The Namibian Police in the Erongo region urged residents this week against a surge in burglaries both at residences and businesses. The good news, according to Erongo Police community affairs officer, Sergeant Ileni Shapumba, is that several arrests were made over the weekend due to vigilant residents who saw crimes in the process of being committed who then phoned the police who reacted promptly. Sergeant Shapumba praised the vigilant behaviour of residents and added this is a powerful way of community policing. “The public is our ears and our eyes. We are the protector,” explained Shapumba. Although the patrolling of neighbourhoods are the main activities of community policing,
Shapumba explained, residents can be vigilant at home by observing their neighbourhood surroundings and report suspicious movements and behaviour to the police, neighbours or victims. According to Sergeant Shapumba the members of the community whose information led to the arrests over the
weekend were willing to co-operate with the police by providing statements and willingness to testify in a criminal court against the suspects. “Criminals know people are reluctant to get involved and to go through the processes of providing statements or appear as witContinues on page 2

Burglaries Continued from page 1 nesses in a criminal court. In this way the criminals control us, but if we co-operate the tides are turned,” it was explained. The public is also cautioned against activities that promote criminality. The most prominent examples are people buying stolen goods and people who don't take care to adequately secure their homes and businesses against burglars and armed robbers. “If we buy stolen items we keep the market alive for stolen goods and equally we fuel crimes like burglaries, armed robbery and theft. Even those who buy stolen goods can be victims too, as the thieves break into their houses and into their businesses too, to steal valuable items that they sell,” explained Shapumba. He mentioned the Namibian Police are aware of individuals in the Walvis Bay community who often turn to thieves and robbers, to steal items for them they need or want. “Traditionally burglaries, robberies and theft escalate towards year end as criminals too need money, the same as people who earn their money in an honest way. It is this time of the year that people need to take extra care and be more vigilant in spotting suspicious movement and activities.

SSS denies allega- Access to new shopping mall a concern tions of “clapping” learner Erwin Leuschner
The access road leading to the new shopping mall “Platz am Meer” has been a topic of concern since the mall officially opened its doors to the public last week Thursday.
A parent of a grade 9 learner at the Swakopmund Secondary School (SSS) has made serious allegations against the school principal, Mr Sinvula Sibanga, saying that he assaulted her child last Week in his office. Sibanga denies everything. The mother of the learner, whose identity cannot be revealed, said during a telephonic conversation with namib times that Mr. Sibanga “clapped” her child once in the face and chased the boy from the school. “On that day it was very cold and my child wore a black jacket with white stripes on the shoulder because his jersey was torn,” said the angry mother. According to her the class teacher of her son asked him to remove the jacket, as it does not form part of the school uniform. The boy allegedly refused and was taken to the P r i n c i p a l ' s o ff i c e where he again refused to remove the jacket, where after Mr Sibanga allegedly hit him. She also said Mr Sibanga chased the child away and told him he did not belong in the school anymore. When confronted with the allegations by namib times, Mr Sibanga denied that any such incident ever transpired. Sibanga calmly said that the allegations are not true and that the parent was the one responsible for the chaos caused at the school that day. “Yes there was an incident at my school. The class teacher came to my office with the learner, claiming he does not want to follow the instructions as he was wearing a
jacket which is not part of the school uniform. He was told to remove it in class and he refused to do so. While in my office, I asked him politely to remove the jacket and he said he will not do it until I got up from where I was seated, approached him and asked him again. That's when he removed the jacket. The jacket is still here in my office,” said Sibanga. The principal continued saying that a few minutes later he heard from another teacher that there was “trouble in a classroom” with a parent. Just as he was leaving his office, the parent of the learner came rushing into his office and asked him: “why do you hate my child”? “The parent did not want to listen to what I had to say. She was angry and it was evident that she was just here to fight for her child and not to listen to what happened. That same day the child was a very angry as well, holding her fists ready to beat me up. Luckily the parent was there to stop him and they went away without being prepared to listen to any of us. The parent caused a huge scene at the teacher's class and was even insulting him. I asked myself: If I was the one that 'clapped' her child, why did she go to the class teacher to insult him?” Sibaga asked. When asked
about this the parent did not deny going to the class teacher. She said she went there to ask the teacher why he took her child's jacket. Sibanga claims that the learner came back the following school day and he (Sibanga) was notified by a teacher that the learner is back at school. He called the learner to his office and told him to go home and call his parent. “I expect the parent to come and at least apologise to me and to the teacher she insulted before her child can come back to school. We cannot pretend like nothing has happened and just go on. How will the teacher now feel having to look at this learner every single day? The learner is totally disrespectful and he and his mother must apologise before we can continue,” Sibanga emphasised. The class teacher of this particular learner confirmed the incident and foretold the chain of events as Sibanga had told namib times and said the reason why he took the learner to the principal is because the day prior to the incident with the pa-rent, the learner was wearing a cap in class and he took it from him after begging him to remove the cap more than four times. Sibanga further said the parent has another learner in school currently busy with his grade 12.
Friday was their valedictory service. “The parent was there and we shook hands, but she did not bother to ask about the child now sitting at home without school. If she was a concerned parent, she would have called or come to see me just to find out what can be done to fix the issue. We have not heard anything from her or the learner,” he said. Mr Sibanga said the Inspector of Education in Swakopmund, Mr Ernest Olivier, has been briefed about the incident. Sibanga added that the community of Swakopmund is very happy with SSS and the way the school and teachings are being conducted.
Visitors complained especially about the bad state of Albatross road leading up to “Platz am Meer,” while also raising concern over the small traffic circle on the corner of Albatros and Fischreiher Street. Will the state of the road be improved in the near future? “Swakopmund's streets are all placed on the maintenance programme and attended to as required,” said the municipal spokesperson, Ailie Gebhardt, to namib times. If the road will be tarred or paved in the near future, is unclear. According to Gebhardt Council will tar the road if there are funds available. Gebhardt further revealed that the mini-circle in question was introduced to facilitate large delivery vehicles as well. The roads leading up to the mall will however not be widened, as there is currently no space and the mall is near a residential area. Since the mall has been opened, the nearby public braai area close to the beach at Vineta point, which has over the past few years become an eyesore, has been destroyed. Council is aware of this fact, Gebhardt said. The destroyed bits were left on the beach further south. “The Municipal Engineering Services Department is dealing with the matter,” Gebhardt stated. New public braai facilities will be constructed elsewhere the spokesperson continued saying. The Municipality of Swakopmund, particularly the Engineering Services department, will be responsible for this.

