Coronavirus outbreak:
Health Ministry to announce plan of action to the public The World Health Organisation (WHO) has convened late yesterday to revise its stance on the outbreak of the coronavirus in China. The virus since spread to several other countries with several fatalities and several hundred people already infected. New infections is expected to raise exponentially, not only in China but also globally as travellers take the virus from country to country. The Namibian Ministry of Health and Social Services yesterday confirmed to Namib Times it will make a response plan public within days. China has isolated the origin of the virus to the city of Wuhan, the most populated city in central China. At the time of going to press yesterday Chinese authorities placed a second city, Huanggang, on lockdown and confirmed 17 deaths and 570 people infected. A third city is also in the process to be ordered on lockdown. The WHO first met on Wednesday and after assessing data decided to delay for now declaring the coronavirus outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. Should the WHO have taken a decision yesterday indeed to declare the outbreak an emergency with global consequences, Namibian health authorities is expected to act swiftly to put measures in place at most ports of entry and to also have a national response plan in place should people fall ill. Closer to home at the coast, this global health phenomenon is also of significance. The Walvis Bay International Airport is expected to activate health scanning protocols for passenger arrivals should the outbreak indeed reaches global proportions. Those traveling from Walvis Bay to South Africa (Johannesburg and Cape Town) could also expect the same protocols upon arrival. Walvis Bay is also a major passenger liner destination with thousands of tourists yet to embark in the port of Walvis Bay in the remainder of January and also in February and March with a total of nine passenger liner calls [some of the calls are by the same liner making multiple calls every other week]. Coastal travel agents are also waiting for further information from the national health authorities, in order to advise clients who has to travel in the following weeks. One agent told Namib Times all travel agents have one central online source where all global developments impacting traveling are regularly updated. That includes all variables like terrorism and natural disasters among others. At the time of going to press this central information source had no information published on the coronavirus outbreak and how it affects countries globally. “We are also waiting to see what is going to happen”, this person explained. Meanwhile, it is accepted the coronavirus outbreak in China is going to have a negative impact on the annual Spring Festival migration for the Chinese New Year. The Chinese authorities have soft-quarantined the city where the outbreak started and has several restrictions and interventions in place across China to curb the spread of the virus. With the virus already detected in several other countries, including the United States it is expected that the world will very soon react to it in the same manner in the early 2000's with the dreaded SARS-virus and later N1H1.

Namibia's Fishrot scandal gained a new depth, with yet another person arrested in this international bribes for fish quotas scandal. On Monday, the Anti-Corruption Commission arrested Jason Iiyambo (35) on corruption charges after he allegedly attempted to bribe one of the investigating officers in the so called Fishrot case. Iiyambo was attempting to bribe the official in exchange for releasing the ATM cards of one of the Fishrot accused who is currently behind bars. A total of six people are in custody as direct players in the Fishrot scandal, among others former fisheries minister Bernhard Esau. It is alleged that the accused approached one of the investigating officers with an offer to pay N$2 million in cash for the investigating officer to remove bank cards from evidence and hand them over to the suspect. A sting operation was organised on Monday night and Iiyambo was arrested. The suspect appeared in the Windhoek Magistrates Court on Wednesday this week. No bail was granted and the case was remanded to the 20 February for further investigation. Iiyambo was charged with contravening section 29(1)(b) - a person commits an offence who does anything calculated to improperly influence an authorised officer concerning any matter connected with an investigation and section 46(b) Conspires with any other person to commit an offence under Chapter 4 of the Anti-Corruption Act, Act No 8 of 2003. Note: Iyambo was denied bail in the Windhoek magistrate’s court on Wednesday and remains in custody until the next appearance of the Fishrot-six on 20 February.

Thank you Walvis Bay Municipality Eileen van der Schyff Langstrand-residents praise the Municipality of Walvis Bay for the rapid response on Wednesday to repair a ruptured main water line in the suburb's Kuiseb Avenue. The pipe rupture resulted in tens of thousands of litres of potable water flooding the street. Residents were left without water supply for under an hour, thanks to the prompt response of a municipal repair team. The pipe was fixed, and water supply was restored almost immediately. Another municipal team resumed pumping water from the flooded street with a tanker pump truck. They worked well into the night and on Thursday morning there was little signs that the street was flooded the evening before. “We as residents are thankful for the service we have received from the municipality. We extend a big thank you”, a resident of Kuiseb Avenue said on behalf of other residents.
