Erwin Leuschner With an average room occupancy of 71.7% recorded by Namibian tourism accommodation establishments across the country last month, this year's peak tourism month is officially the highest August occupancy recorded by the Hospitality Association of Namibia (HAN) in the last decade. “We definitely noticed the good tourism season at the coast,” said Almuth Styles from the tourism centre namib I in Swakopmund to namib times. According to the statistics released by HAN during the month of August 75.75% of the 6696 rooms available at the coast were occupied. “I know it is a successful season when I get walkin clients who wish to book accommodation and there is no more room available,” said Styles. Of the total 13 764 beds available at the coast 8 476 were occupied, making the bed occupancy slightly less at 61.58%. Styles also noticed that a lot of popular day activities for tourists, like desert tours or dolphin cruises, were also very high in demand this season so far. The main tourism season usually begins in August and runs until mid-November. “I noticed a lot more Italian, Belgian and Dutch tourists this August,” Styles continued. Based on the statistical records HAN holds of the past decade, German-speaking Europe still remains the largest source market for guests to accommodation establishments, with some 26,16% of guests to establishments in August over the past decade coming from either Germany, Austria or Switzerland. Namibians frequenting establishments over the past ten years were the second biggest group with 24,8% of all rooms occupied by Namibians in August, followed by South Africa, with close to 10% over the past decade. The average occupancy for Namibian tourism accommodation establishments in the peak travel month of August over the past ten years has been around 59,5%, making this year's

result of 71,7% a clear indication of the positive trend the tourism sector is able to enjoy at present. Already in July, an increase of over 5% compared to 2015 was recorded – this year's high season in tourism for Namibia is promising to be one of the best ever. 2015 was a less successful year for Namibia tourism, (as well as for tourism in Southern Africa in general), with general occupancy in August sinking to a low of 60% only, causing some discouragement after the positive growth the previous year. Reasons for the slump were seen in the effects of the Ebola scare at the time, as well as restrictive visa and travel regulations imposed by South Africa.

Platz Am Meer Safari Investments had to rush with the finishing touches to open the mall on time. A symbolic, official opening with high-level dignitaries will take place at a later stage. Although the mall opened its doors to the public, some shops are still busy moving in and will only open during the course of next month. The first to open was the supermarket Checkers. Lessees that opened their doors yesterday include Woolworths, Signature Cosmetics, Christian Mobile Literature, Biltong den, KFC, Crazy store, VetSmart, Ackermans, Pep home, Pep Stores, Cape Union Mart, CNA, Studio 88, Shoe City, Clicks, Edgars, Avairy coffee shop, FNB, Uschi & Diane and Seeff. Other shops will open during the course of the next few days. These include Novacambios, Nanodaog, Execuspecs, Jaiting Sushi, Streethouse, Cross Trainer and the Healthy way clinic. Namibia currently ranks high on the list of popular travel destinations across the globe, partly due to other popular destinations for European travellers, such as North Africa, Turkey and other parts of the Mediterranean fell out of favour due to political turmoil. HAN is confident that Namibia's popularity may even grow, if the tourism industry maintains its active marketing activities, ideally with more aggressive support and investment in destination marketing from government and other key stakeholders. “Now is the time to leverage on the positive momentum currently experienced, so as to reach the full potential of Namibia's tourism industry,” HAN states.

Continued from page 1 Steers, Fish aways, Monsieur Collections, The Vault Emporium, Pandora, Mugg & Bean, My Republik, Liquor city, Bluegrass Restaurant, French Cuisine, Cellulink, Asian Sun Restaurant, Bank Windhoek, Standard Bank and a Car Wash will also have opened their doors. Many shoppers visited the mall yesterday morning, with more and more visitors seeing the “Platz am Meer” in the afternoon. “This development is necessary to the town of Swakopmund,” said Swakopmund Constituency Councilor Juuso Kambueshe while walking through the mall. Ilse Marais from Safari Investments was very happy with the first day. “People are very positive,” she said to namib times. The Small Boat Harbour will be in use from this weekend onwards. If all small boats will be utilizing this new feature instead of the Mole, is not yet set in stone. “There is no directive at the present moment,” said municipal spokesperson Ailie Gebhardt to namib times. According to her the safety for the use of the boats will be appraised with the assistance of the small craft users and NamPort Directorate of Maritime Affairs. The mall itself is one of the biggest developments Swakopmund has experienced to date, with massive amounts of man hours being poured in. According to Safari Investments an average of 350 workers were present on the site each day working a total of about 920 00 man hours. For the development a total of 15 866 m³ of concrete was poured, while 2 764 951 bricks and 135 565 bags of cement were used. The mall also features a couple of “firsts” for the Erongo Region, including Single Roof tiles (bituminous product imported from Belgium), a Parking Water proofing system, exposed carpentry (European Spruce) and Walk Ways Translucent sheets (Honeycomb system imported from Europe).

