Namibian Passport books arrive – huge backlog to clear first Eileen van der Schyff

It is a matter now of rolling up the sleeves and getting to work. The Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration received new blank passports and must deal with a backlog in the issuing of approximately 15 000 passports.

Namibians have been suffering a service delivery vault of several months now, as there were no blank [virgin] passports available for issuing. People had to endure the frustrations of having to travel with a temporary travel document and even had to stay at home as some countries did not accept this travel document.

Hinda-Mbuende, announced the batch of new blank passport books arrived on Monday 14 October. These new passports will have a ten-year validity.

Namibians were stunned in May this year when it was announced the Ministry ran out of blank passport books and that nobody knows how long it will take before new booklets arrive.

The notice was issued by the Deputy Director of the Ministry, Ettien-

ne Maritz. It read: “ The Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration wishes to inform the public on a rather unfortunate note, that it is experiencing a low stock of its virgin passports.

Even though passports were ordered last year well in advance the process took longer than expected, due to complex negotiation.

Thus, the stock is now fast depleting due to increase in demand.

However, as part of the risk management stra-

tegy of the Ministry, this requires us to ration them according to crucial travel needs.

We therefore sincerely appeal to those members of our public who may have been inconvenienced by the slow pace of processing passports to bear with

us and wish to assure that the situation will be back to normal in a short while.

The inconveniences caused to our clients during this period are highly regretted.�

Hopes are high now that Namibians can have access again to a

fair administrative practice in that passports are issued on demand, within an acceptable administrative time frame.

Note: the public itself can also assist in improving the situation.

According to the Ministry a total of 5

000 passports have been issued but the applicants never collected it.

These passports expired in the meantime.

It is only fair to expect from passport applicants to follow through their applications by collecting it.

Trained to detect and dispose of explosive devices of war The United States of America's Africa Command recently facilitated the training of 15 Namibian personnel in the identification and disposal of unexploded ordnance as part of the U.S. Government's Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA) program. Training was provided to 10 members of the Namibian Defense Force (NDF) and 5 members of the Namibian Police (NAMPOL).

The training took place at the NDF military base at Otavi at the end of September. Three U.S. Navy instructors facilitated the training with the focus placed on detection, identification, and disposal of explosive remnants of war, to include landmines, grenades, rockets, and artillery shells.

Medical training, including first aid, self-aid, and buddy care was also provided. Each participant received a Certificate of Completion for the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Level 1 Course of Instruction.

The HMA program provides humanitarian mine action assistance to countries suffering from the presence of persistent landmines, which maim and kill innocents, obstruct emergency assistance activities, hamper economic development, and impede free movement of citizens. The extreme danger of unexploded ordnance in Namibia was seen at the end of May 2018 when an 11-year-old boy died in the Ohangwena Region after a grenade that he and other children were playing with exploded. Three other children between the age of four and seven were injured.

U.S. Africa Command, headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany, is one of six of the U.S. Defense Department's regional military headquarters and has administrative responsibility for U.S. military support to U.S. government policy in Africa, to include military-to-military relationships with 54 African nations.

For Namibia remnants of war is a reality. The Liberation War (1966-1989) resulted in many unexploded devices like mortars, hand grenades, landmines left behind and now posing a danger to communities.

Electronic voting machines missing The Electoral Commission of Namibia confirmed in a media statement this week that four of its electronic voting machines have gone missing and is now the subject of a police investigation.

The machines were loaned to the Swapo Party Elders Council in 2017 to conduct an internal election process. These machines were never returned to the ECN and it was reported lost or missing.

In a statement the ECN explained on Monday one of these missing units have been found in the meantime, and is in the safekeeping of the Namibian Police at Otjwarongo. A police investigation has commenced to bring to the book those responsible for these voting machines gone missing.

With Namibia going to the polls at the end of November for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, it is of crucial importance these machines are either located and for the ECN to take extra care these machines are not misused somewhere to rig the elections.

In the statement the ECN explained it has a standing practise in place to put the electronic voting machines on loan. Among others to political parties, churches, trade unions, tertiary institutions, local authorities and schools for the purposes of conducting internal elections of boards, etc.

