Thanks to the quick response by medics from E-Med Rescue 24, Dr Wolfgang Tietz; snake expert, Dr Christo Buys, and the nurses at The Cottage Hospital in Swakopmund, Stuart Hebbard, of the local snake park made a quick recovery after being bitten by a black mamba over the weekend, one of Namibia's most venomous snakes. The incident happened at the snake park on Saturday afternoon. “I was feeding the snakes and put a rat into the cage,” Hebbard explained to namib times yesterday. As is his usual routine, Hebbard made sure it was safe to open the cage when he put in the rat. The glass box, where this particular, three meter long mamba is housed, is located quite high. The snake probably smelled the rat and when it saw Hebbard, struck him on the upper forehead once. “I consider myself extremely lucky,” Hebbard said. Continues on Page 2

snake bite

Usually venomous snakes, when they are used to humans, inject little or no poison when they strike. These “warning bites” are known as dry bites. “This time though the snake injected a poison. Within a minute my body started shivering,” Hebbard continues. He did not really feel any pain, just an indescribable, unbelievable and uncontrollable shivering. The relevant medical emergency service providers were notified and thanks to the quick response time by medical professionals the anti-venom was injected within 25 minutes after the bite, said Hebbard. “If it wasn't for the right treatment I don't know what would have happened,” he said. Once the anti-venom is injected, the treatment works quickly and effectively. Hebbard was allowed to go home after spending one night in hospital for observation. The Swakopmund snake park houses between 50 and 60 different snakes. It is very popular with tourists and pupils where they learn a lot about these intriguing reptiles. Although this is the first incident of this nature at the park, Hebbard will in future take extra precautions when feeding the snakes. called to the scene. There was no trace of Haoseb. Bad visibility darkness caused by foggy conditions and the darkness made the search more difficult. ·By yesterday afternoon the possibility was weighed to deploy divers to search for the missing Haoseb around the jetty's underwater structures. Heavy seas and poor visibility so far made rendered this option impossible.

She left for work at about 7:30 in the morning. “She then placed the key where the others couldn't find it and left for work without informing anyone to take care of the child,” Iikuyu said. “It is further alleged that at about 17:00, more than nine hours later, the suspect's sister and her friend went to the ghetto and found the baby hanging from the bed on the jersey he was wearing,” Iikuyu continued. The baby was dead. Post-mortems will be conducted to determine the cause of death of the infants.

Death incident report, Otjimbingwe: A partially decomposed body, identified as that of Erastus Ndjebela, 33-years old, was found on Saturday, 24 June at about 19:00. A passer by made the discovery near the D1976 road, about 10 km from Otjimbingwe towards the C-32 road. The police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu who confirmed the incident explained the deceased was employed as a herder at Farm Tsaobis, which is about 15 km west of Otjimbingwe Resettlement. It is alleged that on Thursday, 22 June, in the late afternoon, Ndjebela and his friend, also employed as a farm worker at a neighbouring farm, decided to walk from Farm Tsaobis to Otjimbingwe Resettlement. They were heavily under the influence of alcohol. They allegedly went via Farm Okarundu where they bought more alcohol and continued their journey on foot. According to Iikuyu, it is further alleged that on their way the deceased complained of experiencing weakness in his legs. He decided to rest under a tree and his friend decided to continue his journey on foot. He left Ndjebela behind, not knowing that his condition was imminent to cause his death. “Ndjebela's body was only discovered by a passer by on Saturday 24 June, a few meters from where his friend left him. No foul play is suspected”, Iikuyu added. The body was taken to the Walvis Bay police mortuary for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death. The deceased next-of-kin were informed. No inquest was registered yet, pending the autopsy results.

Walvis Bay Prison hands out certificates to inmates

ACC requires more manpower to speed up finalising investigations

The Ombetja Yehinga Organisation (OYO) held a workshop in basic skills in selfdiscipline, self-esteem and self-consciousness at the Walvis Bay Prison recently. This workshop is the last of similar workshops that was held at correctional facilities countrywide for inmates.

Sharlien Tjambari

On a disappointing note, this workshop will discontinue indefinitely, as funds ran out. During a media session with namib times OYO appealed for both Government and the private sector to assist in continuing with these workshops in future. Namibia's correctional services network is based on the principle of rehabilitation of offenders and workshops like these are important in the process of rehabilitation of inmates, it was explained. On the picture herewith: inmates with the Acting Head of the Walvis Bay Prison, Commissioner L Hangula and course facilitators during the handout of certificates of attendance. Hangula during the certificate handout applauded a program that is administered by inmates whereby they visit schools and educate learners on the devastating effect drugs have on children and how it negatively affects people in their adult lives thereafter.

