Missing stop sign cause of collision in Walvis Bay The extreme danger missing road signs pose to motorists have been demonstrated on Friday night, when two cars collided on the corner of Theo-Ben Gurirab Avenue and 7th Road supposedly after one vehicle drove over an intersection where a stop sign was missing. The accident occurred shortly before 21:00. One person was injured (Picture below). Namib times has been reporting in recent months over missing road traffic signs at various intersections in Walvis Bay. The intersection where the accident occurred was not mentioned in these reports, but on Friday night at the scene it was discovered the road sign was missing from its pole. The diagonal sign however, contained a brand new stop sign. Several other road accidents occurred in Walvis Bay over the weekend. The latest was a chain collision on the Kuisebmond bridge in Sam Nujoma Avenue early yesterday involving six vehicles. Not adhering to following distances is at the heart of this accident which luckily led to only light injuries (Picture bottom).

Kuiseb Fishing Enterprise and Gendev launch JV-company - Hadago Fishing Namibians called upon to be ambassadors for Namibia locally and abroad Erwin Leuschner
The Deputy Minister of Environment and Tourism, Tomas Nambahu, has called on Namibian's to be ambassadors for their country and market it abroad. He was speaking during the official launch of the Swakopmund Tourism Growth Strategy in Swakopmund. At the same event he called on all Namibian's to create a welcoming environment. “From the person at the airport, to the one on the street and the one putting up signs. We all should pull in the same direction to create an everlasting impression for tourists,” Nambahu said. He called on Namibian's to “not be ignorant” and visit the whole country themselves. Only then can they market it locally as well as abroad. While Nambahu calls on the tourism industry to communicate, interact, enhance happiness and be enthusiastic, he also criticised certain individuals for “undoing what we are trying to do.” In this regard he noted that while Namibia has impressive features and landscapes, some people attack tourists on lodges. “This will create a very bad impression,” he said; and added: “Now more than ever we are concerned about security, including petty thefts. It is un-African to invite somebody to your house and rob him,” he said. The Deputy Minister described tourism as a cross-cutting business and that “it is everybody's business.” “I still want to see the day when a Namibian taxi driver opens the door for a tourist. Imagine what impression that would create,” he asked. In the same vein he
mentioned a few examples of friendly service elsewhere in the world, which is unheard of in Namibia. “When you go to a toilet in Doha (Qatar) there are people that clean the toilet for you before you go in. Here in Namibia you must pay N$1 to relieve yourself and when you enter the toilet, they don't even function,” he said. In another example he noted with concern the driving behaviour of Namibian's compared to other nations. While in many countries drivers are friendly and offer assistance, here in Namibia drivers tend to resort to “road rage.” “If you make a simple mistake, you get shouted at. All these things, as simple as they might seem, are important on the impression for visitors,” he said. Nambahu further called on the private sector to help government with policies, strategies and ideas to enhance and grow the t o u r i s m i n d u s t r y. “Don't blame government that we don't understand tourism. We don't know tourists and the tourism of the white person. You must teach us. Let's learn from each other,” he said. He admitted that politicians are not “Mr Know-It-Alls” and
therefore need the assistance from the private sector. While speaking Nambahu mentioned many aspects of the industry that need attention, specifically he also called on the tourism industry to promote the local products and traditions. In his view Namibia has “so much to offer”, but the people lack the initiative to create their own identity. “We don't visit Europe to eat Mahangu. Why should a person come to Namibia to eat Schnitzel that we don't even do well, nor can pronounce? Make your own product,” he said. Nambahu congratulated Swakopmund for taking the initiative to draw up a To u r i s m G r o w t h Strategy and called on the municipality to implement the recommendations. Although he described the coastal town as one of the top-tourism destinations in Namibia, the residents and the municipality should not take that for granted. “You can market your hotel, lodge, your streets or anything as much as you want, but if tourists don't find a welcoming environment, then the effort you have made is useless if, not futile,” he said.

