Traffic operation nets 14 Namibians must take responsidrunken drivers bility for public facilities

Fourteen people were arrested for drunken driving in Walvis Bay since Thursday, the municipal traffic chief, Superintendent Eben Platt said yesterday. These drivers all appeared in the magistrate's court and entered different pleas. An operation to bring traffic offenders to the book has started last week and has one purpose: to reduce the number of traffic accidents in the harbour town and to make motorists aware of disciplined behaviour behind the steering wheel. Apart from a clamp down on drunken drivers, a total of 44 drivers were arrested as there were warrants of arrests against them for failing to pay traffic fines and subsequent failure to appear in court. Traffic officials also pulled over vehicles for roadworthiness inspections. Three trucks of China Harbour and Engineering Company (CHEC) were found to be unroadworthy and they were summarily taken off the road. A taxi was also declared unroadworthy and taken off the road. Ear Institute – for the people of Namibia When launching the Ear Institute in Namibia in 2008, a first facility was opened in Windhoek. Soon it was followed by a second facility situated in Swakopmund. Both facilities were provided with state of the art equipment and are staffed by highly trained audiologists. In view of the geographical distribution of the Namibian population, where more than 50 percent are situated in the Northern regions, it was quickly realised that the two facilities in the Khomas and Erongo regions, does not provide adequate hearing health services for the Namibian population. Furthermore, the prevalence of hearing impairment in the Namibian population is fairly high. This can partly be attributed to a growing ageing population. Noise-induced hearing loss associated with military activities, hunting, mining and certain industries, are also prevalent. Evidently, there is a particular need for hearing health services in the Northern regions. The Ear Institute therefore accepted this challenge. Modern portable equipment was made available to a third unit. This mobile facility will provide hearing health services in the Otjizondjupa, Oshikoto, Oshana and Kavango regions. An audiologist based at Tsumeb Private Hospital will, as determined by the requirement for services, visit clinics such as Otjiwarongo Medical Practice, Ongwediva Medipark, Rundu Private Hospital and Grootfontein Medi-Wize Pharmacy. By introducing this additional hearing health service, a key objective for establishing an Ear Institute in Namibia was reached. The only beach public braai area in Swakopmund, which is commonly known as the OK Parking Braai, has deteriorated to such a bad condition that it is becoming an embarrassment and a source of frustration to residents. With the festive holiday season approaching, it is said this certainly does not contribute to a positive image for Swakopmund. Swakopmund is well-known for its beautiful beaches and attracts a lot of visitors with summer activities, normally in December. This year it is believed that the Beach Colour Festival will be hosted in Swakopmund. It is expected to attract even more visitors to Swakopmund. The festival will be hosted in the vicinity of OK Parking Braai area, but the facilities are vandalised. The area is not user friendly. Apart from being vandalised, it poses a danger in that a lot of broken glasses and bottles scatter the area and people urinate against some of the walls and structures as they are too lazy to walk to the ablution area. When namib times asked residents over the dilapidated facility, they felt the Swakopmund municipality should put in more effort to beautify the braai area. It is after all the only public beach braai area and it would be advisable to add a children

playground. namib times contacted the Swakopmund municipality to inquire if there will be any renovations to the OK Parking Braai area before December this year. At the time of going to press no feedback was forthcoming yet. · One member of the public agreed the municipality should do something, but added it is not the municipality that vandalised the area, nor is it the municipality urinating on the facilities or breaking glasses and bottles in the area. “It is high time that we as Namibians take responsibility for public facilities. After all, it is our tax money going into these facilities, but unfortunately you will always get some people misbehaving and in essence deprive him or herself and his or her fellow Namibians from places where they can enjoy themselves”, explained this resident.

Two accidents over the weekend Suspect escapes at Walvis Bay Piquet Jacobs

magistrate’s court

An Izuzu double cab veered off the road and overturned on the C34 route early Sunday morning. The incident took place 20km south of Henties Bay at the roadworks. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle in unfavourable road conditions. No serious injuries were reported.

A trial-awaiting prisoner escaped from custody while being escorted from the court holding cell to the police van at the Walvis Bay magistrates court on Friday.

On Friday afternoon, a sedan vehicle with four occupants overturned on the B2 route. The incident occurred 2 km from Arandis towards Swakop. The driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, which caused it to veer off the road and

overturn. Only one of the occupants sustained serious, yet not life threatening injuries. The remaining three occupants miraculously escaped unscathed.