The Swakopmund Office of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) conducted information sharing sessions, workshops, seminars and a media campaign with 28 different institutions, with the aim of reducing corruption through an aggressive public awareness campaign. This was revealed by Clr Cleophas Mutjavikua, the Governor of Erongo during his State of the Region Address (SORA) on Thursday. In his speech, Clr Mutjavikua said during the period under review 44 cases were reported to the ACC of which 19 cases have been finalised. This constitutes 45% of the cases received. Furthermore, 20 cases are in the process of investigation and two cases were referred to other institutions. Three cases were submitted to the Prosecutor General for a decision whether to prosecute. Clr Mutjavikua also shared some of the challenges the ACC is faced with. Amongst these he noted that the ACC requires more manpower. Especially with regards to investigations to speed up the finalisation of cases. “The financial constraints also played a role. Especially when it comes to prevention activities, as well as awareness activities. The perception of the ACC being toothless and only targeting the public sector and small cases is also a challenge, the Governor said. He continued saying that the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS), the Regional Councils (RC) and Local Authorities (LA) have a pivotal role to play. Specifically to enhance transparency and accountability in budget management. Budget management focuses funds for the purpose intended. Clr Mutjavikua in this regard stressed the importance of Regional- and Local Authorities taking accountability for public funds and to develop the responsibility to manage public funds well.

South African bodyboarder sustains spinal shock injury at Donkey Bay A South African bodyboarder, Stefan Dryer, escaped a near-death incident on Tuesday at the popular surfing spot, Donkey Bay. Eyewitnesses reported Dryer go down hard on a set wave – thanks to the quick reaction by other surfers he was treated on scene and admitted to hospital. His condition is stable. Initial reports indicated that Dryer sustained a spinal fracture when he went down headfirst in the shallow water and smashed into the ground. X-Rays have revealed that he is in the clear. Medics suggested that he sustained a spinal shock injury when he hit the bottom, which may cause temporary paralysis. By Wednesday he was still in hospital, but he was able to move his legs. He left back home yesterday. Only hours after the terrifying incident on Tuesday this week “Stab Magazine”, a men's interest magazine with an emphasis on high-performance surfing, released a detailed report on what transpired. Many surfers, be they local or international, looked at Donkey Bay with new respect. Donkey Bay, internationally known as Skeleton Bay, is regarded as one of the best surfing spots in the world – when the right conditions present themselves – but it is also has some of the most challenging waves to surf. After the renovations for the new “Bonus Marktplatz” shopping arcade commenced, a sketchbook belonging to Namibian artist Johannes Blatt dating back to 1931 was discovered in the roof structure of the building..Johannes Blatt, as well as his son Arnfried Blatt were amongst the most celebrated artists in Namibia and their artworks are worth a fortune. Johannes Blatt and his wife Gertrud stayed in the Bonusmarkt building after his father-in-law, Mr Aladar Hrabovsky, bought the property for his newlywed daughter. The book was discovered once the renovations of the old building progressed to the loft's ceiling.“We found quite a few personal items there, amongst them was the sketchbook,” confirmed Quinton Liebenberg, CEO of the Lighthouse Group. The sketches were valuated, but their value was not determined to be very high. The book features a handful of sketches. “Strandwolf”spotted in Kramersdorf A rare sight indeed: Swakopmund resident Ockert Botha spotted an adult brown hyena, colloquially known as the strandwolf, over the past weekend in the suburb Kramersdorf while he was on his way home. The animal was spotted at the eastern end of Anton Lubowski Street. “It was about 21:30 while I was on my way home. I saw the animal and it initially ran off, but then sat down close to a wall,” Botha said to namib times. Although brown hyenas are very shy animals by nature, they are on occasion spotted by residents in that area. About a month ago a brown hyena was found dead on the Swakopmund bridge on the road towards Walvis Bay. The animal was most likely hit by a car. The brown hyena IS listed as “near threatened” according to the IUCN 3.1. Alex Muukua If they are more then one and u are alone in the dunes, then your end has cme They make u their lunch packs Very dangerous animals....i found at 2 at pelican point areas to, but very big and fat... Toya Louw They are not very dangerous animals , they are extremely shy and more afraid of you then what you are of them. Please don't harm them Richard Klein They may seem shy but will attack when they get the chance Christilene Abrahams Die diere is besig om uit te sterf.

