer Registry, while another almost one thousand cases are counted but not actively reported by healthcare providers and/or patients. From this number, 88 new lung cancer cases were recorded in 2016, while the majority of cancers in Namibia are in fact “life-style related” and the patient has been exposed to some form of tobacco use, during their lifetime as well. All cancer: 2014 – 3 376 2015 – 3 602 2016 – 3 633 Lung cancer: 2014 – 73 2015 – 85 2016 – 88 Rolf Hansen, Chief Executive Officer of CAN: “We are committed to reducing the physical, emotional and economic burden of cancer in Namibia. Cancer kills people in their most productive years and costs enormous amounts of money to treat. While effective diagnosis, treatment and support for cancer patients are critical, it's also essential to prevent
cancer where possible. Tobacco is a leading cause of preventable cancers and there are tools – particularly higher taxes that can be levied on tobacco products – that are proven to reduce tobacco use.” Why we need to act: Twenty percent of cancer deaths worldwide are related to tobacco. Smoking tobacco is the primary cause of lung cancer cases and responsible for more than two thirds of lung cancer deaths globally. Smokers aren't the only victims: second-hand smoke exposure at home or in the workplace also increases risk of lung cancer. In countries with high rates of smoking prevalence among men and low rates among women, a growing number of women develop lung cancer related to second-hand smoke exposure. Protecting non-smokers from second-hand smoke and stopping youth from starting to smoke reduces their tobacco-related cancer risk. A smoker who quits also reduces their risk: after 10 years, risk of lung cancer falls to about half that of a current smoker. And this is before we consider the vast range of other cancers and disease conditions like cardiovascular disease proven to be caused by tobacco. Every cancer organisation should join this global moment and support World No Tobacco Day, calling for high tobacco taxes to reduce tobacco use and tobacco-related cancer. Together the community can accelerate national and global efforts to reduce tobacco-related deaths.

Female Spinners Take on Swakopmund The Women Rock Spin Show is an annual event that has been hosted in Windhoek for the past two years. This year Swakopmund will host the motorsport at Swakopmund Spin City Arena on 1 June. The event will see an all-women cast take on the predominantly male sport. “We are determined to tour a different region each year to encourage women in motor sport and to help spark an interest in spinning across the country”, said Joel Nambahu the event Organiser. He further stated that in most motorsport related events, women's categories tend to be an afterthought and are usually overlooked. What makes this show unique is that it caters strictly to female spinners. According to the organisers Joel Nambahu and Wamboe Seun, this show is simply not about women in motor sport but a celebration of all women. Hence, in this regard, the food stalls at the event will be allocated to female vendors. The show will begin with a parade in the morning with Swakopmund's Mayor Paulina Ndahafa Nashilundo set to officially open the event. Three well-known spinners from South Africa will also participate although they will not officially compete. Novisto from Team Novisto, Ally Fortuin (19) and Robyn Fortuin (13) both from Team ARB are expected to wow the audience with their skills behind the wheel. In addition to this Elinor De Koe, a single mother of one, Ivanka (21) and Mrs Snyder a proud mother of six are some of the local spinners participating in the show. “We hope that the diversity in our spinning line up will show potential woman spinners and cynics that things such as gender, age and marital status are nonfactors in this industry. Car spinning is anyone's game. Absolutely anyone can learn how to spin and with enough dedication, they can become spin champions” The first 60 women at the gate enter for free. There are limited presale tickets – N$50 with adults paying the gate adults pay N$80 - at the gate children under the age of 12 years will pay half price N$40.

Vasbyt Action Rudi Bowe
Floris Steenkamp senior and Floris Steenkamp junior delivered thrilling competition and victory at the Weskus Vasbyt. Namib Desert 4X4 Vasbyt Club hosted the event under the banner of the Namibian Motorsport Federation near Dune 7 at Walvis Bay. The Steenkamp's with their vehicle called Bobjaan proved their skills during the ten extremely exhausting stages and managed to get the maximum points (600). They won the overall standings as well as the A-Class for the second time in a row. Herman and Nico Theron with their vehicle Poetsie were second with 580 points, followed by Theunsis van Zyl and Deon Louw with Pitstop with 570 points. A total of 19 vehicles participated in an A-Class for vehicles with a Short Wheel Base, B-Class for vehicles with a Long Wheel Base and C-Class for
vehicles with special modifications to the machines and had to find their way through ten demanding obstacles like sandpits, dune climbing a tire and a mud pit. Theunis van Zyl, chairman of the Namib Desert Vasbyt Club, thanked the spectators and running judges who visited the Vasbyt in the sun, wind and good weather.