For institutions to use the machines leads to public confidence in the use of voting machines and in doing so enhancing education of the public on Namibia’s political voting system.

According to the statement, the ECN wishes not to make any further public comments on the subject of the missing voting machines, in order not to compromise the police investigation in any way.

Seagoing personnel to vote on 13 November Seagoing personnel are scheduled to cast their votes for the 2019 Presidential and National Assembly Elections on 13 November, according to an official notice of the Electoral Commission of Namibia.

Non-seagoing Namibians will be going to the polls in the 2019 Elections countrywide on Wednesday 27 November 2019.

This day, 27 November 2019, has been gazetted as a once off public holiday to ensure that every working Namibian has a fair opportunity to go and vote.

Employers are urged to recognise this day as a legal public holiday and to respect the right of every worker to go and cast his or her vote. In the event of people having to work that day, it is also crucial to remunerate employees accordingly in terms of labour legislation.

Sarah Shifaku, an 18-year-old performing artist from the Erongo Region was selected for the International ARTS Talent Showcase that was hosted on 27 and 28 September 2019 at Silverstar Casino in Krugersdorp Johannesburg.

Shifaku was selected among others to represent Namibia on an international level in New York and in Orlando Florida next year.

Shifaku never received any formal training. “I sing and perform at concerts and I am a member of the worship team of our local church.” Shifaku explained. This opportunity represents itself at a crucial time of my life as it will get me out of my comfort zone.

Brewer and Butcher Restauranthome away from home Sharlien Tjambari

Strand Hotel's Brewer and Butcher Restaurant, a home away from home introduced their new menu on the first day of this month. The new menu offers grills and a kapana experience to go with the home-brewed beer.

The Brewer and Butcher Restaurant offers a micro-brewery, restaurant and bar. The breath-taking ocean facing terrace makes for great relaxation. The beautiful beergarden with open fire-pits, sun roofing and cosy fireplaces will ensure customers a unique dining experience. The micro-brewery offers exclusive craft-beer tastings, brewed in-house and will soon open its Bottling Plant with a sunroof. The brew masters, Ronn Rittman and Glen Uahindua offer the Swakopmund community and visitors three different craft beers. Helles, which tastes like the normal Tafel and Windhoek lager, the Monroe Märzen which tastes a bit like strawberry-cherry which gets its unique flavour from the hops used and the special brew, the Amarillo Pale Ale. This beer is mixed from time to time and has a different taste every time. Commenting on the brewing process, Rittman said: “If we are making a batch, we start when the restaurant opens, around 12:00/13:00 and then we finish around 21:00. We brew twice a week and it takes about three to four weeks to have it ready for consumption.”

According to the manager of Brewer and Butcher Restaurant, Hilda Povanhu and her assistant Pamela Karimbue, the restaurant was recently revamped and now has a kiddie's corner and currently seats 220 people. Sixty-five seats at the beer garden, one hundred and ten inside and forty five outside on the terrace. This makes it perfect for the entire family.

Popular on the new menu is the Shisa Nyama platter consisting of sticky-yummy chicken wings, steak, boerewors and a mouth-watering beef sosatie to inspire your taste buds.

The beer garden can be booked for parties, year-end functions, baby-showers and engagement parties. You can support your favourite team on the big-screen TVs. Karimbue said: “Don't miss the Rugby World Cup Finals at Brewer and Butcher Restaurant, we are open and ready to accommodate you”. The Brewer and Butcher Restaurant opens Monday to Sunday 12:00-00:00 for lunch at 12:00-14:30, Light Menu at around 14:30 and dinner starts from 18:00 to 21:45. In Windhoek wurde die Louis Botha-Straße ja in "Axali Doeseb" umbenannt.

Liebe Küstenleser!

Komisch, dass sich bei d e m Wo r t M ä u s e gleich die Mundwinkel herunterziehen. Warum? Vielleicht, weil die meisten Arten dieser kleinen Nagetiere nicht gefährdet und daher “zu viele” sind?

Ist es nicht so, dass wir eigentlich nur das schätzen, was Seltenheitswert hat und nicht das, was sich - wie wir -

europäischen Kontinent etwa 741 Millionen Menschen - und somit könnten wir in Sachen Vermehrung gut mit den Ratten und Mäusen konkurrieren!