Namibia only has two days of Type O blood supply left ∙Become a blood donor - Be the difference! ∙An inactive donor? Renew your commitment! The Blood Transfusion Service of Namibia (NamBTS) has only two days of supply of blood Type O left and needs at least 2 000 blood donations before the end of January to bolster its blood supply. A growing demand for blood and a decrease in the number of people donating. In a press statement earlier this week NamBTS called on Namibians across the country to heed the call and donate blood. That include blood donors who are currently inactive to come forward and donate blood. It is specifically blood Type O of which there is a severe shortage. As many as 55 % of donated blood accounts for Type O, which is the most common human blood type. “Currently, there is a shortage of group O blood”, said Zita Tobin of NamBTS. “The supply is very low; a healthy level should be 6 days and higher and we are on 2 days for group O which is totally inadequate. This has resulted in rationing of group O positive and O negative blood to hospitals. The stock levels of other blood groups A, B and AB are still enough hence we are making an urgent appeal to the public to donate blood especially blood group O donors”, Tobin said. The only way to give patients access to this precious life-saving resource is through the selfless act of blood donation. “There has never been a better time to donate, then now, a lifesaving donation only takes 30 minutes of your time”, she added. Donors in Windhoek, North and at the Coast can donate at: 35 Tal Street – 07h00-16h00, Windhoek. Tuesday and Thursday 07h00-18h00 United House Building, Independence Avenue from 08h30-16h00 Swakopmund Centre 10:00-18:00 (Monday's only) Walvis Bay Centre 10:00-18:00 (Tuesday's only) Oshakati Centre 10:00-18:00 (Thursday's only) The basic blood donor criteria require one to: Be older than 16. Weigh more than 50 kg. Be healthy and feel well on the day of donation. Lead a sexually safe lifestyle. Be committed to helping others. For more information, join the conversation on the Blood Transfusion Service of Namibia's Facebook page or call 061 386 300. pro@bts.com.na or www.bts.com.na. Donate blood. Donate life.

“Cupcake by cupcake”: Flamingo Primary wins its battles against classroom shortage Rudi Bowe
The platoon school system, introduced in 2016 at Flamingo Primary School (FPS) in Walvis Bay to counter classroom shortages, is now something of the past. Four [of a planned seven] classrooms were constructed at the school at a total cost of N$500 000 and are ready to accommodate learners. Although these new classrooms are not entirely ready, as there are still touchups and ablution facilities needed, these classrooms are adequate under circumstances to accommodate learners. And where there is necessity there is innovation. Learners are simply bringing chairs and plastic tables from home that must serve as temporary seating and working space. Once the school has proper desks and chairs to furbish the classrooms, the kids can take their tables and chairs back home. FPS started to feel the pinch of its classroom shortage in 2016 al-ready when Government instructed the enrollment of 160 Grade 1 learners at the school. This caused an immediate shortage of classrooms and this shortage forced the school to start with a Platoon school system. The platoon system meant two school days. Grade 1 learners were occupying classrooms in the morning and between 12:00 and 17:00 240 it was the turn for Grade 2 learners to utilize the classroom for schooling. The situation was
very stressful for parents. Mostly working parents were inconvenienced as they were still working at 12:00. The only solution was more classrooms and more classrooms in the shortest possible time. In 2017 a group of Grade 2 parents decided to challenge the situations. In conjunction with the school's board and management, these parents started a fund-raising initiative to cover the costs of the construction of the seven classrooms. They had fun walks, raffles, athletic meetings, bazaars and cupcake sales. Construction of the classrooms started in December 2017, with sufficient funds to make a start. Several businesses in Walvis Bay also joined the cause. Merlus Seafood Processors contributed N$50 000. Tukondja Trading Enterprises contributed N$15 000. Erongo Marine Enterprises contributed N$50 000. Demersal Fishing-contributed N$5000. Santam Namibia contributed N$150 000. The Kuisebmond Social Club contributed 40 bags of cement and BUCO supplied the ceiling boards. Voluntarily contributions also followed from the 2019 Grade 1 parents and some of the parents of students in other
grades. Thanks to these abovementioned efforts, four of the new classrooms were completed to such an extent they can now accommodate learners despite some finishing touches still to be made and more ablution facilities that has to be constructed to adhere to health standards. The principal of FPS, Ms Ursula Damens, is impressed with the progress made, but admitted there is still a steep hill ahead. “The school is in need of desks and chairs for the learners in the four new classrooms. A total of N$250 000 is needed to complete all the classrooms and that excludes furbishing it. Damens expressed resolve to see this project through, as with the completion of all the classrooms the school will have no space problems anymore and the profile of education at the school will dramatically increase. Damens thanks everyone involved and urged more people to follow this noble example. Pictured: Grade 2 learners with their own tables and chairs in front and inside the new classrooms; Ms Ursula Damens; two of the partly completed classrooms and classrooms that still need to be completed.