Langer Heinrich employees march for money owed Erwin Leuschner About 50 employees of the Uranium Mine Langer Heinrich marched to the head office on Wednesday morning where they handed over a petition demanding money that the mine allegedly owe to them. “We have had many meetings, but the issue was never resolved. That is why we decided enough is enough,” said Norman Jacobs, Branch Secretary of the Mine Workers Union (MUN) during the march. The employees marched from the Taxi rank in Swakopmund to the head office of the mine, chanting slogans while displaying various placards. “If Zuma can pay back money, why not Langer Heinrich,” read one poster, while another stated: “Pay back the money, if you can't the Chinese are waiting”. They chanted slogans like “down oppression, down” or “down skelmheid, down.” The disgruntled workers voiced their unhappiness in the petition against Langer Heinrich for “injustice and daylight robbery that has been taking place right under our noses since 2007.” The main issue stems from a company policy that was drafted in that year stating that the company will in future pay the workers 70 % of overtime worked. “As much as we understand the company's reasoning behind that wrongful move, we do not accept it as being satisfactory,” it states. With Wednesday's action the workers wish that the company pay them “back our money and it be done in a very short period of time, lest we continue demonstrating until the message gets through to the company.” The workers marched to the head office “without fear of being prosecuted or facing disciplinary action.” According to them they were nearly prosecuted internally the last time they demonstrated. As part of their list of demands the disgruntled employees request the company to comply with collective agreements and honour them. “This is a sensitive issue of fraud and thievery that has been coming since 2007. We, the workers, would also like to buy houses and lots of things,” said Jacobs. He handed the petition over to company IR specialist Marizaan Hennop.

Apartheid revived at non-existent Rossmund golf estate In what is reminiscent of the hated Apartheid labour pass (Dom Pas) system, domestic workers, gardeners and even personnel of building- and other contractors are not allowed into Swakopmund's Rössmund suburb without identification cards which have to be cleared beforehand with the so called Rössmund Golf Estate Home Owners Association. The pass system stereotypes black people as the cause and concern for crime at Rössmund. Danny Beukes Eish, why threat the newspaper guy...it can be concluded that there is some uncomfortable truth here, that will cost some a lot of money and/or trust. Still a very cool neighborhood though... Onesmus Etenda Nghiishililwa I hope no black Namibian in this suburb to subject other country men and women into this racist regulations. Whites never liked black people and they will not ever mingle with us blacks freely. But every time we are being forced to forgive them as If we have done anything wrong to them. This sh**t was not supposed to happen in independent Namibia after all. I know I generalized about all whites but imagine a Lawyer with this kind of behavior, how will he/she deliver justice in a court of law for a black person? Namibian Judicial Services Commission should reconsider this imbecile to decide on cases, with their apartheid mentality. GRN desalination plant to produce 25 million cubic metres of water per annum for the coast Government will build a new desalination plant with a capacity to produce 25 million cubic metres of water per annum to secure the water supply to the central coast. In the interim, government is investigating the feasibility of extracting even more water from the “severely strained” Omdel and Kuiseb aquifers. Willem Steyn The answer is simple. 1. Areva cannot be bribed (no incentives to the high and mighty as a reward for purchasing the Areva Desalination Plant). 2. The Chinese must get more government contracts, so the government is waiting for the Chinese to come up with (create) a company that could maybe build Desalination Plant (e.g. China Desalination Construction Company Number 12, short CDCC12). The quality will definitely not be as good as what they would get when purchasing the current Desalination plant. 3. We must also remember that the Chinese are also much more open minded to dealing out Incentives to important people once a contract has been awarded.. Peter Odendaal why is government not buying the Areva plant..can someone elaborate?

