Mother slits newborn’s Alleged murder-mom throat in court this week A 29-year-old woman is set to appear in the Walvis Bay magistrate’s court on 12 March this year, for the alleged murder of her newborn baby on Thursday. The woman is believed to have slit her newborn’s throat shortly after its birth at her home in Tutaleni in Walvis Bay’s Malgas Street. The woman remains hospitalised under police guard and has been charged with murder and /or concealment of birth. According to the Erongo crime investigations coordinator of the Namibian Police, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu the suspect gave birth to a baby boy in the bathroom and cut his throat open
with an unknown object. She wrapped the body in a black plastic bag and hid it under the bed. The owner of the house discovered a pool of fresh blood in the bathroom and alerted the police, who soon made the grisly discovery. The mother was arrested and is now recovering in hospital before being brought before a magistrate either today or later this week.

MEDIA RELEASE
Walvis Bay Salt Refiners inaugurates new salt wash plant
The capital investment of more than N$93.6 million in a new salt processing plant ensures that Walvis Bay Salt Refiners (WBSR) can now confidently target international markets as the company can meet the ever-increasing international specifications. It is also the single biggest capital investment since the inception of the company in 1964. Walvis Bay Salt Refiners is the largest producer of solar (evaporated) sea salt in subSaharan Africa. The company produces solar sea salt by pumping seawater from the
Walvis Bay lagoon through a series of concentration and crystallisation ponds. Over a period of 18 to 24 months, the seawater is evaporated to ultimately form a thick
layer of salt crystals on crystalliser pavements, which are mechanically harvested, washed, dried and stored to yield chemical grade or general-purpose salt, supplied in both bulk
and bag formats. The crude solar salt WBSR produces needs to be upgraded by being washed and processed to remove impurities such as calcium, magnesium and insolubles and to reduce the moisture content, in order to meet a wide range of client's specifications. “People think all salt is the same. That's not true. Salt is not just salt. It gets graded and one must have the ability to provide the correct technical specifications to a wide variety of markets,” says Andre Snyman, Managing Director of Walvis Bay Salt Holdings (WBSH). As Andre explains, five years ago the company didn't have such ability. By investing in the new plant, WBSR have seen improvements all round. The new processing plant requires lower operator input, making more time available for monitoring, measuring and maintenance work. “In the salt industry it is all about efficiencies – you only offer a successful salt business if you have low cost basis of the products,” says Andre. “To be successful there are a few key points – you must have critical mass in terms of volume, you must be in control of your logistics and have high economy of scale benefits,” he explains. After a salt field expansion in 2015, bringing its total area to more than 6,000 hectares, WBSR required the ability to process up to 1,200,000 tons of crude salt per year. The
p r e v i o u s f a c i l i t y, which was constructed in 1989 reached the end of its life, and had to operate at very high efficiency levels, 365 days per year, 24 hours per day in order to meet salt field capacity and market demand. In addition, the facility had constraints such as a too small intake hopper, limited centrifuge capabilities and a relatively high operating cost per ton. The biggest improvements of the new processing plant are anticipated to be lower processing losses, a drier product, lower power consumption, as well as the fact that the larger plant intake capabilities will support harvesting and haulage operations at a constant feed rate. This investment enhances international sales and marketing efforts by offering a wider range of product specifications from a lower cost base. Added to the fact that the new plant increases the processing capacity of salt from 120 to 220 tons per hour, it also brings the benefit of improved product quality in terms of lower insolubles, lower calcium and magnesium levels, and in general improves the company's ability to produce chemical grade product. Construction of the new plant commenced in June 2018 and includes a new reception, security office, induction office, information centre, training room as well as warehouse and ablution facilities. The manage-
ment and execution of this project was carried out by a team of appropriately qualified and experienced personnel from the internal resources of WBSR, as well as local engineering service providers overseen by an independent project manager. In total 60% of the total project cost was allocated to Namibian service providers. “Initially the new plant has had a few challenges but the team have met them all,” says Andre. “The WBSR site is located in the Kuiseb river delta close to the sea, which made it necessary to cast raft foundations on a sand basis just 300mm above the water level on the site. The harsh, highly corrosive environmental conditions also required special design and standards to ensure a plant life of more than 30 years.” Photo above: Since the inception of Walvis Bay Salt Refiners (WBSR) more than 50 years ago, the company has increased production more than 20-fold through ongoing investments in infrastructure development and human capacity building. It's latest capital investment of more than N$93.6 million in a new salt processing plant ensures that WBSR can now confidently target international markets as the company can meet the ever-increasing international specifications. It is also the single biggest capital investment since the inception of the company in 1964.