The official launch of the Kuiseb Fishing Enterprises and Gendev joint venture, Hodago Fishing (Pty) Ltd, was celebrated in style on Friday, 20 May. Both companies are pioneers of value adding to horse mackerel, a fish species that was traditionally marketed as an alternative source of protein in Central- and West Africa and regarded as low value. In 2015, Gendev and Kuiseb Fishing Enterprises came together to establish the joint entity, Hodago Fishing (Pty) Ltd, with Venmar as a technical partner. Venmar was also enlisted to assist in the navigation of Venus 1, the midwater trawl vessel Hodago acquired. The newly established fishing company, with a total investment valued at N$80 million, focuses on the value addition of horse mackerel, which was regarded as unachievable for many years among Namibian mid-water trawl stakeholders. The company have a horse mackerel quota and commenced actual fishing operations on 1 November 2015. The name 'Hodago' is derived from local dialects, particularly Damara-Nama, mea-
ning "we found it." The launch event was attended and officiated by Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister, Bernard Esau who said Kuiseb Fishing Enterprises and Gendev buy into the policy objectives of Government to add value for job creation and export value. From fish soup to frozen retail packs, Hadago Fishing is shifting horizons for Namibian horse mackerel as high value fish products. "I have seen the first transformation, entrepreneurship and innovation by some right holders to develop dry fish soup, smoking facilities, wet fish processing plants to produce quick frozen hor-se mackerel fillets and other derivatives. The dream is realistic, achievable and has great untrapped potential.
This comes at a time when my Ministry is in a process of developing a mechanism of pro rata quota allocation. The mechanism is to provide predictability, transparency, accountability and fairness in the allocation of quotas. Furthermore, the mechanism will give effect to Harambee prosperity plan, and enhance greater inclusivity in fisheries at beneficial control and management levels and ownership”, said Minister Esau at the launch. The joint venture has been in operation for barely half a year. During that time it bolstered job opportunities to 105 positions, whilst the company also guaranteed no job losses for crew of Venus 1 at the time of the vessel’s purchase.

Cafe Anton celebrates half a century
-and is still in the family One of the oldest and most well-known establishments in Swakopmund, Café Anton, is more than 50 years old. The café, which is situated in a prime location in the centre of town overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, celebrated the grand anniversary on 7 May 2016. For the anniversary many guests from Swakopmund and all over the world were invited to celebrate the special occasion with the owners. Amongst the guests were many residents from Swakopmund, who have been part of the establishment since the beginning and have seen the café evolve into what it is today. Some of the guests were also former waiters and workers, who shared their experiences in the café and described the founders, Mr. and Mrs. Anton, as the most humble people. The café is now run by Heidi Snyman and her two daughters Desirée Snyman and Silvia Kleyenstüber. While also recognizing long standing workers on the special occasion, Heidi Snyman gave a history of how exactly her parents came to Namibia and how the café came into being. Here follows an extract of her speech: The Story of Café Anton and Family Anton “In 1954 my dad, Manfred Anton and his mother Lisbeth immigrated to the then South West Africa. They had family here and my dad had already, before they left Germany, worked as a master baker and confectioner at the Putensen Bäckerei, where Café Treff was located until a few weeks ago! My mother arrived in 1956 in Swakopmund, also from Germany and she worked at the Strand Café with Mr and Mrs Schiessl. My dad in his off-time baked cake at the Strand Café, where he met my mother! In 1958 they got married. In 1959 I was born and in 1960 my sister Marion. My parents' dream has always been to own a little Guesthouse with a Café. In 1965, they bought this piece of ground from Mr Kaiser. They did not have enough money to purchase the ground, where an old house was located on, so my mother's previous employer Mr Pruter gave her a blank cheque with the words: “Mrs Anton, you can fill in any amount!” What employer would do that? Within a few months, my parents established four rooms on the first floor - the first four guestrooms. Four rooms in a new building were added with the Café and a small kitchen! The Café was opened on 7 May 1966! At that time there were seven other Cafés in Swakopmund: Strand Café, Lido Café, Brücken Café etc. My parents had just opened, and some prominent well known Swakopmunders, who owned a Hotel, walked past the then new café and said very loud so my parents could hear: “They will close down very soon and this place can be bought very cheap!” My parents named the Café: KONDITOREI & CAFÉ, but quite soon the