Chinese New Year Chinese New Year is celebrated by more than 20% of the world. It's the most important holiday in China and to Chinese people all over the world. Namibia is no exception and this coming Saturday Chinese communities at the coast and elsewhere in Namibia celebrates this very important global annual cultural event. A colourful lantern festival will take place to mark the end of the New Year festivities. The new Chinese year is the year of the Rat. The website chinesenewyear.net has a few very interesting facts about the Chinese New Year. [consult website for more]. 1. Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival: In China, you'll hear it being called chunjie or the Spring Festival. It's still very wintry in China, but the holiday marks the end of the coldest days. 2. There's no set date for Chinese New Year: According to the Lunar calendar, the Spring Festival is on January 1st and lasts until the 15th (the full moon). Chinese New Year ranges from January 21 to February 20. This year it is celebrated on 25 January. Although China shifted to the Gregorian calendar, many Chinese people prefer to celebrate their birthdays according to the Lunar calendar. 3. It is a day for praying to gods: The Spring Festival was originally a ceremonial day to pray to gods for a good planting and harvest season. People also prayed to their ancestors, as they were treated as gods. 4. Fighting off monsters: According to one legend, there was a monster named Nian. It would come about every New Year's Eve. Most people would hide in their homes. But one boy was brave enough to fight him off using firecrackers. The next day, people celebrated their survival by setting off even more firecrackers. And that practice became a crucial part of the Spring Festival. 5. The most fireworks are set off in the world that night: People stay up on Chinese New Year's Eve and set off firecrackers at midnight. In the morning, firecrackers are used again to welcome the New Year and good luck. That same night, families also burn fake paper money and printed gold bars in honour of their deceased loved ones. 6. It is the longest Chinese holiday: The Spring Festival is technically 15 days. In Namibia is it common for construction sites of Chinese contractors to come to a standstill for the duration of the festival. At the coast that would mainly mean major road construction projects and the new bulk fuel terminal north of Walvis Bay where Chinese contractors are active. Chinese New Year shopping: During the holiday, Chinese people spend twice as much on shopping and eating out than Americans spend on Thanksgiving for instance. Traditionally, you have to spend time with your family and can only go out after the 5th day. 7. The Spring Festival causes the largest human migration in the world: The most important part of Chinese New Year is the family reunion. Everyone should come back home for the New Year's Eve dinner. But since in modern China, most elderly parents live in rural villages while their children work in the cities [and all over the world in actual fact]. The migration back home and to go on vacation is called chunyun or Spring Migration. It is expected the coronavirus outbreak in China will to some extent negatively influence the migration numbers this year though. 8. No showering, sweeping or throwing out garbage allowed! Showering isn't allowed New Year's Day: Sweeping and throwing out garbage isn't allowed before the 5th. This is to make sure you don't wash away the good luck! On the other hand, there's a day before the Spring Festival dedicated to cleaning. This day is to sweep the bad luck away and make room for the good. Not a time to thrive in business if you are a barber: During the entirety of Chinese New Year because hair cutting is taboo. What else is taboo during Chinese New Year: Using scissors, knives and other sharp things; arguing, swearing; saying unlucky words (such as “death” and “sickness”) or breaking things. 9. Children receive lucky money in red envelopes: in other cultures, children receive gifts for holidays. Gifts are also exchanged during the Spring Festival. orate everything red for Chinese New Year.