A forty-year-old man who went missing in the Uis area on 14 February's decomposed body was discovered in the Dam 5 area of the communal farming area near the town on Thursday. The deceased was identified as the 40-year-old William Gao, a cattle herder at Dam 5. It is reported Gao was offered a lift from Dam 5 to Uis by an employee of NamWater on 14 February, with the understanding he [Gao] would return with him to Dam 5 the same day. Gao was dropped off at Uis and last seen entering a shebeen. When it was time for the NamWater employee to return to Dam 5, Gao refused to go with him and opted to continue drinking. Days later Gao was still not back at Dam 5. On Thursday [20 February] a search party came upon Gao's decomposed body in the veld. All signs are that he died of exposure in this harsh, arid area.

DHL 4th Annual Beach clean up - Plastics must go! Saturday, 8 February was the DHL 4th annual beach clean up operation. It was quite a humid day and the sweating starting within the 1st kilometre. We picked up loads and loads of plastics, metal cans, glass bottles and ropes. Most of these products come from the vessels at sea which just dumps them overboard. This dumping is killing many animals both at sea and on land. Plastics get stuck in Dolphins blow holes, ropes gets stuck around seal's throats and they suffocate, beach jackals die if they swallow plastics......... Not only did we save animals, but we left the beach very clean for humans and animals to enjoy. Remember: Please take your plastics home after use or throw it in the dustbin.

Lüderitz .to become the wind energy capital Lüderitz, the port town some 400km south of Walvis Bay, is rapidly gaining the reputation as Namibia's green energy hub. The town already has a 5MW wind farm [three generators] and plans for the development of the 44MW Diaz Wind Farm of the United Africa Group are already at an advanced stage. Now a third wind-park, a 40MW capacity plant some 16km South of the town, is envisaged. Namibia's national power utility, NamPower, intends developing the wind farm and instructed Enviro Dynamics to conduct an environmental impact assessment to determine possible environmental or social impacts such a project could have for Lüderitz. An environmental impact assessment for projects of this scope and magnitude is demanded in terms of the Namibian Environmental Management Act of 2007. Namport will fund the project in its entirety through its own balance sheet. Namibia is a country with abundance of wind and sunshine and weather conditions allow for opportunities to develop not only wind energy projects but also solar projects, of which quite a few has already been established in Namibia through foreign direct investment. Background: “in 2018, the Namibia Power Corporation (NamPower) crafted its new Corporate and Strategic Business Plan for the period 20192023. In-line with the new corporate strategy and business plan, the NamPower Board of Directors approved the implementation of new generation projects in June 2018 under the
“Strategic Pillar, Ensuring Security of Supply. These projects were later considered by the Minister of Mines and Energy and a determination was made in October 2018 by the Minister that 220MW of Power Generation should be developed where 150MW would be allocated to NamPower; 70MW would be allocated on a competitive procurement basis as per current government procurement laws to IPPs for implementation. At a Board Meeting on 8 November 2018, the NamPower Board ratified the implementation of the following projects as part of NamPower's 150MW allocation: 20MW PV Power Project; 40MW Wind Power Project; 40MW Biomass Power Project and 50MW Firm Power Project”. The 40 MWe Lüderitz wind power plant forms part of this strategy up to 2023. For more information: Dr. Grant Muller – Grant.Muller@nampower.com.na or Joe Mukena – Joe.Mukena@nampower.com.na Note: the existing 5MW plant at Lüderitz is the Ombepo Wind Farm that was developed by InnoSun. The Lüderitz Town Council also has a stake in this project.

Following a report to the ACC officials in Swakopmund, a sting operation was organised and both Claassen and Dames were, thereafter, arrested whilst in possession of the N$20 000 bribe money which was handed to them. It appears from ACC source that, some Taxation Officials make bribe payment demands to some company owners who are in debt with the Inland Revenue with the promise to cancel their Inland Revenue debts and thereafter credit their accounts to claim back money from the Inland Revenue and for these owners to be in Good Standing with the Inland Revenue. This is a clear demonstration of the embezzlement of state finances. The ACC source further informed the Commission that, this was not the first time the suspects demanded a bribe in exchange for beneficial treatment from the tax office. This incident is a clear indication that all files previously handled by the two suspects must be scrutinized. Both Classen and Dames are charged with contravening of Section 35 (1) (a) of the Anti-Corruption Act, 2003 (Act No.8 of 2003), for directly or indirectly, corruptly solicits or accepts or agrees to accepts from any person a gratification as an inducement to do or to omit doing anything; in relation to the affairs or business of the agent's principal. Future Females
Sharlien Tjambari
Close to 200 ladies gathered in Swakopmund on Thursday, 20 February for an evening of networking, aimed at business and personal development. The networking event formed part of the launch of Future Females Swakopmund and was themed “Money and Networking”. Future Females is a platform that connects, inspires and supports existing and aspiring female entrepreneurs. According to the Chapter Ambassador of Coastal Future Females Namibia Beatrice Schultz Future Females is a Global initiative and their aim in Namibia is to grow female entrepreneurs throughout Namibia in a healthy and supportive way where female entrepreneurs can feel safe and taken care of. Every month, Future Females hosts an event (Globally) focusing on a specific theme in business and personal development. While addressing the ladies on Thursday evening Njeri Mwangi, an Experienced Forensics and an antimoney laundering specialist said: “Our biggest challenge when it comes to money is our ego, we want more money but we are not able to handle the little that we have. We need to change the way we think when it comes to managing funds”. Mwangi further said the only way to manage funds wisely is by sticking to the budget, “get a budget and stick to it. Budget, save for things that matters most to you and lastly, invest”. Schultz said: “We believe that to drive change through entrepreneurship, technology and innovation, we cannot have just 50% of the world focused on it. More focus is needed to encourage and accelerate the success of aspiring and existing female entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs”. She further said, providing an environment, both physically and emotionally, where women can connect with others and access key resources (mentorship, funding, education) is key to accelerating the rate of female entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship globally.