50 years ago Helma Anton (centre) started the Café with her husband. Her daughters Heidi (l) and Marion (r) helped out where they could customers named the Café: CAFÉ ANTON – so we later took the name over! These two businesses, the Hotel and Café, were always very work-intensive for all of us! My parents worked long and hard hours. My dad worked many nights starting mostly his work between midnight and 3 in the morning! The first oven was a coal-oven. This can be seen still standing outside the café till this day. At night my dad baked all cakes using that oven and for breakfast he had to be mostly finished with the cakes, as it was then used for the breakfast eggs. Only many years later did my parents buy a new bakery oven and by then my dad also got his own bigger bakery! In 1984 my dad received an Honorary Award from The Handwerkskammer Köln in Germany for his work and training in the bakery and confectionary profession outside Germany! Many young and also older people helped us during all these years! It were a lot of people. Thinking back I like to mention people like Jerry Klosta, Axel and Uwe Paetzold, The Grüttemeyers, the Mengs, Harry Louw, Bernd Kühne, Jürgen Holzmann, Urban Schulte, Mrs von Mosch, Charly Biess, Harald Berner, Surina and many many more! Many of the students, who worked with us came back and still up till today I hear: “We learned a lot working here! Not only to work with people, but about neatness, discipline, fairness and to work with money!” And the work did not hurt any one of them, nor my sister or me as children. We had to help since we were young. Sometimes we did not like it, but it certainly did no harm. In fact, the exact opposite is actually true. After school I applied to become an airhostess, but I was too young, so I went to the Hotel School in Johannesburg. At the end of 1981 my mom got very sick and asked me to come home, as the high-season was ahead. I resigned and went home! I am now back 35 years and still in the business! It was easy for me, as I said before, I was growing up in the Hotel and Café and I always had to help when it got busy. That way many of the usual work at the Hotel and Café became a second nature and even if I was sort of forced into the
business on the request of my parents, I love this job, still until today! Even if I do not have to get up early anymore if I don't want to, I still love to get up early to go to work at the Hotel and Café! In February 1982 I married André Snyman, who was then still working at SAA. He left SAA in April/May and joined us here in the business. In 1984 Silvia was born and in 1986 Desirée. We worked with my parents until 1990 when my parents retired. First we renovated the Café and then the whole Hotel. These cost extensive amounts, but we managed! André was a very versatile person! My dad trained him as a confectioner and André later trained Junius as a confectioner! Junius is still working here with us and has trained more staff. In 1998 André died at an age of 44 after an operation. I then managed the Hotel and Café on my own, but always had super staff who assisted me on all levels. We had ups and downs in the business in the 50 years, sometimes big rocks and sometimes smaller ones to get over! Extremely good times, but also hard and difficult times. Fortunately one forgets, but from time to time one remembers and especially at these occasions: My grandmother Lisbeth, who I loved very much and who taught me many skills, like all the different types of needlework, gardening and cooking. She died far too early. André's death was also far too early. And let's not forget the bomb, which was planted in the Café about a year before independence, which fortunately did not go off - even after handling the briefcase quite a lot. In 2007 Silvia joined me. She studied Hotel Management and achieved a Degree and in 2010 Desirée joined us. She is a hairdresser by profession, the same as the professions of my father's mother and father. Desirée, knowing the basics of baking since a young age, went to Germany to perfect baking in many ways and is now looking after the bakery. She brought a new wind into this Café with a lot of new types of cakes. I never forced my kids to join me in the business. It was done out of their own free will and I enjoy them working with me extremely. It's a pleasure to have them here with me! Café Anton and its cakes are well-known across the whole world today and we often receive articles from various countries with the

What I must maybe also mention here: Over all these years we had loyal friends, who always helped us to get certain equipment, which was and is not obtainable here in Namibia. I would like to thank them: Jürgen and Gaby Holzmann, Sven Holzmann, their son, who is like a brother to me which I never had, Evi Riegg, Jürgen Haist, Dagmar and Rainer Hog! Swakopmund can become a tourism Mecca
Erwin Leuschner Swakopmund has the potential to increase the already huge income and remarkable employment through the tourism sector by over 30 % within five years - subject to one condition: The town must adopt and implement the action plan contained within the Swakopmund Tourism Growth and Development Strategy, which was officially launched last week. If all residents, the municipality and the government implement the Action Plan contained within the recently launched Swakopmund Tourism Growth and Development Strategy, the town has the potential to become a leading tourist destination not only locally, but also worldwide. The income generated through the plan has the potential to increase to N$2 billion per year, the report states. The 60 page long report was launched by the Deputy Minister of Environment and Tourism on Friday in Swakopmund. Various representatives from the Town Council as well as individuals involved or employed by the industry, be it from the private sector or other government institutions, attended the event. “Tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors in Namibia, leading after the mining and fisheries industry,” Mayor Pauline Nashilundo said during the launch. According to her more than 30000 people are directly employed in the industry, while the indirect jobs created through the sector can be up to four times as high. It is for this reason that government has identified tourism as a priority sector in its National D evelopment P lans (NDP). “Tourism does not only create employment, but also opportunities for new businesses,” the mayor noted. Nashilundo added that Swakopmund plays a leading role in the tourism sector, as it is the second most important place visited by tourists in Namibia. “The sector does face many challenges though, ranging from seasonality, low occupancy, limited cooperation or the short stay of tourists. The municipality is aware of this, which is why Council embarked on the idea to create the strategy,” she said. Nashilundo called on all the residents to work