Senior citizen upset with plumbing issues Sharlien Tjambari
The wellbeing of our senior citizens should be our priority and no senior citizen should live under bad living conditions. Namib Times received a call from Hanna Seinsch about her apartment which is under water. She lives at Welwitschia Park Phase 1. Seinsch said she moved into her apartment in April 2018. Back then she could see that the walls were damp but didn't think anything of it. The situation however, deteriorated as years went by, the water started coming out of the walls. “Last year in November I went on holiday, while I was on holiday the water damaged my electrical appliances including my fridge, microwave, 2 electric kettles, a television set and washing machine. I had to buy everything new.” Seinsch claims that when she moved in, the taps in the apartment were not working and she had to replace the taps with her own money. “Officials from the health department late last year told me that the water leakage might be coming from my neighbour's bathroom taps, but it seemed they were not certain. They told me they were going to come up with a plan for me because the place needs serious repairs, but to date nothing has been done. I am frustrated. I sleep with an open door because the door is so wet it will not close”, Seinsch said. Walking into her apartment, Namib Times couldn't help but to notice the wet floors, there are blankets scattered in the living room and newspapers are used in the laundry room. This is an attempt to absorb the water. There is physical evidence of wet mops and brooms which Seinsch used to mop and sweep out the water from her house, everything is a mess, her documents were destroyed by the water and she seemed hopeless. She cannot move out because she has nowhere to go and all the apartments are currently taken. All she needs is help from the Ministry of Health and Social Services who are responsible for Welwitschia Park Phase . A source from the Ministry of Health confirmed that the issue was reported, but could not confirm when the issue will be attended to. PLEASE NOTE: WE ARE ALSO OPEN BETWEEN 13:00 - 14:00 TESTIMONY: Mr Daudi made my enemies confess to what they had done to me. Esther (Swakop) first heard of Mr Daudi on a community radio talk show: I took his number down and booked an appointment. He charged N$ 200.00 to read my fortune. I was shocked when he mentioned that my husband was involved with another woman which I could not believe and he showed me all the bad spell she had done to me in the mirror and I was shocked. I have lived for 20 years with unhappiness in my marriage until now, Mr Daudi cast a spell and the other woman separated from my husband and she later confessed to me. Today we live a happy life with respect and no fighting after Mr Daudi binded him to me. I recommend him to others who are suffering and I regard him as my guide. My husband has been to him and his business has been improved. We both agreed to go public so that the people get to know Mr Daudi this is the only way I can pay him back, I think he has been sent by God. greatness again and to win gold in all different divisions in the NHU Indoor leagues. We have the pleasure of reappointing our previous coach Ruan Oosthuizen who just returned from the Netherlands. He was the coach for the National under 16 PSI All Stars that made big waves overseas, showing everyone not to underestimate Namibian Hockey. Dust off your hockey gear and see you at practice starting on 21 January 2020 (and every Tuesday) at the Jan Wilken Indoor Complex from 19:30, and 22 January (and every Wednesday) at Sparta from 18:00. Rossmund Back in the Swing After a busy and successful holiday season, Rossmund Golf Club is finally back to its normal schedule and anticipating a busy 2020. A club sponsored Betterball Medal Scramble Drive was played on Saturday, 11 January with 30 players participating in perfect weather conditions with a few different combinations that came out on top. This was good to see. The winners of the Betterball Medal Scramble Drive were Rina Knight/Hans Naobeb 57 with Helmut Ndjendja/Terry O'Leary 61 c/o second and Graham Louw/Athol McLean 61 third. Rossmund Golf Club had their Annual Sponsors Sundowner