Savagely beaten victim still unable to speak about ordeal Erwin Leuschner The person who was recently assaulted and left for dead in the desert in the vicinity of DRC close to the Henties Bay road has been identified. Oscar Impala Goreseb (47) is recovering in the Katutura State Hospital in Windhoek to where he was transferred, but is still unable to speak and identify his attacker/s. According to Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, the unconscious Goreseb was found in the desert on the morning of Monday (18 September). The victim's girlfriend alleges the last time she saw Goreseb was two days prior to the incident. Goreseb told her he was going out to a party at Toatite Bar in Mondesa, where he also helps cleaning from time to time. When Goreseb was found tow day later, he was described as being severely traumatised and unable to speak. He was savagely beaten and sustained possible

internal bleeding, broken ribs and bruises all over his body. He is thought to have been exposed to extreme desert conditions for hours, as he was also suffering from severe hypothermia. According to Iikuyu, the victim is in a critical condition and is still unable to communicate. He was transferred to the Katutura State Hospital for further medical treatment. So far, no suspect has been arrested. The Police is requesting public assistance in this regard, to identify the suspect/s who assaulted the victim.

Corrosion renders this sign useless Sharlien Tjambari A resident of Swakopmund supplied the newspaper with recently taken picture of a road sign on the B2 coastal road, so corroded it is about to fall apart. It is a distance indicator. A visitor who is not familiar with the road will not be able to properly read the sign, especially during the night. Attempts to get hold of the Roads Authority, which is responsible for repairing road signs on the B2, were not successful. This road sign is just a few meters away from the Swakopmund bridge as you drive in the direction of Walvis Bay.

Andreas Victor Kaushi (32) was in custody for armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm. ¡ Kaushi allegedly man-aged to run away as police officers were moving him from the cells to the vehicle. He is originally from the Oshikolongondjo village in the Oshana Region, though currently resides in Walvis Bay. He visits Swakopmund regularly. Anyone with information on the escapee's whereabouts

is reques-ted to contact Dep. Comm. Iikuyu, or Sgt Haufiku cell. 081 219 4573, or I/O Det. Sgt. Shitima cell: 081 304 9064 or report to

Sardinha-family views education as key element to eradicate poverty Piquet Jacobs

Various schools in Walvis Bay received financial contributions from Walvis Bay Self Service (Multisave), Kuiseb Shop 4 Value Superstore and Kuiseb Powersave Cash & Carry on Thursday, to aid these schools in their prize-giving ceremonies.

These funds will be used to reward learners for their hard work during the school year of 2017 and it will also encourage other learners to work harder at their school careers. The donation totals N$185 000. The donation was handed over on behalf of the above three businesses by Mr Nardo Sardinha. Mr Sardinha represented other members of the Sardinha family who co-own the above retail business houses. “We as a family, me in particular, believe education is the key element to eradicate poverty. We therefore place a high value on supporting schools in Walvis Bay. We hope the schools will put the funds to good use, Mr Sardinha said at the handover ceremony at Tutaleni Primary School on Thursday. Adding this is one way to plough back into the local community where these businesses operate. The various principals of the schools that benefitted, De Duine Secondary School, Tutaleni High School, Duinesig Combined School, Kuisebmond Secondary School, !Nara Primary School, Tutaleni Primary School, Kuisebmond Primary School, Immanuel Ruiters Primary School and Kuisebmond Primary Project School, expressed their gratitude to the Sardinha-family for this generous donation.