HEALTH ALERT
Coronavirus infection spreads its tentacles across the globe
The Coronavirus infection is getting its foothold in the Middle-East with Kuwait, Bahrain, Afhangistan and Iraq reporting their first infections. At the time of going to press yesterday the worst hit country in the Middle-East was the Islamic Republic of Iran where as many as 50 people are believed to have died of the Coronavirus infection. Africa remains untouched, with only one Coronavirus infection identified in Egypt. Latin America remains untouched. In Italy the fifth death was registered yesterday (Monday) and South Korea has raised its emergency level to highest. The country has now recorded 833 infections and 7 deaths. Worldwide a total of 27 countries have now recorded Coronavirus infections. China remains worst hit with a total of 2 592 deaths (time of going to press yesterday) and a total of 77 150 infections. A staggering 3 000 medical staff in China’s central Hubei Province are infected.
How can Namibians help combat the Coronavirus infection? 1. Maintain strict personal hygiene. Wash your hands regularly during the day. No spitting. 2. Always sneeze or cough in a hanker chief or a tissue. Make sure to replace it regularly. Wear a hygienic mask - it reduces the spread of airborne particles. 3. Make sure to regularly clean public surfaces like autobank keypads, reception desks and counters and shopping trolley handles. 4. If coughing and sneezing persists, or you feel flu-like or cold symptoms - take sick leave. If it persists, consult your doctor without delay.