evening on Friday 17 January. On this evening, members show their appreciation to all the sponsors who have supported the Club over the year. With the awe-inspiring view of the course and the dunes in the background, a glass in the hand and something to nibble on the side, it was a great way to say thank you. The first round of the 2020 Novanam Medal Master was on Saturday 18 January with a good field of real golfers out enjoying themselves in some excellent weather. Novanam has supported this event now for more than 20 years. Rossmund Golf Club is truly grateful. The Club would like to thank Miguel Tordesillas for officiating at the prize-giving and enjoying a round of golf with at the Club. The Overall winners on the 2020 Novanam Medal Master are Lazarus Goabab 74nett c/o with Hans Naobeb with a 76nett, the winner of the “A” Division, Bertie Saunderson with a 74nett c/o the winner of the “B” Division and John Horne with a 76nett the winner of the “C” Division with Rina Knight 78nett the winner of the Ladies Division. Well played to all. These are great results. The Coastal Sages Branch had their first get together for the 2020 season sponsored by The Swakopmund Plaza Hotel on Sunday 19 January. Unfortunately, Johan could not be with us. However, a group of his golfing buddies joined for the event and all had a great time. Play started in heavy misty rainy weather. It was foggy most of the day and the wind came in cold and strong from the north. 42 Clubs came from Cashbox van Wyk; Harald Engling; Bennie Venter; Clive Lawrence. Nearest to the Pin Number 7 was Cashbox van Wyk, Number 12 was Warren Theron. The Winner was John Redman on 36 points, second was John Horne on 35points (it would appear that his new eyes are working well) and third was Hoffie Viljoen on 34points. In the true Sages tradition everyone went home a winner. The Rossmund Golf Club Committee would like to inform all members that the due date for the Annual Handicap Fees was payable on 31 December. With only 51% of the members that paid, the Committee has agreed to extend the cut-off date until 31 January. The amount payable then is N$400, after which the amount due will escalate with N$100 per month. All members that did not pay their Annual Handicap Fees are urged to please do so as soon as possible to avoid additional costs. Coming Events: Saturday 25 January - Club sponsored Bogey Plus - oh no not again - but it is a year ago can you believe it. 25/26 January - NAGU Walvis Bay Open Wednesday 29 January - social golf and then the AGM - the Agenda and Nomination Forms have been placed on the main Notice Board.
Novanam January Winners: Lazarus Goabab, Hans Naobeb, Rina Knight, Bertie Saunderson, Miguel Tordesillas (sponsor) and John Horne
January Sages Winners: John Horne, Achmet Abrahams (Chairman Sages), John Redman and Hoffie Viljoen
Nedbank MD Lionel Matthews with Arne Rodenwoldt and Vincent van Biljon the Nedbank Desert Classic winners and Dan Zwiebel the event coordinator
Fox and van Wijk third at Desert Classic Walvis Bay golfers Pieter Fox and Wouter van Wijk ended third in the Nedbank Desert Classic recently at the Rossmund Golf Club. The 2019 Desert Classic has come and gone under the auspices of Nedbank Namibia's new title sponsorship of a marquee golf event, supported by co-sponsor, Bachmus Oil & Fuel Supplies. A great field of 140 plus golfers took to the fairways in excellent weather conditions. Day one belonged to the Van Wyk brothers Abrie & Antonie on 49 points followed closely by Joseph Martin/Thomas Shitaleni and youngsters Arne Rodenwoldt/Vincent van Biljon with 47points – Unfortunately on Day two they were not so lucky leaving the gate open for the youngster and a few
others who played consistent golf. Apparently no one could better 3.5 meters from the hole on Number 16 - so the Mercedes Benz on offer for a Hole- in- one was returned to its garage. The winners of the 2019 Nedbank Desert Classic are; 1st: Arne Rodewoldt/Vincent Van Biljon 93 points; 2nd: Gert Breedt/Andrew van Schalkwyk 89points c/o; 3rd: Pieter Fox/Wouter van Wijk 89 points. We say thanks to Nedbank for this new initiative DZ Golf for all their input into making the day a success as well as all the volunteers for their hard work