Police delivers Erongo drug dealers another hard blow

Join hands against murder Solidarity. This is what Clinton Lang, organiser of the upcoming silent protest at the Swakopmund magistrates court, wishes to see. "We are fed up with the rising crime wave. We want to show solidarity," he told namib times this week. The silent protest will start on Tuesday (26 September) at 09:00 at the Amphitheatre and coincides with the court appearance of the three suspects accused of murdering Siegfried Paul Helmuth Strzelecki (82) and his wifeSieglinde (79) at the beginning of August. After meeting at the Amphitheatre all attendees will move in front of the court. "There will not be a petition that the whole town signs. The event focuses on the town showing solidarity", Lang continued. To show solidarity, all attendees will hold hands at 10:00 and form a human chain in the area. "We want to show the people that we are all together and that we, as a town, show that this is very serious," he added. Hildegard Jensen Wish I could be there to support the protest. Less salt trucks on Walvis Bay's streets The number of hauls of bulk salt from the salt works to the port of Walvis Bay's bulk salt terminal is to reduce by one thousand trips per month with immediate effect, Walvis Bay Salt Refiners announced this week. This is thanks to an overhauled fleet of side tipping trucks, that can each carry a load of 34 tons of salt, to replace the current fleet of trucks that can carry only 20 tons per haul. The announcement was made on Tuesday at the mine site of Walvis Bay Salt Refiners where the company's logistics service provider, Unitrans, showcased the nine trucks which will replace the current fleet. For the occasion the Chief Operating Officer of Unitrans International, Mr Terry Bantock personally attended and said this was an initiative for change. Bantock explained as a logistics service provider, there are many challenges that has to balance out. A safe speed, the fact that salt is hauled on main routes in Walvis Bay, the time window of operations, the fact that no salt spillage may take place and overloading are a few such factors that need to be managed constantly. Elmare Kotze This will be very good. Maybe they will then stop using the side street and our street will have a stop street for a change seeing that the salt trucks keep on driving it over. Fanie Du Preez This is very good news as the trucks used up to now did spill salt and salt water all the way on our streets, with the results that all the other vehicles that used the streets, corroded fast. The local authority should never allow these type of trucks to carry salt on our streets. Rainhold Nepolo Msilela YaMbago It's good to the company but to the employee especially the driver's it means less salary.

Three accidents in less than 24 hours In less than twenty-four hours between Tuesday and Wednesday morning of this week, three accidents involving pick-up trucks were reported in the coast region. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured in any of these incidents. In the most recent incident, a pick-up truck seemingly veered off the road and overturned on the MR44 route (behind the dunes) after the driver lost control. The incident appears to have taken place in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Motorists on their way to work came across the scene and reported it to the relevant authorities. The driver of the vehicle was nowhere to be seen. Eu Gene This driver lost control nd veered off the road story is taboo, 3 guys in less thn 24hours with similar accidents, cant we see thts the works of the devil. Whole day needed to bury 20-ton whale The Henties Bay municipality acted very swiftly and has buried the dead humpback whale which stranded on Monday at Solitude, about one kilometer south of the town. The whale weighed close to 20 tons - it took the entire day to bury the carcass of this marine mammal. According to Simon Elwen of the Namibian Dolphin Project (NDP), it was a female humpback whale which was 12.9 meters long. "It was a young adult and probably between two and four years old," he explained. He added the whale stranded alive. "The cause of death is unknown, as there were no signs of external injury beyond scratches received presumably during the stranding process itself," he said. Lucy Imms Mbago Why didn't they just give to people to eat.

The police in the Erongo region has given the drug trade yet another painful blow with a total of five suspects arrested for the possession of various drugs, including mandrax, cannabis and cocaine valued at more than N$30 000. This success was recently revealed by Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo. According to Iikuyu the police arrested the first three suspects during a drug operation at Usakos. Terence Gurirab (28) was arrested at his house in the Hakhaseb suburb on Friday at about 21:00 after he was found in the possession of 130 grams of cannabis; nine mandrax tablets; one half mandrax tablet; one quarter mandrax tablet and 105 “balies” of cannabis. The total value of the drugs is estimated at N$2 375. Khaibasen Kontroleer Nauseb From what I know about Governments. Those same drugs are gonna be put back on the streets for further circulation. And which ever officer that caused the arrest in the first place will be promoted and sent to another region, so he won't disturb the cash flow. Kai van der Bijl Really? You're going to mention a total of 4 Mandrax tablets XD? And how much is a "unit" of cocaine? But good job on the cannabis... Two missing persons in Usakos The Pienaar family at Usakos is looking for their daughter, Jade Pienaar (16), who left home on Tuesday morning at 06:00 and has since not returned home. The missing girl is a pupil at Usakos Junior Secondary School. Pienaar disappeared from home 349, Hakhaseb location at Usa-kos, her family residence. According to police report the girl allegedly packed her clothing bag before she left. Yesterday (Thursday) morning her sister confirmed the girl has not been found yet, and no news about Pienaar's whereabouts have come to light. In a social media message her sister, Jennifer Pienaar, said the girl's phone was off and they (the family) do not know where she is. “Please please I urge everyone to help us find her, if you have seen her in Usakos or any other town” [sic], she is quoted from social media. Anyone with information can contact Jennifer Pienaar on 081 620 1128, or their nearest police station. Walvis Bay Pharmacy celebrates 65 years Piquet Jacobs

The Walvis Bay Pharmacy, which opened its doors in 1952, is celebrating its 65th birthday this year. The pharmacy was opened by Hans Marschner in 7th Street. The business was then taken over by his son, Gerd Marschner in 1974. Marschner is still active in the business today. The pharmacy moved to a new premises in 2013, though remained in the same street and has kept a few relics of the original pharmacy. The pharmacy has preserved a part of Walvis Bay's history for all these years. Gerd's grandfather, Hermann Marschner, opened the 'Reich's Apotheke' in LĂźderitz in 1909, which is also still in existence to this day. The Walvis Bay Pharmacy would like to thank each and every customer for the support for the past 65 years, as their support has kept the pharmacy open for all these years.