Aber das nur nebenbei!

Was tun wir, um Ratten und Mäuse loszuwerden? Wir bekämpfen sie mit “Lebendfallen”, Schlagfallen oder speziellen Fressködern.

Wir lassen sie mit

rasant vermehrt und dann an jeder Ecke bzw. als Untermieter in fast jedem Haus zu finden ist? Geben wir es doch zu: Der Entdeckung einer seltenen Namiblerche wohnt ein unerwarteter Zauber inne, während der Haussperling kaum Beachtung findet, oder?

Eventuell liegt unsere Aversion aber auch in der Vorstellung von dreckigen Hygieneschädlingen begründet. In der Tat lassen Mäuse ihre Exkremente überall im Haus, nagen an den Lebensmitteln und übertragen etliche Krankheiten. Wir vergleichen sie wahrscheinlich auch mit ihren fetteren Verwandten, den Ratten, die im späten Mittelalter eine ganze Menge Menschen dahingerafft haben. Um genauer zu sein: Die gefährlichste Infektionskrankheit in Europa, nämlich die durch Ratten verursachte Pest, hat während der Seuchewelle von 1347 bis 1352 mehr als 25 Millionen Todesopfer gefordert rund ein Drittel der damaligen Bewohner Europas. Nicht dass der ‘schwarze Tod’ geholfen hätte, die Spezies Mensch ein wenig einzudämmen, denn heute leben auf dem

Schließlich wollen Ratten auch leben. Sollten die Viecher jedoch überhand nehmen, dann wird sich meine Einstellung bestimmt wie-

Dieser interessante Held ist übrigens eine der bekanntesten Figuren der deutschen Sagen. Die Geschichte wurde in mehr als 30 Sprachen übersetzt, und es wird behauptet, dass über eine Milliarde Menschen sie kennen.

Falls Sie nicht wissen, von wem die Rede ist, liebe Leser - hier kurz der Inhalt. Im Jahre 1284 tauchte ein wunderlicher Mann in buntem Obergewand in der von Ratten und Mäusen verseuchten Stadt Hameln auf und gab sich für einen Rattenfänger aus. Als die Stadt auf sein Angebot einging, gegen ein Endgeld der Plage Herr zu werden, pfiff er auf seiner Flöte eine verführerische Melodie, der die Nagetiere nicht wiederstehen konnten. Sie folgten der Melodie bzw. dem Rattenfänger von Hameln bis an den Fluss Weser, wo sie sich ins Wasser stürzten und ertranken.

Nun könnte man sagen: Ende gut, alles gut - wie es normalerweise in den Geschichten der Gebrüder Grimm der Fall ist. Dem nicht so!

Als die Bürger von Hameln von der Plage befreit waren, bereuten sie ihr Versprechen und verweigerten dem Befreier den Lohn. Der rächte sich, indem er wiederkehrte, diesmal um alle Kinder ab 4 Jahre mit seiner Flöte in die Berge zu locken.

Die Kinder wurden nie wieder gesehen. Jeder kann selbst seine Lehren aus dieser Sage ziehen.

Kluge Klima-Kids, wie ist es um unsere Luft bestellt?

Swakopmund (sk) Wenn es auch als angebliche “Fake News” im Internet kursiert, so habe ich mich bei einem Chemiker nach der Richtigkeit dieser Fakten erkundigt, und der meinte: “Das stimmt alles!”

Nun, liebe Leser, hier also die Tatsachen einer angeblichen Falschmeldung, die einen nachdenklich stimmen: “Letzten Sonntag war ich auf einem örtlichen Wochenmarkt. Dort gab es einen Stand zum Thema "Klimaschutz".

Ich wurde als “Vorbeilaufender” auf die Co2Problematik auf unserer Welt angesprochen. Ich dachte so bei mir… da bist du gerade an den Richtigen gekommen, denn ich bin Physiker von Beruf.

Meine Frage an den Klima-Vertreter (etwa 28 - 30 Jahre alt): “Wie hoch ist denn der CO2Anteil in der Luft?” Seine Antwort: “Hoch!