The winners Floris senior and Floris Steenkamp junior with their vehicle called Bobjaan
Pieter Heunis medal stableford Herman and Nico Theron with their vehicle Poetsie Theunis van Zyl and Deon Louw with Pitstop
The medal stableford competition sponsored by Pieter Heunis at the Walvis Bay Golf Course was a huge success. A total of 24 players took part which was a reasonable size field after a wellsupported ESS fund raiser the previous day. Wynand Moller played an excellent round of golf and won with 41 points, proving that it is not a 'higher handicap' format only. Iimbondi stunner guides Namibia to victory Rudi Bowe Namibia got their 2019 Cosafa Cup campaign off to a perfect start with a 2-1 win over Mozambique in a Group B clash at King Zwe-lithini Stadium in Umlazi on Sunday afternoon. Following a rather uneventful first half that failed to conjure any real chances at either end of the pitch, the game finally sparked into life after the break. Dayo Antonio missed two gilt-edged chances for the Mambas in the opening moments of the half, while Charles Hambira was brilliantly thwarted by the Mozambique shot-stopper at the opposite end. The opening goal finally came in the 69th minute. Absalom Iimbondi dropped it on a dime for Joslin Kamatuka who made no mistake from close range to give Namibia the lead. Mozambique pulled level eight minutes later by means of a curling freekick from second-half substitute, Witiness Quembo, whose shot left the Namibian goalkeeper with no chance. Namibia, though, would not be denied all three points as provider turned scorer in the 82nd minute. Iimbondi pounced on the loose ball before firing an unstoppable shot from range into the back of the as the Brave Warriors conti-nued their stranglehold over their Southern African rivals. Victory moves the Namibia level on points with Malawi in Group B.
Absalom Iimbondi had an outstanding match against Mozambique today and earned the man of the match prize to go with his stunning winner
Both the men and women races were held on Sunday May 12 as a total of 81 athletes (38 women, 43 men), representing 19 countries, took the plunge in the warm waters of the West Indian Ocean with an idyllic background. The largest teams travelled from Australia, China and Hungary. Phillip had the privilege to compete against the world elite's (Olympians and World champs). The Men's 10km event started in the middle of the day when it was peak temperatures, with 30degree water. The hot weather and sea temperature was surely a factor for all the swimmers making this marathon race a tough challenge. The true courage was about never giving up. Unfortunately, some swimmers couldn't finish the race, experiencing hyperthermia and dehydration, due to the extreme conditions. The 10km racecourse was set up with 6 loops (each 1,6km). In the men's race one of the main contenders sitting right at the back of the pack, with Ferry Weertman with his distinctive slow stroke rate looking at ease as he bid his time in the early stages. In lap four Ferry turned onto his back to see who would take up the pace, while he settled into the pack for a break. Obviously, his mission was to shake up the pack and lose as many swimmers as possible. A lot of pressure was now on the pack as it stretched out into a long line with more and more swim-
mers falling off the pace. Going into the final lap with the wind picking up, only eleven swimmers were at the front with a lot of Australian Caps in contention (four would place in the top 10) and Olivier really increased the speed. Marc-Antoine Olivier of France led the pack on a fast and furious last lap to finish in first place in the men's 10km open water race. Olivier clocked a time of 1h56m02s00 and was closely followed by Nicholas Sloman. The Australian finished the second fastest in 1h56m04s10, while Hungary's Kristof Rasovszky closed the podium in 1h56m04s 30.Olympic title holder Ferry Weertman of the Netherlands came 4th in 1h56m04s80. Our Namibian Phillip Seidler showed an excellent performance keeping the pace with the world's elite for the first 5 laps, only falling off the pace on the last lap. Seidler made Namibia proud, claiming the 33rd place out of 43 men in a time of 1h58m, only being 02:56min behind the winner. Unfortunately, Open Water Swimming is a selffunded sport in Namibia. Due to insufficient funds, Phillip Seidler does not get enough opportunities to participate on an international level to gain valuable experiences with tactics. He was very privileged to compete at the FINA/CNSG Marathon Swim World Series in Seychelles, which was a great preparation for the upcoming 18th FINA World Championship 2019 in South Korea.