Platz Am Meer Open Restaurant boat for Walvis Bay Walvis Bay's first floating restaurant, a specially built boat with a capacity to seat 100 people, is due to set sail from a South African shipyard over the weekend. This restaurant vessel is expected to dock in Walvis Bay by 1 October, and is certainly a historic moment for the local tourism and hospitality industry. Eddy Fast GREAT,, those are good news ,,something new can`t wait , the waterfront in walfish bay is magic !! lunch on the vessel and dinner-cruise , hope they doing sunday lunch cruise as well ... Gerrit Loedolff Many years ago I took my girlfriend out for dinner on the Alibama floating restaurant at the V&A waterfront, Cape Town. With an engagement ring fresh from the goldsmith(As in they had the date wrong and I watched it being made while my girlfriend sat in the car. All dressed up and no where to go ) we boarded the Alibama. After the starters I suggested we go on deck to enjoy the view of Cape Town at night. Scared to death that I'll drop the ring in the ocean, I sort of slipped it on te her finger first and then asked her to marry me. It really was very special. Good luck Dean with your endeavours. May it be part of happy memories for many. Jan Hattingh Fantastic! Many, many years ago went on a cruise down the Nile in the 'Scarabee'... Family members, teachers from their primary grades as well as previous staff members of the school, attended this memorable ceremony. The Principal, Mrs Einbeck, delivered a farewell speech to the class and commended them for their diligence, excellent behaviour and respect towards the teachers of the school. During the ceremony, a few tears were shed as they shared memories of their journey at the school throughout the years. Some of these learners have been at Duneside since Pre-Primary, while others only joined the class in Grade 8. The parents were invited for tea and snacks after the ceremony, while the Grade 12s bid farewell to the rest of the school. The school is immensely proud of these learners and wishes them all the best for their upcoming NSSC exams as well as all their future endevours.

We often lie awake at night, when the world is fast asleep, and take a walk down memorie lane with tears upon our cheeks. Remembering you is easy, we do it everyday, but missing you is heartache that never goes away. We hold you tightly within my heart and there you will remain. Inline Hockey Elite Training Camp This past weekend, 16-18 September, the Namibian Ice and Inline Hockey Association (NIIHA) held its first ever Youth Elite Inline Hockey Camp. Some of the top inline hockey players from the various clubs across the country, in the age divisions 10U, 12U and 14U, were in attendance. The training camp was held at the Coastal Pirates court in The Dome, Swakopmund Indoor Sport Centre, and included many local A-team players joined by players from Windhoek and Otjiwarongo. These elite players focused on enhancing their skating, stick-handling, shooting, passing and team work skills. The camp was run by the Youth Hockey Director and Coach of the Kamikaze Inline Hockey Club, Matt Wojcik, Coach of the Coastal Pirates Inline Hockey Club, Brian Sobel, and ex-Coach of the Scorpions Inline Hockey Club, Zach Sawyer. The kids worked hard on the numerous exercises designed to strengthen their skills, and enjoyed watching one another complete the various activities. This weekend, they join their respective club teams on the same court in Swakopmund, to compete against one another in the NIIHA national league at the Coastal Pirates Tournament.