Sehr hoch! Viel zu hoch!” - Ich: “Wie hoch denn? - “Wieviel Prozent?” - Er: “Weiß ich nicht!” - Aha, dachte ich… ein wahrer Kenner! Ich fragte also weiter: “Was ist denn sonst noch in der Luft?” - Er: “Sauerstoff!!!” - Ich: “Richtig! Und wieviel Prozent?” - “Weiß ich nicht”, lautete seine Antwort. Ich erklärte ihm, dass es wohl so um die 21% seien. Es erschien ihm plausibel.

Ich weiter: “Welche Gase sind denn sonst noch in der Luft enthalten?” - Kopfschütteln...Schulterzucken …- Ich: “Edelgase!

Argon, Xenon, Neon, Krypton…! Schon mal

gehört? Die machen aber in Summe nur ein knappes Prozent aus!”

- Nachdenkliches Staunen. Ich wiederholte meine letzte Frage…Wieder (inzwischen genervtes) Schulterzucken und Augenverdrehen…Ich: “Schon mal was von Stickstoff gehört?” - “Ach ja, stimmt…Stickstoff!!!

Ja, den haben wir auch in der Luft!” - Ich: “Und? Wieviel Prozent?“ - Wieder Schulterzucken. Ich spürte, dass er genug hatte von mir. Ich ließ aber nicht locker, erläuterte ihm, dass es etwa 78% wären. Seine in der linken Hand gehaltenen Flyer sanken immer tiefer.

Er nach kurzem Kopfrechnen: “Das kann nicht stimmen, das glaube ich Ihnen nicht, weil dann ja für CO2 nichts mehr übrig bleibt!!!” - Ich: “Eben!

Sie haben Recht! Zumindest fast!!! Es sind nämlichSchwarze nur 0,038% Schoko CO2 in unserer Atemluft!” - Das glaubte er mir einfach nicht und ließ mich stehen.

Wer weiter rechnen möchte: Wir haben 0,038% CO2 in der Luft. Davon produziert die Natur selbst etwa 96%.

Den Rest, also 4%, der Mensch. Das sind 4% von 0,038%, also 0,00152%. Der Anteil von Deutschland ist hieran 3,1%. Somit beeinflusst Deutschland mit 0,0004712% das CO2 in der Luft.

Damit wollen wir die Führungsrolle in der Welt übernehmen, was uns jährlich an Steuern und Belastungen etwa 50 Milliarden Euro kostet.”

Walvis Bay Tennis Club gains momentum The Walvis Bay Tennis Club reached a milestone in its two years history. The Club played its first competition matches against Swakopmund Tennis Club. To cap matters, the Walvis Bay Tennis Club won the bout 8-0.

The matches were played at Swakopmund and the return fixture in Walvis Bay takes place in November.

The 50th annual Pupkewitz Development Schools Gala The 50th annual Pupkewitz Development Schools Gala will be taking place this weekend in Windhoek at the Westerns Suburbs Swimming pool, Oranjemund at the Oranjemund Private School Swimming pool and in Swakopmund at the Cube Swimming pool.

The gala takes place from Friday afternoon 25 October - Saturday afternoon 26 October. We have had a record number of entries this year with Windhoek at 811, Oranjemund at 140 & Swakopmund with 100 entries. There will also be a development Water polo match on Saturday afternoon in Windhoek between DHPS & St Pauls.

We at NASU are unbelievably grateful to the Pupkewitz family who have been supporting this initiative for 50 years, their unwavering support and belief in the positive impact that swimming can have in a person's life means that we can continue to facilitate this development

FNB Kwata Cricket Festival a success Rudi Bowe Cricket Namibia and FNB Kwata Cricket hosted another FNB Kwata Fun Day at the Cricket Oval in Walvis Bay. More than 270 Kwata Cricketers or Mini cricketers from various schools participated in the event.

FNB Kwata coordinator, Jona Ambuga said that fun days show that there is an interest in cricket. Having players that already came through the program, coaching shows hope for young players to become national players as it shows the success the program and creates.

Ambuga said that the FNB Kwata Cricket Festival aims to promote and bring the game of cricket closer to the smaller communities and bring exposure of one of the most elite sports in the country to the Namibian child. The Development Officer of Cricket Namibia, Justice Hangula of Walvis Bay was assisted by 38 young coaches who helped with the matches and coaching of the day. The coastal festival was a huge success.