These questions are asked because we have never heard of attacks by these animals. Richard Klein There is one big one moving in the area from myl 8 and just past myl 14 see it regularly and it comes very near to people plus minus 20 meters using the night as camouflage. The other day a group that had a braai at night at myl 8 got a good scare when that big hyena was about 15 meters from them Chantelle Roets These are gorgeous animals, but I really would poop myself if I were to come across one at night because they confuse your brain at first glance since they don't immediately resemble a canine. Hence I mistook one for a demonic thing for 0.005 seconds when I saw it a few years ago. Emsie Verwey Awesome! What a great privilege to see one in town! They will NOT attack you. Katja Conrad Wouldn't it be better to get it to a safe location - it is not safe if humans are close... Richard Klein They come in to town sometime at night but move out again before sun rise. They come to look for food and something to drink Adri Pretorius PLEASE do not harm it!! Edgar Irle This is absolutely new to me. Thanks for the article and pic. Mike Duck Saw one at myl 68 near the soutpanne.Early one morning on my way to myl 108 Marti Ouwencamp Skrypzeck I hope it wil be safe in Swakopmund!!! Julia Moller Do they attack humans Roswitha Schulz Only if threatened, as far as I know. Chantelle Bosch. Danel van Rooyen Don't threaten them or confront them. then they are shy. Another Councillor arrested for dealing in suspected stolen stock The police in the Erongo region has arrested another municipal Councillor for allegedly dealing in suspected stolen stock. The arrest of Usakos town councilor, Tuhafeni Haufiku, follows only days after Henties Bay mayor, Herman Honeb, was arrested and charged for receiving and selling a suspected stolen cattle carcass. According to deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, it is alleged that on Sunday (11 June) between 19:30 and 22:00 two suspects, Otto Tsuseb (52) and Willem Claasen (41) allegedly brought two suspected stolen goats to Usakos from a farm known as Steenbank. It was the purpose of trading the animals. They allegedly sold the goats to Usakos town councillor Tuhafeni Haufiku (48) without any valid document or identification on delivery. The incident allegedly took place at the Hakhaseb suburb of Usakos. The goats were recovered on Tuesday (20 June) at the Councillor's farm in the Usakos area. The total value of the animals is estimated at N$1 600. The owner of the goats has not been located yet. Kurt Tohermes Of course. Noone has expected any other develpment....

Swakopmund municipality’s Project Shine launched Last week Friday, 16 June the Municipality of Swakopmund launched Project Shine. Project Shine is an initiative aimed at keeping the town of Swakopmund Clean and it runs from June to November annually. This year marks the tenth year of Project Shine which was inaugurated in 2007. Project Shine is an initiative that invites nonprofit organizations to provide their services to clean predetermined areas in and around Swakopmund as well as to raise awareness and to educate the community on the benefits of sustaining the environment in a clean and tidy condition. Councilor Assertha Marsh, a member of the Management Committee said the community need to meet the municipality half way by cleaning their immediate surroundings and keeping it clean at all times. Marsh said she is grateful to see that through private and public partnerships they can take a stand and assist one another in achieving environmental goals relating to waste management. She continued saying “we just have to continue to be steadfast in our goals and to secure sustainable environmental education, which remains a high priority on our agenda. In order to achieve this, all tour operators, long distance taxi drivers and the local community must be educated on the negative environmental affect littering has on our society”. Marsh urged residents of Swakopmund to join the Municipality in making Swakopmund the cleanest city in Namibia, which they can all be proud of. Alex Muukua I love swakopmund nice clean town, but truely between Swakopmund & Arandis very dirty Something must be done there, either permanente employers must be recruiting there.... Roswitha Schulz It is a pleasure to visit Swakopmund, because it is very clean!

Senior Golf On Thursday, 22nd June, we played the monthly Bank Windhoek sponsored competition. The field is split into 2 teams (A and B) and at the end of play the team with the best total stable ford score gets to share the prizes on offer. This month the winning team with 163 points was the “A” team consisting of Flippie, Piet, Achmet, Brian, Christo, Vic, Sigi and Dirk, thanks mainly to an excellent 40 points scored by Achmet. The “B” team scored 154 points. On Friday, 23rd June, 16 of the Rossmund senior golfers met up with 16 of the Windhoek senior golfers at the Walvis Bay golf club to play for the Fanie Augustyn trophy. This challenge was previously contested on an annual basis at the Klippenberg GC, but when Klippenberg closed it was decided to play each year on an independent course – hence the Walvis Bay gathering. To determine the winner, the top three scores of each side are taken. It turned out to be a close contest with the Windhoek guys scoring 110 points and the Rossmund guys scoring 112 points, thanks mainly to an excellent score of 40 points contributed by Francois Loots. Francois also received the trophy for the best individual score of the day. Narraville-born Zhivago Groenewald - huge in Cricket Rudi Bowe Zhivago Groenewald was born on 8 June 1993 in Walvis Bay. He was one of three boys. His one brother also plays cricket and rugby and the younger one is playing rugby in Durban for the under 21 team of the Sharks. Also for the university that he is attending. As a youngster he and his brother played cricket at an open space near his parent's house in Narraville. Mr John Heyns stopped and ask if they would like to play club cricket. The rest was is history. At the age of nine he was selected to play for the Namibian under 13 schools team in Botswana [Zone 6]. Aged 13 he had to choose between cricket and rugby. At the age of 13 he was selected for both the under 15 cricket and under 13 schools national teams. As the dates of both tournaments coincided he had to make the