together to achieve the objectives outlined in the report, saying that “we need to work together as strong Swakopmunders.” The report was compiled by the Development Consultants for Southern Africa (DECOSA), which was appointed by the municipality. The aim of the report is to provide a basis to optimise the tourism development of the town and further increase the competitiveness of Swakopmund vis-à-vis other tourism localities. It will be used as a guide and contains set actions to be implemented to reach these objectives. The strategy lists many strengths and challenges the town is facing in realising the goal, but the
challenges usually outnumber the strengths. While the report states that Swakopmund is a well-known tourist destination amongst foreigners, the short stay of tourists (average two nights) or the seasonality (usually between July and October) are amongst the main challenges. By analysing existing data and doing simple calculations the report concludes that currently Swakopmund is visited by about 300 000 foreign tourists yearly. It is assumed that of this amount 100 000 tourists visit from neighbouring South Africa, while an additional 100000 Namibian's visit Swakopmund yearly. Based on these assumptions and through calculation, the annual
income generated by tourism contributes about N$1.5 billion into the economy of Swakopmund. If the action plan of the report is implemented and the length of stay by foreigners can be extended by one day and an additional 50 000-100 000 European tourists visit the town, the income generated can be substantial. “The tourism growth and development strategy will contribute to mobilise within five years an additional annual income of over 30% and sustain the current income, i.e. it targets an income for the industry in Swakopmund from tourism of about N$2 billion of which about 60% will be in foreign currency,” the report states.

'n Tydjie gelede het ek by 'n plaaslike besigheid 'n werk gekry. Dertien dae later het ek my bedanking ingedien. Have-a-Heart Swakopmund aims high
Erwin Leuschner
Up until the end of July the Swakopmund Have-a-Heart Project will spay and neuter and treat 100 dogs and cats from townships. The mini-spayathon kicked off in April and will curb the rapid birth of puppies and kittens and improve the general health of the animals. The Have-a-Heart Project has been going for a couple of years in various Namibian towns. The aim is to reduce the amount of stray animals in townships by hosting mass sterilisation campaigns. The reason being that the vast majority of the population in Namibia live in poverty in the townships and don't have the means to take their animals to vets to be spayed or neutered. Many also can't afford basic healthcare, but still love their pets. The initiative was therefore launched to help those in need. The animals of the current mini-spayathon have been selected by the project “Feed a Paw.” Feed a Paw consists of a small group of individuals that regularly go into the townships and feed the dogs, thereby reducing the mortality rate. For the mini-spayathon the members of “Feed a Paw” pick up the animals in the townships, drop them off at the Vet clinic where they are treated, and then return the animals back to their “home.” Some of the dogs that were spayed and neutered this week were also treated for common diseases like mange, a type of skin disease and they were also vaccinated. As Swakopmund is known for its fleas, the animals were also rid of these insects. The members of Have-a-Heart wish to say a special “Thank you” to all the sponsors making this possible and also to the individuals, who have made time and effort to help the pets.

Instead of setting up a mobile clinic on a Weekend in the DRC in Swakopmund to treat the animals, Have-a-Heart Swakopmund has now taken a diffe-rent approach. Since April more than 25 dogs and cats from the DRC have been sterilised and neutered at the Swakopmund Vet Clinic. This is made pos-sible by various sponsors, be they big or small. The whole initiative costs about N$50 000. This week ten dogs were spayed or neutered and treated for various illnesses or diseases at the practice forming part of this mini-spayathon. Until the end of July many more animals will also share the same luck regularly, almost on a weekly basis. “It is really awesome how the Swakopmund community is working together. The support is amazing,” said Ute Holstein from Have-a-Heart to namib times. She added that the Swakopmund project is aiming high this year, wanting to treat the most animals. The funds for the mini-spayathon were collected through various initiatives. Besides one private person, that wishes to remain anonymous and that has collected a considerable amount, Have-aHeart has recently started with a new programme. Interested people can collect a small, pink heart at the pet shop “Happy Pets,” sign it and donate any amount they wish. “It is especially nice to take a heart to a birthday party or similar and collect money there,” said Geesche Neuburg from Have-a-Heart.