Hangula said “The development of cricket is increasing with more players selecting cricket over other sports�. Hangula emphasized the importance of the event, saying that it is vital to give children the

chance to have fun and make friends, while promoting cricket as a sport.

The players that participated in the FNB Fun day are from !Nara Primary School, Narraville Primary School, Walvis Bay Private High School and Kuisebmond Private School.

These players were involved in the FNB Kwata Programme at their school. Schools at the coastal towns participate in the schools inter class competition. This is a school league whereby the different classes compete against each other. The teams that won the inter class leagues were then invited to participate in the FNB Kwata Fun Day. Cricket Namibia applauds the schools for their commitment towards sports development in Walvis Bay. The FNB Kwata Fun Day was hosted in order to promote the game of cricket and provide an opportunity for players to play against the other schools in their communities.

Day of Dolphins Rudi Bowe

The Day of Dolphins is the oldest Rugby tournament in the country and this year it is Bolder than ever with 12 of the countries rugby teams to compete.

The tournament that is scheduled for tomorrow Saturday 26 October from 07:00 till late will be held at the Vinita North Sport Ground (The practice field of Dolphins Rugby Club).

It has become customary practice that the one-day rugby spectacular promises to produce top-drawer rugby action with defending champions UNAM confirmed that they will be at the coastal town to defend the Day of Dolphin Rugby cup.

The teams that will participating in the tournament is the host Dolphins, Kudus, Sparta United, Vikings from the coast and Saint Lou, UNAM Stallions, Goababis Barbarians, Grootfontein, Reho Falcon,Rehoboth RC, Etosha Lions and new kids on the block Okahandja Bulls.

For the first time in the history of Day of Dolphin women teams will compete against each other. The women teams are Okahandja Husky's, Walvis Bay Blue Roses and Rehoboth Red Roses.

Despite two Rugby World Cup quarter final matches to compete with, an excellent field of 41 players turned out in fabulous weather on suburb greens. The event was again generously sponsored by Desert Iron & Steel and Dean Kock, who also participated and promised to be back in 2020 for the 10th year!

Despite expected fierce competition, Gert Olivier emerged as a relatively, comfortable overall winner and is the 2019 Club Champion with a great gross score of 141 (72 and 69). He was followed home by Stanley Gawanab and Kevin Wentzel on 146. Stanley won Runner-up overall gross on the count-out.

The 2019 Ladies Champion is Wilma de Wet who posted a score of 85 over 18 holes with Estelle Bothma taking best net on 73.

Motocross Championship tomorrow The Namibian National Motocross Championship sponsored by Yeti Insulated Panel Manufacturing will go full throttle with round 6 of the year this Saturday at the Swakopmund Motocross Track next to the Henties Bay road.

This round of the championship has 61 entries in different brands. The following brands entered: KTM – 25, Yamaha – 22, Honda – 7, Husqvarna – 7, Kawasaki – 2 and Suzuki – 3. There will be two classes for beginners as well as a weekend warrior that will not be part of the National Championships. Children in the 50cc category will ride on their own track.

Other main prize winners were Andre Burger, Overall net on 141 just edging his good friend, Deville Dreyer who was Runner up Overall Net on 142.

Divisional Prize winners were: A-division: Best Net – F Champion, Best Gross – K Wentzel, Runner up Net – J Greeff, R-up Gross – J Barnard B-division: Best Net – E. van Wyk, Best Gross – W Breytenbach, Runner up Net – P. v Niekerk, Runner up Gross – H Neethling C-division: Best Net – P. Sham, Best Gross – D. v Antwerpen, Runner up net – J Polster, Runner up Gross – A vd Westhuizen On Sunday a great field of 40 players were back on the course for a quick 5-hole scramble competition with some wives, partners etc. joining in the fun followed by a good game of rugby between the Bokke and Japan and great potjies prepared by Wikus Jooste and a few fellow cooks. A great initiative to be repeated soon.

This coming Sunday we will skip the golf but have enough wood and fires for a boring and braai to watch the Boks smash Wales.

Saturday is the second last PISCS & Fox Designs Monthly Medal with the final scheduled for 9 November.