3x3 Basketball Namibian African States Bowles Tournament 2017 Tour 2017 The mission of Namibian Basketball Federation's (NBF) 5 year plan is to develop basketball at grassroot level within schools all around Namibia. The NBF has embarked on a youth basketball project with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), The Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) and the Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC). All the above-mentioned organizations approve and support the project. The NBF will promote and organize 3 x 3 basketball tournaments in all the regions of Namibia to officially recognize 3x3 basketball as an Olympic sports code. This was made possible with companies such as OTB Sport and Streethouse who has made generous donations of equipment and cash worth N$ 20 000 all together. To launch the sports code the NBF will tour 3 regions Oshana, Erongo and Khomas respectively to market the sports code and encourage the youth to participate in these local tournaments. The tournaments will host basketball 3on3 games for all age groups both male and female teams however the focus will be on

the u/18 teams as these tournaments will be used as a platform to select a final 3x3 team of male and female to represent Namibia at a world tour qualifier tournament in Botswana on November 2017. The NBF has aligned its vision with the NSC to developed sports codes and encourage international participation; this can only be realized if the NBF creates platforms for the youth to participate at National and International competitions like the youth qualifiers. The NBF 3x3 tour will create a stage to select the best under 18 boys and girls National team to represent the nation. The tournament will be held in Erongo Region (Walvis Bay) at a Venue and date to will be confirmed in due course. All age groups (ages U/13, U/15, U/18 and over 18) male and female are urges to start register on line for the tournament. Get your basketball and registration forms at www.namibianbastekball.com and to register your personal profiles go to http://play.fiba.3x3.com

Namib Diesel Social Squash Doubles League So much for Spring Ha! It seems it was given amiss skipped summer and shot back into Autumn and Winter again, but looking on the bright side the doubles squash is hot. There is definitely not as much tomfoolery on the courts, as in the past, which has shown just how much the popularity of doubles has grown. The teams are in it to win it, competitiveness is big and it is a pleasure to watch. The results for Wednesday 20thare as follows; Men's A Section; Emil Dorgeloh and DanieGreeff beat Jewellery Boutique: Wynand Breytenbach and Jacques Steenkamp 3-0. These two make it look so easy and are definitely in a league of their own. Leslie Bosman and Brandon Granebt Fuel Pump Repairs Africa: Jaco de Witt and Angelo Titus 3-2. What a great lengthy match; Les and Brandon managing to pull off the shots that counted when they were most needed. Imanuel Amorongo and Stefan van Tonder beat Erongo Equipment Hire: Michael Stauder and Trevor Heath 3-1. What a pair of circuit breakers. Imanuel and Stefan brought on their A-Game and snuffed any attempted surge from Michi and Trev. Men's B Section; Luke & Jon Allen beat Drikus Zwart and Chris Bruyns 3-2. Luke and Jon stuck to their guns and pulled off a great victory. Blacke Zwart and Pieter Beukes beat JC Platt and Tilden Smith 3-0. It was an electrifying performance by Blackie and Pieter. Mixed A section; Angelo Titus/Carla Cummings beat Eric and Ricku Mans 3-0. Communication difficulties on the court between Eric and Ricku

allowed Angie and Carla to take a reasonably easy win.Emil Dorgeloh and Chantel de Gouveia beat Bykes Muashekele and Lindsay Lottering 3-0. No doubt Emil and Chantel feels like they have targets on their backs, as they're the duo to take down. Imanuel Amorongo and Christelle Eiman beat Edwin van Urk and Arlene Visser 3-0. Edwin and Arlene found out the hard way that Imanuel and Christelle seems to gel well together. Mixed B section; Amy Volker & Victor Rigby beat Lindi Dreyer and Gabriela 3-0. Amy with Victor as a stand in partner has a good understanding of how doubles should be played, as they both play regularly. Zeenad Martins and Charlton Brussel beat HeibriAnn and Alan Hartung 3-0. Zeenad and Charlton have that extra oomph that makes them a formidable duo. Doyle de Haas & Cindy Kruger beat Liandro Martins and Jacoline Oelofse 3-0. Doyle and Cindy with the experience behind them went through the motions quite effortlessly. Anna Maria Venter and Jaco de Jager beat Christo van Wyk and Zola Nel 3-0.Anna Maria and Jaco old hands at the game did what was expected of them. ‘