The operations and treatments were done by the local vet Dr Tarina Sorensen (left), who was assisted by Sheelagh Bagot-Smith from the Swakopmund Vet Clinic (centre). A great deal of the mini-spayathon was organised by Ute Holstein from Have-a-Heart

Is hubbly Bubbly safe Quit smoking, before Smoking water pipes (also known as hookahs, hubbly bubbly, narghiles, shisha and goza) is becoming an increasingly popular pastime with young people, because it is seen as a fun way to socialise with friends. It is also viewed as less harmful than smoking cigarettes. Nothing could be further from the truth! Common Hubbly (hookah) Myths.
smoking quits you
The names may sound cool, but they are not. They are dangerous and addictive killers‌ CANSA is especially concerned regarding the increased use of water pipes, hubbly bubbly or hookah-smoking among young people, as their lungs are still growing and smoking can cause permanent damage. Myth 1: Hubbly (hookah) is less harmful than smoking cigarettes, Myth 2: Hubbly (hookah) is not addictive, Myth 3: Smoke emerging from a Hubbly (hookah) contains fewer toxins. Hubbly (Hookah) Myths Debunked Myth 1: Less Harmful than Cigarettes Water pipe smokers, and second-hand smokers exposed to them, are at risk of the same kinds of diseases that are caused by cigarette smoking, including cancer, heart and respiratory diseases, as well as adverse effects during pregnancy. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), contrary to the popular belief that the smoke of a water pipe has little or no side effects and is less harmful than cigarette smoking, the smoke that emerges from a water pipe contains several toxins known to cause lung cancer, heart disease and other diseases. In addition, the charcoal burned in the pipes often produces its own toxins, including high levels of carbon monoxide and cancer-causing chemicals. Myth 2: Not Addictive It delivers the addictive drug nicotine and, as is the case with other tobacco products, more frequent use is likely to result in addiction. Myth 3: Emergent Smoke Less Harmful This means that all people exposed to the smoke produced by a water pipe, whether they are smoking the pipe or just passively exposed to the smoke of others, inhale a double dose of toxins. Hubbly (hookah) Smoking vs Cigarette Smoking Session WHO has found that a water pipe smoking session, which typically lasts between 20 to 80 minutes, may expose the smoker to more smoke (and its harmful effects) over a longer period of time than when smoking a cigarette. Cigarette smokers typically take 8 to 12 (40 to 75 ml) puffs over about five to seven minutes and inhale 0.5 to 0.6 litres of smoke. In contrast, a water pipe smoker may take 50 to 200 puffs a session, which may range from 0.15 to one litre of smoke per puff. The water pipe smoker may therefore inhale as much smoke during one session as a cigarette smoker would inhale consuming 100 or more cigarettes.
Lung cancer is one of the cancer types with the highest fatality rate amongst both men and women in Namibia. The main cause of lung cancer is tobacco use: Cigarettes, cigars and pipe; while hubbly bubbly and second hand smoke exposure increase risk as well. Apart from lung cancer, serious other health risks are associated with smoking. Smoking damages your heart and your blood circulation, increasing your risk of developing conditions such as coronary heart disease, heart attack, stroke, peripheral vascular disease (damaged blood vessels), cerebrovascular disease (damaged arteries that supply blood to your brain. Attributes from smoking also include ugly yellow and tooth decay, yellow fingers, smelly hair, wrinkly skin and even erectile dysfunction! High Cholesterol, anxiety and poor vision and even recurring colds and flu are all stimulated by tobacco and nicotine use.
Don't you get less nicotine from a water pipe than a cigarette? The answer to this is water does absorb some of the nicotine, but water pipe smokers can nonetheless be exposed to sufficient amounts to cause addiction. A water pipe smoker can take between 50 and 200 puffs in a single session (which could take 20 and 80 minutes) while a cigarette smoker takes about 10 puffs a cigarette. In other words, there is the potential for a water pipe smoker to take in as much nicotine by smoking one water pipe as you can by smoking 10 cigarettes. The 'tar' in tobacco smoke also causes cancer. The smoke produced in a typical water pipe smoking session can contain about 36 times more tar and about eight times more carbon monoxide, than the smoke from a single cigarette. The Swakopmund Residents Association (SRA) is financially sound. It has set a new target to increase its footprint in town and get more members to join its cause. “We need to increase our membership and must especially encourage the younger generation to vote,” said Holger Ahrens, Chairman of the SRA, at the AGM held this week in Swakopmund. During the AGM the chairman gave his report and highlighted various issues and achievements during the previous year. Wilfried Groenewald, councillor of the SRA, who serves on the Swakopmund Town Council, gave a brief overview of his tenure and shared some ideas which he wishes to address in future. Amongst others Groenewald underlined the possible relocation of the railway in Swakopmund to the outskirts. “If that would happen, then the entrance of the B2 Highway into Swakopmund could be relocated as well to lead directly into town. Currently the highway ends up in a residential area,” he said. He further argued that the railway traffic