choice. His proud father, Mr Ruben Groenewald advised him to play cricket, as it will be better for my future. At the age of 16, he went with the national under 19 team to Zambia for the under 19 World Cup qualifier. That year the national under 19 team did not make it to the World Cup as they ended 3rd. In the year that he turned 17, Zhivago was the Namibian Development Player of the year. At 18 [his grade 12 year], he played his first game for the Senior National Team in a World Cup qualifier in Dubai (this was in April). In August the same year he played for the under 19 World Cup qualifier. In October the same year he wrote his Grade 12 exams. He hardly had school for the year, wrote his exams and passed grade 12! The next year, aged 19, Zhivago signed a contract with the Namibian Cricket Board and relocated to Windhoek. At the age of 20, he stopped playing cricket

and then moved back to his home town and started playing rugby for Kudus Rugby Club. After two years he returned to the capital city and started playing cricket again - for the CCD Cricket Club. Zhivago’s professional career started when his father got in contact with an agent called Bob. The agent signed him up with a club in England, but as he only played four first class games by then he could not play in England. The agent then landed him a contract with Salland Cricket Club in Deventer, Netherlands. He adapted well to his new environment. He played three games at his new club and was placed third on the clubs batting rank. He is currently sixth on the top bowling list. At his new club he also coached the under 11 and under 13 teams. Zhivago would love to pursue his studies in Sports Management. He did obtain a level two coaching certificate. Zhivago is now back home after he played for Namibia in their winning game against Scotland. He will go back to the Netherlands after he finalized his visa. Later this year he will be back to represent Namibia in two important games. After his cricket career he intends to return to Walvis Bay to help with the development of cricket at youth level. Zhivago had a message for the youth: “you are as good as any other person and if you dream of pursuing your sport career overseas, just enjoy the journey and do your best. Your dreams will come true”. His favourite food: My ma se Kos (my mom's food). Favourite Movies: All action movies Last book read: Ronaldo Favourite Car: “I would like to own an A45 AMG. The Rugby and Cricket team of Australia are his favourite international teams. His role model: Sangakara, a cricket player from Sri Lanka. His dream: to one day look back at a life where he reached the goals he wanted, to share it with his child and for his child to follow in his footsteps. ·Zhivago visited the office of namib times on Friday and handed one of his National shirts to the newspaper’s management as a token of appreciation. One of the Directors, Mr Desmond Frankfort, received the shirt on behalf of the newspaper and wished the young man well in his career as professional cricketer. “Keep Walvis Bay and our country’s name high and work hard at your sport career”, said Frankfort.

Namibian Indoor Women’s Hockey Team qualifies for the World Cup The Namibian Women's Hockey Team became the second sports team [after rugby] to represent Namibia at World Cup level. “All the honour and glory to God”, this was the words of coach Ervin Handura, after his team beat South Africa at the Indoor Hockey World Cup Qualifiers in Swakopmund on Saturday. Marcia Venter scored the first goal for Namibia within the first five minutes. South Africa scored twice and the score was 2-1. Gillian Hermanus made no mistake as she equaled the score from a penalty. The half time score was 2-2. In the second half the Namibians made one attack after the other, but the defense of South Africa held firm. Half way in the second half the South Africans came on strong with attack after attack. With five minutes left in the game they scored and it was now 3-2 in favour of South Africa and the hour glass was almost empty. With one minute left in the game Namibia set up an attack and kept S.A. under pressure. Then it happened: Marcia Venter put the ball pass the goal keeper of S.A. Final score: 3-3. That forced the game in to penalties. The Namibian goal keeper Petro Stoffberg saved the first shot of South Africa, Gillian Hermanus scored for Namibia. The second shot

of S.A. was again saved by Petro Stoffberg. Marcia Venter scored a second goal for Namibia to win the game 2-0 on penalties. ·The Namibian Men's team lost in the final 1-2 to South Africa. Abner Xoagub the president of the Namibia National Olympic Committee congratulated the Namibian Women’s Team on their achievement. “I am very happy with this achievement, as the Hockey Union has put a lot of effort and money into this”. He also thanked the team’s sponsor: Seaflower. He further said: “they have lost with high scores to South Africans in this tournament, but in the final they kept their composure to qualify for the World Cup”. Xoagub said Namibia's men showed great improvement but still lacked on the offensive side. Xoagub encouraged more SADC-countries to take up indoor hockey, so that the standard can improve in the region. Maggie Mengo, Namibia’s captain, won the Player of the Tournament award for the women while Brynn Cleak won the Player of the Tournament award and DJ Strauss the Goalkeeper of the Tournament for the men. The Indoor Hockey World Cup will be held in Berlin, Germany from 7 to 11 February 2018.
