Shoprite Namibia confirmed this week all branches countrywide removed from the shop shelves 400g canned pilchards with the codes ZST29 or ZSC29 after a possible canning deficiency was detected on some of these products. The brands affected were: Cape Point, Saldanha, West Point, Deep Catch, Shoprite Ritebrand, Checkers Housebrand, U-brand, Spar, Mamma’s, Sunny and OK Housebrand. All wholesalers, retailers and informal traders in SADC have been instructed to remove the mentioned canned pilchard brands from the shelves. Shoprite Namibia's head office confirmed yesterday to the Namib Times all canned pilchard products have been removed from the shelves. Other countries where the brands were also removed from the shelves are in Lesotho, Swaziland and Nigeria. The National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) confirmed the canned pilchards at the centre of a widespread recall was exported to countries outside of South Africa. These countries include Lesotho, Namibia, Swaziland and Nigeria. Consumers, who have purchased canned pilchards in tomato sauce and in chili sauce are urged to check the tin's code. If it starts with ZST29 or ZSC29, they must return it for a full refund. Manufacturer and food supplier, West Food Processors situated in Cape Town recalled the 400-gram tins of pilchards in tomato sauce over the weekend due to a “canning deficiency” that could result in food poisoning. The cans were scratched by the machine while it was being filled with sauce. The problem manifests itself after months of storage, which causes the content of the can to react with the metal of the can. The NRCS regulates the manufacture, production and treatment of canned fish and fishery products as part of the Compulsory Specifications (VC8014). All canned fish and fishery products that are manufactured in the Republic of South Africa are inspected and Continues on page 2

Namibians are thanked for their continued efforts to keep the dreaded Coronavirus from getting a foothold in the country. The Namibian Government is thanked for its pro-active approach which include the screening of people at all entry- and exit points, the Ministry of Health and Social Services, the Namibian Defence Force (Field Hospital) for efforts to be prepared. Namibian businesses are thanked for keeping their public areas clean and disinfected and Namibians are thanked individually for regularly washing hands during the day; to maintain personal hygiene specifically when sneezing or coughing and staying home when not feeling well with flue or cold-like symptoms.

Canned pilchards pulled from the shop shelves.... Continued from page 1 released by the NRCS for trade, according to regulatory protocols. West Food Processors, according to the National Consumer Commission (NCC), in South Africa, failed to inform the Commission about the recall as per regulations. “The manufacturer's failure to inform the NCC early could affect their ability to mitigate the risk to consumers”, said Prudence Moilwa Head of Enforcement and Investigations of the NCC.

Welwitschia Private Hospital inaugurates its state-of-the-art intensive care unit The Welwitschia Private Hospital raised the profile of Walvis Bay’s medical care sector further, with the inauguration this week of its state-of-the-art intensive care unit. The new facility has nine beds, three of which are in isolation rooms. The hospital now has a capacity of 97 beds with 3 specialised operating theaters. The Welwitschia Private Hospital is owned and operated by Erongo Medical Group. The Group’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Matthias Braune explained the hospital has consistently expanded its service offering over the past five years to keep up with the growing need of the urban community and that is laudable. “In 2015 we built and opened three new operating theaters, significantly reducing the number of patient referrals to the capital. We extended and refurbished our maternity ward in 2017. In the same year, the addition of our three-bed neonatal ICU became home to many new-borns and premature babies. We also responded to the increased health care needs of our community by opening a second 24-bed general ward in July 2019, which allowed our doctors to provide complete treatment for our valued surgical and medical patients.” Dr Kalumbi Shangula, Health and Social Services Minister extoled the Erongo Medical Group for the execution of this project. Further stating that “Your hard work has yielded a modern facility that will contribute to the provision of better healthcare for the people of Namibia. The last three years have delivered some excellent statistical outcomes, with mortality rates being three times lower when compared to data from the European Union. The ICU patients at the unit make up 70% of emergency admissions, with the remaining 30% being elective, post-surgical cases. This is a truly commendable achievement”. At the very event, the Minister also touched on the Coronavirus outbreak and said that the government has taken precautionary measures. “The Coronavirus has spread to as many as 33 countries outside China and the disease has caused many deaths. What is encouraging is that the number of new cases is reducing and more people are discharged from hospitals cleared of the disease. Nevertheless, Shangala stated that the Hepatitis E
outbreak in the Erongo region is more worrisome than the Coronavirus. Government has taken precautionary measures to prevent the introduction of the disease in Namibia. All travelers to Namibia are screened at all ports of entry and we have established dedicated isolation units and treatment centres. We have also built capacity to test for the Coronavirus in Namibia. Therefore, it is important for all Namibians to remain calm and follow the directives from the ministry.” As we take measures to protect ourselves against the Coronavirus, we must never lose sight of the elephant in the room: At the moment Hepatitis E poses a bigger threat to Namibia than the Coronavirus. For both Coronavirus and Hepatitis E, maintaining personal hygiene is a key factor. We must therefore continue to practice personal hygiene and avoid contamination.” The Erongo Medical Group and the ministry will soon formalise a public private partnership agreement for the benefit of both state and private patients. The newly inaugurated ICU will be managed by Dr Andreij Kornilov and Dr Igor Petrov who both have a combined 50 years' experience in intensive care.
At the opening: Mr Koot Potgieter (Quantity Surveyor), Mr Konrad Scheffer (Architect), Minister Shangula and Mr Matthias Braune

Kuiseb River flows
Eileen van der Schyff
Good rains in the catchment area of the Kuiseb River caused the river to flow this week. The station yesterday morning confirmed the river passed Gobabeb. The flow subsided considerably and the flow is expected to reach Klipneus soon. Hopes are high should good rains persist the river might again aim to reach the Walvis Bay lagoon south of Walvis Bay. The River's last major flow was in 2018. Gobabeb desert research station first reported the Kuiseb's flow on Monday. The Kuiseb River has its origin west of Windhoek in the Khomas Hochland. When the central highland receives good rains, the River would flow periodically for several days at a time and on average a total of three weeks per rainy season.

Future Females
Sharlien Tjambari
Close to 200 ladies gathered in Swakopmund on Thursday, 20 February for an evening of networking, aimed at business and personal development. The networking event formed part of the launch of Future Females Swakopmund and was themed “Money and Networking”. Future Females is a platform that connects, inspires and supports existing and aspiring female entrepreneurs. According to the Chapter Ambassador of Coastal Future Females Namibia Beatrice Schultz Future Females is a Global initiative and their aim in Namibia is to grow female entrepreneurs throughout Namibia in a healthy and supportive way where female entrepreneurs can feel safe and taken care of. Every month, Future Females hosts an event (Globally) focusing on a specific theme in business and personal development. While addressing the ladies on Thursday evening Njeri Mwangi, an Experienced Forensics and an antimoney laundering specialist said: “Our biggest challenge when it comes to money is our ego, we want more money but we are not able to handle the little that we have. We need to change the way we think when it comes to managing funds”. Mwangi further said the only way to manage funds wisely is by sticking to the budget, “get a budget and stick to it. Budget, save for things that matters most to you and lastly, invest”. Schultz said: “We believe that to drive change through entrepreneurship, technology and innovation, we cannot have just 50% of the world focused on it. More focus is needed to encourage and accelerate the success of aspiring and existing female entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs”. She further said, providing an environment, both physically and emotionally, where women can connect with others and access key resources (mentorship, funding, education) is key to accelerating the rate of female entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship globally.

Intertarsalgelenken liegen mag? Das fragt sich Ihre Susann Kinghorn