will likely increase dramatically over the coming years, due to the new port developments taking place in Walvis Bay. Another key point that was addressed at the meeting was the development of the DRC, which some members described as being very slow. “It is a big dilemma, because some residents have to be moved in order for the municipality to put in essential services (water, sewage, etc.),” Groenewald explained. He described this as a tremendous nightmare and said that he made proposals to various higher authorities, but his ideas are falling on deaf ears. Another important issue he brought up was the planned establishment of a City Police like it is the case in Windhoek. “It emerged that the Windhoek City Police costs the municipality N$220 million per year, which is why Windhoek is essentially bankrupt,” he said. For this reason Swakopmund cannot afford a city police. He commended the efforts of the Neighbourhood Watch and suggested that the residents in all areas do the same. “We always expect everything to be done for us, but you as residents should ask yourself what you can do. There are taxis driving around, looking for business all the time. Why can't they organise themselves and help fight crime,” he suggested. Compared to previous years the organisation made a slight loss on its income (2014/2015), which the treasurer and former council member Peter Steinkopff justified with the elections held last year. Some funds were directed into the election campaign. Due to the fact that the association is financially sound, member Lutz Hecht suggested that the SRA donate some funds to specific causes in town, men-

The committee of the Swakopmund Residents Association (SRA) was elected at the AGM held this week. We should save the funds and use them when the next election comes up to campaign more aggressively to get more seats in council. Let's rather support our long-term goal,” said member Ruth Davis. Because of her valuable input and commitment to the Association she was unanimously elected as a member of the committee the same evening. Altogether the members were unanimous in their decision to market the ideas, aims and goals of the association more aggressively in future. As such, the SRA does not only want to get more members, but wishes to encourage the youth in general to see the importance of what exactly their individual vote means. “I am the only member of the SRA in council and stand against a vast majority and therefore can only do very little. It allows the majority to bulldoze its ideas without much resistance,” Groenewald said.

Construction due to start at new Dunes Mall - to cost N$650m 1. The commencement of construction of Safland Group and Atterbury Group’s Dunes Mall in Walvis Bay is now only days away, a spokesperson for the development confirmed to namib times on Monday. All earthworks and preparation of the land area has been completed as well as the excavation of foundations. The casting of foundations is to start in the next days to come. When the newspaper visited the site yesterday, a temporary boundary wall was close to completion before the first construction machinery and construction cranes are due to arrive. At the scene it was said the temporary boundary wall is a prerequisite for public safety. Once completed, Dunes Mall is expected to measure just over 28 000 square metres in surface area and a single storey building will make navigating this second biggest mall in Namibia next to the Grove Mall in Windhoek easy for the shopper. Some 80 tenants are currently negotiating contracts with the developers Safland and Atterbury, the spokesperson explained. The mall is developed at an estimated cost of N$650 million and completion is scheduled for end 2017.

Original Dunes Mall sites makes way for lifestyle centre
3. The development of two light industrial extensions as well as a logistics hubs between the C14 airport road and Narraville necessitate upgrading the road to a multi-lane surface to allow for turn-off lanes and passing-lanes. In this way airport traffic will be channeled safely in the passing-lanes traffic bound for the industrial areas will be channeled to the turn-off lanes. When namib times visited the development area earlier this week a grader prepared the road shoulder to allow for the passing lane.
2. Construction work to a lifestyle centre at the entrance of Walvis Bay, diagonally across the road from where construction is soon to commence of the Dunes Mall, will bring a new shopping concept to Walvis Bay, the developers Safland confirmed yesterday through a company spokesperson. The site was originally intended for the development of the Dunes Mall when Safland was still the only owner and developer of the concept. However, after negotiations with partner Atterbury Group it was decided to relocate the Dunes Mall concept to the original Erongo Mall site (see Item 1) and it was subsequently decided to develop a lifestyle center on the original site (Item 2). The lifestyle centre will cater for businesses needing larger shop floors like vehicle dealers and transnational furniture dealers. Safland remains hush on which anchor tenants they are currently negotiating with and the total price tag for the development is also not yet known.

5. 4. The sheer size of the area under development where a contractor is currently developing the Second Industrial area (Extension 14) for the municipality of Walvis Bay becomes clear from this aerial photograph. Extension 12 (First Industrial - Item 4 of the picture) has been completed and a number of manufacturing and other large ventures has been establishing in the area including a charcoal repackaging plant, pallet manufacturer, various transport operators as well as a brick maker, to mention a few. To augment First and Second Industrial (Extensions 12 and 14 as these industrial areas has been named by the local authority) the !Nara Namib International Logistics Hub is also under construction. Land is currently serviced for the First Phase of !Nara Namib and a second phase will follow after that.