The Namibian Bowls team returned this weekend from the African th th States Tournament held in Johannesburg from 10 to 16 September. They returned with 6 out of a possible 8 medals in the 4 disciplines. Participating countries were Botswana, Malawi, South Africa, Kenya, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. In the four individual disciplines, namely Pairs, Trips, Fours and Singles, Namibia's fortunes were mixed. They nevertheless returned with a bronze rd and silver medal for overall performance: the men's team ended 3 overall nd and the ladies' team 2 . Marietjie van den Bergh emerged as one of Namibia's best women's bowlers and the best singles player in Africa by bagging the gold medal for Namibia in this discipline. She made short work of her opponents, losing only to Kenya, who eventually managed bronze. In addition to the singles gold medal, Marietjie and her Pairs partner, Anjuleen Viljoen, proved too strong for their opposition and came away with the gold medal in the Pairs discipline. The ladies Fours team, consisting of Lesley Vermeulen, Sheena du Toit, Amanda Steenkamp and Anjuleen Viljoen, proved their worth by bringing home the bronze medal, behind South Africa and Zambia. The Trips team (Lesley Vermeulen, Sheena du TOit and Amanda Steenkamp) did not fare as well and ended 5th out of 6 countries. Malawi did not field a Ladies' team. As with the Ladies'team, the Men's team had their share of ups and downs. The big drama occurred during the last game of the Pairs discipline. Namibia, represented by Will Esterhuizen and Douw Calitz, had not lost a game up to that point but their opponents, South Africa had lost one game. According to the official score sheet, Namibia had a shot difference of +72, while South Africa's shot difference was +69. This allowed Namibia to lose by one shot and still retain the gold medal. On the last end of the game, Namibia was holding two shots and had the last bowl. If there was no change, Namibia would lose the game 17-18 and still get gold. The South Africans all confirmed that Namibia was guaranteed gold and the last bowl did not have to be played. Will Esterhuizen did play his bowl but delivered it wide, away from any danger. After the game, the tournament committee admitted making a typing error on the official charts handed out before the game and that Namibia's shot difference was actually +71. Both teams ended with a shot difference of +70 but South Africa's shot percentage was 0.04% better than that of Namibia, thus shifting Namibia to the silver medal position. The Men's Trips team, consisting of Graham Snyman, Piet Appollis and th Axel Krahenbuhl did not fare too well, finishing in 5 place oup of seven countries. The Trips team was joined by Will Esterhuizen to make up Namibia's Fours team. This team flew the flag high by winning four of their six games to end with the silver medal behind Botswana. South Africa was third. Namibia's Mens'singles player, Douw Calitz, was involved in a number of extremely close games, which could have gone either way, but eventually proved why he is in the Namibian team by winning four of his six games and bringing home the bronze medal, finishing behind South Africa (gold) and Zimbabwe (silver). Once again, it was a very successful African States Tournament and once again Namibia showed why they have a big place on the African Bowls stage. Not bad for a country with less than 200 bowlers country-wide, where some clubs in South Africa have more member than that. COMPLETE MEDALS TABLES

Fish Eagle Rally The Playboys Motor Cycle Club is once again excited to host the largest motorcycle rally in Namibia. This is to generate greatly needed funds to make a difference in our community. This event brings together hundreds of motorcycle enthusiastic and riders from all over the country as well as neighbouring countries. Walvis Bay enjoys a tourism injection of more than 500 visitors who go on boat trips, stay in B&B's, eat out, etc. The community gets a chance to see some exciting drag races and stunt men as well as the fun and games of the bikers - at no cost. The event will be hosted at Sparta United Sport Club on 30 September in Walvis Bay. (The aim for the Fish Eagle Rally in 2017 will be) to generate at least the interest of 500 weekend visitors, to see over 600 day visitors, to have more than 400 bikes at the rally, to entertain the crowds with great bands from Namibia and South Africa and to have at least N$50 000 available to give back to the community. The most important fact is that, during the year, many present and pressing needs will come to our attention. These will be the initiatives we will invest our time and money in. Our main aim will be towards the elderly of Namibia. So many other welfare organisations aim at the children and the animals but sadly, our elderly is grossly neglected.