The ugly side of the “Ultimate Shopping Experience”Platz am Meer Once upon a time there was a beautiful beach and a prime surf spot at what was then called “Vineta Point”. Every day you could see families of all social and economic backgrounds enjoying the beauty our coast had to offer: recreational angling, playing on the beach, relaxing, running or walking on the beautiful sandy beaches etc. Then one day in April 2012 this all came to an end as bulldozers were pushing sand into the ocean, taking away prime fishing and other recreation spots. Slowly but surely the monster spread its wings; tons of rocks were haphazardly dumped into the ocean to create a breakwater, fences were put up to keep citizens out of the construction site. Local and regional politicians defended the controversial development, which initially was supposed to be a “Small craft harbour development” and now turns out to be a massive shopping centre, with the majority of tenants being South African chain stores, and luxury accommodation for the selected few. As the walls of the shopping centre and luxury suites went up, the beautiful sandy beaches downstream of the breakwater eroded away. Meanwhile local tax-paying residents have pointed out many irregularities regarding the development; for example that no environmental clearance was ever granted for the current breakwater development (consequently MET issued a compliance order in August 2015); nobody was allowed to see the building plans of this massive development; no EIA with public participation was done for the shopping centre (as required by the Environmental Management Act); no approval has been granted by the Ministry of Transport, which is responsible for maritime safety issues; it has been confirmed that most of the development is built below the high water mark, thus on state land and not under the jurisdiction of the local authority; the retail area advertised is 11 000m2 more than the approved 16 000m2; the building height violates the restriction of the town planning scheme; and the list continues…. Minutes from town council meetings state that the developer has built beyond his erf boundary.

Locals have seen the development encroaching massively on public land, taking over roads, pathways and the local braai facility, which subse-quently has been dumped on the beach a few hundred metres further south. Rumours are that the slipway is not safe for use, as per requirement of the agreement between the developer and the town council. Furthermore does the agreement between the developer and the town council state that the Council shall, for its own account maintain and keep in good order and repair streets, pavements, public open spaces etc.. Should this include the maintenance of the breakwater, it will cost the local taxpayer, that is you and me, millions of N$. While the consumer-hungry privileged citizens can satisfy their shopping desires, the workers will have to spend their time and limited funds to commute from their humble residents far away. Many without the funds will possibly fall victim to the widely offered “buy now pay later” facilities and get into further financial debt. Major chain stores will close their branches in town leaving behind empty spaces. Noise pollution will increase in several adjacent suburbs as delivery trucks manoeuvre their way to the shopping centre through narrow streets. Parents will have to be extra alert to make sure their kids are not run over by cars and trucks when walking to the beach or park to play soccer and other outdoor games with their friends, the majority coming from the less privileged communities. This is the kind of development our local/regional authorities deliver to their voters. Bend over to please the rich and take away from the poor while blatantly ignoring Namibian legislation – all in the spirit of Harambee?!? Viva Namibia! Concerned rate payer

Rössing celebrates 16 years supporting birdwatching day Werner Duvenhage , managing director of Rössing Uranium expressed his gratitude and pride he takes in the 16 years that Rössing has been hosting its annual birdwatching day, especially this year when celebrating 40 years of operations in Namibia. Last Friday's event took place at the Walvis Bay lagoon and groups of coastal learners from seven schools not only watched birds, but also learnt about their adaptation to the environment, breeding habits as well as why, how and when they migrate in search of food. The event is part of the Coastal Biodiversity Week hosted by NACOMA. Werner thanked the organisers, teachers, learners and those who took time out of their busy schedules to participate to ensure that the birdwatching event is a success. He further encouraged Namibians to take an interest in biodiversity and participate in efforts aimed at conserving and protecting biodiversity. Rössing is a member of the Rio Tinto group of companies and its operations worldwide host birdwatching days in partnership with BirdLife International. Rössing takes pride in giving back to its community and carrying out its social responsibility by supporting various biodiversity projects, such as the Damara Tern fencing project focusing on conserving the breeding area of the fragile and endemic Damara Tern; Seabird Rehabilitation Project paying special attention to the rehabilitation of the penguins along the Namibian coast, and Rössing played a significant part in the Project Shine clean-up campaign of Swakopmund municipality to mention but a few.

All dies wäre

The Mercedes All-Terrain: A station wagon that thinks it's an SUV * Times Live

Audi has the Allroad, Volvo has the Cross Country and now Mercedes is jumping on the bandwagon with the E-Class All Terrain; a car that mixes station wagon practicality with greater off-road capability.

