mine. Rössing produces and exports uranium oxide from Namibia to nuclear power utilities around the world. Rössing Uranium Limited reported that its uranium production in 2018 increased by 17 percent compared to 2017, as a result of higher milling grades. The year also ended with strong safety performance with zero injuries in December. Rössing managing director Richard Storrie said “I would like to pay tribute to every member of the team at Rössing for their diligence and focus over the past few months which has led to this excellent operational and safety performance. Rio Tinto, Rössing's majority owner, announced on 26 November 2018 that it had entered into a binding agreement to sell its 68.62 per cent stake in the uranium mine to China National Uranium Corporation (CNUC). Storrie said “The sale process continues, but we have already had positive discussions with CNUC, and they have stressed their intention to develop the mine as a sustainable business into the future. “The top priority for me and all the team remains operating a safe and productive mine that continues to meet the needs of our customers.” The sale is subject to certain conditions precedent, including merger approval from the Namibian Competition Commission. Subject to these conditions being met, the transaction is expected to complete in the first half of 2019”.

Not to be missed..... The important role of microbes in the ecology of the Namib Desert will be under discussion in a presentation on 31 January this year at the Museum Swakopmund. The public is invited to attend this most informative presentation that is presented by Robert Logan, currently a PhD Candidate in Dr Sarah Evans's Lab at Michigan State University. He previously worked as Training Coordinator and a research technician at the Gobabeb Research and Training Centre, where he conducts field research in collaboration with Gobabeb researchers. Evans is working in Namib since 2012. The presentation is presented by Gobabeb Research and Training Centre and the Scientific Society Swakopmund. Entrance is free and donations will be most welcome. Although we cannot see them, microscopic organisms cover the Namib. And like their

larger relatives, these tiny creatures must find ways to tolerate the many stresses of life in a hot, dry desert. To do so, these bacteria and fungi live many different lifestyles in every habit across the desert. They can be found swimming around in saltwater springs, residing under rocks on dry gravel plains, gliding in on fog from the ocean, and even living inside the tissue of live plants. In all of these habitats, they perform important jobs, without which, many of the plants and animals that we recognize and love could not survive. In this talk, Robert Logan will talk about the microbes of Namib Desert, where they are, how they live in such a dry landscape, and the important role they play in the desert ecosystem overall.

A car burst into flames on the C34 route near the Swakopmund dump site this week. No injuries were reported but the vehicle has been reduced to a charred wreck.

Search for oil and gas continues for Namibia A seismic survey is to commence in the days to come some 260km off LĂźderitz in the ongoing search for oil and gas reserves in Namibia's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The survey will cover an area of 3 000 square kilometres and is expected to conclude in March. The survey is carried out on behalf of Galp, a Portugal-based energy company linked to a global energy network. The survey is contracted to Polarcus UK Ltd and the research ship will use the port of Walvis Bay as replenishing base for the survey. The license to conduct the survey was granted in August 2016 (PEL83 license) to a Galp-led consortium which also includes the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (Namcor) and Custos Energy. The total area covered under this license is 10 000 square kilometres, Galp said in a statement recently. (Also see page 6 of today's edition).

KPS NASP Shoot NAPS Namibia starts the year with their 2nd archery competition in Keetmanshoop. The south showed they are not afraid of competition as Keetmanhoop Privaat Skool (KPS) hosted a NASP competition with 40 archers. Even though archers had to compete in the wind and under the scorching sun and not to mention enduring nework problems with everything electronic, nothing wanted to work as planned but the archers still gave of their best and enjoyed the day that was a huge success. Congratulations to every winner. We hope these points bring you closer to the NASP Africa Championship. Good luck for the next competitions before the Namibian Team and the Development Team will be chosen. The day would not have been possible without the support of the following whom we thank: C.H.