5. Urban development inevitably brings traffic headaches, as the municipality of Walvis Bay can testify. The development of First Industrial and Second Industrial, coupled with the urban growth of the Narraville suburb necessitated the construction of a second access road to this neighbourhood which traditionally only had Sam Nujoma Avenue as its only access road. But, cautioned a source yesterday the addition of a second access road to Narraville cannot be seen as the end of traffic woes for residents who must commute daily between Narraville and Walvis Bay proper. Traffic congestions at the Narraville turn-off on the B2 coastal road might decrease, but traffic congestions where this new access road links with the airport road could lead to more congestions. “This something we are looking at for the future, as this new access road will only spread traffic load from and to Narraville and will not solve all our problems. We are also looking at more problems in this area, as the future Dunes Mall’s entrance will also be located on the airport road and would compound the problem, a municipal source said.

Champions League final Now Available everywhere on Dstv & GOtv Every platform, every bouquet, every angle. SuperSport is lifting the football game and tennis tournament of the year to even greater heights with unprecedented levels of coverage. Next week, the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid on Saturday, 28 May 2016 will be available on all DStv bouquets from DStv Premium through to Access as well as on GOtv Value and GOtv Plus. This latest development comes on the heels of MultiChoice Africa's decision to add the EPL, La Liga, the upcoming Euro 2016 and most recently, the Europa League Final to DStv Compact as part of the company's continuous efforts to delight subscribers with the greatest football in the world, at a price they can afford. The game will be available to subscribers on SS11 (DStv Channel 211/ DStv Channel 231 –Nigeria), SS HD 3 (DStv Channel 223/ DStv Channel 203 – Nigeria), Maximo HD 1 (DStv Channel 221); SuperSport SELECT 1 (DStv Channel 233 and GOtv Channel 30) and Maximo 360 (DStv Channel 242 and GOtv Channel 33 in Mozambique). And for those unable to watch the television broadcast, live streaming will be available on supersport.com, plus the SuperSport and DStv Now apps. Snappy TV, via Twitter, will offer social media highlights, plus there will be live updates on supersport.com and long- and short-form highlights available on the CatchUp service. Liverpool legend John Barnes will be part of the studio build-up while analysts Andy Townsend and Neil Andrews will be reporting live from Stadio San Siro ahead of the 20:45CATkick-off. The studio build-up will start at 19:30 CAT for the English-speaking channels and at 20:00 CAT for the Portuguese channels. The countdown to the big match will begin next Thursday on SS3 with a season review of highlights from every match through to the semi-finals. Next Friday, past finals will be highlighted while on match day, five-minute highlights of every Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid match in the Champions League this season from 17:30CAT on match-day ahead of the big game. Meanwhile, the battle for footballing supremacy will centre on the Spanish capital of Madrid when the city's two foremost teams clash for the highest honour on the continent on May 28. Real Madrid and fierce rivals Atletico meet for the second time in three seasons in the Champions League decider as they ensure Spanish dominance of the competition continues with a third successive win for the country. Atletico were seconds away from claiming the title in 2014, but after Sergio Ramos equalised for Real in the third minute of injury time, the latter ran away with the game in extra-time to win 4-1. Revenge would be sweet for Atletico manager Diego Simeone, who never won the Champions League during an illustrious playing career that included over 100 caps for Argentina and 15 years in Europe's top leagues. But stopping C r i s t i a n o Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and James Rodríguez has been a task many have found impossible this season, with Real coach Zinedine Zidane hoping Champions League glory will prolong his stay in the Bernabeu hot seat after missing out on the Spanish La Liga. Real are seeking to extend their record of 10 Champions League trophy wins, while Atletico have yet to lift the trophy after final losses in 1974 and 2014.

Rio Tinto Rössing and Langer Heinrich Uranium Pool Clubs launched Uranium Derby competition Langer Heinrich Uranium Pool team
Rosing Uranium Pool team
The pool clubs of Rio Tinto, Rössing Uranium and Langer Heinrich Uranium (LHU) launched a quarterly Uranium Pool Derby competition in Swakopmund. The event, which drew around 20 players from both mines, was ultimately won by Langer Heinrich after some stiff competition from the Rössing team.