“No E-Class has ever been as versatile as the All-Terrain," said Ola Källenius, Mercedes Benz Cars head of marketing of the car that will be making its official debut at the Paris Motor Show. "The new model combines a striking look in SUV style with the intelligent space concept of the estate." It will stand out from other E-Class models thanks to pronounced front and rear bumpers, a protective trim around the wheel arches and the choice of 19- or 20-inch wheels wrapped in fatter tires. But don't think that plumping for an All-Terrain will mean that you'll get a car that really is Range Rover capable when it comes to really heading off the beaten track. The new model does offer up to 156mm of ground clearance and permanent all-wheel drive plus some genuinely clever suspension technology. The car uses Mercedes' Air Body Control system so that the ride is as smooth as possible and yaw -- that rocking of the body from side to side when going over bumpy surfaces or cornering hard -- is kept to a

minimum. The system can also raise or lower the ride height and work in conjunction with stability, skid and traction control systems. To simplify the whole process there's a dedicated all-terrain setting that alters the steering, gearing and throttle response as well as ride height. Information about steering angle, the angle of the car's body and data about the gradient of a slope or the steepness of the incline appear on the dashboard display. So instead think of it as a car for all seasons and on-road conditions. And because it starts out life as a standard E-Class estate car it has a host of cutting-edge active driver safety systems, one of the best infotainment systems fitted to any car currently on sale and, of course executive levels of comfort. As Källenius explains: The All-Terrain is a flexible all-rounder -- for unpaved roads, family and leisure time." The All-Terrain will be offered with a 2-liter 194hp diesel engine at launch and a sixcylinder diesel will follow soon after.

The new Ford Ecosport makes its debut

The new Ford Ecosport makes its debut, with its engineering and design giving you more of what you need and less of what you don't. The Ecosport gives you as many kilometres per tank as possible without compromising on responsive power, so you spend less time on the road. The EcoSport shares its basic interior layout with the Ford Fiesta; it's just taller. That means the switches, dials and the mobile phone-inspired centre console will all look familiar to anyone who's driven the big-selling supermini. It's impressively roomy for a supermini-derived machine, and pretty versatile with it. Seats up, even adults will be OK sitting in the back. The ambience is the more basic, entry level model, but just as stylish and performance orientated as the Trend and Titanium models. The Trend and Titanium include bluetooth functions, leather seats and USB ports. The Ecosport's handling is about as good as it gets from

these small, supermini-based soft roaders. It steers with reasonable fluidity, delivering good steering weight and plenty of grip with a very smooth driving experience. The ride is well-controlled, and the whole structure has a reassuringly solid feel. You can take the road less travelled, because you can. With rough roads, potholes, burst water pipes; you might slow down or go in another direction, but in the Ford EcoSport, you just keep going. It is difficult to find a better combination of fuel economy and power, which uses 20% less fuel yet still delivers power. The urban design is also about saving money; little details like the rear tail lamp kicker improves the aerodynamics to limit wind

resistance and uses less fuel. The Ecosport is cheaper than some rivals, and it's priced competitively against its nemesis with its aim on fuel consumption. It's also forecast to hold

its value quite well, so for those buying outright it makes a fair amount of financial sense. and Ford offers some well-priced service plans that will save you money.

Daar was heerlike gekuier langs

Safland Sevens at The Dome Namibia's premier Rugby Sevens tournament, the Safland Sevens, will take place on the 12 and 13 November 2016 at the Dome in Swakopmund. The tournament debuted in Windhoek in 2015. This was officially announced by Dave Hammond, Sports Coordinator & Sales and Marketing Manager at the Dome, during a press conference recently. According to Hammond the event is anticipated to attract a total of about 400 players, about 120 of which will come from all over the world. “It will be a much bigger event than last year. We want it to be a family event which everyone can attend,” said Hammond. The second hosting of this tournament will again see world class sevens outfits like Namibia's national team and South Africa's Blitzboks in action, while invitations have been extended to the national teams from United States, Argentina, Germany, Kenya and Zimbabwe, amongst others. A SA All Stars team and a Living Legends team are also expected to show their skills. The Safland 7's tournament also offers newly appointed Namibia 7's coach, Jurie Booysen, the opportunity to test his team against some of the best Sevens players in the world.

The Blitsboks, bronze medallists at the recent Olympic games in Rio, will once again be favourites to win the tournament; but the USA, Argentina and Kenya have all won on the world tour. Germany could also prove to be popular tourists in Swakopmund. To add more flavour to the tournament, a Sevens schools tournament for three age groups will run parallel to the international competition with the age groups under 17, 15 and 13 competing. There will also be a rugby skills development programme with 400 children between the ages of three and twelve participating in the event. The Dome promises the event to be fun for the whole family, with the outdoor activities taking place on the sport fields around the sport complex and inside activities taking place in the Dome. Tickets will go on sale soon.