ALL Africa Challenge Trophy at Rossmund Namibia Ladies Union won the bid for hosting the All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) 2020 at Rossmund Golf Club Swakopmund 31 March till 4th April. The origin for AACT started in 1981 Tessa Govel, then the President of the Zambia Ladies Golf Union, was invited to take a team of lady golfers to India to play in the All India Championships. The idea of an All Africa Championship appealed to them and after much consultation over next 9 years and her move to Zimbabwe the time was right for the inception of the All Africa Challenge Trophy. The event was to be run by the organizing committee of the host country assisted and overseen by the Regional Trustee who ensure that the guiding are adhered to and that participation in the event continually expands. This principal is still in place and to great effect. From Zimbabwe the tournament moved East in 1994 to Kenya at the Muthaiga golf course and the golfing safari continued west to the Ikoyi club Lagos Nigeria in 1996. Its success blossomed and grew. The South Zone hosted the 1998 event at the Randpark club in Johannesburg this tournament also marked the first time the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews assisted the All Africa with financial sponsorship. This support continued and 2000 Uganda Golf Club Kampala in East Africa and 2002 AACT which was hosted in Cote D'Ivore Golf Club in Abidjan. This was the year the zones were formally defined due to the AACT's ever increasing popularity and the need to split suitable venues between the Regions Egypt joined the tournament for the first time in
2004 at the Windhoek Golf club in Namibia bringing to field up to 16 countries. Although South Africa has always been victors other than Egypt in 2006 of the Team event the individual trophy has been won by Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya and Cote d'Ivoire. Over the years the standard of ladies golf has improved immensely with ever increasing enthusiasm being displayed. AACT was hosted in 2006 by Zambia, 2008 Egypt, 2010 Nigeria, 2012 Botswana, 2014 Tunisia, 2016 Kenya and 2018 Ghana. Undoubtedly this is the most prestigious international amateur ladies event on the Africa continent and Namibia Ladies Golf Union is privileged to host this event for the second time at Rossmund golf club Swakopmund, to help promote their efforts to enhance ladies golf in Namibia whilst also being ambassadors this unique country. 17 Africa counties will participated in this event main sponsor is Royal and Ancient St Andrews Golf club Scotland, Gondwana logde hosting the teams at The Delight hotel in Swakopmund, other sponsors Hertz, Windhoek Lager, Shoprite Checkers, Nashua Namibia, Nakara, Rennies Travel Namibia without these sponsors this international tournament won't be possible. Ranga new NFA President Rudi Bowe
Mr Christiaan Lilongeni Ranga Haikali was elected as the new President of the Namibia Football Association (NFA) on the 28th congress. The event took place on Saturday at the Safari Court Hotel in Windhoek. Haikali, in the presidential election, who defeated Walvis Bay businessman Johnny Doeseb with 20 votes to 2, will lead the NFA for the next four years. Haikali replaces Frans Mbidi, who was removed by the former NFA executive in 2018. “We need to comply and follow all the stipulated regulations. Let's avoid courts and solve our problems and make this country great again, “said Haikali. Haikali said that he is overwhelmed and thanked the nation for their patience with the NC to do its work and he hopes the Namibia Premier League will finally comply with the Fifa normalisation committee's directives in order for football to start. “Namibia is close to football being normalised and we hope that we will be able to work together as a team,” Haikali added. Presidential challenger Johnny Doeseb congratulated his rival, stating that the process was fair and done in a good spirit. Doeseb congratulated new elected NFA President Mr Ranga Haikali, “I run an ethical and respectful campaign. I wish you the very best for your new task at hand, with the hope and trust that football will be the winner under your leadership. Wishing you strength, wisdom and good health.” Doeseb thanked all Namibians who stood by
his side and believed in the value of the proposition he launched in the forum of his manifesto before the NFA Presidency elections. The new NFA executives are President Ranga Haikali, First vice president: Izak Fredericks, Second vice president: Rudolph Haingura, Ordinary exco members: Nettie Cloete, Ingy Hainghumbi, Peter Ndjulu, Ferdinand Hausiku, Shali Amakali and Earnest Joy with Kenneth Goaseb the representative for the first division and suspended NPL chairman also a member.
The format for the day was a Betterball Stableford – golfing conditions were good and the greens were running fast and true – what more would you need to deliver some good golf – with 2-clubs coming from Michael Ludeke; Athol McLean; Rina Knight; Chris Magson and Peter Fox. Carding 28pts over the back nine – It was time for head down and concentrates for the winners who managed to play some steady golf with 25pts over the front nine. The result brought much noise to the clubhouse – hopefully they will be able to keep it up in Round 2 on 16 May. Smittie made mention of the rules at prize-giving – you need to compete in both Rounds with the same partner and both need to be members of the club where you qualify and that the final this year would be played at the Windhoek G & CC. He thanked all the golfers for supporting the event and the Rossmund Golf Course for providing such an excellent facility. Captain Michael in turn thanked Dulux for the great initiative and said we all look forward to Round 2. Winners: Rina Knight/Lynne van der Walt 53 points; Peter Fox/Andrew van Schalkwyk 47 points; 3rd: Warren Theron/ Bertie Saunderson 46 points c/o. The Pro Shop golf day was held on Wednesday 19 February with a fair field size and weather conditions were excellent for golf as could be seen in the scores for the day. Winners 18 holes 1st: Peter Bass 42 points (handicap hellooo!!); 2nd: Andrew Cunningham 40 points - different tune to the one you played on Sunday - that is golf. 9 holes (front) Warren Theron 20 points c/o over Achmet Abrahams. Most Golf went to Cashbox and Lynne with 22pts collectively for the front nine. We had the usual great Wednesday vibe in the clubhouse - Ollie gave us a quick flash before disappearing back into the riverbed. Thanks Marco for supporting the day. Rossmund will re-introduce Chipping Competition for some fun with a bit of a twist - on the 2nd Wednesday and the last Saturday of each month. Entry Fee will be N$20 - 50% of which will be rolled into a pool for a "Hole in One Prize". The Local Rules have been amended so please make sure you understand them and play them correctly. Thanks. Please enter your names in good time Competitions, preferably before sunset on a Friday evening – we have golfers still wanting to enter half an hour before teeing off. This makes it very difficult to conduct a proper draw especially during Medal Competitions – that need to be seeded. The Captain stated that this is a final warning and fines will definitely be introduced for late entries. Golf is all about testing your skills against your opponents luck. Coming - up:Wednesday 26 February we have Atlantic Villas on board. Saturday 29 February will be Monthly Medal sponsored by Novanam.
Winners of the Dulux Golf Challenge Round 1: Michael Ludeke (RGC –Captain), Lynne van der Walt, Smittie (sponsors representative) and Rina Knight