Winners: Standard Bank Betterball Scramble Drive: Stefanus Bonifacius/Helmut Ndjendja together with Samuel Enkono (sponsors representative)
Golf News Seniors Thursday 28 April saw a good field of seniors take to the fairways for their month-end competition generously sponsored by Ocean View Spar. Winner: Willem Engelbrecht 37pts followed closely by Brian Mather on 36pts. Well played and thanks to Spar for their continuous support of this competition. SAGES Sponsored this month by the birthday boy Cashbox van Wyk/Stainless Engineering - the turnout was good and the weather played along - with some great prizes up for grabs. Nice to see that there were some new and some old SAGES in the winning circle, scores were close. 2-Clubs went to Mark; Piet and Willem whilst nearest to the Pin No.7 was Gerd and No.12 Mark. Winner on a countout Willem over Bertie 38pts; 3rd: Cashbox 35pts who valiantly donated his prize to playing partner Gerhard; 4th: Theo 34pts; 5th :Piet 33pts; 6th: Lucille 32pts. Thanks Cash for all your support over the years we really appreciate it. Wednesdays 18 May - sponsored by the Pro
Shop/Marco Swarts - we had a fair field of players - weather conditions got really cold towards the end and players were glad to get back into the clubhouse - with the fire burning and some soup on offer. It would appear that Bertie Saunderson and Gert Breedt really have their golf shoes on at the moment and are posting some good scores "week in and week out" - well played to both of you and keep it up. 18 holes Winner: Bertie 39pts with Gert close behind on 38pts. 9 holes went to Fanie 18pts winning the threeway countout. Saturday 14 May we played the annual Standard Bank Betterball Scramble drive - as always this format is popular so the field was excellent. Weather conditions were good until late in the day when the southwester put in an appearance. However, the day was very enjoyable and highly competitive with some generous vouchers for the winners and a nice plate of curry & rice at half time. Results: 1st: Helmut/Stefanus 51pts (this included an eagle by Stefanus on No.8); 2nd: Bertie/Mark 46pts
(c/o); 3rd: Gert/Piet 46pts; 4th: Lucille/Tienie 45pts (c/o). Nearest to the Pin No. 7: Gert; No.12: Dennis and No:16; George. Well played to everyone and a big thanks to Standard Bank, especially Samuel Enkono who was on hand at the prize-giving and confirmed they will be there again in 2017. Coming -up 25 May (Africa Day) - CTM 28 May - we hope for something different so watch this space. "What is LOVE compared to holing out before your opponent."
LHU won 17 matches, with Rössing close on their heels with 15 wins. The player of the tournament accolade went to Rössing player Hezron Cloete, popularly known as “Baksteen,” who was the only player to not lose a single match on the day. The manager of the Rössing Pool Club, Leon Beukes said: “As a young pool club just starting out, we identified an opportunity to regularly compete against the competitive Langer Heinrich pool club and at the same time engage more informally with our peers in the uranium mining industry. The event was hugely successful and although we lost the first ever pool derby between the mines, we also learned a lot from our colleagues south of the Swakop River.” “The event was played in good spirits and I want to thank all the players for their professional conduct and commitment to a fair contest. The Uranium Pool Derby floating trophy is set to become a sought after item and we look forward to the next round of competition against the Rössing team”, said Langer Heinrich’s pool club captain, Bradley Brokovic after the tournament. The Uranium Pool Derby competition will be played on a quarterly basis with the hosting of the events alternating between Rössing and LHU. The competition forms part of both mines' efforts to promote regular engagement between stakeholders in the uranium mining industry while promoting healthy lifestyles and solidarity amongst employees.

Kudus slag Dolphins Kudus 2 - 49 Dolphins 2 -12 Kudus 1 - 27 Dolphin 1 - 0
Top Gear presenters visit Uis
nd
Basil Calitz, a resident of Uis and owner of Brandberg Rest Camp (2 from left) met the three presenters of the television series Top Gear on Friday and got to take a photo with them. From left are Richard Hammond, Calitz, Jeremy Clarkson and James May
Big excitement in a small settlement. Last week Friday a resident of Uis and owner of Brandberg Rest Camp, Basil Calitz, made new friends – but they are well-known all over the world. The three presenters of the famous television series Top Gear, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May had stopped in Uis. “I saw there was something going on at the Service Station, so I went over and met them,” Calitz said to namib times. He continued saying that the three presenters were very friendly and “we talked a lot.” They were very secretive about their exact trip though and didn't want to reveal any information about where they were heading next. They had just stopped in Uis to fuel up. According to Calitz they were driving beach buggies, one of which has a big V8 engine. “They also took a shot with me in it. Maybe I'll feature in the episode,” Calitz said. Although the presenters didn't want to reveal their next destination, Calitz got a glimpse of them heading north up to Twyfelfontein.
